Great guide Robert, after many hours of trying, I finally got OS X 10.5.6 on my machine. Without a doubt, retail is much faster and smoother than anything else, the feel is just like a mac (had one before). For those of you wanting to try retail, it is highly recommended, you will not regret it. This guide will work, you just have to look for answers and keep trying. Refer to Juzzi guide if needed (gotta thank him too). Gparted live cd didn't work for me, but the USB worked, partedmagic has a good guide on how to do this. IDE dvd didn't work either, so I used external HD to load the retail image, very fast install. I've read somewhere that sometimes you have to force master by setting the jumper on master instead of cable select, that worked for the iDeneb install.

After the retail install of 10.5.4, update to 10.5.5 and 10.5.6 using apple's update. At first I had problems at login, but after the updates, no problems. Just still trying to figure out how to boot with windows options and os x options without the USB flash drive.

Robert, question for you, in your step11, you're basically using the syslinux and copying the boot 132 file into the MBR first partition correct? Is there any way to do this without using windows? Or is there any other easy way to boot with the option of choosing win or os x? I followed your partition method of fat32, hfs+, hfs+, ntfs, installed windows and realized that the ntfs is an extended drives and cannot boot into windows.

I was also thinking of erasing the retail drive (image drive of os x) and install windows on top of that, but thought that would over write MBR. What I would like to do is have one HD with win xp and os x and have option of booting to either.

Or, I was going to install os x on one drive and win xp and vista on another. Just in case I wanted to redo the OSX install and keep win untouched. If doing this route, how can I write the MBR to have options of booting to the desired os?

Lastly, got any solutuions to video card, got a geforce 8800gt 512mb and installed the NVKUSH and it made things worse.

Thanks,

Fantastic tutorial Robert!! Everything worked in the MAC OS as it should. You get my vote!

I did slip up somewhere though....

After I partitioned the drive, I booted natively to XP (not using the USB drive) just to ensure the system was not affected - all was well. However, after the OS X install (booting using the flash drive), when I try booting with XP, I get an error, i.e. cannot find NTLDR. I used GParted to browse the windows partition and it does contain the the NTLDR file in the root direcory. Are there any tools out there that I can use to try to fix this? - or do I have to re-install windows?

I have a p5q-em with the G45 intel graphics chipset, unfortunatley I cannot find an OS X driver for this chipset. Is my only option an external video card or would you have any suggestions or have insight if a driver may be available soon?

Thanks for all of your help - this is awesome!

Robert,

I am trying to make bootable USB flash drive following your instructions.

I formatted to FAT32, SYSLINUX.EXE flash drive: and copied your customized P5Q 132 Boot files into the flash memory.

When I go into Disk Management, USB drive is not active. When I right-click on it, the option to "Make this drive active" is grayed out and I can't make it active.

Also can you make a customized Boot 132 CD image for P5Q? I found that sometimes, in the BIOS setting, the boot priority selection did not even have USB stick even when I plugged it in. Bootable CD always gets recognized at least...

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm having problems booting from the flash drive. I did the SYSLINUX.EXE U:, and made sure its active in Disk Management, copied the boot 123 files to the root of the drive. I set the P5Q to boot from USB, but when it boots, I get "Missing operating system" error.

Please Help.

Is this after you are given a choice which partition to boot from or you don't see the choice? If not, did you press F8 after the boot beep? Pressing F8 brings up the dialoge box providing a choice of partitions to boot from.

Sorry to bug Robert - but do you think that the iso will help me with the NTLDR issue? I'm not an expert at this but have made it this far - your helps is much appreciated.

Any suggestions on how to choose which OS to boot if install XP / Vista on one HD and OS X retail on another?

I have Windows Vista and Windows XP in one HDD... and MAC OS X on another.

So I boot from the first HDD an it goes directly into Vista boot menu.

If I want to boot OSX then I press F8 key while starting the Computer and then boot from the Second HDD or USB Flash Drive and then boot into Mac OS X.....

The way that I set it up was using one HDD with 4 partitions

1) Windows XP-284GB

2) 1GB Empty for now to be used as a boot partition per your tutorial

3) Retail Image 15GB

4) MAC OSX 100GB

I do have another hard drive in the computer that I can use but have not done so yet.

I set the BIOS to boot from USB, so it is the same thing as pressing F8 and choosing the USB drive. I think the problem is the Boot 123 isn't working, or it is failing to boot. The motherboard is trying to boot from USB drive, and it is not finding any OS to boot from.

Also after I installed iDeneb, it errors after a restart. It complain something about apple.boot.list or something. I installed iPC 10.5.5 and it install ok, but I can't get my audio and video drivers working. I have a P5Q so I assume it is the ALC1200 audio, and my video is a Geforce 7200 GS 128M, and I tried Diabolik's installers but it doesn't seem to work on my card, I get no CI/Qtz.

I'm almost at the point of giving up OSX on this machine and just live with Vista. :(

To get the Graphics Driver working

1. Remove all the Geforce kexts and Nviidia Kexts from System > Library > Extensions

2. Now install Nvkush Installer from http://diabolik1605.com/DHF/

3. Now install the Graphics Update Kexts from http://diabolik1605.com/DHF/

4. Reboot the Computer

To get Audio Working

1. Remove AppleHDA.kext, ALCinject.kext and Azaliaaudio.kext that are there in the Extentions folder

2. Install this driver using Kexthelper

3. Reboot

Thanks for the patience to help, but I tried your exact instructions, and either the video nor audio works. In System profiler, it still reports no built-in audio and no CI/Qtz for video. Also, now when I launched Audio MIDI Setup, it just crashes. It wasn't doing that before. I'm not sure why I'm not having any success with this guide. :)

Edit: I tried the video steps again, and this time video works. I'm getting CI/Qtz now. I have some success now. Gonna try the audio steps again and hope I get lucky again.

Edit 2: No luck on the Audio. :D Maybe I don't have ALC1200, The Asus site says the P5Q has ALC1200 though, so I thought it does.

Just remember that in the System Profiler it won't show you the Audio but when you go to System Preferences > Audio you will be able to see the audio options.

Sometimes the option selected is Internal Headphone you need to change it to Internal Speakers to get the aound

Hi just a couple of newbie questions. sorry. Im just getting into osx86.

I currently have the P5Q mobo. I am running Vista right now and have a separate NTFS storage hard drive. I downloaded the Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4 9E25 Retail and I am planning to burn it onto DVD DL disc. I dont want to affect my vista setup at all. I plan to buy a seperate sata hd to install OSX and then select boot from the bios to change between the systems. Would my seperate NTFS storage drive work for both OSX and Vista. Also, If i plan to use a dedicated OSX hard drive and burn the retail disc which method of install should I follow. Thanks

I definitely have the Asus P5Q, there's no Pro or anything after P5Q.

After I switch to Internal Speakers, audio now works. :thumbsup_anim::D

I also have a D-Link 530T so NIC works also.

I only have one problem left now, the mouse and keyboard. I'm using one of the those PS2 mouse and keyboard to USB converter like the one you have pictured in the guide. It was working when I first boot up Leopard. Now the mouse stopped working. The keyboard still works, but only works if I disconnect the mouse from the PS2 to USB converter. When both mouse and keyboard are plugged into the PS2 to USB converter, neither works. I'm guessing this is a USB problem, maybe its not receiving enough power. I do have a slightly under powered PSU, which I planning to replace soon. The converter works fine, I tested it in other computers.

Sorry Guys......

I tried to create the Boot 132 CD using Slimbuild Boot 132 ISO Creator from PCWIZ but I am not able to create the Boot 132 Iso file.

The problem is the iso is getting created but there are no kexts inside the intrid.img file.

If someone can try it at their end..... Use the kext from the initrd.img file which is inside Boot 132 files included in post # 1

hi robert, can i try with iatkos 10.5.4 ?

thanks in advance!!

i wonder same here..

Yes.... you can try iATKOS 10.5.4

I am not sure how to write a .dmg file..... You can try this forum

http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-32037.html

EDIT:

How to burn a .dmg file.....http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-32037.html

Also if you are trying to install MAC OS X Retail directly from the DVD (Keep in mind the following points)

1. you need to create a Bootable Boot 132 CD first instead of USB Bootable Drive, you can download it from here http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=113288

2. You need to boot from the Bootable Boot 132 CD first and then replace it with the MAC OS X Retail DVD.

3. You need to format the disk as GUID in which you will be installing MAC OS X ITS IMPORTANT.

Thanks for the reply Robert. So in your step 11 to boot OS X without USB, you're using your windows from your first HD to write the boot file into your 2nd HD MBR that goes to OS X right?

For those having problems booting from USB, be sure to check that your flash drive does not have U3 program installed. It may cause problems when booting. By the way, use the syslinux.exe -ma command, that makes the flash drive active without going into disk management and right click to make active. That didn't work for me either, but -ma did.

As for the retail install, after you install ideneb, you can connect an external HD and copy your retail os X in it (with windows to ntfs partition) and load the image off the HD, much faster install than DVD. After installing retail OSX, if you still want a DVD copy of OSX, theres a program called mactheripper that burns dmg.
