I started with an empty drive.

Booted with iPC OSX86 DVD, formatted my secondary HDD as GPT with Disk Utility, created a HFS+J partition for OSX at the beginning and then a FAT32 partition (Then I converted it to NTFS from within Windows Vista, which is minding its own business on a separate drive).

 

Installed iPC 10.5.6.

 

I've been using this partition scheme + various EFI bootloaders since 10.5.4.

 

What sort of problem are you having?

I was trying to test my PC_EFI_v9 directions (on first post) on a GUID partition table, because I was getting reports of errors. So I formatted another hard drive I had with a GUID partition table. Followed my own steps, etc. The bootloader stops at boot1:error. So I was looking around the forums for solutions...

 

I tried munky's method for installing efi on that 200mb partition created by GUID, same error. I tried Universal installer, same error. I tried the latest RC of Chameleon 2, it just stops at boot0: done and freezes. I then went ahead and formatted the drive again as MBR, no errors and everything worked flawless.

 

The drive is an internal IDE hard drive, so maybe that's the problem, but i doubt it, since MBR works and GUID doesnt. I looked up the error online and some people fixed it with non-case-sensitive formatting, but that seems to be the default now, so idk.

I created a test GUID installation, and I appear to be encountering problems with my PC_EFI method. I have tried other methods of EFI installation, but none of them appear to be working when I format the drive GUID. Does anybody have a GUID partition with a working installation of PC_EFI? If so, how did you do this?

 

I have GUID partition and I have installed PC_EFI with these step in the tutorial ans ir works pecfectly!!! Remember install bootloader in your macintosh partition.

This little guide assumes you used an MBR partition during install as the tutorial states. It also assumes you used the same hard drive for Windows. It also assumes you successfully installed Leopard Retail using a thumb drive with Boot132.

 

Step 1: Boot into Leopard Retail and install the necessary kexts for Internet browsing using Kext Helper.

 

Step 2: Download this file: bootloader.zip ( 861.85K ) Number of downloads: 36

.

 

Step 3: Extract the file anywhere, it doesn't really matter where. An easy place would be your desktop. After you extract, run Bootloader.pkg. Follow the on screen steps (During install, if asked where to install, select your Macintosh partition. DO NOT RESTART after install.

 

Step 4: Install and run Tinker Tool and enable viewing of hidden files.

 

Step 5: Travel to the root of your Macintosh disk. Locate the file labeled "boot" and the folder "Extras". Delete both of this and empty the trash.

 

Step 6: Travel to the thumb drive where you installed Boot132. Copy the file labeled "boot" and paste it to the root of your Macintosh folder.

 

Step 7: Go back into the Boot132 drive and mount the image "initrd.img" by double clicking on it. It will then be listed under Device on the left navigation bar, click it and copy the "Extras" folder from there and paste it into the root of your Macintosh drive.

 

Reboot your system and make sure your hard drive is your first boot device.

Yeah, I I've got OSX installed on a guid-partitioned disk as well. Following the guide "How To Install Bootloader and Dual Boot: PC EFI V9" worked fine for me too. Now I don't need that usb boot stick any more either!

You need to apply an SMBIOS patch. You can find them from here http://######.com/index.php?option=...9&Itemid=74 . I used the first two. After that the About This Mac box should be updated with the right clock frequency, however, the processor name might still show up as unknown, to fix this: Use osx86tools to and auto-detect the correct processor name.

 

This should probably be added to the tutorial.

I tried on a Test system with OS X. I did flash the BIOS and then DIRECTLY installed OS X from a RETAIL LEOPARD disk. Took some Kext in and system was running. I managed 2 Problems which I coudlnt solve. Shutdown Probs, and No Video Signal in DVI only in VGA.

 

So now I have some Questions. I sold the Test system and now that there is a way to get my 4870 in OS X I want to install OS X.

 

My System:

 

- Core2QUAD, 4GB RAM, Radeon 4870 1GB, some hard drives, all SATA, ASUS P5Q Pro (Atheros)

 

So what I want to know is what I need.

 

1. I want to flash my bios ? Which file ?

 

2. Then I want to install OS X Directly (dont know why you all using aktikos or such derivates) ?! any reason ?

 

3. I want to boot with my VISTA (already installed) and OS X (separate drive) What I have to do?

 

3. Which drivers I need ? Atheros, Audi HDA driver, Shutdown fix (is there a new one, old doenst work), where do I get the 4870 driver ? Anything else ? I want a stable OS X without problems.

You can only install it directly if you install to a GUID partitioned hard drive (windows doesn't support GUID, only MBR). OSX is able to support mbr, but only after applying a patch.

 

Also, it is easier to install iaktos or ideneb and then restore the retail image of osx into a second partition(and adding the patch), which you then boot, and install the os from (into the first partition). This is because the retail version of osx comes on a dual layer dvd, while iaktos/ideneb fits on a single layer dvd. Dual layer dvds cost much more than the single layer ones.

 

10. Open RETAIL IMAGE Partition > System > Installation > Packages, paste OSInstall.mpkg in here. (Very Important Step if you are installing MAC OS X Retail on a Disk with MBR)

 

Of course, if you already have a retail version of osx and are installing to a guid-partitioned disk, you can skip this and install osx directly from the retail dvd. You still need a bootloader though. (just read the first post in this thread, it tells you how to do that)

Note that installing OS X Directly from a partition on the hard drive to another partition on the same hard drive is insanely fast compared to using a dvd. Thw whole retail installation took just above 11 minutes on my system when I timed it. (after doing the partitioning etc)

Heres an alternative method. Download the program Transmac. Find it online from the same place you found the patched ISO. After you install Transmac select the restore partition you created, right click on it, and put Format with Disc Image. Use the patched ISO. After that use Boot132 to boot from the Restore partition. This should allow you to skip disc burning. Install to the other Macintosh partition you created.

 

I apologize if I'm not much help, but the problem appears to be with your computer booting from the cd drive. Have you ever tried booting any other Operating systems before with that drive? Try a Windows XP disc.

Because when I open the Programm Transmac in Windows 7 there is not the restore Partition there is my CD Driver and more not and i can mount a .iso File but more not???

Yes, I have. I previously just used the usb stick method, but I installed PCI_EFI on the osx partition according to your guide. Unplugging the usb stick, and everything boots. Make sure your bios is set to boot on that drive containing osx..

I'm confused... Did you try the PC_EFI method? Try that and then use F8 at boot prompt to select which hard drive you want to boot from. If you follow my instructions you wont need the 200mb boot partition. Also try the package I gave you instead of the Universal installer method. I'm going to try a GUID partition on a test install. I seem to be getting a lot of problems with the PC-EFI method on GUID.

 

thanks for your suggestion,my osx hd is sata guid format,right now i am using xxx osx86 10.5.6 final iso and everything works for my p5q ,including shutdown/sleep/restart/.....once i got time ,i will try again with retail 10.5.6,thanks again

If you are using the onboard Atheros with the AttansicL1eEthernet driver in this thread, your Time Machine will not work until you add an EFI string so the IOBuiltin value is flagged <true/>.

 

The attached is the EFI for it (P5Q only)... If you are also running EFI strings for graphics be sure to combine the attached with your GFX strings (OSX86Tools makes this easy)

 

Don't forget to delete the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist after applying the strings

I think the drive is not active that is why you are receiving the boot0 error....You need to add a boot flag tot he GUID drive......May be you can use GParted to add a boot flag to the GUID Drive......

1. Go to this post: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=136586 Scroll through the list of modified BIOS until you hit P5Q Pro. Go ahead and use this one: 2002-BIOS-Asus_P5Q_PRO_for_MAC_OS_X_&_all_OS__incl._by_Juzzi..ROM.zip . Follow the directions on the first page of this post on how to flash, and the only things I would change after you flash your bios is enable AHCI Storage, and disable ExpressGate.

3. You can use a GUID partition if you have two hard drives. If you have a DL dvd or a retail disc, go for it. A restore leopard disc that came with an Apple computer will NOT work. I prefer following the guide for a number of reasons, including faster installation. After that just follow the instructions for dual booting. I suggest using the RC1 of Chameleon 2 instead of my current PC_EFI_v9 method. I will be posting directions for that shortly.

 

4. Most of the drivers are on the front page of this post and the absolutely necessary ones are preloaded with the current Boot132 bootloader. But I'll make up a list of what I used:

 

Sound: Realtek ALC1200 (just dragged both kexts into the kext helper at the same time, worked for me.)

Internet: Atheros L1e Driver

Patches: AHCI Fix kext, AppleSMBIOSEFIResolver, AppleSMBIOSEFI (look up for the link to those two). (Also note: I used osx86tools to fix "Unknown" processor name.

If none of the shutdown kexts work, chances are it has something to do with the video card. Let it sit for a little bit and make sure it doesnt shutdown. Also pay attention and see if it shuts down before installing the video driver.

It depends, if you have an older tv with just s-video or composite (yellow wire) video, you need S-Video on your video card to work. Search the video card forums, however, it isn't likely you will get S-Video to work. If you have an LCD, you can just use the VGA (D-Sub) port to connect it your LCD (most LCD's have one). If the LCD has a DVI, that would work even better... if it doesn't, you can also convert DVI to HDMI.

If your tv is older, the only alternative is to find a USB tv-out device (or PCI card) that will work with Mac. Try the Apple store.

First, props to Robert for all his hard work. I have completed my install and need help with a few issues:

 

1) I installed the openhalt.kext and it works but will not reliably shut down. Also the Atheros lan does not come back on wake. If there is no fix how can I remove the kext?

 

2) I am trying to use the SIL sata ports as normal SATA ports to no avail. Has anyone been able connect a boot drive and sata DVD? I would like to keep the 6 ICH10 ports for my raid array. If they cannot work can someone recommend a good 2 port PCI sata card?

 

3) Does anyone know how to balance loads across 2 NICs in my server?

I have a P5Q running a retail install of 10.5.6. I installed the Leopard Server packages and I can't get past the install because it says it' "can't find a network" and then refuses to continue.

 

I booted with a spare Leopard Retail drive and installed the network drivers on the Leopard Server drive, but that did not work. What files do I need to modify?

 

Is there any way I can bypass the setup screen so I can fix the network drivers?

How to Install the Chameleon 2 Bootloader

 

Alright the RC of Chameleon 2 looks great! This should work on both GUID and MBR partitions. If you dual boot with multiple hard drives on GUID, you will enjoy the added benefit of your other operating systems being auto-detected and not needing to press Esc and enter in a drive number.

There may be problems with booting Windows XP on a seperate hard drive using Chameleon. This is a known problem by the Chameleon team. I am working on a solution for this. To boot XP on a different drive, use F8 at bios and select the hard drive. To the best of my knowledge, XP on single drive still works.

If you are upgrading from my PC_EFI_v9 tutorial there are three things you should do first:

1. Delete the file named "boot" in the root of your Mac drive.

2. Ensure the "Extra" folder on the root of your drive is indeed titled "Extra" and not "Extras" (I can't remember how it was, I just deleted it.)

3. Cut and paste the "Extra" folder to your desktop.

 

Installation:

 

1.Download the Chameleon 2 Installer Package. Unfortunately, I can't provide a link because of board rules, but if you do a google search for "Chameleon 2 Installer Package" you will find a page titled "Chameleon: Chameleon 2.0RC1" is out! . You can find the package from there. (Make sure you download the Installer Package and not the Binaries.)

 

2. Install it to your Macintosh drive.

 

3. Located the initrd.img file on your Boot132 and mount the image. Go inside of the mounted Initrd image and copy the folder titled "Extra" to the root of your Macintosh drive. (If you are upgrading from my PC_EFI_v9 tutorial, you can just paste the Extra folder from you desktop to the root of your Mac drive)

 

4. Restart your computer.

 

Please also note: If you used an MBR partition and installed Windows on the same hard drive AFTER installing Mac OS X, and it continues to boot straight to Windows instead of the bootloader. I suggest you download the GParted live cd and make sure your Macintosh drive is set with a "boot" flag.

Someone have had the same problem? The only solution that I found is to cancel the mac partition and install again the Leo4All.

Follow the directions on the first post to install boot132 and try booting 10.5.6 with that. If it works, some of your necessary kexts were overwritten while installing the 10.5.6 update.

 

If it doesn't work, boot with -v at boot prompt and take a picture of the screen and post it here.

I think you are trying to install the 10.5.6 Update directly on the Leo4 all installation....That is why you are receiving a kernel panic

I think one of his kext files got over-written in the update process. The boot132 should allow him to boot since it supplies the kexts through the Extras folder on the thumbdrive. I believe the Leo4All installs the kexts directly to the System/Library/Extensions folder.

 

Please also note: This is one of the key advantages to using a bootloader with its own "Extra" folder. The necessary kexts will stay there allowing for future updates without much worry for breaking the installation.

The Leo4Allv3 will work well... The Live DVD might... I've never tried it. If you are planning to use this guide I imagine the LiveDVD will be fine if you are just planning on restoring the retail image.

 

You won't void your warranty or physically burn or damage your board in any way. The ROMs provided by Juzzi have only been changed by a few lines of code and Vista runs fine. If you have not already changed your storage mode to AHCI, in some cases Vista may crash on bootup... Microsoft knows about this error and has already listed a solution to fix it. Some don't encounter the error at all. If you do, disable AHCI and Vista will boot properly, PM me and I'll provide the link for the fix (Alternatively you can google it yourself). Take my advice and don't worry so much... After modding the bios, follow this guide and you will come out with a great Leopard machine!
