Mattrb & DD,

Thanks so much. I do have my Hackintosh up and running using the DD script. I will try the wolfienuke EFI partionioning method tonight. I come from a MAC background so I dont have much experience with PC Bios settings. I am having problems shutting down- computer does not completely shut down and reboots itself instead - unless I turn the power off on the PSU.

Also I cannot boot without the original Kalyway disk in the DVD drive.

Doesn't sound like the bootloader is installed or the BIOS is only looking at the optical drive for booting. Make sure the Hard drive you have the OS installed on is the first HD it sees in Advanced BIOS Features/Hard Disk Boot Priority.

Other than that - I have sound working and ethernet and have installed some APPS.

Do you guys have two keyboards and mice attached at all times? ( without it I cannot input keys to the BIOS) is this always necessary? I just need to know to make room for it.

I use the same keyboard for both. In the BIOS, under Integrated Peripherals, enable USB Keyboard Function and USB Mouse Function.

And what is your shutdown process? Is it straightforward like a typical Mac?

It should be the same, although I haven't shut mine down in months.

I have tried unsucessfully to run the EFI Boot Installer v3 script by Wolfienuke. I have a retail Mac OS X Install DVD on my desktop and I double click the install command.

I pick the disk I want to install on then shortly after it says

" Could not verify EFI Partition

logout

I have the same issue and the only way around it is to open the diskid.txt file (located in script folder) in a text editor (TextEdit is fine) and replace whatever may be there with the Disk ID number of the drive your want to install on. Use Disk Utility, click on your drive, and click on "Info" button. You will see the disk identifier line:

Disk Identifier : disk0

The number after "disk" is the number you use in the text file. In the example shown, it would be "0" without the quotes.

FYI: The above Identifier is only for the drive, not partition. If your OS is installed on a third or fourth partition on that drive, the procedure is still the same, although wolfienuke's script will only name the first partition on the drive, which may not be the name of the partition you have your OS installed on. This may be confusing to some, as wolfienuke's script makes assumptions that there is only one partition the OS is installed on. This does not matter anyway, as the only information that's important to this installer (and rightly so) is that you identify the correct drive; the partition is irrelevant. Why? Because there is only one EFI partition per drive, and all you need to know is what drive that EFI partition needs to be installed on.

How stable will this board run once configured to say your typical Mac Pro?

Stable? I'd say about equal, depending on your needs. The only outstanding issues, AFAIK, are wireless and LAN not working together. I use a Airport basestation connected via Ethernet cable, so that issue is moot.

However, it would be naïve to conclude that getting there would be painless. I only suggest that those looking into a hackintosh be those familiar with the inner workings of their systems and keeping OS X running on such hacks. Terminal experience, although not absolutely necessary, is most certainly helpful and can be a blessing. Those not familiar will have a much more difficult time. All the necessary information is available here on these forums. Read and read, again. Know it like the back of your hand and your experience will be rewarding.

MAJ

MAJ,

Thanks for your help and insight! Those tips are great and I will implement them very soon! It was your script that got my hackintosh going which I am amazed by, but I want to move to the EFI method because it has been recommended so highly. My Hackintosh has been working very well and stable. The keyboard thing and keeping the Kalyway disk in my optical drive are what I really want to fix (as well as the EFI install)

Your help will go a long way to making this happen,

Thank You for your time and insight. People at my job ( I work as a retoucher at several magazines) said I was crazy to even try this.

I think different...

In your example the disk is "disk0" and you say to name it "1" is this just a typo or should I name my disk "3"

sorry for the confusion...

Whoops! Sorry for that typo, I had changed my example and didn't correct it. It should be just the number, nothing else. So, in your case it should be 2.

That should do it.

EDIT: A retoucher, eh? Photoshop? I've been in publishing for some 20 years and do 4-color retouching (since Photoshop 1.01 in System 6!). Actually, it's in RGB, then convert to 4-color process as the last step. Nice to see others with the same experience.

Show 'em it can be done!! :P

1st thing 1st Maj your the best awesome guide and thanks for all the help setting up my system.

EVGA x58 SLI MotherBoard

EVGA 9800 GTX+

6 gig Corcair 1600

Western Digital Black 1TB

Everything working perfectly. I took a USB 500 GIG drive plugged it into my macbook pro ran the script to install the retail ISO, made partition active, post-pactch, pre-patch. Edited the com.apple.boot.plist with UIID of USB drive. Plugged it in to the I7 machine and booted up(keep in mind the 1st boot does take rather long so dont think its stuck just wait) One you have your system booted with the USB drive you can repeat the steps for the internal SATA drive in your I7 machine. People with this motherboard should also use the RED SATA port on the motherboard. Set the BIOS to IDE but in the mode selection use ACHI + IDE mode and ACHI mode receptively.

Other then that I have a i7 MAC which was built for $1100 thats over clocked to 4.0ghz and Ram bus speed aprox 1550.

On thing I am still having trouble with is the audio I have attempted to use many of the kexts found on:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=140941

With no luck. The audio chipset for this motherboard is a ALC889 for sure. windows sees this device:

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0889&SUBSYS_10DE0175&REV_1000\4&39376551&0&0201

Anyone set this audio device to work on EVGA x58 MB?

thanks MAC ON !!!

There are a number of people with working audio on EVGA boards: JaE-V (EDIT: uses USB audio adapter, so doesn't count) and THEHAWKs are just two. I browsed the older "Upcoming Intel X58 Mobos & Core i7 CPUs" thread to find one, as I thought someone had posted a fix.

Hmmm. I'm confused.

With the 2, does the script recognize the proper drive?

If you type in the Terminal: diskutil list

does it show that your drive has a EFI partition?

An example of my drive:

/dev/disk0
  #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
  0: GUID_partition_scheme *596.2 Gi disk0
  1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk0s1
  2: Apple_HFS Doctor_Mac 30.0 Gi	disk0s2
  3: Apple_HFS Time Machine 565.7 Gi disk0s3

Notice partition 1 has the EFI name in the second column, with 200MB allocated to it. The EFI partition will always be partition 1 on a drive. This is what you should have on your drive.

MAJ

MAJ,

I followed your instructions for terminal and this is what I got:

/dev/disk0

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme *232.9 Gi disk0

1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk0s1

2: Apple_HFS MacBook Pro 232.6 Gi disk0s2

/dev/disk1

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme *931.5 Gi disk1

1: EFI 200.0 Mi disk1s1

2: Apple_HFS LEOPARD_WD 931.2 Gi disk1s2

The LEOPARD_WD drive is what I am trying to install on but it keeps failing when I select the drive. It obviously has the EFI partition. I tried saving the disk number in the "diskid.txt" file but that didnt work either :(

I have the disk hooked up via a USB dock to my MacBook pro- does that matter? I was able to use the same set up successfully with your script.

I am having no luck here...

Its like I can see the finish line but cant seem to cross it- frustrating.

Thanks,

UPDATE: Just ran the script SUCCESFULLY!!! :D

will install HD later on today...

My mistake was inputting the number of the drive in the script and not the NAME of the drive! ;)

can't wait to test it! Thanks for all your help MAJ! I really appreciate it.

I can not install Leo 10.5.6

I use to boot the DVD: BOOT-KABYLE-BUMBY.iso or GENERIC.iso you put the leopard and restarts when it starts to read the dvd. I tried with-v but does not stop with error.

I am trying on this computer for the first time.

I have tried several ways to install Hackintoch (kalyway, Boot-132 with Original DVD, iPC ...) and nothing. one way or another on the computer restarts, without letting me see the error.

My computer:

Core i7 2,66

ATI ASUS EAH4570

NEC DVD

Are you using the busratio=20 kernel flag. That's necessary if you are booting from the Voodoo kernel. I don't really know what kernel those ISOs contain, but if it restarts immediately, that'd be my guess.

Additionally, how are you running the Leo installer? Are you trying to run the main installer app that requires you to restart? If so, then that's not going to work. It needs to be the installer located deeper in the DVD, at /System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg

Hakintos and MAJ

this is the same issue I had with my EVGA board and boot-132 method. attempted for 3 week with this method finally just gave up and did the two hard drive method.

might want to try this just to see if it works

kernel=mach_kernel.voodoo boot-uuid=<you retail disk UUID> busratio=20 -v

if that doesn't work its the way boot-132 is handing off to the retail something not working correctly. Try the digital dreamers two HD method works great.

thanks

First of all, thank you all for this tutorial, thank's to you I have now a running hackintosh.

If you are still having problems with boot form EFI partition and Fusion all you have to do is rename your original kernel and make a symlink named mach_kernel to a copy of the voodoo kernel you're using.

Hope this helps.

I mentioned this a month ago and got crickets in this thread. I think this symlink has been tried and does not work with EFI Partition Boot. I am assuming you haven't tried to symlink the kernel because this is your first post. Can anyone corroborate with this hypothesis.

You're correct.

The symlink will make no difference for the EFI boot setup, as the kernel is already named "mach_kernel." This issue only applies to Fusion, not Parallels, because Fusion expects to see the kernel only as "mach_kernel", not "mach_kernel.voodoo".

As for the boot-132 setup (not EFI boot), the reason the kernel is named "mach_kernel.voodoo" is so that it won't be overwritten by a possible software update from Apple. The symlink applies in this case, so that Fusion will continue to work, seeing the "mach_kernel" symlinked to "mach_kernel.voodoo."

Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

Success! Thanks to you guys and this forum. I used Digital Dreamer's script to install OS X (10.5.6) retail (starting from a Kalyway install on my other drive). Worked like a charm.

Relevant hardware:

Gigabyte ED-5 with i7 920 (no overclock yet)

EVGA Nvidia 9800GTX+ 512MB

Extra firewire 800/400 PCI card (runs fine, native)

Rosewill wireless internet PCI card (no worky)

Issues I had:

ISSUE Buggy video, incompatibility noticed in the "cover glide" (or whatever they call it) in iTunes, inability to install Logic due to Quartz being disabled, yadda yadda VIDEO.

FIXED Follow hotshotharry's steps in Post #7 of http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1066755. Find the programs/kexts he used by searching "OSX86 universal installer" "nvinstaller v.52" I actually skipped the other step.

RESULT Hardware accelerated graphics with Quartz Enabled.

ISSUE Esata device doesn't show up when plugged into running OS. I HAVE NOT tried booting with the device plugged in, but HOTSWAP functionality is not present.

ISSUE PS2 keyboard and mouse not working.

ATTEMPTS Using a PS2=>USB adapter works, but I want my PS2, dammit! Tried installing kexts as prescribed in http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;#entry1027896 Post #6, but so far no luck.

ISSUE No wireless internet.

ATTEMPTS Downloaded RAlink driver for the chipset. OS X doesn't see "Airport," RALink software tells me to install the card. Internet works wicked faster in Vista on this card than it does how I have it in OSX right now, streaming over ethernet from my ancient Powerbook G4.

ISSUE This one has me scratching my head. OSX only sees (much less than!) half the space on my internal drives. Even if I format them, my 340GB drives turn up as 128GB drives! In GParted, I see a huge "unallocated" partition, but it is nowhere to be seen in OSX Retail OR Kalyway. I formatted one of the "unallocated" partitions as fat 32, because I know OSX has a problem with GParted's HFS formats, but no dice. Windows sees the space fine, or at least it did, but it's not installed right now.

Edit: FIXED I had to change the ATA setting in my BIOS to AHCI. That's it. I'm an idiot.

Entering this code:rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo busratio=20 -v -f rd=disk[n]s3 be able to read the DVD but the installer does not start.

Help

IMG.jpg

The fact that the AppleSMBIOS - 28 is present shows there are patched kexts in the ISO that are loading. That's good.

But, there are two other issues that send flags:

1.

There is a LegacyAppleAHCIPort that is attempting to load, but doesn't. Likely because it is not a real, but fake kext. This kext does not belong there, so why or how did it end up there is my question. Where did it come from? This is not a showstopper in itself, but it makes me wonder what else is present that shouldn't be or not present that should be.

2.

The other issue is the fact that it is loading the built-in AppleRTL8169Ethernet, which fails, of course. Which leads me to wonder if the RLTR1000.kext is, indeed, present. Is that kext not part of your ISO? The fact that the AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext is present reveals that the standard OS X install is present and readable (off of DVD), so that's good.

rd=disk[n]s3

Is the above what you actually have in the boot.plist? This disk # "n" needs to be that of the DVD without any brackets, whatever that happens to be in your system.

If you can do this, the following would be a more predictable method of getting the DVD to boot from that ISO:

Find the UUID of your DVD using Disk Utility/Info or in Terminal: diskutil info /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD

Then use that UUID in your boot prompt or better yet, your ISO boot.plist so you don't have to keep typing it out at the prompt.

boot-uuid=88888888-4444-4444-4444-CCCCCCCCCCCC

(8-digit#-4-digit#-4-digit#-4-digit#-12-digit#) put this in the kernel flags string with: busratio=20 -v -f

Should look something like this: busratio=20 -v -f boot-uuid=F7D74206-F85B-3F31-92F3-5C4D85E8110E

Is full SATA support showing up in System Profiler/Serial ATA? Does it show the Intel ICH10R AHCI and are your drives connected to this controller?

OK, I found my problem, which was that I had to change the ATA setting in my BIOS to AHCI. Sorry, I'm a COMPLETE noob at this, and that was a noobie mistake, I think. Now OS X SEES the space, but when I try to format it, it still runs up against the limit. I think this is because I set up my GUID partition and installed the OS while the drive was still "128GB," and I'll have to probably reinstall the OS with this new setting before I'll have access to the full drive. Totally weak.

NEW issue: Can't install Vista. Selecting "Boot from CD" it just hangs. Running the Darwin bootloader and booting from the disc just kicks me back to the Darwin prompt that asks to type any boot options (-v or whatever) or press enter. I've got OSX retail on one drive, an itty-bitty partition with Kalyway on the other drive, and the big NTFS partition on the same drive. Does having Kalyway on the drive kill my chance of installing Windows on that drive? I want to keep a loaded copy of Kalyway in case I need to troubleshoot my Retail install, and I haven't been able to get it to boot from an external drive so far.

Edit: OK, here's my new plan. I've deleted Kalyway (whatever, it's a half-hour, painless install for me), and reformatted my other drive as a GUID partition table. I am in the process of using the Disk Utility "restore" function to move my current OSX drive to the other one. Hopefully that will allow my OSX drive to both SEE and USE the entire drive now that I've fixed the BIOS. Assuming I can successfully boot from that drive after the restore and Logic works fine, etc. (running Logic is the whole point of this exercise for me), I will wipe this current drive clean, and format it to NTFS, then cross my fingers and hope Vista installs to the clean drive. In fact, if it doesn't, I'll just go into my computer and physically disconnect the other drive, so it should be just like any native install, right? I'll deal with the dual boot problem when I get there! Worst case scenario, I've got to juggle some SATA plugs until i figure it out, but everything SHOULD work!

Edit again: Booted from Restored drive, and it worked. Working boot, plus I have the whole drive, so there's the fix for anyone having this problem. For the search button's sake:

ISSUE OSX only sees 128 GB of a much larger drive.

FIXED You need your working OSX installed on one drive, and another free drive (that you can erase) in the system.

1) Change BIOS ATA setting to AHCI. OSX will now see your full drive capacity, but your original GUID partitioned (booting) drive will still only be able to use 128GB.

2) Use Disk Utility to create GUID partition map on a NEW drive.

3) Use Disk Utility to "Restore" your old bootable partition to the new GUID partitioned drive.

4) I didn't try selecting the new bootable drive from Preferences, because I doubt my Hackintosh would respond well or at all to anything Preferences tells it to do at boot. Instead, I used the Boot 132 CD and selected the appropriate drive.

It boots fine! Writing from fresh boot right now, with 240GB still available on my drive.

Sounds like you got it figured out. I agree with the 128GB limitation issue - you'll have to start over on that one.

Yeah, don't use System Preferences for selecting boot volumes. Won't work anyway, as the bootloader overrides that. It doesn't hurt anything, but you'll get a system beep when you close the Preferences window signaling that something went wrong and that preference couldn't be saved.

I have Vista installed, too, and found it more troublesome to install than OS X. The only way I could get it installed once the installer was running is by have all other drives unplugged. Otherwise, it refused by saying no volumes meeting its specifications were found. It's a supposed feature from MS to keep people from installing on unmountable volumes. :)

Got Vista installed after clearing out the other drive, no problem!

Hey guys, first of all i'd like to say thanks for an awesome tutorial but I got a small problem. I got a nvidia 9800 GTX+ 512mb and OSX isn't seeing it as a 9800GTX+ - It just says "Graphics by NVIDIA" and Core Image is software and Quartz Extreme is not supported but QuartzGL is supported. Anyone have any idea how to fix it? This is preventing me from using Aperture and other applications. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
