Well, the 48xx kext link is dead, and the how-to guide which discusses QE/CI takes it for granted that one already has their OSX working. It does provide a link to a file called 7_radeon_hd_48x0_drivers.pkg (among other things), which presumably contains the kexts I need, but I can't figure out how to unarchive it. ("7_radeon.pkg is used by OSX and cannot be opened." or "Operation could not be completed (com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error 01.)") I'm at a loss.

Now, that you mention what card, I don't believe the card is the issue. If you are using the included Natit.kext and only that kext for graphics, you should at least be able to boot. So, something else is wrong.

I ran into those KP or waiting for device errors a couple times during the install and never did figure out what the real issue was other than the fact the bootloader just wasn't loading the mkext.file in Extra. I just kept reinstalling the kexts. I wanted to make this work.

Now, on the old boot from EFI setup, it worked the first time after I erased the EFI partition that was interfering with the new bootloader.

Both of my setups (with Cham2 and Extra boot) now have been rock solid. Both sleep, wake and go back to work. VMware runs. I'm very pleased. But, admittedly, I did have a few issues getting it going.

I attempted to install 9.7.0 and the System.kext that goes with it from your earlier post. After doing so the system goes into a constant reboot. I was able to recover from this by booting with the ideneb dvd and launching terminal and restoring the old System.kext and Mach_kernel then rebooted and I am back to 9.6.0 voodoo.

I attempted to install 9.7.0 using OSX86Tools (also used for System.kext.) Is this not the correct way to install?

Am I missing anything ?

Thanks

I just had to quote this one again, as I'm puzzled that this didn't work.

Was this for a standard boot-132 setup? Does OSX86Tools automatically fix permissions during the install?

Prior to each reboot, was there a log dumped on screen?

Hi all,

Anyone have the HotPlug USB issue with kernel 9.6.3 and 9.7.0 ? it don't recognize my USB hard disk even my Iphone when hotplug. No problem with voodoo kernel.

Thank's all.

Regards.

Sounds like the mismatched System.kext issue. If you used the included paired System.kext, you shouldn't have the hotplugging issue. Make sure the matching System.kext is installed with its kernel.

I'm having some trouble with the newest version of your script, MAJ. On the version with the 9.6.3 kernel, I had it working just fine. The new 9.7.0 version installs perfectly, but the trouble comes in when I try to get my wifi card working. I've got a card with a Broadcom BCM4329 chip in it, which under 9.6.3 would enable just fine using the script at this thread:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=51725

But in 9.7.0 that script doesn't accomplish anything. I tried copying the kext it modifies to /Extra, but it just causes it to hang at boot.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Never mind, I just fixed it. I took the modified IO80211Family.kext and put it in the corresponding folder for the patcher, then just reran the patcher, which fixed everything.

I got 9.7.0 kernel installed using osx86tools as well as the system.kext. The problem was actually the bios config I reset the bios to factory and just enabled AHCI. and I was able to boot. Then just as a test I loaded a saved profile (OC'ed to 3.8) and boom it rebooted. long story short I had to increase my voltage on IOH to 1.2 and I am able to boot 9.7.0 now. I also got the macmodel to read 4,1.

I was using DD script and everything was working fine (except I got some random Kernel Panics, don't know the reason).

I've just tried the new script (with and without reinstalling) and now the system doesn't recognize the soundcard. Has anybody experienced the same thing??

Thank you very much (specially to digital_dreamer for all the work) and sorry for my bad english level.

Great.

I was getting concerned that there was something fundamentally wrong with my script after hearing about all the failed attempts. For those that are still getting KP or waiting for device messages, try the -F flag at boot prompt to Force or ignore the boot configuration file. I never used it myself on this setup, however.

Soundcard or on-board audio?

If on-board, does anything show up under audio in System Profiler, or show up in Outputs and Inputs in System Preferences/Sound?

On-board audio, sorry. Using old script (the one with Images) got Outputs and Inputs in System Preferences / Sound. With new script it doesn't show anything in SP / Sound. Am I the only one? :(

I actually am having the same issue. No problem with USB and flash drives with 9.6.0 voodoo, but with 9.7.0 (and correct matching System.kext), my flash drive doesn't always show up. I'm still experimenting with the kexts I'm using to get everything to work, so I'm not sure where the issue lies. I am using seatbelt.kext, which I used to fix disk mounting before, not sure if that could be at the root of it.

First of all, thank you for your awesome work digital_dreamer!

I'm also got this USB problem with both vanilla kernels and matching System.kext

My USB stick shows up if I boot with it in a USB slot. My USB sound card shows up occasionally but most of the time it doesn't.

Which are the USB related kexts in the System.kext?

Thanks again digital_dreamer!

One thing I'd advise if you're using any NTFS formatted drives is to install NTFS-3G and MacFUSE.

http://www.ntfs-3g.org/

I seem to be getting my USB drives to work now, after I included seatbelt.kext. EDIT: Actually, I take it back. I can't just plug in a USB drive if I didn't boot up with a USB drive connected first.

I can't get Bluetooth mouse and keyboard to connect with 9.7.0 (though they work with 9.6.0 voodoo), and when I restart, the board fans keep going. Does anyone have a solution for either of those?

When I'm booting, the console displays this message

kextd[123] a link/load error occured for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/IOBluetoothFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOBluetoothBNEPDriver.kext

Does anyone know how to fix that? Thanks!

For those with the USB issues, post the results from the following commands in Terminal:

kextstat | grep com.apple.kpi.libkern

For the above you should get the following (version 9.7.0), but I'm thinking it's loading the System.kext in S/L/E (version 9.6.0) instead)

	5 64 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kpi.libkern (9.7.0)

Then try this one:

kextstat | grep com.apple.kernel.libkern

For the above you should get the following (version 7.9.9):

   15	1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kernel.libkern (7.9.9)

I'm just now realizing I have version 9.7.0 System.kext in S/L/E on one install, and version 9.6.0 on another. I'm going to do more tests.

I changed the mac model in AppleSMBIOS.kext to MacPro4,1 to match the smbios.plist in /Extra (probably unnecessary) and installed the 9.7.0 kernel once again. For a couple of reboots this worked but all of a sudden it stopped mounting the USB drive, but still mounted the sound card. Rebooted and back to square one, no sound card or USB drive.

The pattern is that once I've installed either 9.7.0 or 9.6.3 kernel it works a while but after a number of reboots it stops working.

Anyway, here are my results:

5 54 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kpi.libkern (9.7.0)

15	1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kernel.libkern (7.9.9)

Thanks again!

Hmmm. Did these results come from a working boot (USB)? They look fine here. If so, then it must not be the System.kext, but other kexts and/or plugins that have the same version number as the ones in S/L/E. I'm thinking the system is having to choose between two equivalent kexts/plugins with the same version number.

What we'll need to do is find out just what kexts/plugins are not loading in /Extra that have a equivalent in S/L/E with the same version. Then, up the version number of those problematic kexts/plugins in /Extra.

That's so odd, as this is the same setup and kexts as Boot from EFI.

MAJ

EDIT: Okay, I'm still convinced the System.kext and all it's plugins are not being loaded on every boot. Why? I have no idea. The OSBundleRequired key is set for root.

The only way to guarantee that that it load now, is to have it installed in S/L/E. Remove the System.kext from S/L/E (you can do this live!) and copy the System.kext from /Extra to S/L/E. You get a series of warnings about the kext and plugins not being installed properly. Then, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on that volume. Reboot. (If you prefer, you can do this while booted on another install and forgo all the warnings.)

This should (I hope) fix all the errors (USB, Bluetooth and audio), as the System.kext lays the groundwork for these subsystems.

Let me know how it goes.

i dont know the root cause of it, but i noticed that there's a kext called something like AppleUSBMerge.kext (it's a plugin of IOUSBFamily.kext). that doesnt load automatically and the iPhone won't work. if i load it by hand with kextload, it loads fine (no dependency problems) and then hotplug of the iPhone starts working.

do a kextstat and look for ...Merge..., and if its not there you have to load it by hand...

MAJ,

Thanks for pointing this out, I didn't realize I still had the 9.6.0 System.kext in my SLE folder. I replaced it with the 9.7.0 kext and it worked like a charm: bluetooth and USB are working perfectly. I'm using the EFI-Parition, I guess that didn't copy the kext over properly either. Anyway, thanks again!

Now if only I could get the motherboard to actually power off when I restart or shut down... Is that what OpenHaltRestart is supposed to do?

tgintheworld,

Ideally, we're supposed to be able to keep the vanilla System.kext (9.6.0) in SLE, with the updated System.kext copied elsewhere (whether EFI partition or /Extra), and it having loading priority over that vanilla version. Unfortunately, it's not working consistently for us, as the vanilla version keeps interrupting. That being so, we're forced to get rid of it entirely and in its place use the updated version.

Yeah, OpenHaltRestart is supposed to fix sleep and restart issues, but a lot of that depends on other peripherals that may not behave nicely. IIRC, when I updated to the 9.7.0 kernel, I had the shutdown issue, too, - it just sat there with all lights activated on the motherboard and the monitor off. It wasn't until I got the /Extra setup going that that issue went away. I'm not saying that's a fix for everyone's situation, but it was for me.

MAJ

Hi, I'm having problems.

I must be doing something wrong, everytime I open 'run-patcher' it asks for my password then doesn't do anything and exits. (process completed).

I don't get a list of HDDs, I have one windows drive one kalyway 10.5.2 disk and one mac formatted blank disk attached. (the kalyway +blank are IDE and thge windows is SATA.

Also I put aside 100GB (of 1TB) on the windows disk as unformatted (that is ultimately where I want this installed) but the disk is only showing 128GB.

Hi DD,

Today I was free off from work, so I have been trying to get OSX to work. Still no success story from my part.

Anyway, here is what I did

1: I formatted my new harddisk from my older Pentium D Hackintosh

2: I Downloaded (just to be sure I had the most up to date script) your latest script, with the 9.7.0 kernel

3: I didn't replace any kexts in the extra folder, because I assume the kexts I need are already there. (is that correct btw, or do I manually have to add the kexts for the UD4/UD5 ?)

4: I ran the script, step by step

5: First I installed chameleon, succes ! (step 2 in the script, install bootloader)

6: I set the partition active (the partition I'm installing the retail 10.5.6 on)

7: I use the script to run the retail installer (Install success !)

8: After the installer was ready, I ran the install kexts (without removing any kext from your download, I just installed as is)

9: The script installs the kernel and the kexts

10: I verified the extra folder on the partition I installed the retail 10..5.6 on. The extra folder is there, and also all kexts are present !

11: I used disk utility to repair permissions on the partition I installed 10..5.6 on

12: I Shut down my old hackintosh

13: I removed the harddisk I installed OSX on, and putted it in my i7 system

14: System boots (I see chameleon)

15: System hangs on apple logo

16: I added the screen I get to see.

I installed OSX 7 times today, and I get this screen time after time. I suspect OSX is loading the vanilla kexts, instead of the patched ones. I am lost what to do now though. 12 hours of work, but still no boot ! Anyway, I know I will get there, it's just frustrating. But you guys know that feeling o so well ;-)

What should I do DD ?

No messages other than "process completed?" With the Terminal window still open, can you scroll up the history and see any error messages?

Is your Mac partition formated as HFS? Looking at the script again, it is expected that at least one drive be Apple HFS. I'll need to add some checks for that portion, so that it responds gracefully.

Post the results of diskutil list from the Terminal. That will help us.

As for the 128GB limit, where do you have the IDE drive plugged in (Is this your 1TB drive)? Do you have SATA Port0-3 Native Mode enabled for your SATA drive?

MAJ

you need to delete the /Extras/dsdt.aml that was created by his script, since its made from the bios on your other hackintosh! this will totally hose you up as you've found.

that's why i asked DD to break out the dsdt creation as a separate step, so you can avoid this pitfall by just not running that step if you are preparing the install on a non gigabyte i7 system.

What should I do DD ?

It's not loading the AppleACPIPlatform.kext for some reason.

I see all the skipping messages, but that's to be expected as the kernel is noticing duplicates of the System.kext files in S/L/E and picking the later versions. Still, I think most of these issues are related to the System.kext not loading all plugins.

EDIT: Ah, thanks joeblough! That could be it. I need your good eyes and intellect.

Yeah, I got the DSDT patch as a separate step now, but I probably need to put a message in it regarding when to use it or not.

Disregard the following if removing that dsdt.aml file is the fix.

Can you trying doing what I suggested a few posts up and replace your vanilla System.kext in S/L/E with the new one?

The only way to guarantee that that it load now, is to have it installed in S/L/E. Remove the System.kext from S/L/E (you can do this live!) and copy the System.kext from /Extra to S/L/E. You get a series of warnings about the kext and plugins not being installed properly. Then, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions on that volume. Reboot. (If you prefer, you can do this while booted on another install and forgo all the warnings.)

This should (I hope) fix all the errors (USB, Bluetooth and audio), as the System.kext lays the groundwork for these subsystems.

If you do a kextstat for AppleACPIPlatform.kext you'll find that it has dependencies in the System.kext in 4 places:

com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform (1.2.4) <18 17 12 7 5 4>

Notice the 12, 7, 5, and 4, and they all point to the System.kext (from a kextstat list)

Hope this isn't barking up the wrong tree. Well, we'll see.

best regards,

MAJ

Now, that you mention what card, I don't believe the card is the issue. If you are using the included Natit.kext and only that kext for graphics, you should at least be able to boot. So, something else is wrong.

I ran into those KP or waiting for device errors a couple times during the install and never did figure out what the real issue was other than the fact the bootloader just wasn't loading the mkext.file in Extra.

That's the impression I got from the countless threads discussing the issue. Because the ambiguous message could mean any of a thousand things, the "fix" is almost always to fiddle around with everything until suddenly OSX likes it.

And that's how it went with me. In the end, my "fix" was to change the SATA drive mode from "IDE" (which Kalyway liked) to ACHI. This allowed OSX to boot, but I did lose video when it normally would have brought up the gray screen. I suspected this was the fault of my 48x0 driver install, and indeed it was, as a clean install of your script gave me a more fully bootable drive. I do wonder how I'm going to get my 4870 working if the guide only results in a loss of video output.

So here's where I'm stuck now: "There isn't a keyboard connected to your computer. Connect your keyboard now."

I'm using a PS2 keyboard, and that is almost certainly the problem. But Kalyway played nice with my keyboard, so I suspect there's going to be a way to get vanilla 10.5.6 to do so also. Anyone know what? Another kext? Use Kext Helper? Thanks as always. ;p

PS: Before somebody suggests getting a USB keyboard.. not really an option. I hit a financial ceiling with the hardware I've got, and besides, I have yet to see a USB keyboard with the fat return key, the backslash beneath it, a normal insert/home/etc. area, a small spacebar, and a small backspace. They all seem to want to prove they're modern by altering the traditional keyboard layout.

Ok guys.

I deleted the /Extras/dsdt.aml file. I tried to boot, but it suddenly restarts after I see the mac logo (chameleon still boots though) Also the pc speaker was beeping like crazy. Booting in verbose mode didnt help, because the computer already restarts after 2 seconds. Not enough time to read any on screen info !

So right after that I removed the old system.kext in system/library/extensions and replaced it as suggested with the newer 9.7.0 version from the extra folder. I didn't delete the 9.7.0 system kext in the extra folder. I opened disk ultilities and repaired permissions.

I just tried to boot again, but no luck ! The system still restarts after just a few seconds.

I know it's not the hardware, because I installed Vista 64 bit on another harddisk (I didn't attache this vista disk btw, all the time I was trying to install OSX I left the Vista disk out) and Vista works just as it should.

What can I try next ? Could it be I shouldn't remove the Extras/dsdt.aml file ?

Do I have to reinstall everything yet again ? Man ! :-(

I use a PS/2 keyboard connected to a PS2 to USB adapter. It takes mouse and keyboard inputs... it's cheap and it works, just FYI.
