Hello everyone!

I'm a complete newbie to Macs, let alone Hackintoshes so I need some advice about the path to take into Apple territory.

I'm a relatively accomplished system builder, having just completed a self-build Windows Home Server as well as a a Media PC.

My question is, would a Hackintosh built around a Shuttle KPC K45 barebones system work with a retail installation of Leopard (modified with drivers, kexts and whatnot) in FULL mode or am I better off getting a cheap second hand Mac Mini?

As you can probably tell, budget is a BIG factor...which is why I am considering the Hackintosh route in the first place.

What do you plan to use the machine for? The nice thing about the shuttle is you can quite easily toss in a 1.5TB hard drive (assuming your budget eventually allows for that). The Mac Mini is limitted to laptop hard drives, so you'll be VERY limitted on size, and the price will be higher by a long shot for that hard drive.

Thanks for your reply!

The mac is only intended for moderate use; built in applications - just to get the feel of a mac and some practice in using it. My main computers will continue to be Windows PCs.

If an Asus EEE Box can comfortably run Leopard, I would actually be more inclined to using that because of it's small form factor, low energy usage and the fact that many components are integrated.

Will it be a (relatively) painless installation? What do you think?

Yeah, if you don't plan to do CPU intensive things like encoding video, then the EEE box could be even better than the K45. It'll definitely use less power.

Yeah, the install should be fairly simple on either machine. I KNOW people are running it on the K45, so there's kind of a support group for that machine. I haven't seen a thread discussing running it on the Eee.

To be honest, living in the UK, I'm not prepared to pay the prices that Apple charge for Minis so unless I can get an exceptional deal on a slightly older model, I'm probably going to go with a Hackintosh.

Has anyone here had any success with Leopard on a EEE Box B202?

  • 3 weeks later...

travisbickle: I have recently bought an eee box b202 and I'm planning to get leopard running on it. But I want to do it with the boot-123 method, I like that one.

The trick is that I haven't found any readymade boot-cd for it (or the 1000h -wich is almost identical partswise) and I don't feel savvy or comfortable enough to do my own...

I've managed to install leopard on my dell mini 9 recently using the boot-123 method and I'm very happy with it! It's a really slick comp to have, the macbook nano apple should have done!

Anyways, If you hear anything about a boot-123 cd for it, let me know. I'll update on the process as soon as I get started!

Cheers!
