JestaGeek
Hi harsvfx, just from looking at my scores and comparing them to others running on various subversions of Leopard, I think that could be your biggest issue; you still haven't updated your 10.5.1 to a more recent version and I can tell you that my system is noticeably faster with 10.5.3. My Sapphire Radeon HD2600XT should not be smoking your 8800GTS on the graphics part, but it looks like it is. And I've seen a number of other 8800 graphics cards on systems lower than 10.5.3 that aren't performing as well as mine, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's not part of it. I'd think that my graphics scores would be lower since my card is driving two monitors of decent resolution, but all I can say, as someone who never does "gaming" or other seriously graphics-intensive stuff, is I'm totally thrilled with the performance of this budget-priced card and fact that it's totally silent (a fanless model with a big heatsink) and draws very little power, so is really giving me good performance for the power consumption. My system, with four internal drives, two monitors, and several power-drawing USB devices is only drawing about 100w from the grid right now, while running multiple applications (it goes to about 130w when ripping video with HandBrake, which pretty well puts my dual-core processor at maximum load). That's not counting my actual monitor draw, btw, which might be about 60w more -- haven't checked yet. Anyway, I can't complain. Even my old Mac Mini didn't draw so much less power and to have the file storage I'd have to be running lots of external USB/Firewire cases, etc. Regarding your cores: It may be that this version of Xbench doesn't fully load all four cores, but you could try something else (maybe Geekbench) and or just see if all 4 cores are being used when you're using an app that is processor-intensive (e.g. look at the graphic depiction of the cores in the Activity Monitor -- Applications / Utilities -- while running an app like HandBrake... ) Anyway, if you want to see if it helps any, I'd try updating to 10.5.3 using any of the recommended methods for OSx86 and see if that helps things a bit. It is recommended, after all, for security reasons, etc. You may need to go to a bit of hassle to get everything (sound/graphics) all working right again, but it should deliver a noticeable performance boost for general usability. My box seems to start up much faster, too, since updating from 10.5.2, though I never actually timed it before. I never ran 10.5.1, but I've read people found it slowed down the start-up process they'd had with 10.5.1, so it might not be as noticeable for you. Hope any of that helps, but I wouldn't worry too much... I'm sure you're happy with your system when you aren't thinking about the lower-than-they-could-be numbers, right? Edit: Another thought. I suppose it should go without saying that we should run the test when our systems are as fresh as possible (no other apps running and taking up threads) I just ran it a couple times (with and without HD test) to see how it would compare with 50+ browser tabs open, Transmission seeding on about 10 torrents, and Mail, Preview, TextEdit and a few other processes running... and my score was about 20% lower (though the scores were much higher with the HDD part unchecked). So did you run it after starting up your system, with no other apps running, or were you maybe running lots of other threads? For some reason my scores look low compared to slower machines. Can someone tell me if it looks right. And how do I make sure all cores are working. JestaGeek
Gigabyte EP35-DS4, E8400 Core2Duo 3GHz 45nM processor, Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB GDDR3, 4GB RAM, 4 std 7200rpm HDDs (no RAID) -- more specs in signature. Well the disk could be a bit faster, but I'm happy with my Xbench score (204 with HD)... It was really just idle curiosity running Xbench. I wanted to make sure things were as they should be. I'm most surprised by the rather good performance of the graphics section, even compared to some of you who've posted results from systems with much more powerful display cards. The Quartz, OpenGL and User Interface Tests are all much better than I'd have expected from such a budget-end (although "silent" model card). And I've read that this particular card (Sapphire Radeon HD 2600 XT "Ultimate" 256MB GDDR3) doesn't perform quite as well as similar models from the same company, with the same chipset, etc, that do have a fan. I have a lot of apps active now, so it's not a good time for running a new test without the HD part (though just for the heck of it, I did -- and the score with the hard drive option checked was about 20% lower and without the HD was about 40-50% higher than the overall score below). When you consider I'm running a value-for-money, quiet, low-power-consumption (for a mid-tower) system, with only a few extra frills (the E8400 is a nice processor and it's certainly a luxury to have over 2TB of internal drive storage), I truly have nothing to complain about. I hope this system will be able to run the next couple generations of OS X without choking, that I'll have the restraint to be happy with the software that runs well on it, if not, and that if I want a power boost that that can come as simply as a bit more RAM or some other minor upgrade. For now, when I look in Activity Monitor, most of the time my use is barely a fraction of capacity if I'm not doing some heavy video processing or something. Cool! feckn_eejit
Just finished my build. Goals (in order): 1 - At least 500GB of redundant storage 2 - Extremely quiet 3 - Retail DVD for install, with as few modifications as possible - needed high compatibility, little fussing around 4 - Reasonable thermals 5 - Reasonable performance Ended up with: Intel Q6700 cooled by a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme with a Nexus "Real Quiet" 120mm fan Intel D975XBX2 nVidia 7300GT 256mb (obvious room for improvement, but this was free...) 2x2GB Corsair XMS2 DHX PC6400 1xWD VelociRaptor 300GB (Boot, Apps) 2XWD Caviar Blue 640GB (Data, in software Raid 1 array) Couple more Nexus fans and a very quiet Seasonic 650W power supply Installed Kalyway on a spare 120GB drive and used that as the "staging" area to install Chameleon EFI and Leopard, replaced a couple of kexts, patched the audio, and that's it. Even sleep works flawlessly. The end result is practically silent, and for the icing on the cake, the CPU is idling along at around 38°C, while the hard drives are at around 32°. Core temperatures struggle to break 55°C in my 25°C room with 100% load. Not super impressive but given that I'm barely pushing 30CFM through the heatsink, it's OK with me! Though it's not the latest and greatest, it is pretty darn zippy.
