No one answered my question about the BIOS with the ethernet, so I'm wondering if someone could just out of curiosity I'd like to see what happens if the ethernet ports are working on your motherboard.

I'll do a few tests tonight, but I did copy about 300GB of photos from my windows SMB share to my mac with no issues... it seemed to copy at an alright rate... but I'll test for you tonight if you like.

I cleared the CMOS and still getting KP as soon as I boot with a network cable plugged in, or if I get it booted without a cable plugged in, when I plug the cable in, it KPs.

Let me ask a question, in BIOS in the integrated periph section, when you click on either ethernet port, what are your results? On on port, nothing happens it just says something about a cable test, and nothing happens, on the other port, it blinks for a second that the cable length is 1m and then that disappears immediately. Is this normal behavior?

IIRC, it should keep cycling and report the length of cable if plugged in. If no cable, it reports it as "open" with "0m". But, it should still cycle, in case one were to plug and unplug for testing.

That's what it did on mine, at least back in F4 BIOS.

regards,

MAJ

You need decrypt or dsmos kext because the 9.6.0 ANV kernel has it built in, and disabler...I am not sure it just panicked without it.

Right. The Voodoo kernels automatically blacklisted the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, AppleHWSensor.kext, and Don't_Steal_Mac_OS_X.kexts, so we could safely leave the Disabler.kext out of the install.

Now, we'll have to be sure to include it.

The dsmos.kext is still needed anyway and is the page decryption EFI module.

regards,

MAJ

Ok, so I have been waiting for someone to post this....and nobody did, so I took matters into my own hands

and with out further ado....

mach_kernel 9.6.3 and it does work on the i7 just make sure you have disabler.kext and appledecrypt.kext

Thanks! This (installed via wolfinuke script) resolved the Java issues I was whining about!

Let me ask a question, in BIOS in the integrated periph section, when you click on either ethernet port, what are your results?

The motherboard is buggy. Both the UD5 and the extreme. The ethernet dies on repeat reboots. I used to get it a lot when setting up my hackintosh. Not so much now as I rarely reboot/switch my mac off.

The temporary fix is this: switch your power supply off, wait for all the lights to switch off, then turn it back on.

From what I've seen, this is OS and driver independent, a BIOS update could possibly fix this but it remains to be seen.

http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/ex58-ud5-problem-28739/

http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/ga-ex58-ex...trollers-30596/

On a separate note, I'm pretty sure wake from sleep only works depending on the settings in the BIOS. The same goes for sound. I'm still debugging it, but at the moment I have a setup for 2.66Ghz, get wake from sleep but the sound is crackling. On another, 3.0Ghz, wake from sleep doesn't work (monitor stays off) and sound works fine (there are more differences in settings than the base clock though).

Anyone come across this?

Strange...

The only research I did for this board was on this thread.

I'm running F4 (came with the motherboard) and it seems to be behaving fine for now. I have rebooted countless times while trying to get this to work. Haven't had any issues so far which weren't caused by me.

Hope you find a solution to your problem.

Maj, Can you please post your versions of AppleDecrypt.kext and Disabler.kext. I've found versions of these two kexts but I'm not sure they're the most up-to-date and I'm experiencing a few little bugs with them... My clock seems to keep jumping forward and I am no longer able to restart successfully.

Also with my EFI partition system can I remove the vanilla kernel and boot from the vanilla root kernel? If so can you advise if/how I need to change the boot.plist. On a related note do we still need busratio=20?

EDIT: The clock issue appears to FSB speed issue (from reading older threads). Anyone experiencing similar issues? I'm not using Chameleon.

EX85-UD5 on vanilla kernel now a reality ;)

Guys I'm so excited, it seems I have managed to install and boot my Hackintosh with the vanilla Apple i7 kernel ;)

I managed to get my hands on a OS X install disk that comes with the new i7 MacPro. I made an image of it and tried the installation. Kernel on the disk is 9.6.3.

1. I booted from working OS X 10.5.5 installation, logged in as root

2. Installed OSX from install disk that comes with MacPro i7. I left "Printer Drivers", "Additional Fonts" and "Language Translations" out of the installation to minimize installation time and used space.

3. Removed /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext and /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHDA.kext

4. Copied my modified com.apple.boot.plist to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

5. Copied dsmos.kext, RealtekR1000.kext, AppleHDA.kext and HDAEnabler.kext from Digital Dreamers Kext package (GA-EX58-UD5_Kexts.zip) to /System/Library/Extensions

6. Installed Chameleon 2.0-rc431

7. Deleted /System/Library/Extensions.mkext

- QE/CI, sound and network all work.

- Shutdown quits OS X but motherboard power sometimes stays on (fans continue spinning).

I removed AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext because it causes a Kernel Panic in boot with the error message: panic (cpu 0 caller 0x76FC3460): "No HPETs available.. CPU(s) configured incorrectly/n"0/SourceCache/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement

I tried playing with HPET and power management options in the bios but this did not prevent AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement crashing, so I just removed the kext.

I'm a bit new to this OSx86 stuff so I'm not sure what kinds of modifications Chameleon makes to the system, but this is very promising :D

I just installed the system, so I have not yet much experience with it.

In the attached Archive.zip is system.log, com.apple.boot.plist, and a couple of pictures. You can see that System Preferences / Power Management icon has been changed.

Hey, the log shows that your firewire device is enabled. Nice!

Tom's HW has new 920 OC'ing guide. Appears that the optimal sweet spot is 3.66GHz.

edit: link was broken sorry.

I installed this in place of the Voodoo kernel in WOLFIENUKE'S method on a retail install. It works, as long as I include disabler.kext. However, I'm having the DMG mounting issues, maybe because the kernel version doesn't match what seatbelt.kext is looking for? But other than that it fixed a lot of small issues I was having, including iPhone connectivity and Xcode debugging. The one thing it didn't fix is VMWare, I'm still getting hard freezes whenever I try to start a VM. I didn't get this in iPC, anyone have any suggestions? I thought for sure Vanilla kernel would fix that. Does anyone have any suggestinos for the DMG/Seatbelt issue too? I also had some strange sound issues in VLC that I've never experienced before, unsure if it's related.

Do you have the default seatbelt.kext from 10.5.6. That's all I am using and DMG's are mounting just fine, no problems with sound either. I didn't use this script I like to build everything myself so I am sure some of my files are different.

Oh, earlier someone had the sweet spot of the 920 at 3.66!?!?! Mine had been at 4.0GHz since I got it its at 4.1 now

Which brings me to a question how to you guys get your system profiler to display the i7 I haven't really tried because it's not that important but just thought I would ask.

I'm also seeing the clock issue. I'm gaining minutes.

I've been able to boot using a plist without the busratio=20 flag, but I'm not sure of what other effects that may have.

You can update your EFI partition using the Wolfienuke script. That's how I've been going at it. I've changed the plist through the script, and by just opening the text file and saving it before running the script.

I'm not seeing this issue. I'm using the seatbelt.kext that's included in DD's zip file of EFI kexts, linked from the first post in this thread. I have this recent 9.6.3 kernel in the EFI partition but am not using the modified system.kext, just the retail one.

OK, it feels like I'm getting there!

Now I can boot into Mac OS X athough it takes several minutes – gets stuck at this point:

http://home.mac.se/star-affinity/boot_stall.jpg

Once I get to the desktop the aluminum Apple keyboard I have doesn't seem to work, but if I connect the mouse (Microsoft IntelliMouse) directly to the computer it works to move the cursor, but's it's really jerky and difficult to control. If I go to the System Profiler (after some struggle with the cursor) it looks like this:

http://home.mac.se/star-affinity/graphics_...ly_detected.jpg

Also, in System Preferences -> Displays I can't change the resolution from 1024 x 768.

I have the newly released ATI Radeon HD 4890 graphics card with 1 GB of VRAM.

Isn't support for this card included in the ”Gigabyte X58 Mobo Boot-132 Installer”?

What can I do to get the graphics acceleration to work properly? Wait for the Mac OS X 10.5.7 update?

Sir, please, instead of teasing us with you skills in finding someone with the i7 MacPro and posting pictures. Please take that kernel and go to terminal and type:

cp /mach_kernel /Users/Matt/Desktop/

This forum has been waiting months for this kernel and to just tease it upon us and not give us the goods, well, then you'd be evil. Please offer to us the kernel now.

Oh, and here's mine:

cp /mach_kernel /Users/Michael/Desktop/

LOL :D

Ok, so I have been waiting for someone to post this....and nobody did, so I took matters into my own hands

I'm glad that you stepped up and did it :) I didn't have the guts. Thanks dude :)

The kernel you posted and the one I have are identical. I wonder if Apple made some other changes to the system and the kexts ?

I'm still testing my system, and everything works so far, but shutdown sometimes won't complete, I suspect the audio driver might have something to do with it, because once it spilled a long row of "assertion fails" after I commanded a shutdown. Sleep seems to sometimes work and sometimes not. After succesfull sleep and wake up, the ethernet has lost DNS ip, and network won't work. Ethernet only wakes up fully and refreshes if I give a new ip to the ethernet card. But then again, sleep is not an importart feature for me.

I'm sure most of the problems will be sorted out after people have been banging on the new system for a while.

We might need a totally new EX85-UD5 guide now that the world has changed :)

I'm going to reinstall my system as I did the original install in english and want it in swedish proper now.

BUT Now I read about this new i7 10.5.6 kernel...

Could someone please take a few mins to explain if this might be the way forward now?

Or is it just replacing the old 10.5.6 kernel with the new one and all might be just dandy? (sounds to much like a dream come true doesn't it...).

What steps to take to install?

Best procedure? Wolfenukies or DD's way, or none of the above, just install the sucker?

Hmm. Those of you that have it working... Will this new kernel in any way enable the original speedstep functionality? I dont want it nor need it...

One of the biggest challenges to building a hackintosh is finding a graphics card that will work. It's a huge deal, because if you have something not supported you get the issues you are having which is an unusable machine. I did my homework and bought an nvidia 9800 because I read that it uses the standard nvidia driver so it was able to work by installing the nvidia kext. I haven't done any homework on your particular card, but there is a graphics card subforum on this board that would be the first place to look.

Copy over the vanilla kernel to the root of your main HD (not the EFI partition) and it should work.

Yup, that took care of VM for me!

Yessir, you are also correct. I forgot i had a seatbelt.kext in my EFI partition. I removed it and everything is peachy.

However, I'm also having the system clock issues. Anyone fixed that yet? Restart is not working for me either. And strangely, my XBench scores are slower with Vanilla than they were with Voodoo, by quite a bit in the threading tests. Anyone have any idea why that is?! Here are my before and after marks,

Hmm... you're right of course.

The reason I got the 4890 was because I know Apple is supporting the 4870 (which is supposed to be very similar to 4890) in the Mac Pro.

Maybe it will be included in the soon to be released 10.4.7 update.

I'll also check the graphics forums, thanks (I've found a thread where they seem to have managed to get the 4870 to work).

OK folks, I need some assistance in the grey matter area...

I decided to reinstall my 10.5.6 to see if I could improve on how I had to jump through hoops the last time to get my GX card working...

Same {censored} this time as well... So I MUST be doing something wrong somewhere!

So brief run through of how I do it:

• boot from Kalyway install on disk 2

• Install OSX 10.5.6 on disk 1

• Run Wolfenukies script

• reboot - ALL good apart from screen res/gfx

NOW Whenever I try to use EFI Studio or OSX Tools, Nothing changes in the com.apple.boot.plist on the efi partition...

Only way so far I have been able to get it working is by manually copying in the string into a copy of the com.apple.boot.plist file and then replace the old file manually in terminal.

THIS cant be the way the rest of you set your gfx cards up right?

So what am I doing different?

DO I need to run Wolfenukies script in a certain mode (-s /-x etc) for the permnissions to be set correctly?

Am I misunderstanding the use of efistudio/osxtools, can they not do their thing on a wolfenukie efi partition?

please help as I'm going nuts here. You get a free beer in Stockholm Sweden when you visit!!! :D

I didn't use efistudio or any other tool, I just modified the plist in Wolf's script to include my EFI string, and removed all Nvidia/ATI kexts from the partition as well. That should be all you need to do.

Ok well first of let me say i know this is incredibly stupid and inconsiderate of me. That being said i want to thank both D_D and wolfienuke for all of their hard work. I have been working at this for the better part of a month. I have built many PC's and figured this wouldnt be that much more difficult. Dont get me wrong i enjoy the process its a puzzle. At this point i have been stuck too many time and taken too many wrong turns. I need help.

my computers guts

Ga-EX58-UD5

i7 920 stock fan

12g DDR3 1600 G-skill

2 pioneer ide dvd

1 pioneer sata dvd

geforce 8800 gts 512

300gb velociraptor

2 1.5TB

silverstone strider series 700w power supply

I have been trying to ultimately achieve wolfienuke's EFI load. First i started trying to load it using my Powerbook G4 with Tiger across a SATA/IDE USB converter(cool tool but ultimately didnt help). Then i realized that i needed Leo to install from I pondered how I boot from Leo when Leo is what i want. I think it was refereed to which came first the chicken or the egg early in this thread. I started by downloading Kalyway 10.5.2 which didnt work. I then downloaded iPC, iDeneb, i ATKOS and boot 132. Was able to get iAtkos to work none of the others. Then found my IDE did not work so i went out to get a SATA DVD drive. i was able to load the EFI_Boot_Installer_v3 with the new kexts on to my velociraptor. The problem now is that when i put in the Leo disk from mac in my SATA it wants me to restart to begin instillation and when it restarts it doesnt continue instillation. As i said at the top i understand that this is very inconsiderate to post this here as this is not a problem with the instal by D_D or wolfienuke but presumably with iATKOS. i figured some one here might be able to help me get around the restart required to load retail Leo or point out another way to do it. I appreciate any help

Don't install with a reboot, you can install from the leopard disk via the hidden mpkg by running,

open /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg

in the Terminal. This will allow you to install to a target drive from a running Leopard install, either your other mac or from iATKOS (I used iPC) to a second HD. Then once you have the retail install on a drive by itself, run Wolf's script against it and workout any GPU issues or other hardware kexts, EFI String, etc. You should then be able to boot from the drive's EFI partition.

I have a near flawless DIGITAL_DREAMER'S STANDARD RETAIL DVD INSTALL on one hard drive, but have been surprisingly unsuccessful getting WOLFIENUKE'S BOOT FROM EFI PARTITION RETAIL DVD INSTALL to work on my other drive. I have tried every conceivable kext combo to no avail, so any thoughts are appreciated. I have attached the boot log below and I suspect the culprit is my HD4870, but plenty of folks seem to have a similar setup (and its working fine on the DD Standard Retail drive?

Hi everyone,

I've been trying for days to get my UD5/i7 rig to work using Wolfienuke's EFI script with my new video card. It's a BFG GeForce 9800GT 512MB. It works fine using DD's script. I have actually gone back and put in my old card which is a PNY GeForce 8600GT and used the Natit.kext which DD included in the recent EFI Boot zip file with a graphics string for the 8600GT. Everything works, including QE/CI. I can't for the life of me get the 9800GT working the same way.

I want to try VMware Fusion using the EFI partition boot method, but I need to get over this hump first.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on what I can be doing wrong? I've read through many threads that people have suggested that I thought might help, but I can only get resolution changes and not QE/CI with the 9800GT and the EFI partition boot method.

Thanks.

Nevermind... I figured it out finally.

I left in the Natit.kext, followed aquamac's GFX string how-to (must have missed the setting to change the PciRoot parameters.) I put the GFX string into the Boot.plist in the root of the script folder and now it works fine. I copied the Voodoo mach kernel 9.6.0 to the root of my boot drive to get VMware Fusion working.

Thanks.

I'm really glad to say that after a few weeks of working on my Hackintosh and browsing Insanelymac, I've got almost everything working smoothly. I've worked though making video, sound, wireless internet (had to use an older IO80211.kext and uninstall any old wireless driver remnants), and a bunch of other small problems. I don't have sleep, but I don't think it's worth messing with it since we'll have snow leopard before long.

Though currently I think I'm having a problem with usb. At least I suspect usb because actually the problem is when I shut my machine down it immediately powers back up by itself. Now that my hackintosh is alive, it doesn't want to be shut off! I have to kill the power to the psu to keep it off.

I'm guessing it's a kext because it wasn't doing this before... which is it?

I'm using wolienuke's EFI partition method with the latest kext.
