I have just bought a Dell Latitude D630 and I can NOT figure out how to get OS X installed on it, has anyone managed it, and if so, which distro did you use, I have tried iATKOS (v4i and v5i) iDeneb 10.5.5 and kallyway 10.5.1, I have the Intel wireless which I understand is not compatible, but I don't mind upgrading that. I would also like to know if the HSDPA and Bluetooth cards will work? and graphics, it has the Intel graphics too.

Thanks for all your help

Connor

I am also having problems getting my Dell Latitude D630 working. I've tried both iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5 & Kalyway_10.5.2_DVD_Intel_Amd to no avail. I've been actively searching through posts and trying different combinations of configurations and boot arguments but am still getting stuck at IOAPIC: Version 0x20 Vectors 0:23.

The D630 is listed in the HCL so apparently some people have gotten this to work.

If you haven't already, you might read through this thread. I'm still working my way through some of the ideas in there myself.

Cheers...

I am still getting stuck at IOAPIC: Version 0x20 Vectors 0:23.

I am getting stuck at the same bit, if anyone has ideas, please let me know, I have also seen some posts about changing bios settings? any ideas on that too, and if anyone would like more specs on the laptop I've got, I can easily post them

I have had success but it was not easy. I have been unable to use anything but iATKOS 4i and 5i. The first and biggest issue I have is even getting the installer to start. I get a kernel panic right when the screen turns gray and the apple logo appears. Any kind of switch does not seem to help. Some speculate that unplugging the AC and battery will clear some states and help but that has not helped me. Basically I have to re boot over and over and finally it will get past this KP and boot up. Once boot up you have to select the correct patches and then it will install and boot up fine. You wont have video, sound or ethernet or battery working but with the proper kexts you will have them all working fine. (Wireless does NOT work, but you can buy a DELL 1390/1490 wifi card on ebay and install it and it works out the box!)

I now have Mac OS X 10.5.5 on my D630 and it works great. Shutdown/Reboot do not work though.

I found one solution that works everytime in my D630. Whenever that error showed up on one of my many installations on the D630 it would repeat until I either unplugged the machine and removed it's battery (to completely remove whatever was corrupting the BIOS and/or cache/memory), or run the BIOS Diagnostic from the F12 screen. After that just remember to boot the installation DVD with -v.

Tried running through the BIOS diagnostics (F12) and pulling the battery with various BIOS options (AHCI vs ATA and dual vs disabled CPUs) on both install discs with '-v' and '-v cpus=2' but no joy.

I'm going to give iATKOS 5i a shot and will post results.

Have you kept trying? I have to do it like 20 times for it to eventually boot but it will boot.

I haven't been doing that - after each time it gets to the snag in the install I've rebooted and tinkered with settings. :D

So you would boot, hit F8, give the -v flag, let it run until it hangs, hit the power button to restart, hit F8, give the -v flag and repeat until it no longer hangs and proceeds with the install?

It looks like I am making progress by switching to iATKOS 5i. I enabled AHCI and dual cpus in the BIOS and the install took off without issue. (EDIT: In my original post I said that I passed cpus=2 to the bootloader - I was mistaken, I did not pass any arguments to the bootloader. cpus=2 will cause the installer to hang on my system) I successfully partitioned the HDD and completed the install but I suspect I made some mistakes with my custom options as I'm getting an error on reboot. I will play around with the custom settings today and see if I can get it to boot.

Connor - You might try iATKOS - it is the only one that has progressed this far on my Latitude D630.

I have to admit, this did not make any sense to me when I first read it. While trying to re-install with different options today, I consistently got an error telling me to reboot. I pulled the battery out and started just pulling the plug from the power mains to reboot and after a dozen reboots the installer began to work. WTF?

I tried iAtkos v5 with better results. But I was wandering if you could tell me which options you used in the iAtkos installer. And which graphics card you use, as that is the area I am having the most problem. I think my Dell is the Intel X3100. But I aint 100% sure

Exactly, over and over and it will eventually boot. You will know it is working as you will hear the DVD start to thrash and load once the apple logo comes up.

I tried iAtkos v5 with better results. But I was wandering if you could tell me which options you used in the iAtkos installer. And which graphics card you use, as that is the area I am having the most problem. I think my Dell is the Intel X3100. But I aint 100% sure

My latest attempt to install included the following options:

iATKOS v5i Main System

Bootloader

-OC EFI V9

X86 Patches

-Decrypters

--AppleDecrypt

-SMBIOS drivers

--SMBIOS-EFI

-ACPI

--Stock ACPI modified

-Disabler.kext

No other options/drivers were selected. I don't appear to be having video issues as you describe (black screen). The system will boot into the GUI but I get an error on boot. I've been trying different options for the past several hours but have not come up with a combination that will successfully boot.

After install if I pass the bootloader the '-v' flag I get this regarding AHCI:

Failed to load extension com.apple.driver.AppleAHCIPort

13AppleAHCIPort is not compatible with its superclass, 10IOAHCIPort superclass changed?

Failed to load extension com.apple.driver.AppleAHCIPort

13AppleAHCIPort is not compatible with its superclass, 10IOAHCIPort superclass changed?

And then I get:

ERROR: Firewire unable to determine security-mods; defaulting to full-secure.

Still waiting for root device

Without the '-v' flag I just get the graphical boot error:

I disabled Firewire and switched to ATA in the BIOS, reinstalled using the same settings but without any ACPI selection. On reboot the system appeared to start the GUI and the screen went black. I rebooted, passed the '-v' option and didn't immediately notice any errors but again the screen went black. I walked away from the computer for a half hour or so thinking that I would try again in a while. When I came back in, the graphical environment had started and had a graphical error message that read, "Before You Begin...There is no keyboard connected to your computer. Please connect your keyboard." I have a mouse pointer but am unable to move the mouse. I hit some keys but couldn't get anything further to happen.

Connor, when you get the black screen can you try leaving it alone for several minutes to see if you get something similar?

I switched to Kalyway 10.5.1 install media and am having much better results. I re-enabled AHCI, network, etc in the BIOS & the media boots and installs without issue.

Post-install, the system would hang like before but if I pass the boot loader the '-x' flag I could actually get into a semi-working OSX environment. (Albeit in "safe mode") I've posted the system.log here if anyone is interested.

Following the advice in this post, I removed AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext:

mv /Volumes/NameOfYourVolume/System/Library/Extenstions/AppleIntelGMAX3100.kext /tmp

The system now boots normally, USB & wireless are working, etc. Video resolution is pretty poor at the moment, I have no sound and I don't believe that the battery meter is functioning. I am now playing with the Dell Laptop Post-Installer trying to see if I can fix some of these issues but I understand that my video card isn't fully supported and I probably can't do much about the resolution.

I also realized that my BIOS was Rev A4 while Rev A12 is the current Rev available from Dell so I went ahead and upgraded my BIOS - though I don't see that it's had any significant impact at this point.

I will say that this install is a hit and miss. I have two Dell D630's and I have one working ok (used iATKOS 4i) on the second one have been playing with iATKOS v5i to see if I can get a better setup to use. I have tried dozens of times and I have been only able to get it to boot up and work once! I did make a DMG of that HD as a backup and have tried since then like 20 times and I cannot even get it to boot up once after the install (which does take forever to get to work in the first place!

Very frustrating... If you want I can upload my DMG of my system disk (like 3GB) for you to try and get a booting D630. I have the NVidia graphics chipset though...

Guys, set your BIOS SATA mode to IDE. Try that, it should prevent your problems. I'm running iDeneb v1.3 now. The IDE thing resolved everything for me. If no one has an sound, I recommend getting all of the drivers installed (yes I know that's stupid but it will work). As for the resolution.....sorry I got nothing. One more thing, if any of you happen to have the Intel PRO 100/VE Ethernet adapter, and you also used the ASUS driver along with installing IONetworkingFamily.kext, be carefull in installing one of the updates.......it's either MAC OS X UPDATE or something else. That will corrupt the driver and there is no way of fixing it, without a complete system re-install.

PS. Any further help needed, pm me.

Hope I helped,

ruller.

  • 2 weeks later...

For me iAtkos 5i worked well my D630. Like others, I saw the IOAPIC boot panic and to be honest I can't say I worked around it the same way each time I attempted install, however, I am fairly certain the cpus=2 trick on install boot works for me consistently.

I started out with iAtkos 2 and my daughter used Apple update and guess what, 10.5.6 wouldn't boot. She never listens. :D I had most everything working under 10.5.2, except for sleep, which in my crucial in my mind.

Under iAtkos 5i and 10.5.5 I have everything other than the battery meter working, so I'm pleased at this point. Sleep works and with lid close thanks to the Dell Post Installer, I have full resolution control and QE/CI thanks to Natit x3100, and sound works thanks to Taruga's patcher for ALCinject and the custom AppleHDA.kext you'll find in a thread on STAC 9205 (use the mfierrira85 package, it did the trick.) The Dell wireless 1390 works fine and I have the new Broadcom 57xx kext which is working for the ethernet port.

It's a sweet package overall. The only nits are the desktop does not initially appear (simple blue background, no icons) but that's resolved by changing resolutions to anything and back again. Sometimes it doesn't even occur on boot. I also miss the battery meter (funny thing is it works in the iAtkos 5i installer,) but my daughter can live without that.

leo4allv3final worked well on my d630 latitude dell laptop. everything worked with some added kext for sound and brodcomm 5755 network card.

still facing some problems for sleep and idle mode but the installation and work is smooth now.
