Hi,

After trying the beta image from daemoo and getting a ultra-lagging experience with this OS I decided to wait for the official launch of OSx86. When it happened I didn't have the time (and broadband connection) so just now I tried to do it again.

So, I got a pre-patched dvd from torrents (10.4.4 as mentioned in the topic) and installed it via vmware guided by a post here in the forum (can't find the link here, search for it).

Unfortunately I had to "destroy" my windows partition for it to accept my other partition for OSX format (now I have an empty partition for windows, if somebody could tell me why disk utility in OSX kept saying that it couldn't edit the partition table when I tried to formate the empty partition I would very much appreciate it)

After installation, which, by the way, was pretty fast (less then an our), I got my system running natively with following support:

USBs,

Bluetooth,

firewire,

ethernet

Things with issues: (if you could help me with any of those...)

- SOund!! i use a realtek ac97 based integrated sound card and I couldn+t get sound. It had sound during vmware booting though.

- DVD-RW!!! didn't expect to have a undetected dvd player...

- wifi!! yah, i need it but I going to try ralinks drivers (RT2500) for osx

- card reader!! well, this one is strange: when i plug a card to the reader it detects it and displays and icon on the taskbar with the correct name of the controller "ricoh2controller" but I don't get an icon on desktop...

- ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. I only have 1024x768 in a 1280x800 screen...

Well, I still have a long path to go before I can fully migrate but at least it is not lagging and I would say it is pretty fast. (only boot time takes longer then my xp installation)

Hope that this can help other turion and ATI-chipset based laptop users.

This was just the post I was looking for, I have the exact same laptop. I tried the Vmware method following the instructions from posts here but I ran into several troubles from formating the partition to be recognized by OSX to booting errors. What settings did you use for VMware? Did you use the entire disk or just a partition? If it isn't much trouble I'd like to know exactly how you did it particularly how you formated the OSX partition in order for it to be recognized. Did you also fix the ATI ATA extensions? Why 10.4.4 and not 10.4.5? If I recall, most working wifi drivers are on the 10.4.5 version, don't know if the RAlink chipset is included though. Keep us up to date if you get the Ralink wireless working!

Hi there,

I downloaded 10.4.4 (about a month ago) because I read that 10.4.5 is more picky about hardware... and since I read so many positive replies on .4 I installed it... but I should have done my homework because in fact I noticed that most problably I wouldn't have many of these problems if I had downloaded 10.4.5 straight away.

On the installation, I followed this guide and yes, I also couldn+t installed in my free partition in the beginning because of something regarding partition table... what I did was, VM using the hole drive as HDD, then in disk utility I would format first my C: (windows) then the partition to where I wanted to install Macos in the beginning. I had to do this because If I tried to formate MacOS partition the same partition table error would appear.

So now I had 2 HFS+ (or whatever it is called) partitions: 1 and 2. I used the second (i'm saving the first one to install windows again)

I didn't have to fix anything. Just used the iso (patched DVD) directly with deamon tools.

Do you think I could upgrade to 10.4.5 via network?

I''ve got no experience doing an upgrade of .5 from 10.4.4. Fingers crossed, we might have wifi working straight from a 10.4.5 install. Just to clarify, inside VMware you used the Mac Install Disk Utility to format the entire drive(including the xp drive on which VMware was installed) to apple partitions? Didn't think that was possible! I didn't know VMware could still run even if the drive was formatted?!?

Sound is actually dependent on the SB400 chipset. Still currently under development in a separate forum topic. You may want to keep watch on that because it seems that there's been some good progress.

Also do a search on the x200 ATI ATA fix. It may speed up your system even more! I'm also hoping the x200 can benefit from Omni's upcoming ATI driver.

Got OSX up and running on a S260 (the Centrino Version of S270) without any problems. There is only no driver for the 2200BG wireless controller available yet.

Perhaps we will see one in the future.

Had some Problems with my partitions too but I could fix it with Partition Magic, so i did not loose any Data.

And now WinXP and OSX are dual booting like a charm.

Love it.

The s260 is the centrino version of the s270 meaning that you won't encounter the same install problems of the x200 chipset. You could probably boot natively without any hitches. I'm assuming you've got sound working also. Being a centrino powered laptop, however, it uses an intel wireless card which is currently unsupported. The s270 more commonly uses the Ralink wifi card which some have reported to work.

HAL 9000, when I choose (on VMware) to use the entire drive (including its partitions) as HDD for the vmachine, I then could see in Mac OS disk utility all 3 partitions: C:, Mac-blank-partition and D:. I tried to ERASE Mac-blank-partition but it didn't let me do it before I ERASE C:. So in the end I ended up with a intect D: which still have my documents and with 2 HFS+ partitions: old-C: and Mac-blank-partition. I downloaded the update from apple site. I'm planning to update it by using single user mode using maxxuss guide since I don't have a 10.4.3 option.

I though this patched dvd already contained all fixes I would want, but thanks, I'll give the ATA ATA fix a try :(

I tried a direct install of a Ralink's beta drive but no success... I'll need to study closer... but don't have that much time...

Also, it is getting quite confuse!! I kept reading various different posts regarding the SSE3 issue (it does not appear i my system info): I installed with a pre-patched iso from Myz, do I need to unpatch the SSE3 part? since I have a SSE3 and NX enabled CPU?

NEWS! After applying a couple of fixs in hope to get widescreen, SB400 and wireless working none of it worked BUT my DVDRW is working now!

Also, after the ATI ATA fix I really got a much faster startup and overall performance..

well, luck didn't helped me much... i'm posting via knoppix... I'm wasted my installation because it halted for (what I considered) too long in the 11% of Optimizing procedure, during the update...

Now, I don't even have winxp to run vmware again... it will take hours again... I have the 10.4.4 DVD *patched... do you really think I can't boot DVD direectly?

So, the reinstallation took 105 minutes and that's including resinstallation of winxp and necessary apps for the macosx installation. this time I installed macos ON winxp partition during vmware (amazing things you can still do after your disk has been wiped out!)

Also, I used the fixs one at the time this time and so I can say that I got my DVD working after installing the ATI PATA fix.

Also, how dumb of me! this time I took a closer look to the installation option on OSX and noticed that in fact I have 10.4.5 ISO, even though it was not mentioned in the DVD iso! (from Myz, by the way).

Now, the anoying part! after I installed PATA fix, I reboot, I install office and firefox and shutdown. This morning I'm trying to boot it to work and I get the infamous

"STILL WAITING FOR ROOT DEVICE"

DAMN! I tried rd=disk0s1 -v, -v (as I've allways booted) and could only get it working with -x -v.... But this is not an option since it is safe mode... what do you think could be "damaging" the boot?

I booted using -f (not sure it does though).

PCMCIA (the card-reader, i mean) as always gets detected but not working. A way around this is using bluetooth (that works out of the box with my k750i and syncs marvelously!) or a spare USB multi-cardreader I have.

Are there any reasons for me to try 10.4.6? I already have it and am going to download the necessary apps for the upgarde...

  • 2 weeks later...

well, I was wrong all this time... my wireless card is not a Ralink one... it is in fact INPROCOMM (which I though used Ralink's chipset) IPN2220 chipset based...

I was lead to this idea because MP54G2 and G4 (MSI miniPCI wifi adapters) both use Ralink's chipset... I couldn't guess they decided to switch in the G3...

Now I'm confused. I rechecked my s270 and verified that I have a Ralink chipset as registered in Windows System Manager. I've also looked under the hood. The wifi card is just underneath the touchpad and Ralink is printed on it. The best way for you to check is to open it up as well. It's also possible that MSI used more than one type of wifi card for the s270 line. I've yet to boot OSX on this system so don't know if the wireless will work for me.

well, my window drivers says InProComm IPN2220 since the beginning... it was I who thought it was a Ralink chipset... also, when I installed vista, the default drivers said: MP54G3, and it is probable that different S270 use different miniPCI adapters... I know at least 3, MP54G2, G3 and G4... 2 and 4 uses Ralink chipsets...

I finally took the plunge and installed OSX on my s270. I used the VMware method and I now have a dual booting system, 10.4.5 with ATI patch. I also managed to get wifi running using the Ralink drivers posted in the forums here and now I'm presently posting off of this system. As expected, sound isn't working and I'm still fixed at the 1024x768 resolution. I'm probably going to try omni's Callisto driver once it moves into beta. Initial impression, still boots slower and it isn't as snappy as my Inspiron 5100 setup but at least it's working. I'm hoping I can manage a few tweaks in the near future to speed this up even more. Anyone else with this model?
