How are you planning to get the Nvidia BFG GTX 285 GPU to work as I am unaware of any solutions at the moment?

Also think DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Ram is the way to go given how cheap it is (I got 6MB of OCZ platinum for $69 after rebate.

Thanks for the heads up Bernito, I was assuming any nvidia GPU would be okay.... Any recommendations on a compatible GPU that would give me good performance? I'll look into the ram as well.

Do you plan on overclocking?

I'd go with the 920 and save $300. The 920 OCs to 3.2GHz easily without any voltage changes, well above the stock 940. The 940 has a little more OC overhead than the 920, but not much. So, if you don't plan on overclocking much beyond 3.8GHz or so, I'd stay with the 920 and use the savings on faster RAM, like 1600MHz.

As of yet, there's no support for BL in OS X.

NVIDIA 285 support?!

Agree with DD completely on the 920 CPU, it was an oversight in my first post. You can really crank them up with good cooling (I use a XIGMATEK Dark Knight-S1283V, but there are many good options).

My old Hack has a Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and my new one has an Ati HD4870. Both are good choices. The Nvidia is easy to set up, but the Ati is more powerful.

You used the EFI Boot installer (wolfienuke's script) to install the boot-132 kexts? That isn't going to work.

Either you use the kexts in wolfienuke's script and use his script or use the DD's kexts and his script. One or the other. They don't work together.

Additionally, saying it's not working and asking "why?" is not going to get you a satisfying response. It's similar to going to the doctor and telling him that you don't feel well and expecting him to magically figure out the rest. Not going to happen until he asks you a lot of questions. So, make it easier on him by telling him up front the details of your symptoms, exactly what you have done and exactly what happened up to your last action.

We need details.

MAJ

Heh, heh. It was that "Can't verify EFI partition" bug, huh?

Thanks for the tip.

:hysterical:

I wondered if that 'spell Checker' would get any use! Did the spelling police show up?

Again, sorry, for that issue. None of this is your fault, but mine. I just didn't test for similar names with spaces. But, boy did I test for everything else and various combinations.

Are you RMAing that PSU?

Best of wishes,

MAJ

RMA'd it and new one arrived and works fine.

Call off the spelling gastapo, I found the answer to the "spelling issue." It is not a spelling or similarity issue at all. It appears to be a brevity issue. I renamed the drive "New" and still no dice. Tried Jobsisadouche and it worked! All kidding aside, thanks for the great work on the script and help with the issue. Seems like too few characters is the culprit, so you can devote your immense grey matter to more noble endeavors.

Hey Maj, I am planning on overclocking to maybe 4.0 MHz with the 940.... I did do my research before buying the 940 and did read posts and reviews where people where saying the 920 can overclock a bit higher than the 940 for less money. But I ended up buying the 940, taking advantage of a good deal i came across online. Is faster RAM really mandatory? I have a 2gbX3 1066mhz DDR3 kit by Patriot... Since there is no Blu ray support under OSX can i still use this particular drive and just use it to read everything else but bluray?? HAHA, everyone is bashing me for listing the 285 GPU(wishful thinking?)... I now know its not possible yet but have been reading that it might be possible in future realease of snow leopard. Well i havnt bought my GPU yet but did have my eyes on th 285. With given information and knowledge im now going to invest in the 9800 GTX to make everything work. One last thing, going back to one of my original questions, will i still be able to follow same installation process contained in tis guide? Im guessing i should be okay as to both of our motherboards being similar.... mine is just a model below the EX58-UD5.... will all kexts work fine with my mobo?? Ive tried searching forum to see if someone did an install with my specific mobo (EX58-UD4P) but no luck = \

Thanks for your time and response Maj, i really appreciate it = )

I know the Spin Q isnt the greatest CPU cooler out there but decided to go with it for its look. It matches the blue LED light scheme that my case has. Hmmmm.... i was thinking, would i still be able to SLI two 9800GTX cards under OSX?

Hi, you know sometimes is not easy to follow fail-success process, but what I think I did:

1. Once chameleon is executed fine from RAID, the RAID is known by the system.

2. Just put the kernel mach_kernel.voodoo as mach_kernel.

3. Install KEXTs with OSXUTIL.

4. Edit your plist in consequence, with kernel flags as I indicated before.

Next time you boot chameleon has to go to the kernel and execute normally the system.

The point is that I think I dont use EFI, all the process of partitions I think is not needed.

If problems continue I will try to make a fine tutorial from zero.

Thanks But I'm really interested in the step 1

How did you install the Raid(CarboonCC or From Retai Disk)? How Did you install Chameleon (did you mount the Hide image or from an Installer)?

Thanks

Instead of asking people this question, someone made a tutorial for chameleon 2 RAID. link.

The patches? What u talkin about?

The Carbon copy should work but I am not sure. Just reinstall, it only takes 30 minutes.

Use typical wolfienuke/maj efi boot partition kexts too. Ask us questions after you read the tutorial.

Hi, Thanks for the Link but I Can't see any mention of RAID in that Post. I just tried it but doesn't apears to Work in the First Go (Mayme I will need sometime to Undestand the Process)

Hi all, first post here.

First of all, thanks for all your hard work -- I successfully installed using wolfie's script -- it runs like a charm now. Mobo as in thread title, GF 9400 GT, 6GB RAM -- running 10.5.6. I couldn't have made it without this thread, so thanks again.

But I do have a problem: Kernel panics in VMWare Fusion 2.

Immediately when I try to install a new virtual machine in VMWare (just after clicking "start" in the installation wizard), it panics. I have searched a lot to figure this one out, but to no avail. It seems the common error that causes something similar is that VMWare requieres the kernel to be called "mach_kernel" and not e.g. "mach_kernel.voodoo". But in my case, the kernel is called "mach_kernel", so there should not be a problem here. Unless I am mistaken, and this does not refer to the file found at the root? Would this .voodoo file be located elsewhere?

Are we aware of any other issues that may be causing these panics?

Thanks, hope I can provide help to others as well in due time!

best regards,

P

Try to use OSX86Tools to install your Kernel, this is what I use with EFI installing script and VMWare Fusion 2.0.3 after installing the last update from DD on first post on page one.

it is working for me.

Wow. :)

There's clearly a bug in the script. Sorry about that guys.

I don't know what's up at the moment, but will check it out and let you know.

I'll download the one on the web, as the current one I have has lots of changes.

EDIT: Would you be so kind as to post the results of this Terminal command in the code tags: diskutil list

I can't reproduce these errors and don't know where they are coming from. Clearly, the Terminal is returning null results, but why?

So, are you saying that with the EFI boot method one could install the Voodoo kernel at the root directory of your main install (where the unused vanilla one normally resides) and VMware Fusion will work?

Hi everyone,

I've been trying for days to get my UD5/i7 rig to work using Wolfienuke's EFI script with my new video card. It's a BFG GeForce 9800GT 512MB. It works fine using DD's script. I have actually gone back and put in my old card which is a PNY GeForce 8600GT and used the Natit.kext which DD included in the recent EFI Boot zip file with a graphics string for the 8600GT. Everything works, including QE/CI. I can't for the life of me get the 9800GT working the same way.

I want to try VMware Fusion using the EFI partition boot method, but I need to get over this hump first.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on what I can be doing wrong? I've read through many threads that people have suggested that I thought might help, but I can only get resolution changes and not QE/CI with the 9800GT and the EFI partition boot method.

Thanks.

Hi HeartQ8,

Thanks for the tip -- I did restore the kernel via osx86tools -- and was subsequently able to install Vista in Fusion! Now, I didn't try Vista before this (only xp), so it could be that the original problem persists. But for now I am happy with having Vista available, so I'll leave it at that for now.

Thanks! :hysterical:

This what I been trying to say to you on my previous message loge time ago, I am not an expert but it works. from my reading it seems VMWare look there, it must be a bug.

I would like to thank you for your last update on 2ed of April to EFI script kexts, it solves all my issues and my computer running as I wish with speed. By the way I did update to kernel 9.6 without any issues.

Me and DD tried for a long time to get Fusion working on EFI partition method with no success. This workaround seems so obvious now, but thanks for bringing it to light.

Now all we need to know is if DD was doing this in the beginning when he initially got it working with the EFI boot install. Hmm...

Hi guys !!!!

This is my first post so be kind !!!

I thanks digital_dreamer, wolfienuke and all the other poster of this thread.

I did everything to install with a boot efi partition and a vanilla partition LEO 10.5.6 and it worked.

All the part of the tutorial, but i get random Kernel Panic and i'm not able to fix it.

I think it's du to the 4gb bug with JmicronAtA.kext and the IOATAFAMILY.kext.

What do you think and what can I do to fix it...

Check the pix !!!

Thank you all again !!!

Ok, I made the decision to update to the new chameleon 2.0RC1, but I used the package to install it instead of a manual install (I should have known)...

Here's what I did:

Erased and partitioned an unused disk (So that if sh*t goes wrong - like it did - I would not kill my working install).

I installed Mac OS X 10.5 to the newly created partition.

I removed/installed required kexts.

I installed Chameleon 2.0RC1, Voodoo kernel 9.6.0, and kexts on EFI partition, and rebooted.

No luck...

So I decided to manually install Chameleon/Voodoo on the EFI partition and I got much further (I also replaced mach_kernel on the system partition as well as noted a few posts above.

I guess my problem is that I have made so many changes that I don't know where it all went wrong.

Are there any simple tips to get chameleon working on the EFI Partition?

I'd like to ask if anyone has got sleep to work on their Gigabyte setup and if so what their setup is?

Sorry to go off topic. Besides, I saw no reason to go to a new bootloader since a simple F12 at

POST gets you the same thing. And, beta version too but someone had to be a pathfinder.

Everything is great except for the lack of RAID, Hot Swap eSATA drives, and sleep. The first two would be

icing on the cake but (come on) the lack of S3 (STR) is inexcusable for our beloved Custom MAC Pro hacks.

My specs are:

Extreme version w/ F5 BIOS

920 @ 3.2GHz (watercooled) with 6GB RAM @ ~1066MHz

9500 GT driving 24in LCD (1920x1200) and 20in CRT (1600x1200) with QE/CI enabled

Vertex II SSD HDDs

10.5.6 vanilla w/ 9.6 voodoo kernel

VMWARE Fusion 2.0.3 to run Windows

Let's not stop until we get it all!
