EDIT Okay I managed to get it to restore the desired partition just by renaming it to Leopard and reformatting. I replace the file. I successfully boot the installer using Boot132. Install still stops with the error: "The install could not validate the contents of the 'Essentials'."

Did your image verify correctly? Try mounting it.

Hi, Everybody.

I followed the steps described (with the exception that I use iDENEB 1.4 10.5.6 and OSX 10.5.6) but I'm stuck with the following problem:

All steps up to 8.8 go smoothly. But when I start the Install, I immediately get the "Install Failed" message saying that: "The Installer could not locate the data it needed to install the software. Check your install media or internet connection and try again or contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

Where am I going wrong?

Regards,

Igor

Your Retail Install Media is corrupt. Obtain another copy.

But all files are recovered to the RETAIL IMAGE partition without any reported problems. After the failure I also tried to install OSX from the same DVD, just to see if the DVD is OK. The checking of the DVD before the installation really starts says it is fine.

However, I downloaded another version and I still have the same message "The installer could not locate the data it needed to install the software".

:) I solved the problem myself. Since the 10.5.4 retail image I had wasn't working correctly, I decided to try a 10.5.6 retail image. I followed the same exact steps to replace the Install package. Everything installed fine. Restart and shutdown don't seem to work for me, with or without the Openhalt kext. The signal to the monitor goes off and the monitor goes to standby, but the PC is still on and doesn't restart or shut off. I waited around 30 seconds to see if it just took a while, still no luck. However, resart and shutdown worked fine before I installed the graphics driver (radeon x1900xt). So I think it's something with the driver. Any ideas or solutions? If none, then its no biggie.

I have a question though. What is the purpose of AppleDecryptor and Disabler.kext? The system runs fine without them. Are they important for updating or something?

I couldn't really find any information no matter how hard I investigated. So I got a bit curious and I may have figured out an easier way of booting leopard without going through the hassle of creating a boot132 partition and making it active. I also see there are some problems with that. I'm sure some of you already knew how to do this, but for noobs like me, it might be useful as an installation step.

So the first thing I tried was installing PC_EFI_v9 and patching the DSDT. The boot went straight to the spinning thing with the apple logo but it was hanging there for far too long, so no luck booting. I had a theory that this was because I didn't install the Disabler and Decrypt, but oh well, didn't try that.

Instead I looked at the boot132 folder and the root of my Mac drive. I noticed both contained a Extras folder and both contained a file named 'boot'. I knew that the Extras folder was for Kexts that would boot up with pc_efi, but me being the curious one decided to just delete the 'boot' file and the Extras folder off my Mac drive, and replace them with the ones in the initrd.img image located on boot132. After a restart, the computer successfully booted to the boot132 menu.

That was definitely a lot easier than trying to put it on a partition.

Hello all,

First off....I would like to say this is a fantastic forum and will spread the word about it.

Now down to business...i have two problems--an old G3 with tiger 10.4.4 or 5 and a newly upgraded PC that wont install leopard.

i've read threads here and one question comes to mind? Are IDeneb and iATKOS the only distros that work on these mobos? Cause i have leo4allV3 and it gives me constant reboots and would like a solution that doesnt involve flashing the bios...if at all possible.

Thanks

If you tried another image then I have no idea whats wrong are you selecting everything while installing? try selecting just X11 and the fonts..don't select the additional languages and printer drivers which you don't need.

I think you may be missing the following steps:

Once it is done run this zip.gif TinkerTool.zip ( 1.95MB ) Number of downloads: 735

img-resized.png Reduced 65% http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...st&id=41745 569 x 421 (35.42K) //

8. Select Show Hidden and System Files and then click on Relaunch Finder

img-resized.png Reduced 75% http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...st&id=41746 800 x 457 (56.84K) //

9. Now unpack and copy OSInstall.mpkg zip.gif OSInstall.zip ( 855.62K ) Number of downloads: 656

10. Open RETAIL IMAGE Partition > System > Installation > Packages, paste OSInstall.mpkg in here. (Very Important Step if you are installing MAC OS X Retail on a Disk with MBR)

11. It will ask you whether you want to replace the file.... Click on Replace

12. Reboot the machine

Now there is LAN Driver available for Aetheros L1e

You can find ATL1E on:

* Desktop Motherboards

Asus P5Q

Asus P5Q-SE

Asus P5Q-SE/R

Asus P5Q Pro

Asus P5KPL-CM

* Laptops

Acer Aspire 6920G

Acer Aspire 8930

Asus EeePC 901, 1000 and 1000H

I have uploaded the driver in Post # 1

First, I'd like to thank Robert for this wonderfull post! I followed his guide 100% and it worked 100% for me ;)

I have only a sound issue: playback is fine, but recording via a headset mike in Ventrilo or Teamspeak sounds very, let's say, "unclean" and ppl told me, that sound quality is very poor and very quiet.

I turned up my recording controller to the right but that made it only worse (both in vent/ts2 and system preferences).

All I can tell is that this mike worked perfectly under Linux and Windows.

Anybody else got this problem (solved) ? Thanks in advance!

SUCCESS!

100% Compatibility with P5Q Pro.

Thanks to the new Atheros Ethernet Kext! And thanks to Robert for a great and easy guide!

Words of advice to Noobs:

1. After modding the BIOS, The only other modification needed is to change your Disk configuration to AHCI. If you copy word for word whats shown on the pictures on the other guide, you might end up changing some RAM voltages and junk you don't need to change and depending on your hardware it will cause instability.

2. Don't bother trying to create a hard drive partition for Boot132. Use a thumb drive for installation and first bootup. Then install PC_EFI_v9. Add the kexts located inside the intrimd image file to the Extras folder located on the root of the Macintosh drive.

3. Patch the SMBIOS to fix the About This Mac

4. Don't be in a rush to delete the volume you restored the Leopard Retail Image to. Depending on mistakes you make and the kexts you use (or misuse) it might be easier to do a fresh install if you encounter bootup problems with the wrong kexts.

can't use more than 2gigs of ram, 4gigs crashes the system on the grey apple screen

Yes, and restart works. One of my previous posts had problems with it, but they were caused by my video drivers. I tried other video drivers for 10.5.6 and now it turns off and restarts. I just have to wait like 10-15 seconds sometimes, but it works.

Now I was asked to give a little guide on how to add the bootloader without the need to create a seperate partition for boot132, or to use a thumbdrive with boot132.

How To Install Bootloader and Dual Boot

This little guide assumes you used an MBR partition during install as the tutorial states. It also assumes you used the same hard drive for Windows. It also assumes you successfully installed Leopard Retail using a thumb drive with Boot132.

Step 1: Boot into Leopard Retail and install the necessary kexts for Internet browsing using Kext Helper.

Step 2: Download this file: Bootloader.zip .

Step 3: Extract the file anywhere, it doesn't really matter where. An easy place would be your desktop. After you extract, run Bootloader.pkg. Follow the on screen steps (During install, if asked where to install, select your Macintosh partition. DO NOT RESTART after install.

Step 4: Install and run Tinker Tool and enable viewing of hidden files.

Step 5: Travel to the root of your Macintosh disk. Located the filed labeled "boot" and the folder "Extras". Delete both of this and empty the trash.

Step 6: Travel to the thumb drive where you installed Boot132. Copy the file labeled "boot" and paste it to the root of your Macintosh folder.

Step 7: Go back into the Boot132 drive and mount the image "initrd.img" by double clicking on it. It will then be listed under Device on the left navigation bar, click it and copy the "Extras" folder from there and paste it into the root of your Macintosh drive.

Reboot your system and make sure your hard drive is your first boot device.

Robert RX thanks again

Amazing tutorial!, now that the Attansic L1E onboard LAN is working we are in real business

I hope the LAN not working after sleep gets fixed soon though.

I've successfully installed 10.5.6 off the 10.5.6 retail DMG and partition on my ASUS P5Q, got my nVidia GeForce 9600GT 512mb PCIe working perfectly by using EFI strings. Everything else was from your guide, and now I see you updated to include the LAN drivers.

the only things that I see strange in my install is the fact that under about this mac it lists my processor as 3.8ghz on unknown, and model as product name. I'm running a Intel Core 2 Quad core Q9400 2.67ghz, running at stock values. I did notice that the BIOS configuration file you provided in your guide seemed to have set some memory voltages, or at least it looks that way since those entries don't just say auto like everything else on that section of the BIOS. I'm not completely sure if sleep/shutdown/restart are working fully, I notice sometimes it takes very long to turn of, or just doesn't.

Also a note for the folks using this guide from scratch, in case the BIOS configuration file hasn't been updated, the onboard lan which is now working, is disabled after applying the OC profile. So just enable it in BIOS.

Thanks again for the amazing guide, this system is running so nicely now

The reason your processor isn't detected right is because that information is stored in your SMBIOS. You need to apply a SMBIOS patch to Leopard and it should detect the proper value. You can find this kext file from this website: http://######.com/index.php?option=...9&Itemid=74 . I used the first two and they worked fine. It still may show up as an Unknown Processor. Just use osx86tools to correct this. RAM seems to always come up as 800Mhz, I manually changed mine to 1066MHz using osx86 tools.

You're absolutely correct, the OC profile does adjust the voltages. In some cases, copying this can lead to an unstable system, as I experienced myself. In my opinion, this should be removed from the tutorial steps, as the only real adjustment needed after flashing the bios is to adjust the storage to AHCI. If I were you I would set everything back to defaults and just change the storage configuration to AHCI, just to be safe.
