I got the same error with the message "Still waiting for root device" with the 10.5.6 DVD.

 

 

Edit: I solved the problem

connecting DVD at Sata 1 and HDD at Sata2

 

The MacInstallatin goes on but:

Is this a problem of the Retail Disc?

I have also my Drives at Sata 1&2.

 

All i have pluged in are the HD & DVD.....I've used an original 10.5 and backup 10.5.4 & 10.5.6 all coming up with the same error....

 

Is your error at the same stage as my photo shows?

 

I'm gonna try using a different HD and re-run the test.

C. [boot your Leopard DVD]

 

1. Burn the .iso you find attached at the bottom on a CD and reboot with it.

NOTE: The .iso comes with no graphic support. If you want to put your graphic kext in it you can do so by following Superhai's method. If you have Windows you have to extract the .iso, and use Transmac (google it) to copy the kext in the initrd.img file. Then burn the CD making sure you burn it as a bootable CD (ISOLINUX.BIN would be your boot file).

2. If you are asked to, press [F8] (this doesn't happen to everybody). When the Darwin prompt appears, press [ESC], eject the CD and put Mac OS X Leopard Retail DVD, wait about 10 seconds (till the green light stops blinking), press [ENTER] and then [F8]

3. Write rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo busratio=20 -v -f rd=disk[n]s3 and press [ENTER]. Your installation should load now. You will have to substitute busratio=20 with busratio=22 if you own a i7 940, or busratio=24 with a 965. You will also have to substitute [n] with the right number. If you did as I told you, your number is 1. If you have more then one HDD or if your DVD is PATA try with a different number, starting from 0. If your DVD is not original, you will probably have to specify a different number instead of 3 as well.

4. Install Leopard!

 

This part had me stumped for days,

 

for the benifit of others, can you please change 2 to read

 

- Press F8 and then the ESC key. You will be presented with the boot device selection menu.

- Swap your CD for the retail install DVD and wait until the lamp on your DVD-Rom goes off. Then press ENTER.

(Your Retail Disk should show up as the booting device now)

 

Especially the Retail disk should show up part. as this had me lost...... I would swap disks.... press F8 etc but all the time the booting device stayed at the original SlimBuild one.

 

Couldn't figure out how to get it to change to the retail disk. Tried typing 80 but got the hdd... tried 81 nothing.

 

For people with no idea this is very frustrating.

 

So the critical thing to even get the installation moving is pressing F8 then the Escape key quickly....before the timer runs out and before you swap discs. then you get the correct boot device when you swap discs and press enter again

I get to the dvd disc verification as well just before installation. If I skip the verification or let it go through after it is done it immediately says "Installation Failed".

 

I read that others experiencing this problem it was because their hard drives were setup as mbr. I only have the single hard drive in and it is setup as GUID with a single partition and journaled.

 

Anyone able to get past this?

I'm really confused. I'm trying to patch the DSDT and am following the instructions above. I turned off HT in my bios for the install first, then installed the OS with the Slim Build - pre-boot.

 

Now for the patching of the DSDT. Terminal is new to me so some of the cammands don't make sense, so I try to follow the directions to the letter.

 

I grabbed the newest DSDT_Patcher1.0.1e and get all the way through the adjustments untill I reach:

 

"cp dsdt.aml /DSDT.aml copy the DSDT to the root directory" - now does this command copy it to the directory or do i drag the new file into the main harddrive directory? When i type this into the terminal I get no confirmation that the file was copied.

 

After this do I reset my bios turning "Intel HT" back on? I have tried this and I can't boot.

Also to I tell the bios to use "ALL Cores?"

So I swapped my velociraptor drive for a caviar drive and left the ports the same and now I have to put in disk0s3 to boot the installation. So for some of you this might be one of the problems depending on your hard drive. It seems the velociraptor defaults to be disk0. Unfortunately I am still having trouble getting the installation to work it still says install fails or just hangs on installing. The installer log shows: OSInstaller[134]: Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume but never moves on. I might try a IDE drive and see how that goes and then clone it if it works.

Sounds like you have a device/disc in your usb port. I had this problem and when you do this (usb key i inserted) if you go look in your bios the boot order says cdrom 1st then usb key 2nd.

 

hence the waiting for root device problem

 

so only cdrom and hdd to install.......no other devices.

 

if you are loading EFI etc and other tools on usb key ready to patch after install maybe better to put these on a cdrom as catch 22 once installed no usb devices work when you plug them in

 

I haven't tried having a usb key in once installed but before patching EFI etc yet.

But reading the thread again....looks like we have to patch DSDT thing then install EFI before rebooting and turning on the HT etc.

install OS X (mine fails at the end - couldn't install boot loader or or selecting startup disc etc.... I just pressed restart.....waited a few mins then pressed the reset button on computer)

Ok I decided to use Digital Dreamer's standard retail dvd installation and I have everything working except audio and all the cores+HT. If I enable all the cores I get stuck with "Still waiting for root device". I have tried moving my hard drives to different ports and no luck. If I disable the HT and go back to 1 core I can boot with no issues except no sound. Can someone help me out here... I am so close to getting everything working now but can't figure out this waiting for device problem.

Hey thanks for the tutorial. I have tried it several times now, but I still cant get all cores working. I think I may be having issues with the DSDT Patcher as I dont get to press 0 to select Darwin OS. I have tried all of the different patchers, but still cant seem to work it out. I am using a 10.5.0 Install disk if that makes any difference. (tried updating post install to 10.5.5 but kernel_task goes to 100% and the system freezes)

 

If anyone could help out it would be greatly appreciated!

Thought I'd give you guys an update after switching cables around after reading other posts...

 

I now have the following Hardware connected;

 

Asus P6T Deluxe (1102 Bios)

i7 920 @ stock speeds

3 x 2 GB Corsair Ram

1 x GTX 260

1 x WD Cavlar Green 1TB Sata Port 1

1 x LG (DVD) Sata Port 6

 

I have download and burnt Bootloader 132.iso without making any changes (ie graphic kext)

using a original disc of 10.5 which came with my white MacBook

 

rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo busratio=20 -v -f rd=disk[1]s3

 

using a copied disc of 10.5.6

 

rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo busratio=20 -v -f rd=disk[X]sY

 

I have replaced X with 0,1

 

I have replaced Y with 0,1,2,3,4,5,6

 

I always end up with 'Still waiting for route device' repeating over & over.

If you downloaded the new iso before the moment I'm writing this (6:55 pm GMT, Jan 6th 2009), you better download it again . I left the EFI strings for my graphic card in the first file I uploaded, so you would probably run into a kernel panic when you try to boot.

I linked to a new version of the Boot-132 iso. The new one will let you boot the installation just like the old one, but it will serve also as a recovery CD to boot into your hackintosh in case your EFI partition gets corrupted for any reason. If you will use it to boot into your already installed and updated Leopard you shouldn't have to enter anything at the Darwin prompt. I can't tell for sure as I have a duplicate voodoo kernel on my root partition, and I'm not even sure it handles the DSDT files, but well... just try it. If it doesn't boot without writing anything, write the same line as per the installation.

 

 

[first things first]

 

I love Mac! I started using it about a month ago at work, and it's brilliant... I fell in love! So I decided to try to install it on my new arriving PC. It took me 8-9 days to come to a fully working install, and only because of the help fo the other members of the forum, and of Google of course! Now, because I'm so magnanimous, I will tell you how to set things up to have your Hackintosh working in just a few hours

 

Please beware that my installation was so complicated and non-linear that I'm doing a reconstruction work of the process by memory here, I will try to guide you through the settings that should avoid in the first place the problems (like kernel panics and so on) that I encountered. But since I don't have the time to test this guide by reinstalling my system, you are welcome to be my tester. If something doesn't work just post your issue here, we'll try to solve it and I'll update the guide.

 

Of course the best advice I can give you is to scroll in this moment to the bottom of the post, and have a look at the links I put there first. This will give you a basic knowledge of the things we are doing here, so that if any problem arises you will be able to solve it in a short time. But if you just can't resist, keep reading!

 

 

A. [let's get started]

 

1. Buy a copy of OS X Leopard (If you are a student go to the Educational Shop for a discount). I know they don't deserve it that much, since they made it so difficult to install Mac OS X on our PC's, but think of it as a donation for the struggle against Microsoft!

2a. Download iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5 and install it, it's quick and it just works on our system. But you won't get apple updates! or

2b. Keep reading for your Vanilla Install.

 

TIP: I suggest you unplug all your HDD from your computer except for the one where you will actually install Leo, this will make things easier during the setup.

 

 

B. [mod you bios]

 

1. Update your BIOS. There are a thousand ways to do that, choose the one you prefer. I installed Vista on an old HDD and updated my BIOS from there, but you don't need to install Windows if you have a floppy disc. Anyway, I think it's better to update it BEFORE the installation, just to play on the safe side.

2. Mod your settings as follows:

     - Main
         - Storage Configuration
              + Configure SATA as [AHCI]
    - Advanced
         - CPU coonfiguration
              + Intel ® HT Technology [Disabled]
              + Active Processor Cores [1]
              + A20M [Disabled]
              + everything else [Enabled]
         - Onboard Devices Configuration
              + High Definition Audio [Enabled]
              + Front Panel Audio [HD Audio]
    - Power
         + Suspend Mode [Auto]
         + Repost Video on S3 Resume [Yes]
         + ACPI 2.0 Support [Enabled]
         + ACPI APIC Support [Enabled]
         - APM Configuration
              + Restore on AC Power Loss [Last State]
    - Boot
         - Boot Device Priority
              + 1st Boot Device [ATAPI CD-ROM]
              + 2nd Boot Device [Hard Drive]

 

 

C. [boot your Leopard DVD]

 

1. Burn the .iso you find attached at the bottom on a CD and reboot with it.

If you did as I told you, your number is 1. If you have more then one HDD or if your DVD is PATA try with a different number, starting from 0. If your DVD is not original, you will probably have to specify a different number instead of 3 as well.

4. Install Leopard!

 

NOTE: You will probably get an error stating something like:

Attempting to Determine CPU multiplier

Determined CPU: FSB multiplier to be 0

Says 0 but makes no sense... the kernel as shipped by apple will not support this and will cause the machine to reboot immediatly... Press y to continue or crt, alt, del to reboot.

Press y and keep going.

NOTE2: Your booting or installation might seem to freeze at times... just leave it there, ti will regain consciousness in a few minutes (up tp 7-10 minutes generally).

 

 

D. [reboot into your system]

 

1. When the system reboots at the end of the installation process, put the CD back in. Again, if you are asked press [F8]. At the darwin prompt press [ESC], write 80 and press [ENTER]. Then type rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo busratio=20 -v -f rd=disk0s2. As stated above, substitute busratio=20 with the suitable number for your processor.

2. Follow the configuration process and boot into your newly installed Vanilla Leopard!

 

NOTE: Your system will probably look like it got stuck at some point while booting, leave it there, it may take 7-10 minutes to get past that point but it will eventually boot.

NOTE2: You might encounter kernel panics while booting. If it is something about graphics, append -x to the line above to boot in safe mode. If it says something like pmap_create kmem_alloc_wired append -legacy, which will trigger the system to boot in 32bit mode.

NOTE3: If you get stuck in the "Do you already own a Mac?" loop, append -s and at the prompt type the following:

 

/sbin/mount -uw /

 

passwd root

 

type a password you choose here

 

touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

 

reboot

 

After reboot enter with the root account and setup your user account. Don't use the root account!

 

 

E. [patch your DSDT]

 

This will enable you to have 4 cores +HT, it will stop those annoying pauses at bootup, and it will give you a DSDT ready for the 10.5.6 upgrade. How nice!

1. Download the patcher you find here, unzip it, for example, on your desktop, and double click on the DSDT Patcher file. When asked, enter 0 (zero) to emulate Darwin OS.

2. Open the terminal and type:

 

cd Desktop/DSDT_Patcher1 change directory to wherever you unzipped the patcher

 

nano Debug/dsdt.dsl open and modify the patched dsdt

 

delete the lines that start with Alias, change this:

./DSDT\ Patcher Debug/dsdt.dsl run the patcher again (you will get 3 errors about files not existing or already existing, that's fine, don't worry about it)

 

cp dsdt.aml /DSDT.aml copy the DSDT to the root directory

 

 

F. [setup your EFI partition]

 

Tired of using the Boot-132 CD every time you want to start your PC? Just follow this guide. In Phase 4 step 3 use the extensions you find attached to this post in the EFI_pack_V3.zip. Then copy mach_kernel.voodoo, com.apple.Boot.plist and the patched DSDT.aml in /Volumes/EFI as in Phase 4 step 4. Also modify the com.apple.Boot.plist file, setting the right UUID and busratio to the bt(0,0)/mach_kernel.voodoo busratio=20 boot-uuid=UUID line. As the last thing, copy mach_kernel.voodoo to the system root directory as well.

 

NOTE: I still don't know why copying the voodoo kernel to the root directory is needed. According to the guide above you would only need it to be in the EFI partition, but it looks like the whole thing works only this way.

 

 

G. [update to 10.5.6]

 

1. Download 10.5.6 Combo Update and install it via USB stick or drive.

2. If you want to use VMWare, before rebooting download XNU Voodoo-Kernel 9.5.0 Release 1.0 Revision A and install it.

 

 

H. [install your graphic card drivers]

 

Since everybody has a different graphic card, there is no unique way to make it work. Search for your own device and follow instructions accordingly. If you can, use an EFI String.

 

 

I. [fix LAN and Audio]

 

For LAN open the terminal and type the following:

 

sudo nano /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleYukon2.kext/Contents/Info.plist

 

find and change <key>Yukon-88E8053</key> to <key>Yukon-88E8056</key> (change 53 to 56)

find and change <string>0x436211AB</string> to <string>0x436411AB</string></key> (change 62 to 64)

find and change <string>Yukon Gigabit Adapter 88E8053 Singleport Copper SA</string> to <string>Yukon Gigabit Adapter 88E8056 Singleport Copper SA</string> (change 53 to 56)

 

Press Ctrl+O (that's the letter "o") and [ENTER] to save the file, then press Ctrl+X to close nano.

 

For Audio you have two options, choose either one, NOT both:

 

1. Install the attached AppleAzaliaAudio.kext using the method you prefer into your system Extensions folder (don't put it in the EFI partition, it won't work). This will give you only Line-Out from the back panel, and no problem whatsoever (except Skype will crash whenever you make or receive a call).

 

2. Backup and delete the existing AppleHDA.kext in your system Extensions folder, then install the attached AppleHDA.kext. This will give you back panel Line-Out, SPDIF Out, front panel Headphones-Out and front panel Microphone-In. It will also cause a kernel panic when you shutdown the computer if you have previously stopped it. A little annoying, but not a major problem at all.

 

NOTE: If one day you will want to switch from one to the other, you will have to delete the kext not needed anymore.

 

 

J. [reboot!]

 

Reboot (without the Boot-132 disc this time) and enable HT and all cores in the BIOS. At the darwin prompt type -v -f and press enter. If you can boot in a fully working system, it's time for the final step:

 

 

K. [get rid of the darwin boot prompt]

 

Mount the EFI partition and open the apple.com.Boot.plist file with any text editor. Set this:

	<key>Quiet Boot</key>
<string>No</string>

to this:

	<key>Quiet Boot</key>
<string>Yes</string>

 

L. [done ]

 

You can now reboot and use Apple Updater for any update!

hi, my problem is, the installation boot for leopard doesnt want to start... it keeps rebooting and rebooting.... i have already followed your step, but the step when i changed the boot182 with leopard installation disc, it simply doesnt want to start... why is that? the bios setting has already been setup according to your step

Ok I now have everything working except when I enable ALL cores and HT I get "Still waiting for root device". I am not sure what to do as I have the DSDT patch in place. Is there a way to read the DSDT.aml file to see if it has the correct settings?

I had this before, and it was (I think) because I selected the wrong root device to load ie disk0s3 instead of disk0s2 in your Kernel options.

 

You have done the install EFI part? and copied the DSDT file to the root of the EFI partition?

Video is working

Network is working (I had to replace the whole AppleYukon Kexts with older versions....mine somehow didn't like the newer 10.5.6 ones ??

 

<<Edit Actually come to think of it, I don't think I booted with the -f option when fiddling with getting the network working...allowing it to rescan the changes I made to the .plist file etc. So maybe the newer 10.5.6 drivers would be fine on my config? >>

MJ thanks for the great tutorial. Everything seems to be working except for my Sound. I've tried both ways, but no such luck. I'm using the Asus P6T "not the deluxe edition". Any suggestions? also I kept getting a Kernel Panic when Shutting down or restarting.

Thanks for responding. It is nice to have some help. Anyway I reran the DSDT patcher both with the method you indicated and manually following M J's guide and the problem I am seeing is that the dsdt.dsl file that is generated doesn't contain any "Alias CPU" references to delete. I have attached my file that is generated for you to look at. Do you know how I would modify this? If I remove dsdt.aml from the root directory I cannot boot at all so I know it is somewhat working... maybe just missing references to allow all cores. Hope you have an idea. Thanks again

Very odd looking dsl file. Admittedly, I haven't seen very many of them, but I have seen a pre-edited version from a ASUS board and the processor layout is very different. The processor build is supposed to look like the following:

So I'm still stuck with no Sound tried different methods and drivers. Since I'm using the Asus P6T *none deluxe edition* I need to find a working Realtek ALC1200. Does anyone have any suggestion?? In addition I am also getting the "AppleHDAcontroller has corrupted the registry" error when shutting down or restarting...

I had no problems with the AppleAzaliaAudio.kext

I will rename the system.kext and see if it works. Ill keep u posted. Thanks again for everything.

Chenda, I tried using the APpleAzaliaAudio.kext you posted, but I can't get the sound to work. I have the same board as you. Is there a specific way I should install it or do I have to remove some other kext? any input or suggestion will be appreciated...

I have my HDD plugged into the SATA1 and the DVD-RW into SATA2. Sometimes it's rd=disk0s3 or rd=disk1s3 depending on what seems to be random chance...

Are you using a Original Retail disc or a Backup/Copy....... I've been been trying to get past waiting for root device for age's..... people appear to lean towards its either it being the the DVD disc o the DVD drive its self......

 

I have just switched my cables as per someone's post here, DVD sata1 & HD sata2..... am using a copy of 10.5.6 and an original 10.5 which came with my MacBook...

 

Which brand of sata DVD driver do you use? I've tried 2 LG drivers so far without joy...
