angang
The alias issue only applies to the ASUS motherboards. The Gigabyte mobos don't have that issue. MAJ Thank you for this information. I still always have this problem "only 4 cores"... I'm on my UD4P with UD5 "123 Method"... Hello, I have only 4 cores and i have tried the dsdt patcher Alias removal method but... [the basic install, just the files] 2. It´s good to make a copy, super duper is great for incremental bakcup if you need to back to zero install. 3. Install wolfienuke script in that HD. 4. iamnicos
Hi all, First of all, I want to say a big THANK YOU to Maj and wolfienuke for their job, infos, feedback...You guys rock ! Background I'm a professional video editor, working on Final Cut Pro for a long time. I came to OSX86 world in order to have that missing upgradable middle class machine that Apple seems to have forget...Being able to also work at home on my regular Pc is a real pleasure, a time and a money saver. Also a challenging game to make it work like the "real thing". I'm now ready to upgrade for the Gigabyte UD5, Core I7 and proper RAM. Question I have a question regarding to Firewire issues. It's a big deal to me because I mostly use external hard drives in Firewire 800 and eSATA to be able to work on projects with others sharing datas. Looking at some posts here I've noticied that the firewire chipset turns to be not perfectly working ("ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to to full-secure") ? "Hang on startup at ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to full-secure - Green LAN! Now this one was bit of a mystery (and still is). I was getting random hangs on boot at this message. What made it more tricky was that it seemed completely random - sometimes it happened, sometimes not. After a lot of BIOS tweaking I noticed it didn't happen when Green LAN was disabled. It also seemed to happen more when IO80211Family.kext was in the EFI partition." I'm now running Kalyway 10.5.6 on a ASUS P5K. As some people know, the on board firewire chipset on the card is not working with OSX. I so had to buy a Mac compatible PCI card to have my firewire hard drives working. But still, in some cases, when I deal with lots of informations, the hard drive juste freeze and make the system go into the "Rainbow wheel" mode. Some other times, FCP just can play the sequence, arguing that my drives are to slow to proceed. On boot, it also says "ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to to full-secure". I don't really know if this is the real problem I'm experiencing with my firewire drives, but this is my only track since everythnings has been made yet in order to makes things right. On board Firewire is always disabled. I've of course testd the same drives on a MBP with the sames spec (C2D, 4G of RAMS...) and same test conditions and evrything is playing perfectly. I not asking you guys to solve my P5K problems (not realy the right topic ) but I just want to know : -If you all have the same message on boot (-v mode) : "ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to to full-secure" -If somehow it's affecting your firewire drives (if you have any) -If somes users have FCP "running like Carl Lewis" even dealing with let's say 750Go of DVCPORHD files, multiple sequences in the same time... -If anyone also do have comments on eSATA ports behaviours...feel free to reply Thank you to anyone who would have time to answer. Regards, nicos PS : I know you guys are rigth now more interested on making a proper VM to work on your system but very often only few poeple experience all possibilties of problems working for real on Hackintoch and problems like mine are sometimes never anwsered. Altought, my opinion is that being able to have the full fonctionnality and support of a real Mac in order to work with it is somehow more interesting than trying for weeks to fix the "about this mac" problems. Just to add a controversial topic...that sometimes makes people post.

That error message: "ERROR: FireWire unable to determine security-mode; defaulting to to full-secure" is very common and doesn't indicate any issues. Most of those errors are related to Firewire networking (IP over Firewire) and you can see how it's related to the Green LAN setting in the BIOS, and I doubt you're using it in that fashion. As for your performance issues, I really don't know what's up. In video, I know you need non-skipping, speedy drive access anytime you ask for it and don't want to be held hostage to quirky system behaviors. I'd chalk it up to the Kalaway distro's hacked kernel and other unresolved timing issues/misreporting. Just a guess. I'm not going to say that the current Core i7 platform mobos don't have such issues, as I haven't personally tested it in that environment. I used to have a Firewire 400 external drive, but have converted to eSATA. The only current Firewire peripheral I have is a scanner - low bandwidth obviously. -If anyone also do have comments on eSATA ports behaviours...feel free to replyThank you to anyone who would have time to answer. Regards, nicos My beef with eSATA (on a hackintosh) is that I can't really eject them and have them spin down. Unmount isn't the same thing. It's not really hot-pluggable. Having them plugged into the Gigabyte JMicron ports created more issues. If I "ejected" them, the system wouldn't be able to find them to mount and, therefore, brought me to beachball hell. PS : I know you guys are rigth now more interested on making a proper VM to work on your system but very often only few poeple experience all possibilties of problems working for real on Hackintoch and problems like mine are sometimes never anwsered. Just to add a controversial topic...that sometimes makes people post. LOL! You got a point! But, I don't think all of us need all the features working for us, as we don't use them all. For me, I don't need a wireless dongle. I already had a Airport basestation connected via Ethernet cable. So, the issue of getting wireless and LAN working together (it's a currently unfixable problem), is moot for me. The other point is that not too many of us use a hackintosh in a professional environment, so getting these issues fixed is not a absolute priority. Best of wishes, MAJ There's a new BIOS up, F6. Has anyone tried it already? Does it fix the sleep issues? Does DD have sleep working, and if, with what BIOS? Link to BIOS I'm on F5 and get a KP on wake (boot-132). The boot from EFI setup doesn't wake at all. I plan on tinkering with the CPUhalt kexts and boot.plist to see what we can do. The new 10.5.7 vanilla kernel may be our solution, however. Anybody try it out, yet? (beta, of course!) regards, MAJ

Sumrall
Because you mention that the log describes not being able to find the boot.plist, the first thing I want to see is the boot.plist and its contents. Is it visible and can you Quicklook it?Next, is to make sure each of the kexts in the Extension folder are proper XML files (in human readable form). Open the package of each kext and see if you can Quicklook the info.plist. If you can, then it's okay. If not, then it must have been converted to binary during a Terminal plist write and may create issues with booting. Ok, here's what my EFI installation looks like: And here is the boot.plist: I WAS able to Quicklook the info.plist of each kext so I guess they're alright. In order to replace the old kext with the new ones do I have to redo the partition and add the kext before wolienuke's script? Is there a way to see the entire boot log? because all I see at the end are things like: extension "com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily" cannot be found can't determine immediate dependencies for extension com.psystar.driver.RealtekR1000 can't determine immediate dependencies for extension com.apple.driver.AppleRTL8169Ethernet couldn't alloc com.psystar.driver.RealtekR1000 couldn't alloc com.apple.driver.AppleRTL8169Ethernet

bastardizer
Brief update/question on my struggle. So I got Kalyway installed on one drive, yay... Tried to install 10.5.4, but as that DVD is not structured the same way as the mentioned Retail DVD's I have yet to manage to force it to install. BUT I do think that most of my issues might be related to the following: On boot after setting up the bios according to the first post the post screen flashes very quickly and does not respond to the keyboard (a few tenth of a second) After this I can boot to the Kalaway installed disk with no problem. But if I remove the kalaway drive and tries to do it from scratch the board reboots shortlyafter DARWIN starts to load it just goes trough a few lines... Clearing the cmos only changes this for one boot sequence, as soon as I reboot again the bios wierdness is back. Any ideas for a possible fix, or would this be normal behaviour? bastardizer
Erased my previous text... It looked like it was going smooth during the install, and I finally figured out the proper paths to the installers so I could install without a reboot. BUT I've now tried installing bot 10.5.4 retail and 10.5.6 torrent and neither comes up as a bootable alternative after the installer says it was a succesfull install. I'm sure I'm missing something here, but cant seem to find it. I have tried using wolfenukies 3.1 scripts, the log reports no errors and seems to mount and unmount the efi partition as it should, but still after a reboot Istill cant choose that disk as a bootable osx system drive... I have also no tried Chamelion as well, llokied like a nice enough installer but then what? It didnt imrprove much since... Now I cant get the {censored} to boot... Now it hangs after showing five rows o numbers and then a row with a "J" and a flashing cursor after it. I Really feel im just fumbling around in the dark... bastardizer
WOOOOHOOOO!!!! :D I made it I made it , I , I , I made it Removing my kalyway drive, resetting cmos and setting the bios up properly again it booted. Why on earth I needed to do this I have no idea but now it have booted and now its finally time to see if i can get my grafix and sound etc working, now the fun begins!!! Back to reading the first posts again If anyone already have a 9500gt, please share what u needed to do. BUT I still dont have the Chamelion boot working, Ill try a reinstall now and see if I can mess up again... angang
I don't think the problem is with the dsdt patch, although you should have 8 processor lines visible in the dsdt.dsl file. The BIOS is what supplies this information to the dsdt patcher, so I think it's a BIOS setting.Hyperthreading (HT) just looks to be disabled. The problem is very strange because HT is enabled in my bios. Is your DSDT showing 8 cores, or like mine only 4 cores ? Do you think that i can delete some files on my system (maybe dsdt.aml in the root) ?
bastardizer
So NOW what did I do wrong... Installing the 1.5.6. update, worked fine, rebooted worked fine Rebooted again a few times, worked fine Installed Chamelion, now I get to the chamelion page, can choose boot type etc, but then just after it starts tp boot proper the basterd reboots. And then I'm back into lala land with a short bios post screen, resetting cmos I can get into the bios again and try different setups but nothing fundamentaly changes. Big Sigh! This is really eating up my energy... I'll reboot with a XP disk and install that to another drive and see if I can update/flash the bios... Sumrall
Well I think I've got a success story! Just trying things, I reformatted the EFI partition using Wolfienuke's script, but this time I added all the new kext that were just uploaded. At first it didn't work, but after enabling AHCI it booted up for the first time. I haven't had much of a chance to mess with it. Sleep doesn't work at all. Sound seems to be working. Ram (6GB triple channel) and graphics card (ATI 4870) are recognized. Although I noticed in system profiler that the video ram says 700-something MB instead of 1GB. Any idea why? Also, the biggest issue right now seems to be mass storage devices. I have it enabled in bios. The system profiler even recognizes my external and my flash drive correctly, but they don't mount anywhere on the computer. Any idea why? I really appreciate the help so far. Hopefully I can get everything running smooth, but this was a big step for me.
iamnicos
Hi all, To MAJ concerning eSATA ports My beef with eSATA (on a hackintosh) is that I can't really eject them and have them spin down. Unmount isn't the same thing. It's not really hot-pluggable. Having them plugged into the Gigabyte JMicron ports created more issues. If I "ejected" them, the system wouldn't be able to find them to mount and, therefore, brought me to beachball hell. Hotplugable eSATA Drives On my current workstation (P5K, Kalyway 10.5.6) my eSATA ports are also not hotplugable. It's no big deal considering these are my working video disks : I only decide to plug them when I'm working on the projects they contain. As you say, it's depending on every one uses and what is a pain in the a** for some, is not a problem for others. A guy called "trauma23", french member (like me ) of this forum, explained me once how to make them hotplugable, and sent me kexts and everything, but I didn't understood a word he was writing and decided to forget it. But I know he has been successful with fixing this problem. Maybe you can PM him or make a search on the forum...I'm sure he can manage with english conversation. Unmounting eSATA Drives I didn't experienced any problems when trying to unmount them. I just tried right now, to be sure, and no "beachball hell" appears. I'm using the Jmicron controller and the standar onboard ports. When you say you don't mess with Jmicron, does that mean that you plug your eSATA devices on the motherboard SATA ports with an adapter ? I'm sorry I can only give you my experience but no solutions. Same thing altought, Trauma23 is very knowledgeable on this matters. Firewire issues I guess I have to buy first and try then. I let you know. Thank you for anwsering so fast. I'll maybe out of network for the the next two weeks, going on a shooting, but I'll be up then and ready to take action... New question about graphic cards (to anyone) Just wondering : -If ATI 4870 is the better option, regarding it's an Apple reference ? -If ATI 4890 is or will be supported ? -If newer Nvidia like the GF 260 GTX are supported ? -What is the best way to have a graphic card (any) working on an EFI boot method ? -With the DD retail DVD method ? Understanding those installs include Natit.kext, do I have to replace it with Nvinject to have Nvidia cards working ? When several injectors are included in the DD method (like the ones in the "_repository" and "_to install" folders) wich one is finally used ? Does that mean I have to move the one I'm want to use in the right folder ? Thank you guys I know this is basics questions but I have to guess before to buy... The other point is that not too many of us use a hackintosh in a professional environment, so getting these issues fixed is not a absolute priority. tongue.gif I know, but then, why getting a mac ?
