I have updated, and it caused my system to reboot, twice. I took out my EFI string for the graphics card, and it booted. I redid the string, rebooted and it came back fine. Only problem I have now is that my ethernet is constantly getting a self assigned (169) ip address. And yes, I have disabled all adapters, delted the relevant pref files, rebooted then re-enabled the adapters without any luck. Airport works fine, ethernet is a no go. Knew I should have waited...oh well.

Since 10.5.7 is out now, has anyone dared an update yet?

I have the combo installer on my disk now but don’t feel like potentially breaking working system. :P

ok.. I did the system update.

FYI.. I'm also running Chameleon 2 RC1... it helps.

My system is on disk0 partition2, so at the "boot:" prompt I did:

hd(0,2)/mach_kernel busratio=20 -v -f

(This is the new kernel installed by the update)

At first, it ran and kernel panicked. After looking closely at the kernel panic, it was crapping out at superhai's VoodooPower kext.

Simply removing that kext from /System/Library/Extensions, then clearing extension cache and rebooting.

Type in the same text at the boot: prompt, and everything came up perfectly. Running on 100% vanilla kernel.

I now need to remove the seatbelt kext.

Just tested sleep mode... Sound works 100%.

USB hotplug works now too. Excellent!

Next thing... I have 1066 DDR3... system still says it's 667 DDR2 memory with a 533mhz FSB

Any hints for that last hurdle (I'm currently reading this long long long thread for an answer)?

I didn't do the combo installer. I installed directly from the Software Update tool.

Works great.

FYI.. to all those who want to run VMware Fusion..

I'm running it 100% with this new kernel...

I also updated to the latest 2.0.4 version from 2.0.1 (so both worked).

I have XP and Linux running in different VMs at one time....

I have 4 processors assigned to linux, and 2 to windows.

Done the update as well. Update hang at 97%, had to force quit the updater and reboot the system. Did that from the same EFI as the previous system, meaning with all kexts to run 10.5.6.

System rebooted twice, as it usually does on updating on my Macs, then went into Finder just fine.

First impressions...

What now works:

- USB shows no problems

A few problems are occuring now, I'll look into these:

- Sound is gone entirely (no devices are detected in Sys Prefs, although Sys Profiler mentions two Intel devices)

- FireWire is still missing on front port

- System Profiler reports an error in main hardware info /"There was an error while gathering this information."/

- Memory still only defined as "1333MHz RAM"

- CPU still unknown

According to Netkas, ICH10 should be supported now (except for icons).

Also, my video works nicely, but I'm not certain if it's because of the new system, or because I've installed the 4870 drivers before. > Can anyone shed light on the question whether these drivers are removed / renewed on update?

I'll be trying to run the system with as few external kexts as possible, to be able to see what we need :)

Happy modding everyone!

And welcome to the Vanilla age! :D

My bus and memory speed are a third of what they should be (1850 DDR3 reporting as 667 DDR2). Is this just a reporting problem, or is my system actually running at a comprimised bus speed?

Try installing Chameleon v2.

As for the sound, I had to re-install the AppleHDA.kext file mentioned at the beginning of this thread.

I figured it was because of some update that Apple did as part of the update.

I haven't tried the firewire. I'll check that out.

If you installed a smbios update, it might be what's causing this. My system, which hasn't been modified in that category, natively just says it's 1333MHz memory, without even specifying type. Of course, I might be mistaken... But does it say so in every memory reading app?

Except for the pretty pictures ( :D ) and the obvious differences with EFIv6, what will that accomplish? (not trying to be a smartypants, just curious)

I also noted my ethernet is down as well, just like for Jamie. Weird thing is, the AppleYukon and -Yukon2 kexts are loaded (or at least - should be) from the EFI partition. To be honest though, I don't see them actually *being* loaded, so that might be a part of the problem. Weird thing is: after the first two restarts, it still worked, but since the power's been off of the system, it doesn't...?

As for AppleHDA, it is very probable indeed that the installer reinstalled it's own file, although it's older and has a lower version number.

And the problem with the front FW port has been present since I started working with this system (speaking of the physical system, my computer that is). I don't believe I tried using it in other OS's, might just be the port itself. Although it's quite eery it does provide power, but not data connection... ;)

Anyway, as I'm short on time now (of all moments, bleh..), I won't be able to do a lot. I'll be gone this weekend as well, so no tweaking for me. Good luck everyone, and keep us posted about your achievements here!

edit: ps, forgot to mention:

- sleep works as it did under 10.5.6, meaning the system wakes up, but my graphics are all garbled; this is very likely to be a sheer ATI HD4xxx series problem

- shut down works like a charm; it did already before, when the external sound kexts were not installed properly, which is the case for now..

Yes, I think an smbios came with chameleon, or possibly from elsewhere along the process. Geekbench, system profiler, and terminal all report bus at 600.

I'm only concerned if it affects system performance.

I'd say: run some benchmarks, you'll probably be amazed  I wouldn't worry too much, my guess is it's just aesthetics. (as far as I know: OS X doesn't actively change frequencies, and you probably have the BIOS set up quite nicely)

Update:

Fixed both sound and network. Simple to do, as the problem consists just in replacing the correct kexts, which were 'cleaned' by the update.

Reinstall both AppleHDA/AppleAzaleaAudio (remember, just use one of the two!) and AppleYukon2 (either directly in the Extensions, of in a subfolder of IONetworkingFamily).

In other words: system runs just fine again :)

One question to everybody though:

I've been running some benches. Up to now, the results for the Voodoo (9.5.0) Kernel have been astoundingly higher than the Vanilla kernels... Did anyone else notice this? Any explanations?

Greets,

My system is on disk0 partition2, so at the "boot:" prompt I did:

hd(0,2)/mach_kernel busratio=20 -v -f

trakkasure - thanks for your code at the boot promt. Saved me from the usual frustration last night.

I updated from 10.5 to 10.5.7 via the combo last night and used your prompt to successfully boot with the vanilla kernel. I had to reboot a few times as it did hang with a kernel panic, but overall it runs fine now.

There is one thing though. After seeing the loading commands my screen turns completely blue and takes about 4 minutes until I can get to my desktop. My total boot up time from when I enter the darwin code and hit "y" is 5:50. I don't have EFI working yet - need to try a few more times - and I don't have all cores enabled. Any ideas why such a long load time? The only thing I can think of is maybe having the old voodoo kernel in my System folder or something with my wireless internet...

I am glad to report USB works correctly, my Encore b/g/n PCI Wifi works great, and Graphics card via nvinject. I will give the sound and lan a go sometime tonight after work.

What kexts are you guys running from EFI for the 10.5.7 install? I am looking to get the bare minimum working in order to complete the EFI so that I can use all the performance of these core i7's.

I haven't benchmarked yet since I'm still working on EFI, but I hope the vanilla is as fast as the voodoo kernel. Maybe someone can shed some light on that subject - by also benchmarking a before and after install of 10.5.7. I'm still a noob booting from a boot disc at this point...

Thanks for everyones contributions here - gave me confidence to run the update.

First off.. you need to get EFI installed so that you can enable all of the cores (that's your main problem).

Install with your gfx strings/kexts sound, dsmos, and System kext files. (is that still needed?)

From what I am reading, smbios is no longer needed. The EFI_pack.zip file should have all of that (except gfx stuff)

Then enable your cores. You'll notice a drastic performance improvement.

Hello all.

First and foremost, amazing job everyone! I am new to this community and am really looking forward to a MAC OSX Install :)

I have been working with this for a few hours, getting further and further, however I appear to be at a standstill.

I am falling this guide explicitly using the Vanilla install and the attachments.

Hardware:

Asus Rampage Extreme

Core 7 920 D0

6gb DDR3

LG DVD Multidrive

WD 1tb BLACK (install)

I am reaching a point where it is in the process of loading up all the EFI strings and other componets for the MAC install I believe, and then I recieve a kernel panic stating... The UUID of the kernel (/mach kernel) does not match the UUID of the disk. I then get the horrific debug report and am unable to carry on.

Any help will be MUCH appreciated. Thank you all very much!

To be honest, I've even downsized to less now :) as the Vanilla kernel now is a go, we can also use the vanilla system.kext, so I've removed that.

Right now, all I've still got in my Extensions folder are: AppleSMBIOS.kext, AppleSMBIOSEFI.kext, IntelCPUPMDisabler.kext, LegacyIOAHCIBlockStorage.kext, dsmos.kext.

The legacy AHCI kext is not actually needed, just for aesthetics (turns the orange icons of the internal drives into normal harddrive icons). Also - I must admit I'm not sure we need the other ones, but I'm not very burning to try... :)

And to respond to your comment: I already did the benchmarks under 10.5.6, just as I did with 10.5.7; all three running vanilla kernels (9.6.3, pre9.7.0, 9.7.0) are approximately equal, in both system versions, while the voodoo beats them (heavily, up to 30% sometimes!) in both systems.

Case still not solved...

Using the AppleHDA.kext that's been posted in M J's opening post to this thread, had no problems as of yet.

I'm sorry to say I'm not sure what you mean, as I can't follow the link either :S

First of all: welcome to the wondrous world of Hackintoshing :)

Could you perhaps specify for us at which point of the installation (according to MJ's guide) this happens? Is this before even installing the Retail, or already when booting your harddrive?

You'll have to excuse me if my analysis is wrong right now - it's past 3AM, and I'm quite tired... In any case, my first thought is: have you turned off all cores (single core, no hyperthreading)? And are you running on the voodoo kernel - with the busratio=20 flag of course..?

Good luck,

I have upgraded to 10.5.7.

Installation was ok, but after restarting the graphics were messed up (screen remained light-gray after the initial boot up but a mouse curser scattered all across the screen was shown).

I was able to boot correctly with the -x option. I then tried to repair networking and sound (editing AppleYukon2.kext/Contents/Info.plist and installing provided AppleHDA.kext - woth worked nicely on 10.5.6), but after rebooting nothing happens. I tried to see whats the problem with -v -f -x and after it finds the boot device (disk2s2 via uuid) nothing is done at all, but also no kernel panic is shown.

Btw, I have an Asus p6t Deluxe and an Ati 4850 HD card with 1gb memory (slightly overclocked by the manufacturer). On 10.5.6 i was able to get the graphics working somewhat (see http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofiversi...155477-0.html): Full resolution and some 3D, but not very stable: on some of the fresh reboots the monitor turns off and I have to remove and reinstall the drivers. Also, sleep mode is not working, after resuming the screen is garbled and not really usable anymore. Also 3D performance is only about 25% of what I get in windows (tried Eve Online). So not really a good option compared to Windows.

How can I find out why my system does not boot anymore?

How to fix this?

EDIT:

I managed to boot into command line with -s and remove the AppleHDA.kext, exit continued to graphic mode.

I then installed the latest ati drivers (see the two download links posted on page 13 of above mentiond link).

I also added AppleHDA.kext again and even that worked now.

The problem with returning from sleep mode have not gone, but it semes the performance is noticably better (getting 80 to 100 fps now, so almost 50% of that of windows). Its acceptaly playable now, but I still prefer windows (it would have to go up to 75% of that of windows for me to use the mac more).

Note: I compared speeds in windowed mode, maybe it is better in full screen mode.

One other very annoying point in in using Mac OS X:

The mouse behaves differently. The accelleration is different, the speedup is noticably higher when you moove the mouse fast, but slower than windows if you move the mouse slowly.

I also observed this on the mac book pro that I use at work (thats why I started experimenting privately with mac).

Maybe the behaviour is better with an original Mac mouse?

Is there a way to modify behaviour of mouse speed more deeply than just the speed settings in system configuration (setting it slower or faster does not doo it, I want to change the increase in accelleration when moving the mouse fast)?

Hi guys

Since this is my first post i will take a little time to introduce myself.

I am Remy AKA Madmax and i am from holland.

I recently bought my first mac and i must say it's FANTASTIC.

But i got some problems while installing Mac on my p6t deluxe.

I followed the instruction in this guide but i will not boot into installation.

I used the asus 132 boot to recognise my Leopard disc. I entered the commands as shown in the guide

rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo busratio=20 -v -f rd=disk2s2 since this is the hfs+ formatted drive

While loading the disc I got this error

''Failed to find directory '/dev'

I even tried to use ideneb , but i restarts every time after installation.

This is my system configuration

Asus P6t Deluxe v1

Core i 7 920

I finished updating today.

There two issues for me:

- after updating I got stuck at an odd kernel panic while booting. Turned out to be an issue with my graphics kext, so I booted with -s and removed all ATI*.kexts and replaced them with the ones from the 10.5.7 update dmg. That allowed me to boot with -x, I installed the Natit for my 4870 and things worked again.

- the vanilla kernel doesn’t seem to support overclocking. I run my i920 at 4.2 Ghz and the system clock was completely off… everything ran way too fast. Dock popped up too fast, gifs and videos played at twice the speed, clock ran at twice the speed... simply everything was affected. I was able to fix that problem by going back to the mach_kernel.voodoo, now everything works as it should again.

AFAIK there is no way to make the vanilla kernel detect the overclocked CPU and adjust to the clockspeed of it, so no vanilla kernel for me.

PS:

LegacyIOAHCIBlockStorage.kext

LegacyAppleAHCIPort.kext

don’t seem to be needed anymore in 10.5.7.

I run without them now and everything still works as it should. The only slight bug is that the internal drives show up as external drives (orange icon).

That can be fixed by using Candybar to replace the external drive icon with the internal drive icon systemwide.

First, which BIOS? I installed with the 150x BIOS. I had to hack around asus' site to get it.. but it's there.

Second, I installed without issue on a 10.5.4 retail DVD.

Third, I used -x option at boot to make it boot after install, before I installed the video drivers.

Also, I used all SATA devices... not PATA drives (disabled that and the SAS controller). I disabled everything in the BIOS that I was suppose to disable.

Hope that helps.

I managed to install iDeneb v1.4 with ease. My only big issue is the very slow SATA access. It sees all my drives, but ones I open them it takes more than 5 minutes for me to see the content. Formating or unmounting the drives takes for ever, majority of the time it fails. I'm using Asus P6T non deluxe, I'm not sure if im using the correct drivers for the Sata. Any thoughts or ideas????

Intel ICH10R Southbridge

JMicron JMB363 SATA & PATA controller

I hope that helps some what....

I can confirm the same issue with the standard P6T, non deluxe, on 2nd HD plugged into SATA2 and Optical drive in SATA3.

Looks like IRQ issues, but I haven't been able to find/resolve yet.

You?

I believe I've solved this by disabling Intel VT-d in the BIOS. Please test and report back.

after painfully completing a working hackintosh I ran into yet another, but this time highly strange problem -

I put up an ethernet link between a mac and a hackintosh with 172.16/24 addresses on both sides using the 2nd ethernet port on both. While the link worked fine upon setting it up and now routing issues were apparent, after reboot BOTH the mac and hackintosh got stuck around networking during boot. Slowly deleting network plists down to all then even disabling the ethernet driver kext and clearing out the caches did not bring either box back to life. The mac is now time-machine restored and the former hackintosh runs windows 7. While recreating the mac without backup should be faster the 2nd time around this was somewhat discouraging.
