DrkTd
Wow, I didn't see any high PPC scores, so here's mine: CPU: 1.67 2 Gigs of RAM 17" Powerbook (You can check the Apple website for the rest of the info if you need it) Score: 137.2 http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/merge.xhtml?doc2=117132 (For Stats) I hope this helps for comparison. Sam0r
Now this is weird. I would've thought TPS would have the ideal kit for osx86. His score is 39.93. How does ZX81 get a 48.15 with almost half the cpu speed? I ran Xbench twice on a Mac Mini 1.4x at the Apple store last night and both times got 47.xx. Those Minis are perky little boxes and I would cobble together an x86 box if I thought it would be comparable. Maybe this question belongs in its own thread but are there advantages in 64-bit and/or Hyper-threading with osx86? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> OSX86 isn't compiled with 64bit compat. Also, some people report that disabling hyperthreading gives you a better xbench score. Not too sure about general performance though as I dont have a HT enabled CPU (its a 1.8ghz crudbox). know that i have to be extremely happy about managing it to run on a 1,8GHz machine well with only SSE2, i also have some problems... and to some problems i just found my own solutions (to one problem, to be specific). - touchpad works, tapping does not (i dont really need it, buttons work) - network card functioned right away - USB optical mouse works (wheel too but wheelbutton doesnt) - graphics: 1024x768 (i read some stuff about ATI cards but i am kinda overloaded right now to deal with it. anybody got a simple explanation?) - memory card reader (havent checked yet) - firewire (havent checked yet) - keyboard (works well.... but... the image is english, my keyboard is turkish. the choices in system preferences under keyboard dont have ''turkish notebook keyboard'' ) - wireless intel (i guess will never function, maybe i should get a usb wireles thing, what dou say?) one of the biggest problems was that DDing the image on to the drive took very long. My first trial was over a network. as i only have a notebook and no usb drive, i tried to installit using knoppix live cd connected to another xp machine via samba. of course the filesize limitation caused failure every time. after 4 nights in a row with no sleep, i gave up because i have to work and earn a living, too. then a good friend of mine gave me his usb drive and the party began. i tried the usual methods. started with knoppix and changed drive specs and partitions using cfdisk (after so many samba tries one starts to do it with closed eyes!!) and started the famous dd bs=1048576 command.... then i read one could also write bs=10M or even 1G ! i tried the latter but failed as i only have 512mb memory. so i stuck with 30M and let the notebook dd the image a complete night long (no {censored}! i left it at the office and it was finished when i got back the next morning. i left my office at 2 o'clock in the morning, by the way) then i started the system using -x and changed deadmoo's stuff and made my own and deleted his. feeling a little scared about deleting those ATI files, i tried to start my system a new and met this famous error message telling me i have to restart which i of course did and then applied MAXXUSS patch for SSE2>SSE3 and deleted the ATI files and all started making sense and fun all of a sudden. i read about a million posts about resizing the install partition... which i almost didnt understand at all...so what i did was to pop in my knoppix cd once again and call cfdisk and changed the file type of the remaining fortysomething GBs into AF which i then erased and made available using disk utility. at the moment the only two problems are ATI (because i like my 1280x800) and wireless. apart from that i have to admit i am very pleased with the general performance. all software works ! itunes, iphoto, iIdontknowwhat, etc...everything... most probably everything else i shall install shall function, too. one trick i came across while reading stuff on the internet : if you dont really really really need them : uninstall Dashboard and Spotlight as they slaughter your RAM real bad ! and if you dont feel fit about resizing the install partition, just do what i did and keep using it as a second disc (yes, it is automatically mounted and yes you can install your software on it, too) well this would be the happy end of my story... i would like to thank : Jake Tek Macindell for their precious help and suggestions while i was struggling with installation over network via samba (didnt work, sorry guys !). i would also like to thank : shizo joelogic for looking like as they would help but actually doing nothing but confusing a newbie. if anyone has an idea about how i could fix these mentioned two problems, i'd be more than all ears ! thank you all !
