I have an ibook that is 4 to 5 years old i guess. I bought it on ebay. It has been running great. the kids use it for the net and itunes. I found it left on last night I opened the lid and all was fine. I shut it down the correct way with no problems. When my son went to start it today it will go to the gray screen with the apple and sunburst below it. The sunburst keeps going around and that is as far as it goes. I am new to mac's. I have always had pc's. Can someone direct me in the right direction or is it a loss. Is their something I can download to check it or repair a file that may be damaged. It is a g3 and i beleave it has tiger.

Thanks seesaw

If the gray screen looks like this:

osx_kernel_panic.jpg

It either means your OS is corrupt or some sectors on your hard drive have gone bad.

You will also find that if you take it to an Apple shop most of the guys will be willing to help you(free of charge) just to check whats wrong. Sometimes doing a complete reset of the PRAM(BIOS) by using:

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

Solves most issues, and you don't lose anything, it's like resetting the BIOS

You could also hold down "CMD + V" keys before you hear the startup sound, this will take you into verbose mode, it should shows you what is causing the error!
