Is there an alternative way to install this without using 2 HDs?

No you can't because you need an GUID (GPT) formatted HD.

But you can have a big USB-Stick (8 GB or more)+ HD if you want

Success here on both EFI and DD script with voodoo 9.6 and 9.5. I actually ended up using both scripts to accomplish a perfect EFI install and swapped out some of the kexts that wolfnukie posted for newer ones that DD posted. Only problem I've seen is Jmicron hanging on boot and sometimes in OS X.

Just a couple things not working.

Audio - Says there is digital out in system preferences, but shouldn't that be SPDIF? I need it for HDMI on my video card. Seems like the audio kexts for this chipset are not all there just yet. Maybe soon this will be perfected.

VMWare or Parallels - both give kernel panics regarding hypervisor or the kext they load to initialize using a core or two. Not really sure what the deal is here. Maybe go back to voodoo 9.5?

Also, i'm having some voltage issue right now on bios F5. Board says there is a moderate over voltage. I think may have something to do with memory. I can enable the XMP profile for my memory and it works fine at 1600MHz 8-8-8-21. If I turn the power switch off on my PSU then the bios complains about the setting and puts me down to 1066MHz. Then I just set it back, it reboots and its fine. Just the yellow light on the top of the motherboard is on telling me there is a moderate over voltage. So I think I need to change something specific instead of using auto settings.

I was hoping to OC this setup as well. Anyone got a bios profile to use on bios F5? Or know what settings I should use to get to at least 3,2GHz with memory at 1600MHz. Thanks!

I posted bios settings for a 3.6 OC a page or two back if you want to check that out.

Thanks! Got it. I'll report back later on that.

I decided to go back to DD script method, mostly because I was getting kernel panics in VMware and stalled boot sequences from Jmicron kexts. So now VMware works just fine with 2 cores.

Hey MAJ,

Just looking into the thread. Looks like there are much more i7 users now - which is a real good thing! Unfortunately, times have been real tough for me, and I have not been able to keep up as much as I wanted to. I am also looking into buying a house, so as soon as that gets going I will not be back up for some time.

I see that you have a working VMWare on your i7. Can you give detailed specifics on your setup so that I can get VMWare working as well (Since we have the same hardware)?

  • Type of Install (EFI/Modified Vanilla)
  • Kernel/Version
  • Added/Modified/Removed kexts
  • Any other modifications that affect system operation.

Thanks for all the work you have done, and good luck to the rest of the new i7 users. I believe we will see some great progress once 10.5.7 is released with native i7 support!

I've had mixed success on my EFI partition. I have an Asus WL-138, I can get it working if IO802 kext is in the EFI extensions but this knocks out the patched IONetwork kext on the EFI and as a result I can't use LAN ports or Time Machine.

At the moment I'm using a powerline LAN connection which works fine. I'd still be interested in fixing it so please keep us updated with your progress.

OK, I am almost 100% now. Not getting too much help on a separate RAID thread but, figuring it out just the same. I am now booting into RAID and all drives appear 100%.

Now, revisiting the WIFI, I decided to not return the HAwking as the driver I hunted down was Leopard and it works. At least it works as well as the last USB radio. I have to boot and after it is up and running, I pull out the USB radio, put it back in, and it finds it. Turn on the USB software and sure enough, it always connects. I wish I didn't have to pull it out and put it back in each time I start my MAc but, less bothersome than I would have thought.

Here is the file I installed: I can't remember the link I found it in, but if you search on it you may find it as a package installer (and uninstaller) for Leopard (10.5).

RT71W-Ralink-Leopard.pkg

  :D:star_smile:

Next Question

All I need to do now is update my BIOS. It appears that I can use Gygas built in Q-Flash bios utility for this. But, I have to point it toward the updated Bios file which I will get from a Giga site.

This setup looks for floppies and the Q-Flash seems in particular to be setup to look for floppies. Has anyone else done this with a windows boot CD and/or could I do this Q-Flash with a CD or a USB stick? Do I really have to go and buy a floppy drive just for this purpose? And who do I have to bribe to get the BIOS file burned on a floppy anyway in the first place?

Thanks

Hey, wolf!

Good to hear from you! Sorry things are rough going for you. It's getting tougher everywhere. One of my credit card's info was stolen and someone ran up a huge tab. Thankfully, the bank caught it and closed the account. My hours have been cut at work and can't pay my bills. Layoff rumors abound. And, I have only been at that place for 2 years, so what do you thinkg that means? But, on the plus side, I do a lot of work none of the others (who have been there 25 years or so) are capable of doing, so hope that goes in my favor. I really don't think things are going to get better. Signs of the times.

Oh, computers....I knew there was a reason I was here. :P

I can't get VMware to run again on the boot from EFI setup. Wish I knew what happened. :( I played with so many different setups and gave up trying. It runs on the Boot-132 side, however. Of course, I don't know why that is, either. The kexts on the front page are the ones I'm currently using. Both installs use Andy's modified Voodoo-based kernel. What can I say that might be helpful? I'm running the official F5 BIOS and can't overclock pass 3.2GHz to save my life. Barely get's past POST and will just KP right when the bootloader is loading the kernel. Disappointing.

Speaking of which, I think there's a issue with OS X reading some kexts in binary form during boot. Haven't confirmed it, but need to test it out. I just know that when I had a fresh EFI install with all the kexts untouched and in XML format, it works. But, modify it with Terminal, which converts it to binary, I get "can't read plist" errors during a failed boot. Don't know which one, yet.

In my scripts, I've had to use "plutil -convert xml1 plist/path/here" to keep things in human readable XML format.

I'm writing the boot.plist portion of my script and have been pouring over this thread, OSX Flags List for Darwin Bootloader & kernel level.

Under the Kernel level flags used for hacked kernels ONLY heading, I just notice this:

-vmware = Force vmware support, with hacked kernels. Needs testing.

Has anyone tried this? Isn't Voodoo a "hacked" kernel?

As for the upcoming 10.5.7 kernel, will that kernel still need to be installed on the EFI partition to kick things off?

Anyhow, best of wishes.

MAJ

I still get stalled boots when the Jmicron kexts are loading using DD's method just to let you know. Not often, but occasionally.

What steps did you take?

Yup, update bios from a usb key is very easy.

I can't get VMware to run again on the boot from EFI setup. Wish I knew what happened. :D I played with so many different setups and gave up trying. It runs on the Boot-132 side, however. Of course, I don't know why that is, either. The kexts on the front page are the ones I'm currently using. Both installs use Andy's modified Voodoo-based kernel. What can I say that might be helpful? Me too. I could only get VMware to work with your script 132 install. But it works, so I don't care too much about the EFI unless of course 10.5.7 makes things stop working for whatever reason. I'm running F5 as well and I used the settings that were posted by L3B3R to reach a stable 3.66Ghz. Although, my memory appears to be clocked slightly slower than the XMP profile that was set 1544Mhz instead of 1600Mhz.

I have a stable overclock at 3.67ghz on f5. That was my target clock rate; I did not want anything higher. I ran prime95 for one hour. I don't think that I will ever put my computer to more extensive stresses, so I stopped at one hour. The temp was an average of 90 degrees Celsius and never went over 92 degrees Celsius. My system does not have the most cooling capabilities so I think that those temps are not bad for my mediocre set-up. A better cooler would make a difference. Here is the bios setup:

CPU Clock Ratio: 19x

Turbo Boost: Disabled

QPI Link Speed: x36

Uncore Frequency: x16

BCLK Frequency: 193

Performance Enhance: Standard

System Memory Multiplier: 8.0

CPU Vcore: 1.38750v

QPI/VTT voltage: 1.255v

IOH core: 1.240v

Dram voltage: 1.640V

Prime95 testing on Windows Vista

Above picture snapped at exactly 1hr. of testing.

Yes voodoo is hacked. I've always read mach_kernel.voodoo just needs to be renamed to mach_kernel for VMware. It works on your script 132 install, no idea why it doesn't with EFI methods when it is plainly named mach_kernel from the start and no linking. I would assume that flag lets you have the kernel named whatever you want.

Can you say more about this? I need to know what WIndows versions will do this, from the quote below it appears that not all WIndows systems will allow me to create a boot disk.

From: http://tw.giga-byte.com/FileList/WebPage/m...ashbios_dos.pdf

Section One: Making a Boot Disk.

To update BIOS in DOS, you must prepare a boot disk. The following steps guide you how to make a boot disk in Windows 98. Please note that Windows 2000/XP does not allow you to make a boot disk (however, if a DOS boot disk can be made if you install XP with SP1) If you cannot get a boot disk, you can use @BIOS or Qflash to update BIOS.

I found a couple pages that speak to the BIOS flashing process. It says there are three ways to do this.

From: <http://tw.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/HowToReflashBIOS.aspx>

Three BIOS Flash Utilities...

We provide three BIOS flash utilities at our website. Below are the overviews.

1 : A BIOS flash utility embedded in Flash ROM. Not all motherboards have the Q-Flash?, please use @BIOS? or DOS flash utility to update BIOS if your motherboard does not have Q-Flash?.

Features-- With this utility, you only have to stay in the BIOS menu when you want to update BIOS. No need to enter DOS or O.S. mode.

Caution-- Make sure you have a functional floppy disk with the correct BIOS version for your motherboard.

2 : A Windows-based BIOS live update utility.

Features-- @BIOS? helps you search for, download, and then update the latest BIOS in Windows operating system.

Caution-- Make sure your O.S. environment is stable.

3 : DOS Flash utility

Features-- The flash utility is a combination of AMI and AWARD BIOS flash utility. You can use it with both AMI and AWARD BIOS.

Caution-- Make sure you have a functional DOS boot disk with the correct BIOS version for your motherboard.

I am assuming you are talking about the third way here? I was thinking that if floppy drives are really cheap I could get one and if I Could get the exe file put on a floppy then the boards Q-FLash utility would do this too (First way).

A friends friend says he will dig out an older copy of windows for me to borrow, should be able to boot from it. I have no Windows programs anywhere, pretty die hard MAc guy here.

ADDED: It would be so very easy if the first way, Q-Flashing the BIOS, didn't have to look for a floppy. Instead I could put the file on a USB thumb drive or burn it to a CD. Is there any chance this is true? The bios flashing guide that I Linked to above uses the term floppy in the Q-flash utility. But could I point to a CD with the flash file just the same? Anyone know for sure? Experimenting with Bios flashing could brick my board.

Looking again at the third way it appears to use DOS. I would love to avoid learning DOS.

Bios update with Gigabyte board is very easy:

1) Format a partition (of a HD or USB Card) to FAT32.

2) Put the new firmware on it

3) The flash bios program will detect this partition and the firmware file.

Sound little problem (using Wolfienuke method):

I notice an error on line 2742 with the AppleHDA.

I found this http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofiversi...129058-100.html to solve the problem (see last post) but the link doesn't work any more.

It is a small problem because -digital- sound works.

Update: I found this http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=140941

Problem with Fusion

I also noticed that it may be the reason why VMWare Fusion crashes (!?!?)

I also noticed it may be the video driver (nvidia 9800GTX+ NVKush.kext)

I disabled the sound and the video acceleration but without success

I would like to thanks digital_dreamer + WOLFIENUKE for your works.

You are :(

It means you have to tighten those bootstraps and find ways to save money, use the rule of thumb, use it or lose it.

Use it (the i7):

1:Make music with Logic Pro (use the bay to get it)

2:Use Photoshop to make photos for companies

3:Use Final Cut Pro to make productions

Lose it:

1:Sell the i7 and get a $150 dell off of ebay and hackintoshize it.

2:Downgrade to the dual core processors and get another motherboard, pocket cash.

My Motherboard is the model EX58-UD3R

my RealtekR1000.kext is labeled RED what is means "Nor working" I having problems with my sound card every time I delete the above kext and restart I have a panic event. Really apreciate any help.

Is it 132, efi, or the regular method. I am assuming regular?

LOL!

I already do motherboard repairs on laptops on the side and other repairs. Plus, I've spent that last year or so cutting expenses down to the bare minimum. No cable, just internet, electric, cell, and a place to sleep.

The only reason the kexts are colored is to help identify them in the Extensions folder.

Why are you deleting the RealtekR1000.kext?

Can you say more please? I can use the built in Q-Flash in BIOS so I don't need to boot from Windows. THe EXE file is compressed and needs decompression - I have a roommate with a very slow windows box that should at least decompress it for me.

Sorry for the really dumb question but, can I use disk utility to make a new disk partition, make it FAT32, put the unzipped EXE file on it, and then run Q-Flash and that will see the file on the FAT32 partition? I am understanding you correctly there, yes?

If true then I can uncompress the EXE file on the roommates PC, burn it on his CD drive, load that on my i7 Mac, and put it on the (temporary) FAT32 partition. THen, I run QFlash and it will see it, am I right?

The instructions said I was to use a floppy drive but you are saying that isn't true? Yes? Great news then. I guess I wont have to go and get a copy of windows then. Maybe someday but it is not a priority just now.

Thanks.

Creating a new FAT32 partition should work. The BIOS will look at any root level device with a FAT32 partition and see your file. Don't bother with the CD or floppy; they're a PITA.

:) Thanks for saying you love me, it's been very hard finding that lately. Getting lots of pressure and out right harassment at work for whistle blowing on some major safety violations. In a shaky economy it seems clear I am seeing a case built for justification of my exiting soon. Any way, really hope I am not being argumentative or further off topic to reply thusly but,

Isn't this thread about i7 Hackintosh with the GA X58 MOBO? That is what I am doing here after all. Seems learning to upgrade the BIOS would be a part of that process? That was what I was asking is all. My rig wont see but 4 gigs of the 6 gigs installed and that is because (learned on this forum) I still have the GA F2 Bios and I need to go to the F5 Bios to make this MOBO fully functional yet.

How to do that, and having no WIndows or computer building background, and knowing that unlike everything else I have done where any missteps just went back to wiping a drive and starting over yet again, this could actually "Brick" (permanently ruin) a rather expensive MOBO. So yes, I ask thoroughly on this point before "trying" as the cost of failing (a brick) is too high for me not to be more certain of what I am about to do before I start.

I am not clear how that would be off topic? :censored2:

Much thanks. I can't make a fat32 partition without destroying my new RAID set up. Durn. But at least I know how to proceed now. Mucho appreciation.

Doh! your are distributing the correct and latest kext with your X58_Mobo_Boot-132_Installer but it is not the case with wolfienuke's file (EFI Boot Installer v3).

With the old driver the log file receive 3x times per second this error:

18.03.09 16:42:40 kernel Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in "/SourceCache/AppleHDA/AppleHDA-162.1.37/AppleHDA/AppleHDADriver.cpp" at line 2742 goto handler

( my log viewer is just saying: 3744 of 4000 logs entries have this error!)

It is just annoying (because as you and I said it: it works)

So for people reading this via google

If you have an error 2742 follow the link previously given.

Thanks for your answer

(PS:right now I don't want to copy all your "Kext package" in Extensions but if you say I have to do it I will do it)

This is my log file:

kernel HDAEnabler: Copyright © 2008 by Kabyl

kernel HDAEnabler: 05/05/2008 Added SPAudio support:Taruga

kernel extension "com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily" cannot be found

kernel can't determine immediate dependencies for extension com.apple.driver.AppleHDA

kernel Can't determine dependencies for com.apple.driver.AppleHDA.

kernel Couldn't alloc class "AppleHDACodecGeneric"

You can't use the all the same kexts. They must be the Legacy versions. The boot from EFI setup creates a special case for audio dependencies, as there are several kexts/files that need to be in the same directory. So, some fake plists are made to solve that issue:

• LegacyHDAController.kext

• LegacyHDAPlatformDriver.kext

• HDAEnabler.kext

You can get them from the same site mentioned previously.

Doh! your are distributing the correct and latest kext with your X58_Mobo_Boot-132_Installer but it is not the case with wolfienuke's file (EFI Boot Installer v3).

<snip>

LOL! Yep, I remember those errors. Opening console would beachball for a few seconds. Annoying is the word.

Maybe I should make up a download for these Boot from EFI kexts in the guide, as I don't think wolfienuke is going to have them updated. It'll save others some trouble.

Zoro, I love ya, but for Christ's sake this is geting WAAAAAAAAY off topic. "Welcome to the Genius Bar. Here's how this forum works... 2. This is not the forum for asking questions." Let alone questions that are not even related to hackintosh let alone the i7 or UD5.

Yes, you're right about the above. You could even TRY DOING IT in less time than it takes to type in your question.

QFT! (emphasis added)

Or, try reading the myriads of other posts in various threads like we have done to get these answers. These questions regarding issues that are addressed in other threads adds clutter to this guide and increases the noise to signal ratio. Many reading this guide will be forced to scroll past the 'noise' to get to something related to running OS X on the X58 mobos, making their experience less enjoyable.

regards,

MAJ
