by the way, there is a slight problem with the new /Extra install. even though everything seems to work, i see log messages as its booting indicating that some kexts can't resolve their dependencies; in particular the IP over firewire kext is complaining that IONetworkingFamily.kext has version 9.9.9. as a result there's no firewire interface in the network control panel. this is a feature few people use though, so its probably not that important. but it makes me wonder if other kexts are not loading right.

 

i think this could probably be fixed by fine tuning the version numbers of the kexts in /Extra so that they get load priority over the vanilla kexts but don't have humongous version numbers. to be honest i dont know why 9.9.9 can't satisfy all deps, but i guess maybe because the major version is 9 the loader rejects it?

Sorry does DSDT have to be run off the same machine as your installing for? I've been using DD script on my MacBook Pro with a external HDD.

 

This is what he sent me in PM

 

If you have run the installer from a different Mac, make sure you do not install the DSDT patch from that machine, as it doesn't have the correct hardware data for your UD5 board (unless it is the same board and graphcs card, etc.). So, if you have run that DSDT patcher, delete the DSDT.aml file in /Extra. When you have booted into your UD5 board, then you can run that patcher on that board.

Hi, neils,

If you're not logged in as superuser, the script will not continue. Additionally, the only reason there were file permission issues was because we were attempting to copy kexts to S/L/E manually. The script does not copy any kexts to S/L/E and, therefore, doesn't need to do permissions repair in that directory. However, it does repair permissions on /Extra/Extensions after the kexts are copied, then on the mkext file after it has been created.

 

Currently, the script can only install kexts into /Extra, so kexts that need to be copied to S/L/E have to be done so manually.

 

You don't know what version of the Retail DVD you have? I have the original 10.5.0 Leopard DVD. After installing it, I immediately install the 10.5.6 combo updater. Download the 10.5.6 combo updater from Apple's download site. That will cover any DVD version up to 10.5.6.

 

Uploading your boot.plist file as text would be helpful and allow us to, at least, factor that out of the equation. Use the one that gets copied to /Extra to be sure.

 

neils, have you been able to run any OS on this system? Have you determined that your hardware is properly setup, no OC and RAM properly configured in BIOS?

Yes, al hardware is installed correctly and works flawlessly (although I don't use the pc for day to day use yet because of known reasons) on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

 

The Corsair Dominator memory is configured correctly as well in the bios. It's running at 1600 mhz, like it should, because its 1600 mhz ram.

 

Anyway, installing again. Let's see :-)

Yeah, I'm noticing that bit by bit. The thing about the dependencies messages I'm not sure about is whether those messages appear when the kernel cannot resolve the dependencies within that directory, or whether it's when it has searched all possible directories (in this case, /Extra and S/L/E). When you pack Extensions in /Extra, for example, there are dependency warnings on all kexts, in spite of the presence of S/L/E. So, it appears to be a dependency issue for that directory, at least as far as packing extensions are concerned.

 

Additionally, I'm under the impression that some of these issues occur because there are plugsin (basically, kexts) within the kexts in /Extra that have unchanged version numbers. There have never been any attempts to up those version numbers that I know of. Is this because those plugins inherit the higher version number of its parent and, therefore, version number increases are not needed (for the plugins)? I'm not inclined to believe that, as it looks like the system is not consistently loading all plugsin of a kext with a increased version number. Witness the System.kext issue. Few of those plugins in /Extra get loaded, likely because the one in S/L/E has the same version number, in spite of its parent version. Which get loaded depends on the roll of the dice. This would explain why some users experience working Bluetooth, USB, etc., on some boots and no working devices on other boots. But, then again, we didn't have this System.kext issue in the older bootloaders. So, it may be the way the bootloader is handling the child kexts. I wouldn't know.

 

Funny thing is about that System.kext is that not everyone is experiencing the loading issue. I have the 9.6.0 System.kext in S/L/E on both of my installs have experienced none of these issues in Cham2. Why is that? It appears there may be a little overlooked situation that must occur to make this work, or not work. I haven't determined what it is, yet.

 

The IP over Firewire service is odd, because I'm using the same kexts from EFI boot and don't recall missing that service in Network. But, it's certainly missing now. Not that I need it, however.

 

One thing for sure, the bootloader release appears to be a whole different kettle of fish.

Appears to work just fine on the new bootloader, Chameleon 2.0 RC1. But, if you use it on any older version, you'll get a system clock issue where everything is sped up x2.

Instant reboot after chameleon again. Installed OSX on my old hack first (after formatting my harddisk) Ran the script, installed the 123 kexts, repaired permissions. Instant reboot after I see the apple logo. V-mode doesn't help, the system like instantly reboots. Other kernels don't work either.

 

I will add my boot.plist, but it's just the same as the one in the script. Could I upload a log or something ? I have to admit, it's getting frustrating to me. I know it has to work though, and it will. It will !

MAJ, did you have to do anything special to get Time Machine up and running? I just installed another hard drive in my computer, formatted it to HFS+ Journaled, and then tried to select it as the Time Machine drive, when I got this error:

 

Time Machine could not be configured.  The built-in network interface could not be found.

 

Currently, I connect to the Internet over a Netgear WN311B 802.11n adapter (with some Broadcom chipset in it, something from the 43xx line), and one of my ethernet ports is hooked up to a gigabit switch with no Internet access while the other has nothing plugged into it at all. Could any of that be what's causing the issue?

 

I read a little into the Time Machine errors thread elsewhere on the IM forums, and it suggested that there was a hacked IONetworkingFamily.kext that might fix the error... but your script already includes one. Is this the same hack, or should I find some way to combine the two?

It did make OS X think my Airport card is an ethernet card, though, and my unplugged ethernet port an Airport card. So use with caution, I guess, although it looks like it's just a cosmetic thing, since I can get on the Internet and access my fileserver just fine.

Did you find out what version of OS X you are actually installing?

Additionally, are you certain that this DVD is a RETAIL version of the OS X installer, not a machine-specific version that is included with retail Macs?

Okay, I'm having a hard time keeping track of everyone's issues. They all start to blur, forcing me to go back and reread the previous posts to figure out what "page" we're on.

So, you have the "legacy" kexts in S/L/E, now?

Which system/method gave you the greatest stability?

I can give you my updated script, but with the old patcher that installs all kexts in S/L/E. Would that work for you?

Success for me with this motherboard and at the 920 cpu with 9800gtx. everything works great.

 

Big ups to Digital Dreamer for responding to my PM so quickly and helping me understand that I couldn't run the dsdt patcher while working on the drive at another machine. (I was installing on friends computer then migrating the drive to my machine)

 

Using DD's script with voodoo 9.6.0 kernel and no video kext at all.

modified plist for the busration=20

then installing NVinstaller v.52 after boot up

the rest is completely DD's default install

 

sleep

shutdown

restart

sound in and out

video is supported with Quartz Extreem

Things have been great besides this.

 

Machine was on a 12 hr qmaster render doing great. faster than the 2.8Ghz 8-core MacPro and 3.0Ghz 8-core MacPro. Pretty awesome for no overclocking yet.

 

Need to get this kernel panic sorted since Quicktime is a big part of my workflow.

 

and yep this is the 2nd time ive typed this post, that is the panic happening right before i tried to post this!!!

Those KP look very much like hardware triggered exceptions. Commonly seen in OCing, though yours is not OC. But, I'd suspect RAM or temperature issues. Double-check that your BIOS is configured properly for your RAM and that your temperatures are within range.

From reading the latest posts, it appears that I'm having the Chameleon 2 /Extra problem as well. A lot of my kexts are not getting loaded at boot time and boot never completes. It seems to go into a loop at the mDNS responder stage. I have a brand new UD5 w/12 gigs of Corsair 1600 XMP. My CPU is a 920 currently running at stock speeds (one thing at a time, right?). I ran the latest DD script (awesome!!!!) steps 1 - 6 with 10.5.6 retail disc. Lastly, I ran chmod/chown recursively on the /Extra directory and then repaired permissions on the entire drive.

 

I've included pictures of my bios, boot screen, and my root directory. I apologize for the low quality of the first two. I'm by no means freaking out yet. I'm sure this will all get sorted out sooner rather than later.

 

I do have one question though. How do I determine what version of the UD5 BIOS I am running? I swear, I've looked everywhere. This should be pretty obvious, right?

for people that are messing with putting new kexts in /Extra/Extensions:

 

are you just dumping the kexts in that directory? it seems to me like this might not actually work. i always make an Extensions.mkext and put that in /Extra, and in fact i usually rename the /Extra/Extensions directory to something else so that Chameleon can only see the Extensions.mkext.

 

i dont know why, but this seems to work better than just putting the extensions in /Extra/Extensions.

 

if you read d_d's script you can find the line that creates Extensions.mkext - its a program called mkextcache.

Guys, I need a hand for sure. It seems whatever I do, my system just wont work. I've been working on it for another 7 hours today, but no luck. I guess it's gonna be a long night again.

 

I've got some specific questions. I am gonna start from scratch all over again. But before I attempt any new install I want to verify whether I don't forget any steps.

 

I downloaded the latest DD script, with the newest Chameleon. The so called X 58 MOBO installer script. In the x 58 mobo installer folder , I can see there are folders for the kernel, extensions etc. Do I have to add or remove any kexts in any of the folders ? Default the script install the kernel in the root folder, is that correct ? Besides the kernel, there's also a system kext present in the root of the kernel folder. Should I copy this system.kext to the misc. folder in kexts ?

 

Anyway, can I just install without modifying any of the kexts or kernels in the installer folders ? There's also a folder named ' plists' . Does the script automatically copy that boot.plist ? Should I modify that script ?

 

I know I shouldn't run the DSDT patcher, since I install from my older Pentium D hackintosh. So what I did up till now in install step by step. I will, again, repeat the steps I took.

 

1: Put the disk I want to install the retail 10.5.6 (yes it is a retail for sure) on in my older Pentium D Hackintosh, which runs on a GUID partitioned disk.

 

2:Download the x 58 mobo installer script from DD. Note, I didn't download any additional kext packages, nor did I change anything in the x 58 mobo installer kext folder or kernel folder

 

3:I formatted the disk I want to install 10.5.6 retail on (GUID)

 

4:I ran DD script, I choose the step by step mode. First I installed Chameleon (step 2)

 

5: After doing that, I set the partition I want to install on active (by using the script, option 3.

 

6: I used script option nr 4 (install retail) to install OSX on my new harddisk. This goes all well.

 

7:I don't run the dsdt patcher, since I know I would destroy my install. I know I should run this as soon as my new i7 boots

 

8: I run the kext installer, which installs the default kexts and kernel DD added.

 

I repaired permissions using the standard console commands, I repaired permissions for the extra/extensions folder and for the s/l/e folder

 

I put the disk in my new i7, (Gigabyte UD4-P) just to see it wont boot.

 

I tried to copy all kexts from the extra folder, repair permissions through console and then reboot, but that doesn't help.

 

I also used the above procedure (step 1-8) but also added the boot 123 kexts DD provived a few posts above to the S/L/E. Repaired permissions again through console. This also doessn't help.

 

 

Does anybody have a detailed procedure for me about what to try ? I'm still calm, but it's getting really frustrating considering the amount of time I already put in this. I'm not new to OSX, I am already running OSX on an older Pentium D. I know how to install kexts, kernels etc. I came at a point however where I really don't know what to do anymore. I just don't want to give up, because I know it should work. Other people are running OSX as well on their UD4-P. Beside my Geforce 8800 GTS 320 I dont have any additional PCI or PCIE cards installed, so that can't cause the problem either.

 

Anybody ? Is anybody willing to guide me through by using msn or something like that ?

yes, probably your system wall clock is running fast now. do the icons bounce really fast in the dock? if you watch the clock in the system preferences, is the second hand racing around the dial?

 

if the system timebase is off then results of benchmarking programs are going to be wrong.

i am running a UD4P and i ran D_Ds new script the other night. i think his script may have installed the 9.7.0 kernel but i went back after the script finished and put the 9.6.3 kernel in the root of the boot disk, and also copied the System.kext from 9.6.3 to /S/L/E and to /Extra/Extensions. then i re-created /Extra/Extensions.mkext with the following lines:

 

cd /Extra/Extensions
sudo chown -R root:wheel *kext
sudo chmod -R 755 *kext
kextcache -a i386 -m ../Extensions.mkext

 

there is some doubt as to whether System.kext can be picked up properly from /Extra, which is why i copied it to both places.

 

as i mentioned above it seems to me that one has to make an mkext of the stuff in /Extra/Extensions or sometimes all of your extensions do not load.
