I manage to install ipc 10.5.6 with just the busratio=20 command at the Darwin prompt .

Everything went OK and it say's tha the Instalation of Mac OS X is succesfull , but when i try to reboot from the hard drive that i did the installation (it has only one Mac os extended jurnaled gpt partition) just reboots !!

 

I put he busratio=20 command but nothing change :-(

I have been trying for weeks now to get a stable install on the Asus Rampage II Extreme, however I have managed to boot into osx a couple of times, I can't find a stable install. I have all newest editions of boot's such as iatkos, ideneb, leo4all and xxx. I will switch to a retail install, but I want to wait till Snow Leopard comes out to spend money on an official release.

 

Supposably iDeneb v4 should just work, there are more than a dozen comments, on iDeneb being installed with ease. However doesn't seem to work for me. Which parts of customize under the install are essential/ worked for you? Which bios settings did you use? Could really use some help, tried all kinds of installs, and customize options, all kind of boot options.

 

Essential information about the system:

 

Asus Rampage II Extreme with bios 903

Core i7 940

DDR3 1600

9800GT Hybrid Power

Sata 1,5 TB configured as AHCI ( 3 equal partitions, 2 still empty)

 

Did a couple of P45 Intel builds but can't seem to get this working with leopard..

 

I'm up and running using these instructions and have the same Motherboard as you.

 

The LAN was the only part that didn't work, but was fixed fairly easily.

 

So it's definitely possible for you. I had problems when using multiple drives which I removed, once installed I put them back in and it all works fine.

dont have a retail copy right now so I'm messing around with iDeneb1.4

So I installed iDeneb1.4, I can boot with flags, busratio=20 -v

I got the LAN, audio, video all working fine, but I can't get all the cores enabled. Tried DSDT patcher exactly like in MJ's tutorial, on the -v boot I can see all the 8 cores enabled, but once I'm on the desktop and use system profiler I only see 1 core. I used the cpus=1 fix in the iDeneb options, is this what is messing it up?

Hey Jon, welcome to the club

You should definitely try removing the cpus=1 line from your Boot.plist (at least, I presume that's what the fix adds), as it will let your install think it works on just one core. To be sure you've got it fixed correctly afterwards, check how many cores the Activity Monitor shows you (give a yell if you need help with the Boot.plist)

Hey TLG,

Just to be certain - did you make sure to install the patched Voodoo (9.5.0) Kernel, or did you install the Vanilla Kernel? The latter one makes your install boot-loop...

 

Could the freezing problem during installation for p6t deluxe v2's (freezes after about 1-2 minutes into the installing screen with no error) be related to the AppleIntelCPUManagement timing out? Could this cause the CPU to overheat and stop working?

 

Any thoughts?

As I'm not sure how it exactly works, I can't really say.. But wasn't this kext removed from the v3 132-disk by M J? (I can't check myself, as I don't have it around at the moment) And to make your CPU overheat in such a short time, and exactly 1 to 2 minutes after graphic boot, in different circumstances.. Seems farfetched to me, but as said earlier, it just might actually be happening. And in any case - great to have people thinking analystically on the problem

Please don't appologize for your english; as long as poeple know what you mean, it's perfect

Please start with the "-v" flag, to go into verbose mode, and tell us what you see / what happens, this will make any troubleshooting a lot easier

Great work!

Now, to make OS X nicely bootable, you'll want to use the UUID instead of the disk specification as that can change during boot. To do that, you'll have to add the line "boot-uuid=......." (no quotes, uuid on the dots) to your Boot.plist; the UUID can be found in the Disk Utility (info about the partition you want to boot from). Remember to fill in the dashes (minuses) as well when doing this, otherwise it still won't work!

 

For your LAN, try using a kext posted elsewhere on the forum; there are multiple versions of yukon and yukon2 drifting around, make sure you try out a few. (if that fails, grab a generic one and add the lines for the 8056 yourself, it's quite easily done).

 

As for the second graphics card: there is a whole section dedicated to multicard and multimonitor installs on this forum, I suggest you take a look there, they'll probably have more knowledge about this.

So far I've tried with the boot flag busratio=20 and without. I also tried it using no overclock which didn't help either.

Things to try: Hyperthreading off and single core enabled with busratio included/excluded.

So, i get this mobo up and and running at last.

ANYTHING ELSE, or skipping step (someone told me DSDT wasn't needed anymore) SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK!

I CAN'T make Chameleon or EFIstudio, or everything else to work, maybe for my poor knowledge about EFI,

but EVERYTHING seems ok with Munky's method.

 

It's a huge effort for people like me, working with mac from years, but absolutely ignorant in what's there

Why starting up in -v mode, i can read something about kernels doesn't matching?

Is osx still reading the original kernel?

- And now i'm asking myself about a method to save this os on another drive or in an img, to restore in case of failure. Anyone could point me in the right direction?

As I'm not sure how it exactly works, I can't really say.. But wasn't this kext removed from the v3 132-disk by M J? (I can't check myself, as I don't have it around at the moment) And to make your CPU overheat in such a short time, and exactly 1 to 2 minutes after graphic boot, in different circumstances.. Seems farfetched to me, but as said earlier, it just might actually be happening. And in any case - great to have people thinking analystically on the problem

Well, since my last post I've cracked and downloaded iPC Final. I still use slimbuild and the same command arguments. The difference I've noticed is that iPC doesn't have the same "chugging/jumpy" effect visually as the retail did for me (i.e. when the screen that says "preparing installation..." is showing, in the Retail version, the progress bar is jumpy where as the iPC version it's smooth). iPC also did not freeze during install and I was able to actually see a MAC OS desktop!

 

Does anyone know what some of the differences between the iPC and Retail 10.5.6 versions are that might be causing the freezing issue during installation for me?

This is where I keep getting caught.

 

I've redone the installation so many times I almost know the commands off b y heart.

Just a quick reply: seems like a multiple-core error. Please do try to remember to turn *off* 7 cores when booting from the cd, as it hasn't got the DSDT patch installed

Furthermore: It looks like your EFI boot is b0rked. Just boot up from either the 132 cd or a distro disc, and reinstall your EFI (as written in Munky's guide, if that's what you're using). You won't have to install the kexts etc again, just the booter itself (probably went wrong with settings somewhere).

quick look at your post too:

- RAM banks should work out of the box, no changes there. Have you tried other systems? Or even checking the System info in the install mode of a distro? It seems weird.. What does your BIOS say about installed memory?

- Don't worry about kernel mismatched... As long as it works, it's fine (for now). We - the i7 community - just have to wait for the new kernels to come along nicely. As for the EFI partition: to see it in Finder, you'll have to mount it using Terminal (usual way) and then restart Finder - it will auto-magically appear on your desktop

- You could use various apps to make a copy of your install, but in the end, I think the best way is to have a clone of your disk (as in - a second hard drive), because you'll need all the EFI settings as well.. Oh, and try making either notes or file backups of the *exact* kexts that work for you

- on 10.5.6 with the 9.5.0 kernel, FW and USB need a older kext installed, a matching 10.5.5 system version - but to my shame, I can't exactly remember which one right now (although I believe it's Seatbelt.kext).. If you look around the Voodoo 9.5.0 thread, or even this one, you'll find that answer

Jerra, for you i think it's the same, just disable hiperthtreading and use just 1 core in bios settings.

 

about the efi, maybe it was a mistyping, around in the forum i've found much about boot0 problem.

come again with munky's style and now i'm back in the boot.

for the missing ram bank I think it's hardware related. it doesn't show up in bios too, many people got this hardware failure. I'll talk with the pc guy at the shop...

Ok so I ended up installing iDeneb 1.4 in a spare HD for testing. Install went smoothly, I applied the DSDT patch and I'm able to use all 4 cores. The only thing I'm having difficulties is with the SATA HDs. When accessing files it takes a good 1 to 2 minutes to see all the folders. This only happens on the secondary HD not the primary. AHCI is enabled in the Bios, I'm using the Asus P6T non deluxe edition. Can someone lend some hand here....

Unless you did the install from a 10.5.6 dvd then no they won't be the same. ( I think from memory )

 

as you do the DSDT dance

then the EFI dance

 

Then do the 10.5.6 update.

So the system kexts will be later than the kexts on your EFI partition.

 

But thats beside the point. if you look in your EFI/Extensions folder. you will notice these kexts are not actually there.

 

So the system is booting from the kernel on one partition, loading some kexts from that partition and the rest of the kexts from the other partition.

 

Somewhere along the process I don't think it likes the swap back and forth between partitions when looking for kexts/drivers?

 

Hence why I placed the ones that gave trouble on the EFI partition.....(you have 200meg to play with)

 

So no the kernel (voodoo) and associated kexts / kext cache and DSDT file all load from the same partition. (EFI)

 

Probably something similar to why you have to copy the mac_kernel.voodoo to the root directory of the system partition as well as the EFI partition.... Doesn't actually make sense why you should have to....but it doesn't work without doing so. ???

 

At a vague guess, as the 200meg EFI partition is not used as such on a normal MAC.... OSX doesn't normally ever look there for needed drivers etc. It looks to the second partition that holds the normal install of OSX.

 

We are doing the "out of normal" process here to get OSX running on a machine it wasn't ment to. So I guess the kernel or boot process goes something like

 

load boot loader

tell it to load kernel from a particular partition

load drivers from "current kernel partition"

do other stuff

can't find something (a driver say).....

have a sniff around in the normal (mac) areas for the required files. which it then finds on the second (real mac) partition

continue loading from current partition.....which now has changed

 

So by putting required kexts in the same as (not real mac) kernel we get around the problem possibly.

or I could just be talking a whole heap of {censored} and completely off base here???

 

either way, doing the kexts on EFI partition fixed all my probs in one easy step for my system ....dunno?

so far this is what i know/found out

 

-under cpu configuration i have everything disabled + 1 cpu --- I did this because the installation is faster and no more choppy lag loading. The extra cpu settings add too many variables may cause inconsistency. (Works the same with or without, its just without is faster!)

 

-I have my dvd on sata 1 and hdd on sata 2 bc when i can disk1s3 it wouldnt boot and would remain at the infamous "waiting for root device" o_O ***According to disk utility the mac is seeing them backwards (BIOS shows SATA 1 DVD, SATA 2 HDD and OS X installer shows SATA 1 HDD, SATA 2 DVD)

 

-iDeneb v1.4 10.5.6 boots perfectly with all cores on +ht without any boot flags and installs without a sneeze (w/ oc & w/o oc). However I have to use the boot-132 iso after the install (reboots with vanilla and voodoo kernel from install dvd) but I can follow the retail guide and make it work perfectly

 

...buut since im a loser LawLz who likes doing things the hard way, lets move on it why i cant install retail..

 

**As for my problem (i think there may be a simple remedy), during initial os install I cannot unmount the partition that I am installing Leopard on. I cannot do it through disk utility & neither can the installer after the dvd disk verification and installation begins.

I get:

hm, even `mkdir' and `ls -l /Volumes' hangs up

 

got errors like:

disk0s2 I/O error
uid 0 on /Library/Preferences: out of inodes

 

HDD is ok

just created 3 partitions using iDeneb install DVD

 

then started boot132 retail install

seems a bit strange, cause created partitions actually are mounted

the troubles begins when i try to umount

`ps -ax' shows `/sbin/umount disk0s2'

it can not be terminated even with `kill -9'

 

thought there are opened files

`lsof' shows no files opened from /Volumes/OSX

try with a different version retail. Its working with 10.5.4 to install except at the very end it says install failed like after the progress bar completed. Make sure ur sata slots are match correctly.

Startup Disk Utility fixed that problem. Pretty much the whole install is perfect with 10.5.4 retail, but ive learned that the version of the retail disk matters.

 

the only thing that is making it not perfect is the fact that my processor is unknown (i put my bus ratio at 19 for my oc if that might be why)
