Hi Guys,

How do you guys back up your installation of osx? I mean I want to back the whole disk partition(s) (inc efi partition) so that if the disk crashes etc I can restore onto a virgin disk and then restore via time machine if required?

Cheers

J

I will not answer your total question.

Super Duper! works with full partition.

The hidden one, EFI, must be re-scripted with wolfienuke script, for example.

Any more methods wih booth partitions?

I just wanted to add Carbon copy cloner to this.

You can backup the EFI partition on a USB stick ! and replace the newly created files and folders once you created a new one with wolfienukes script !

I've not been able to get a boot-132 Retail install to work. Inevitably I see hangs on something or other. I'm using the .zip kext package from the first post, the voodoo kernel included (with its kext) and a plist with just the busratio=20 -v flag, yet making no progress.

Is there a post or thread with thorough details on creating a boot-132 specifically for the EX58-UD5?

This is the thread. You're looking at it.

Since I have no details of your system and what you've done or haven't done, what it hangs on or what the boot log displays, it's going to be hard to help out.

Hello,

I saw the new updated Chameleon-2.0-r431.pkg (april 1st,2009)

What will it install and where ?

Will it install on a EFI partition ?

Actually I don't have an /Extra folder in my EFI partition, do i have to create it ? If yes, what do I have to put in ?

Thanks for your feed back

Their site has a installer for EFI boot setup (mentioned a few posts up). Give it a try. It'll do all the necessary work.

I have a question… does SATA Raid works with this mother board and MacOS X ? -_-

Thanks

No hardware RAID support.

regards,

MAJ

I just use Disk Utility to make a compressed DMG on occasion. It's fast and small.

The EFI partition should be unchanged from your last install. So, hopefully, you'd still have that set of kexts to do a reinstall.

If you can manage to boot a Retail DVD (via boot-132 boot CD), you can do a full restore from TM.

What installer do we use for chameleon for the EFI install? Do we use the Terminal one, or do we use the actual application installer? Is there anything we need to do? Just run the installer? I am confused with this......

Hi All!,

First of all, I want to suggest you a fast memory plug SATA/USB, great for UD5 motherboards and all others. You can follow product here:

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/flash_drives/ocz_throttle_esata_flash_drive

- It´s quite cheap, for 8GB perfect for recovery/maintenance.

- It´s fast! thought SATA port you dont have problems of AHPCI.

- Confirmed It WORKS, boots really fast and smooth.

[end]

Now I would like to comment my break-brain:

- I want to put online 4 OCZ SSDs thought RAID Software stripping 0.

- Everything it´s OK, the RAID, the DVD installation in, the BASE.

- Now I am trying to install last Chameleon EFI, and OK, the system boots with chameleon.

At this point It can´t boot, a panic appears at first second with voodoo 9.6, -unable to find driver ACPI-. I did all post-patch manually, because neither digital_dreamer, neither wolfienuke great scripts dont work with RAID volume.

Really I dont know if I have to change directly in the RAID Volume all kext, plist, kernel (I forgot something?), or if all kext are in Extras Chameleon directory.

[end]

Definetly, SSDs or better, PCI with flash ram will be top on the hill.

Regards,

For now, just use the Chameleon installer. It will set up a folders for you. You will then need to populate the folders with kexts and repack them prior to a reboot.

IS there an updated kexts package for use with wolfienuke's script for the EFI install?

I don't think wolfienuke's going to have that updated anytime soon. However, I'm working on having a download of my set available. Perhaps by weekend. Additionally, I plan to update my script to include both install methods, but, that may be in a couple weeks.

First of all, I want to thank DD and wolfie for all the info and work. I have been lurking for a while and have been able to use wolfie's method to get 10.5.6 retail running on my EX58-UD5. I did not use Kalyway, but installed 10.5.6 on my future hackintosh drive using my Macbook and a SATA -> USB. Then I ran wolfie's script on the Macbook, pointing it to the future hackintosh drive and it worked well.

I am having issues with the audio kexts, however and am looking for the best way to handle them. First, I have no sound, and the driver is reporting this error in the console twice a second:

4/2/09 1:51:29 PM kernel Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in "/SourceCache/AppleHDA/AppleHDA-162.1.37/AppleHDA/AppleHDADriver.cpp" at line 2742 goto handler

Can this audio problem be solved with a simple kext in the EFI partition without modifying the vanilla install? I see dd's initial post has the same version of the kext listed, so I am guessing this would not fix the problem. But this kext is not in wolfie's EFI extension folder, so I am looking for an authoritative answer on the best approach here:

AppleSMBIOS.kext

HDAEnabler.kext

IONetworkingFamily.kext

LegacyAppleAHCIPort.kext

LegacyAppleIntelPIIXATA.kext

LegacyHDAController.kext

LegacyHDAPlatformDriver.kext

LegacyIOAHCIBlockStorage.kext

LegacyJMicronATA.kext

SMBIOSEnabler.kext

System.kext

dsmos.kext

seatbelt.kext

OTHER NOTES ON INSTALL

-------------------------------

First I tried using wolfie's script on my existing PowerMac G5 instead of using Kalyway, but the resulting drive would not boot properly. I am pretty sure that this is due to the fdisk binary included with wolfie's script is for the Intel architecture only and is not a Universal Binary. So don't use a PowerPC machine with wolfie's script right now. Wolfie, maybe you could update to check for PPC or included fdisk Universal Binary? There may be others out there like me.

For easy video card support with Core Image and Quartz Extreme, buy an Nvidia 9600 GT. Then just use OSX86Tools to create a custom EFI string which can be passed to wolfie's script. No modification or installation of other kexts are required since new Macbook Pros support Nvidia 9600 in 10.5.6.

You know my solution but I post this one for the others :

I also use Disk Utility to copy the Mac OS partition to another drive.

Both drives are bootable and contains the magic EFI partition.

The main and only difference is the com.apple.boot.plist file because each drive has its own GUID.

I don't know why you're not getting sound, but you definitely have the older version of the audio kexts. That sound assertion error was a common problem all of us faced as we waited for a fix. It has been fixed with an updated version. I'll see if we can have it uploaded for you this evening.

Do you have any of the audio information showing up in System Profiler? Are any of the outputs or inputs populated in System Preferences/Sound?

I would really appreciate it if you could upload the latest kext for this. Correct me if I am wrong, but I would just place the kext in the EFI/Extensions folder and should be good to go? Would I need to delete any Apple-provided kexts in my system as well? I am trying to keep the system vanilla for an easy upgrade with 10.5.7. Thanks you very much for all of your help.

Ok, so what do we do with voodoo 9.6 and those files? system.kext? Do we put all the extensions in our EFI partition in there?

Alright, I'm STILL having issues with the EFI partition installation.

I have the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5.

I have bought a retail version of 10.5.6.

I am plugging my Hackintosh HD into my iMac via a sata-to-usb adapter.

I make sure the HD is GUID partitioned and blank.

I have successfully installed 10.5.6 onto the HD.

I then run Wolfienuke's script (v3.1) by clicking the install.command.

I'm not adding or removing any extensions.

The install log DOES say something about not mounting the disk after partition, but it looks like it continues (see above post).

I restart.

I plug in my HD to my poor new lifeless computer and...can't get past the boot screen.

Before I was using a copy of 10.5.4. and getting the messages in the above post. Now with the new retail leopard I'm getting things like:

extension "com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily" cannot be found

can't determine immediate dependencies for extension com.psystar.driver.RealtekR1000

can't determine immediate dependencies for extension com.apple.driver.AppleRTL8169Ethernet

couldn't alloc com.psystar.driver.RealtekR1000

couldn't alloc com.apple.driver.AppleRTL8169Ethernet

Without assuming ANYTHING, I'm not missing a step am I? Because I can't seem to get Leopard to boot.

Sumrall:

Some points I see in your installation:

1. Check your BIOS, you can download a profile from Wolfienuke's post. Your AHCI must be activated.

2. Plug your hard disk in one of the 6 SATA ports (i think they are white), it´s about AHCI (see screenshot above).

3. Make sure you edit the .plist file with the UUID of your partition.

4. Errors will be shown, but with easy, ethernet, standby, audio... should work without changes in the script/ketx.

5. I think Wolfienuke's has mach_kernel.voodoo 9.5 but it´s quite easy to change for 9.6

I hope some of these cues will help.

Are not those bios settings for DD's method? I tried it anyway and got some different errors, but no Leopard.

If the EFI partition, wolfeluike has a folder called bootloaders. If you download chameoleon the binary files, they also have a bootloader folders and they are named the same generally. I am wondering if you just swapped those out what would happen?

You gotta have sound. ;)

In System Preferences/Sound/Output tab, do you have the Internal Speakers selected for output? If so, where is your audio plugged in the back on the mobo?

Does the partition unmount when you install via script? Needs to.

Post your boot.plist (did the script make one for you and did you supply one?) and install log.

Well, the actual boot files have the same name, so the bootloader may install. However, the actual commands used to install the boot files are slightly different from the older PC-EFI v9 bootloader. But, it may work anyway.

But, the real issue is that the new Chameleon bootloader uses the "Extra" folder in the root directory for all the other files. So, the location of the kexts, boot.plist, etc. is different.

Won't take too long to change all that.

Use the Chameleon installer on their site. It requires a little more work, but they have step-by-step instructions on what needs to be done.

I just built up a ud5 + 920 with 9800 gtx+ and ddr3 1600, hard drives going in today.

So... I'm about ready to do this.

My question / issue is this. I bought leopard right when it came out so I assume I have 10.5.0 on dvd. Obviously, leopard has come a long way since release.. Should i be concerned about installing such an out of date retail version?

Ideas / comments ?

thanks in advance.

Processor (CPU3, 0x03, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}

There is no alias !!?

Someone can understand my problem or having similar problem ?

Most of us started with the original Leo DVD. But, some of the recents kexts may require 10.5.5 or 10.5.6. So, I would download the combo updater and install that right after 10.5.0. You'll be up-to-date right out of the box with fewer problems.

The alias issue only applies to the ASUS motherboards. The Gigabyte mobos don't have that issue.

I already posted my install log and the two different boot screen errors I'm seeing. Am I supposed to be adding a boot.plist, because the instructions didn't say anything about it. I've literally done nothing more than I described, but I'd like to know what I can do next? I have to be missing something because it seems to be working for other people... :)

Part of the problem is that we aren't able to see the entire boot log. There may have been some things that took place early in the boot process that never got resolved, so the system continues with other tasks and then stalls when it runs out of other things to do.

Download this EFI Mounter, so we can see inside the EFI partition. You must select the proper disk Identifier for the drive and mount it. Then, you should be able to see the contents like any other drive.

The partition should look just like this:

EFI_Partition.gif

Because you mention that the log describes not being able to find the boot.plist, the first thing I want to see is the boot.plist and its contents. Is it visible and can you Quicklook it?

Next, is to make sure each of the kexts in the Extension folder are proper XML files (in human readable form). Open the package of each kext and see if you can Quicklook the info.plist. If you can, then it's okay. If not, then it must have been converted to binary during a Terminal plist write and may create issues with booting.

Let us know if you get this far along.

regards,

MAJ

FYI: I have uploaded the latest boot from EFI kexts that can be used for wolfienuke's script. They can be found here or on the front page.
