jcafaro10
I was really close to getting OS X Leopard installed! I've been banging my head at this for awhile. I was using ATKOS 5i DVD: Leopard 10.5.5 Build 9F33 OSX86 installer DVD for Intel CPU X86 computers. I downloaded it and burned it to a DVD. I booted to the DVD and I was able to find my partition. I'm using an external USB hard drive. I formatted it with Disk Utility to Master Boot. I was then able to install OS X on it no problem. Then I restarted and tried to boot to the hard drive. I got the grey apple logo screen and then it went away and a blue screen with pointer came up for a split second and then it just shut off. Keeps doing that. Should I try a different version? I have a Inspiron 1420. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149378-almost-got-it-workingbut-no/ Share on other sites
ForestGuardian
Is this a laptop or a desktop/tower? It sounds like you have a problem with powermanagement. The next time you boot up on Leopard, press: //** this is a comment. don't copy this F8 //** before the boot prompt or right when the list of available drives / partitions shows up -v //** flags "verbose" mode to print a boot log on your screen. the last visible lines may help to determine the cause of your problem Take a picture of it, if you can, and post it, so we can read the last part of the log; or just type out the last 4-5 lines. Also keep an eye out in the log for IOPCI and/or ACPI. You may need to choose different patched versions of those kexts. Otherwise, it might be a problem with your video card. We need more hardware details in order to troubleshoot. Please post your exact specs in your signature or at the top of your post. jcafaro10
I'll try and boot into it later but for now here are my specs: Inspiron 1420 Core 2 Duo T7300 Mobile Intel 965 Chipset w/ integrated video card. 2GB Ram, trying to boot from Western Digital Passport USB Hard Drive Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/149378-almost-got-it-workingbut-no/#findComment-1057096 Share on other sites
jcafaro10
Ok, I tried again. Different results. I wasn't able to get a picture b/c I don't have a camera but I booted to my USB Hard-drive but my CD-rom drive was spinning up a lot. I pressed F8 and did -v. Here are some of the messages that I remember seeing (as best as I could remember) kextd[47] - can't add repository kextd[47] root file system is read-only; skipping kernel link data generation Directory Service - launched version 5.0 diskarbitrationd: unable to mount /something/disk0s1 diskarbitrationd: Core raid server not responding diskarbitrationd: unable to mount /something/disk2s1 But then the rainbox wheel popped up and the installer screen came up again. It's as if it gave up reading my hard drive and just decided to go back to the cd-rom drive. jcafaro10
Any clues? Should I try installing again? Is there a better image I should be using? ForestGuardian
It does sound like it won't boot from your USB hard drive, and perhaps it can't even mount the partition created on that drive. One option is to install a bootloader that will let you choose from which drive to boot at startup, and that will flag all necessary partitions active so the system files actually load. Third-party bootloaders are normally used when dual-booting, but it might help you in this case since you're using an external drive. You might also want to reinstall (doesn't really matter what Leopard build you use) and select a fix for USB Mass Storage, or find some way to install it on the current non-booting system that's already there -- likely through Terminal commands.
