Could it be possible to split EX85-UD5 + vanilla kernel conversation to a completely new thread and leave this thread for voodoo based installations ?

 

It seems that now there is 3 different install methods in this single thread it is quite confusing to everybody, you never know what method people used when they discuss about problems they have. It would also help new people just starting up with their first installations. Now the information about specific methods of installation gets lost in a flood of messages.

 

It is because people are trying to get ahead with the new kernal. Seems like it is creating a lot of confusion. On top of that, we are trying out Chameleon 2 which has problems in itself. I think a ton of stuff is going to change once Snow Leopard hits. People need to try and find a solution that just works for them at the moment. I am using the script before the last update and am having the issue of the computer not completely shutting down. But you know what, at least everything else works. I am not going to tinker with it until the next OS update hits or Snow Leopard comes out and the script is updating for one of those versions.

 

I would like everyone to understand that DD is pretty much running the show here. We all owe him a ton of respect. Please be polite and patient. If you can figure something out on your own that works, maybe that info will be helpful to DD.

 

Is it possible to have a link for boot132.iso special for ud-5??

It seems like you are looking for an easy solution to get the UD5 board working. I am sorry to tell you but there is not going to be a .iso for our boards. There is much more involved as I am sure you can see. You need to read this thread, especially the first post.

Through all my troubleshooting and of course with the help of others this is what I have concluded should be done for a successful install.

I am doing a new installation based on DD's LASTEST scripts as of 5/2/2009 w/ Chameleon 2.0 rc1

 

The system should read as a MacPro4,1, DDR3 1333Mhz, run on the 9.6.3 kernel and boot with -f and -v

 

To do that this is what I followed:

 

After unzipping the Installer:

 

1. Open the '~extra' folder

 

-Open the Bootloaders folder, Chameleon_v2_RC1, Extra

-Right Click on smbios.plist and scroll down to the following line '<string>MacPro3,1</string>'

-Change the value to MacPro4,1 and File>Save

 

2. Open the 'Kernels' folder

 

-Move the mach_kernel and System.kext back into the _Voodoo_9.6.0 folder

-Open the _Vanilla_9.6.3 folder and move the contained mach_kernel and System.kext to the root of the Kernels folder

 

3. Open the 'Kexts' folder

 

-Open the Misc_Patches folder and then _to_install

-Right Click on AppleSMBIOS.kext and click on 'Show Package Contents'

-Right Click on Info.plist, open it with Text Edit and scroll down to the following line '<string>1600</string>

-IF YOUR RAM IS 1600MHZ change nothing otherwise change the value to 1333 and File>Save

 

3. Open the 'Plists' folder

 

-Open com.apple.boot.plist in TextEdit

-Scroll down the the following line '<string></string>

-Input -v -f and File>Save

 

4. Open Disk Utility

 

-Create a single GUID partition on your target drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

 

5. Launch 'RUN-PATCHER'

 

-Enter password

-Select target disk: OSX86 disk0s2

-Install bootloader

-Set partition as active

-Run Retail DVD Installer, unmount then 10.5.6 Combo Update and unmount

-Modify processor info, press enter

-Run Kext Installer

-Select About this Mac Graphic

-Exit

 

6. Open Terminal

-Sudo -s

-cd /Volumes/OSx86/Extra

-mv Extensions Kexts

-Reboot

 

TA DA! it boots,reboots,shuts down, and sleeps*, updates and everything works as it should

 

*Can't wake up due to 4870 but works with 7300GT

So, when you reversed the process, with the Extensions folder loaded with the extensions again, the system was unstable or unpredictable?

 

If wonder if just deleting these kexts altogether, after the mkext is created, would be a solution, too?

My brand new system wouldn't boot at all with the kexts in the /Extra/Extensions folder.

 

As for deleting the kexts after building the mkext, although it would work just fine, it's probably more informative to move them to a folder other than /Extensions. That way people could see what kexts they are using when they are trying to trouble shoot a problem. Just my $.02 worth.

I really appreciate all your support. I really do. It means a lot to me. It's this support that inspires me to keep working. But, at times I don't feel it's been worth the effort. I know I can't please everyone, but I really try.

 

Since the release of the Chameleon 2 bootloader or, more specifically, since I incorporated that bootloader into the script, things have been a bit hectic. Many wanted to try out new bootloader, as did I. So, I, foolishly perhaps, tried to make it work the best way I knew how. After a few hiccups along the way, I found something that worked for me and uploaded it for the others to use. Unfortunately, it was found to not be a workable solution for everyone. Understandably, that created a bit of confusion and anguish on the part of those not able to, at the very least, boot their system. Especially if they had a previously bootable system. I can understand that.

So, development picked up as I tried one thing after another. Some things may have been lost along the way as I tried to prioritize my time on a working solution. There are a lot of things I'd still like to do - like get a comprehensive log created in the script, so we can troubleshoot installs, incorporate a simple EFI string creation routine so we don't have to use the audio/video injectors and which will help speed up boot time, etc.

But, first order of priority is to ALWAYS create a bootable, working system. If I can't enable that, then everything else is moot.

 

I like to think we are all a team, a community of users and Mac enthusiasts eager in our pursuit of a cost effective, but powerful, Macintosh.

Anyhow, enough of that.

 

Thanks to further research and your input, we will no longer use the "Extensions" directory in /Extra. This appears to be the solution. In its place is "Stored_Kexts", where all kexts from the script will get copied. A boot cache (mkext) file is created from it that the bootloader will use to boot from. I tried to think of a more useful name, but I used "Stored_Kexts" because it I want users to realize this is just a repository and not the live kexts the system is actually booting from. It's the boot cache created from the stored kexts that boot the system.

 

So, after the boot cache is created, the script changes the permissions of the "Stored_Kext" folder to a user writable stage, so you can delete/add other kexts at will. When you have done that, you can simply select "Update boot cache" from the script to update the boot cache (mkext) file and be ready for reboot.

 

Let me know what you think.

Anyway, I love your ideas to add to the script. If I do so suggest, when I press 'Modify Mac model name' where are those values read from? They should be pointed to read from the smbios.plist of course.

 

Anyway great work everyone, especially you DD, I wouldn't own the computer I do right now nor would I be running OSX86, we couldn't have done it without you.

 

 

If you could tell me the code to change the permissions on the Stored_Kext folder that would be great since I rather not reinstall again eheh.

I have not idea if this will help anybody but I noticed that i was having really quirky stuff happening to my DD 9.7 (4.26.09) retail + extra install. It wasnt until i actually reformated the EFI partition and rebuilt the disk in disk utility that things seems wired properly. I had made a few attempts at getting the efi + retail (wolfienuke) setup going to no avail, but diskutility never erased that partition I think when re-partitioning the drive. I dont really know... Just if any of you out there have tried the wolfienuke option make sure to google how to erase the EFI partition through terminal. Just to rule out that as an issue. I dont even remember how to do it now, just followed some blog someplace...

The Mac model name is derived from the model identifier. The Terminal command sysctl -n hw.model will reveal the identifier the system is using. Of course, that identifier is planted there by any number of possible files that pretend to supply it from the hardware, like AppleSMBIOS.kext (EFI v9), smbios.plist Cham2), kernel flags in the boot.plist (macmodel=MacPro3,1), etc.

 

So, based on that identifier, we do a lookup in the SPMachineTypes.plist, located at System/Library/SystemProfiler/SPPlatformReporter.spreporter/Contents/Resources to find what the model name is.

This plist is what we change to modify the Mac model name.

<key>MacPro3,1</key>
<string>Mac Pro</string>

So, given that we have determined our identifier to be MacPro3,1, we can change the string to anything of our choosing, like the following:

<key>MacPro3,1</key>
<string>Hackintosh Pro</string>

So, if you want to use a new (non-existing) identifier, then we'll need to add that key to SPMachineTypes.plist

Add the key and string, don't modify an existing one:

<key>MacPro4,1</key>
<string>MY_NEW_NAME_HERE</string>

The new systems obviously already have this new key and likely 10.5.7 will include it, so we soon won't need to add this key.

For a fully writable folder:

chmod -R 777 "/Volumes/MY_DRIVE/Extra/Stored_Kexts/"
chown -R root:admin "/Volumes/MY_DRIVE/Extra/Stored_Kexts/"

 

You probably already know, but in case anyone doesn't, you'll need to change the permissions back prior to updating the boot cache:

(If you don't, the boot cache will never update.)

chmod -R 755 "/Volumes/MY_DRIVE/Extra/Stored_Kexts/"
chown -R root:wheel "/Volumes/MY_DRIVE/Extra/Stored_Kexts/"

 

Then, you can do the following and update the boot cache:

kextcache -a i386 -m "/Volumes/MY_DRIVE/Extra/Extensions.mkext" "/Volumes/MY_DRIVE/Extra/Stored_Kexts"

This is really true. I had the same issues with my EFI partition when converting over to Cham2. The bootloader on the EFI partition kept taking over, so that partition needed to be erased.

Exercise caution: Replace the X with the disk identifier of your hard drive.

Because partition 1 is always the EFI partition, if you get the disk identifier wrong, the worst that can happen is the wrong EFI partition is erased.

diskutil eraseVolume "HFS+" "EFI" diskXs1

Yeah, it'd be nice just to be able to use the one or the other. Now that the vanilla kernels ignore our kernel flags with our RAM specs, we'll need a easier way to make these changes.

 

Making the AppleSMBIOS.kext easily editable would be nice, but would be more difficult to implement, because it contains nested dictionaries and you can't edit nested plists in the Terminal with a simple "write default THIS_PLIST THIS_VALUE" I'm more inclined to wait and see what Apple has supplied in the next OS that, hopefully, is easier to access. Hopefully, there'll be native support for reading our RAM specs, but it may not happen.

If it doesn't happen, then I'll come up with a way to change those values in the AppleSMBIOS.kext, because I like a challenge!

Thank you joeblough. You solved my problem. My machine booted for the very first time thanks to your tip. If anyone else is having problems similar to mine (see my previous post), you can try the following procedure assuming you have run the 4/26 DD script (steps 1-5) on a freshly formatted drive.

 

My drive is called "OSx86" so you will need to substitute the name of YOURHARDDRIVE wherever it occurs below.

 

1. (in Finder) trash "Extensions.mkext" located in your /Extra folder

2. (in terminal window type) sudo su -

3. (in terminal window type) cd /Volumes/OSx86/Extra

4. (in terminal window type) mv Extensions Stuff

5. (in Finder) trash all your caches in both /System/Library/Caches/ and /Library/Caches/

6. (in terminal window type) kextcache -a i386 -m "/Volumes/OSx86/Extra/Extensions.mkext" "/Volumes/OSx86/Extra/Stuff"

7. There will be some warnings. I ignored them.

8. (in terminal window type) cd ..

9. (in terminal window type) chmod -R 755 Extra

10. (in terminal window type) chown -R root:wheel Extra

11. (in terminal window type) diskutil repairPermissions /Volumes/OSx86

 

In conclusion: For whatever reason, it seems that we may need to keep our kexts away from Chameleon 2. I'm too much of a noob to have any real insight into the matter. I built my machine 3 days ago. I'll leave the real fix to the professionals.

if you are hanging at this point, its because either the kexts for the sata ports did not load, or the sata ports are not set to AHCI mode, or com.apple.boot.plist is calling out the wrong uuid for the boot disk, or you have called out the wrong device/partition in the rd=diskXsY argument, if you have one.

 

one of the lines in the output says what UUID the kernel is waiting on. if you can run disk utility on your boot disk, you can do a get info on the partition and see what the UUID is for that volume. does it match?

 

edit: well it's probably not rd=whatever because you don't see the messages about waiting for the UUID if you've given the rd= arguement.

 

also have you tried booting with -f ?

Looking at his screenshot, can anyone tell if the system is loading anything other than the patched kexts? Doesn't appear to be to me.

 

neils, when you installed OS X from the other system, was "Ignore ownership on this volume" disabled?

With the drive installed on your other system, select the drive icon and do Get Info. On the bottom of the Info window is that option.

 

I'm curious about the permissions in those critical system files. In Terminal, do this:

cd /Volumes/YOUR-BOOT_DRIVE/System/Library/Extensions
ls -l

(That's a lowercase L after ls)

This should provide a list of all your extensions in S/L/E and their permissions.

 

Do this and we'll fix this thing once and for all.

EDIT: I don't think it would be the UUID, because he's already booted into that drive. It's just not loading the rest of the kexts from S/L/E. Now, if he was on the EFI partition, then yeah, this would be a issue.

I'd like to clear this one up once and for all. I think I can figure out what the Combo Update is, but.. how important is it, if one is already trying to install the vanilla 10.5.6? This may end up being the one important step that everyone else was taking for granted but I was skipping.

 

Oh, and Digital Dreamer, make no mistake: Your efforts are greatly appreciated. I mean, I basically can achieve a working install already. I'm just having persistent issues with graphics. I'm not the only one having my particular issue. There's probably nothing that can be done about it except to keep trying slight install variations until OSX finally likes what it gets.

I tested out the 0.2.2 voodoohda kext (in s/l/e) and it works like a charm with the 889a. The only problem is that it reports the title of your line out in your sound preferences as unknown (no biggie at all, its not like the title matters). But it shows headphones as headphones in the front headphone jack. Didn't try any line-in/microphone.

I personally like this because it is all-in-one and works seamlessly.

• We have a "Stored_Kexts" folder in lieu of "Extensions."

After the original kext install, you may simply delete/add kexts of your choosing in this new folder.

When finished, select "Update boot cache" to create the mkext file and you're ready for a reboot.

 

• We have support for the MacPro4,1 identifier.

If you are using this new identifier and one doesn't exist in your SPMachineTypes.plist, one will be created, allowing you create a custom Model Name for your system.

Well anyway, I followed these instructions (except I used 9.7.0) and I was able to get Digital Dreamer's 05-02 script installation to boot successfully. It didn't give me QE/CI, though (same net result as his older script), so I went ahead and did the drivers / motmot kext installs and OpenGL.framework replacement. This time, instead of getting a Blue Flash of Death, I got a black screen saturated with white pixelated garbage.

 

It's nice to see a different failure after a week of the same thing. I only wish this particular failure had a known fix. ;p

 

It's worth adding that I can still boot back into this installation if I remove ATIRadeonX2000.kext. Quite evidently, the kext which is causing all of my woes is this one. Unfortunately, it also seems that this is the kext most directly responsible for enabling QE/CI, as they are not enabled when it is missing.

Thanks again. I did however already install using the new script. Should I enable ignore ownership and try a new install ? Should I only use the script, and do nothing manually ?

The new one that I just released minutes ago? (11:30 p.m. or so my time - I spent a little more time with the front page tutorial after that.)

 

You had your settings correct. It clear your system is not loading anything from your Mac OS install, just the kexts installed by the script. That's it.

 

Try these things and report back with your findings:

1)

If you did install with my new script, remove all kexts from the Stored_Kext folder with the exception of dsmos.kext, Disabler.kext, and System.kext. Run script and "Update boot cache" and reboot with -v -f flags.

These kexts are the minimum required to boot.

Did you say you installed using a 10.5.6 DVD? It might sound silly, but how about downloading the 10.5.6 combo updater (big file) and installing that over your OS install? Like you, I'm running out of options. But, given that this install process works for so many people and that the log only shows the patched kexts being loaded and stalling there, I'm inclined to think something being amiss regarding the OS install.

If you're in a position to do a erase and reinstall, do so with the Chameleon 1012 bootloader instead of Chameleon 2.

I just now managed to get OSX to boot with the 4870 drivers and Motmot kext, thanks to Digital Dreamer's latest script, Crash4419's custom dissection of said script, and one final item which I found hidden in another thread. The last thing (perhaps the only thing I was missing all along) was the apparent necessity of manually deleting /System/Library/Extensions.mkext. So, maybe I just never saw it clearly outlined and I'm blind. ;p

 

Now... the problem is that even though I definitely have the 7_radeon_hd_48x0_drivers.pkg, the latest ATY_Motmot.kext, and the replacement OpenGL.framework all installed, I don't seem to be able to change resolution, and QE/CI are still off. It's like it never happened. What I think is going on is I simply don't have enough familiarity with OSX to know where to look to enable or change these variables. But it's a fact that my System Preferences only gives me the option of 1024x768xMillions, which seems to be what Digital Dreamer's latest script sets as default (the older script used 1280x1024, and I don't even have that as an option, even though it was obviously working in older installs).

 

Anyone know what's going on now?
