Soo... like, what do folks recommend?

1: Install vanilla 10.5.6 with the script as per usual, then update to 10.5.7?

2: Install vanilla 10.5.6 without using the script, and then update?

3: Wait for a script update because neither of those are going to actually work?

Neither does mine. I have just updated to 10.5.7 and all seems to be working ok. Sound included.

If only, the info shown in ABOUT THIS MAC has gone corrupt (shows 4GHz processor, while it should be 2.80; processor unknown... but that's all)

Installation procedure:

Retail DVD image mounted from KALYWAY 10.5.2; using DigitalDreamer's patcher v. 3.4

After that used v3.5 just to enable IDE/PATA drives.

Once all was working ok, just backed up the installation with Time Machine (don't know if it could have saved me in case of failure) and tried the SOFTWARE UPDATE.

Two reboots and the system is up an running apparently OK.

Specs:

ex58-ud5

Core i7 920 @ 2.8GHz

6 Gb DDR3 RAM

2 x SATA 1 TByte Seagate Barracuda

1 x IDE 250GB Seagate Barracuda (OSX System Disk)

Thanks again to MAJ!

Time to go to sleep, it's 0:47AM here! Good night -_-

Mine doesn't lose audio.

Hmm can someone throw up the relevant audio kexts for this mobo somewhere? I tried extracting them from the installer script in the OP but it didn't work for me. I'll try installing someone else's kexts.

About This Mac changed for me too, the processor frequency is correct (even after overclocking) but the processor went back to "Unknown"

I have 10.5.7. running as well. It took several reboots for it to startup. I'm running the brand new 9.7 vanilla mach_kernel as well as the new System.kext. Sound, Graphics, Clock, and LAN appear to be working.

The most obvious problem is the CPU identifier (See picture). Also, I'm running at 3.2 ghz not 3 as shown. Memory reporting is a little weird too. It's showing up as DDR2. Even weirder, the manufacturer of the last two DIMMS is reporting wrong. This may be due to the fact the the Mac Pro only has 4 DIMM slots per processor. Just a guess.

Just upgraded to 10.5.7, installed the kexts again (not the kernel, using vanilla 10.5.7 kernel) and it all works even better than before, Wifi now works with my WMP300N!!!

Tested using Gigabyte GA-EX58-EXTREME

Update: The WMP300N is causing freezing again, so it's turned off :-(

Just updated to 10.5.7 ;) Need further testing.

Downloaded the update through software update and the machine rebooted twice before the login screen appeared.

Main install was retail 10.5.6 and 3.5 script with Chameleon v2.0 RC1/vanilla kernel 9.7.0.

Only modification is I put IONetworkingFamily.kext and System.kext to S/L/E folders to solve Parallels networking and USB thumb drive problems.

Seems working well as usual.

Thanks DD for all the hard work!!

UPDATE: Just got a Kernel Panic. Don't know what's the cause.

GG!

Keep us up-to-date on that KP.

why not just run the stock kernel that comes with 10.5.7? the assumption was that it would support the i7 just fine and in fact people were already running beta 10.5.7 kernels. so the mach_kernel and System.kext that come with 10.5.7 should match each other and not require any modification...?

anyway if this works out then goodbye badaxe2, hello UD4P! i've been waiting for this to drop before going into production with the i7.

edit: apparently also there is native support for ich10:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1154034

Native ICH10! Nice.

We should be able to just toss the LegacyAppleAHCIPort.kext, then.

With the kexts in /Extra, it doesn't matter what order you install. The patched kexts in /Extra basically stays the same, so the script shouldn't have much of a role in this update. Just remove your kernel and System.kext from the script folder, so that they don't overwrite the new files and get installed.

You should be able to run without the LegacyAppleAHCIPort.kext, however.

Have you tried using 20 in your SMmemtype string in /Extra/smbios.plist?

can't wait for dreamer to post... i havent updated since 4.22...

LOL! Yeah, you are soooo behind! :)

I might not get upgraded tonight. But, will look into the CPU info issue. Has anybody tried using the script to change the CPU info? Does it not work?

Got a couple questions for you guys running 10.5.7:

1. Are you still having to put System.kext in S/L/E for full functionality?

EDIT: Okay, that didn't make sense. What I really mean is regarding the Voodoo-kernel install and the System.kext. We'll find out soon enough.

2. Has anyone tried the Voodoo-based kernel on this install? :D

There's no real reason to use it, but there are some who do not want to use Chameleon 2, so cannot use the vanilla kernel (clock speedup) and the Voodoo-based kernel is the only option.

I like this gang.

MAJ

Okay everyone! Listen up! :P

I reinstalled OSX86 on my utility drive using the same method and sets I documented back on page 54 with DD's 5/10/2009 installer and updated to 10.5.7 using the combo update.

Great news is that everything works!

Even my Sapphire ATI 4870 works out of the box without any drivers!

However...

although my ram is listed as 1333mhz as set in AppleSMBIOS.kext's info.plist, it is listed to be DDR2.

Furthermore, my CPU speed is listed as 3GHZ when it is a stock-clocked 920.

ALSO! Chameleon seems to be ignoring the -v and -f commands listed in the com.apple.boot.plist as it goes directly to the boot screen.

Ignoring flags in boot plist?! That's a bootloader issue. Are you sure you didn't copy an unmodified plist from the script folder?

Okay, I finally upgraded. Wasn't sure my backwoods internet connection was going to allow me that full 443MB download...

Along with tossing out the LegacyAppleAHCIPort.kext, you might as well toss out the AppleSMBIOS.kext, as it's being ignored.

Until we get an updated AppleSMBIOS.kext, all we got now for hardware reporting is the smbios.plist in /Extra.

This is all I know for now:

Set the string for SMmaximalclock for your CPU clock speed.

SMmemspeed for RAM speed.

Anyone know the number code for DDR3?

I started counting up (20, 21) and got FB-DIMM and RAM, respectively.

Just wanted to make sure everyone is a aware that if you want to upgrade to 10.5.7, go do it. You do not need a script update or even run the script at all.

If you are running the Chameleon bootloader with the kexts in /Extra, then you're ready to upgrade. Nothing else is needed. That's what vanilla installs are all about! :P

Now, if you were running our older boot-132 setup, with the kexts in S/L/E, then you would need to run a post-patch to reinstall those patches. But, that's not the case anymore.

I was able to use the script to change my processor info and model name. But, you'll need to edit the smbios.plist in /Extra for the CPU clock speed and RAM info.

EDIT: Just a heads up. Has anyone noticed Netkas comment on the MacPro identifier?

if you use chameleon, or other bootloader with smbios replacement support, better to make identify of your machine to be some imac or something else, MacPro identify may result in kernel panic.

I'm using the MacPro4,1 identifier, like many of you here, but haven't experienced any issues, yet. Likely, it's when a Mac Pro specific feature is in use, this may crop up, but can't think of what that may be. Anyone?

best of wishes,

MAJ

Okay I was able to correctly enter my CPU speed and RAM under smbios.plist and Chameleon dosen't seem to be ignoring bootflags anymore.

but now riddle me this!

My system kernel panics at boot when headphones are plugged into the front audio jack

I upgraded too today with a minor hiccup... lost the audio, and at first boot (yes it restarts twice during update)... but at the first real boot, I had orange drive icons again. I checked all my add-in kexts in S/L/E and they were all there, still colored correctly, same dates... so I threw backup copies of all of them in kexthelper... repaired permissions, and on next boot, icons were back. But not audio.

I just installed 10.5.7. Everything is working fine for me except now my 802.11n wifi card is not being recognized; it was working fine under the Kalaway 10.5.2 install.

My card is a Trendnet internal PCI model which uses the Ralink RT2860 chipset. I used the latest 10.5 driver from the Ralink website (dated 2.17.09) but it is not working under 10.5.7

Any suggestions to fix this? Also, does anyone know the 802.11n chipset that Apple uses for their Mac Pro's? I think I would avoid future headaches if I get the same chipset as Apple so my networking shows under Airport.

Thanks to DD and others on this board for a very easy install! Also shoutout to Crash4419 for the recommended bios settings.

Those with no audio are probably not on the UD5 board. They may need the older AppleHDA.kext from 10.5.6.

Netkas had this to say:

Important notice, legacyhda may not work with newer applehda.kext from 10.5.7, you will need either make sure you legacyhda works with 10.5.7 or use applehda.kext from 10.5.6 (alc889a legacyhda from stickpin and friends need to be updated)

Also, I thought the "Unable to determine UUID for host. Error: 35" errors were odd, because we already have the IONetworkingFamily.kext that includes the IOBuiltin = true fix for this. So, I just deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and rebooted. Appears to take care of the issue.

Sadly, the growl/Mail fix is not in, so we still have to use "show summary" to keep Mail from quitting.

MAJ

Just ran DD_3.5 on Leo10.5.6 and now only one of my ethernet ports is showing in system prefrences>Network.

When I manage Virtual interfaces in system prefs it only shows I have one ethernet port when I ad new link aggregate

Hmmm

Make sure that link is not actually dead and in need of a reset. I've had a Ethernet port got bad after a reboot on the Gigabyte board.

Go in the BIOS and do a cable test with the SMART LAN1/LAN2. If it doesn't show "Detecting port..." then it's probably bad.

Just do a BIOS CMOS clear or unplug the PSU for 10 seconds or so.

MAJ

OS 10.5.7, plus Chameleon 1012 and Voodoo-based 9.6.0 kernel combo appears to be fine, surprisingly (the new vanilla kernel is almost twice the size of the 9.6.0 version).

About This Mac info doesn't report correctly and System Profiler/Hardware and Memory only report "error during reading" (Console shows "index beyond bounds" error). This is in spite of using the AppleSMBIOS.kext that's normally included.

This environment hasn't been fully tested, but appears surprisingly functional, all things considered.

MAJ

DDR3=24

:)

Awesome! Thanks for that! Everyone will appreciate that info.

Hi guys!

Finally, the new Hardware arrived (in signature) :)

I hope I won't get the ultimate problems getting OSX running on it...

I updated the BIOS to F6 and installed Win7 RC7100 just to do a quick check if everything is working/running.

Boy, cinebench is running like a hurricane!

So the time is just right for building up the :) intosh!

I didn't quite understand the HD situation necessary for the OSX installation...

I need a 3,5 HD with OSX (10.5.6) allready on it. Okay. And I need another one... As target for the installation?

If so, I need another two(!) HDs, since I have to use the two that I've allready installed for the :) system..

So I'll try my best to follow the steps from poste ONE here and hope I'll get this done.

Many thanks!

e./ My missing link: I have downloaded EX58-Kexts , X58-Mobo_patch_Installer , Boot_pictures

But I don't get it how to initialize the installation process. Do I need to burn these folders on a CD? Can I "boot" from this CD then? Sorry!! but I just don't see the way for the first step.

Yay for 10.5.7, bringing the same plate of issues I've had for weeks.

With the kexts in /Extra, it doesn't matter what order you install. The patched kexts in /Extra basically stays the same, so the script shouldn't have much of a role in this update. Just remove your kernel and System.kext from the script folder, so that they don't overwrite the new files and get installed.
Tried it. Moved the mach_kernel and system.kext back to their 9.7.0 folder, and sure enough they didn't get installed. This resulted, however, in an OSX that would reboot once it got past Chameleon.

You should be able to run without the LegacyAppleAHCIPort.kext, however.

Here are all of the variations I have tried so far:

Deleted LegacyAppleAHCIPort.kext.

1: Installed 10.5.6 using script option 1 (perform 2 thru 7). As usual, it booted fine. Ran the update. It rebooted twice. Then it gave me the blue flash -> black screen. 1b: Tried same using other DVI port. No difference.

2: Moved mach_kernel and system.kext to 9.7.0 folder so they wouldn't be installed. Result wouldn't boot.

3: Installed 10.5.6 using script option 1. Then installed 48x0 driver package, without Natit.kext. Result gave the blue flash. (This is nothing new.)

In short, the only bootable solution I have (running script option 1) can be updated to 10.5.7, but the update causes the same problems as simply installing the ATI driver package.

Any suggestions? Anything else I might want to remove from the installation? Blah blah blah. I'm happy that everyone else is having great results. It gives me hope! I guess what I really need is a script, or a modification of a script, that will give me the most PLAIN VANILLA INSTALL of OSX 10.5.6 possible, so that there is MINIMAL chance that the reason I'm getting this g__d__ blue flash issue is some sort of conflict with extraneous drivers.

And to all the people who have things working with QE/CI: What is your monitor connection? Mine is DVI -> VGA -> CRT monitor.

For 10.5.7 you do not need to install any drivers other than Natit for the 48x0 series. At least that is what works for me.

Has anyone been able to address the issue where my system does not boot if I have headphones plugged in? Could that be caused my the incompatible 10.5.7 applehda.kext? I have a UD4P board and sound output works fine.

Hi all,

Yesterday was a really bad day. The kind you wanna share to feel better. :)

As my Bios is still an old basic version, and I can't acces to Bios profile on usb drive (and ecounting other issues) I have an idea : what about installing a new drive in my my bran new tower, in order to have Win installed also on that mahine and to be able to update Bios and maybe load some nice OC profile from the man called MAJ ?

The first thing that happened is that is broke my WD Velociraptor trying to pull the power off. You know that little platic guide you use to plug it in ? It's gone, and obvisously, the disk too. What a good day my friends !

The bad thing is that I was done installing and everything just worked "like a charm"...anyway.

We french people say "When you have no brain, you must have legs" In my case it's more "When you have non rain, you must have money..."

So I went to our little Parisian Akihabara called "Rue Montgallet" in order to see if this can be fixed...little chinese hands are working on it (I mean the guy is short, I'm not willing to be disregarding over chinese people). Because I'm now working on a big project, I was to buy a new one too. I have so many renders and export to do with Final Cut Studio that I'm really winning days using my new hackintosh instead of my old...hackintosh. :P

Anyway, so I was back to the very begining of a proper DD script install. But this time, everythning went wrong...

Feedback on a retaill DD script install (many issues, but went trough)

Running the script (2-7) and the retail installer worked. (no graphics, apple.boot.plist updated with strings for graphic before installing)

Running the combo update from my IPC install just did'nt worked, frezzing everything. Had to reboot.

Running the script again (5-7), just to be sure. I then choosed to edit the CPU infos, but I changed my mind and closed the script window using Steve Jobs little invention (the red cross on the up left of the window). That freezed my computer. Had to reboot.

On reboot, I had some kind of BIOS failure : just after the "verifying pool data" I get that error message :

"Ebios read error 0x04 sector 64

17F485698..." (several times with different numbers)

Cleared cmos, back to my known working profile...

To be sure, I ran the script again from 5 to 7 (I know, I've done this before....)

Reboot, Chamv2 ok, Boot on Retail (still 10.5.5) but experiencing strange behaviours : the system was crashing (KP) when trying to mount DMG. ? What the f*ck ?

Reinstall System.kext from the script (Why not?)...

Chameleon boots...but :

On reboot, I had some kind of BIOS failure : just after the "verifying pool data" I get that error message :

"Ebios read error 0x04 sector 64

17F485698..." (several lines with different numbers)

Cleared cmos, back to my known working profile...

Boot, Cham ok, Retail boots, but still Kp on DMG...

Ok, I'm now getting nervous...

Maybe I'm was running Voodoo kernel with no Setabelt.kext ?

So I ran the script again (5-7), checking that kernel 9.7 was installed...

Still KP on DMg mounting and...no external device mounting...

Back to IPC, open Retail drive and can't see the match kernel (only the boot file). decided to repair permission, update mkext...you know, to make something.

Back to Retail drive...no boot, I mean...reboot.

Back to IPC, ran script step 5

Back to Retail drive...reboot.

Back to IPC, ran script step 5-7

OK, Retail drive boots now...

But still no match kernel in the roots of the drive ? Ah ok ! I'm now running script v3.5 (I was before running v3.3, who as ben working for me formely)

Now everything seems to work...DMG / external device, sound, ethernet...

But

No processor infos, despite running the script for it at least 5 times (but still say " your current CPU info is : Intel Core i7 920 CPU")

Sometimes, Chameleon just don't react to my keyboard and don't allow me to boot from a diferent drive.

And still not sure what caused my BIOS error...

Last step Updating to 10.5.7 (problems but succesfull at the end :D )

It's always when it's working that you want more and screw everything...right? Who really needs to update, let's be honest ?

Anyway, I you seemed to have succes doing the update, I run it.

The system was about to quit and install, but stayed freezing on the "Apple cosmos Picture" where it's supposed to really install update. I had to reboot manually since there was no CPU or Drive activity.

Relaucnh install...reboots by itself, install proprely with the cosmo picture. Ok reboot.

DMI pool Data is now a long period of my boot...

Reboot twice.

Succefull.

OMFG what a day, what a day, what a day.

Questions

-Is there a way to update BIOS without installing Windows (fed up with installing) ?

-Do you have a clue what happened and made the DMG KP and the unmounting device ?

-What do these Ebios erros mean ?

-Why is there still in the root of my drive a boot file but no match kernel. Can i delete it ?

Best regards,

Take care.

PS to MAJ : yes Jamaica is really a good place to be...but you need to have connections if you want to feel safe...I was here for a documentary shotting and had a really good time. Still have good links up there, and maybe some more film projects. I was planning to install some hackintosh over here also, as it's really a big money saver for people who want to run a pro post production studio but are very short on money.

More bless fire !
