Dan the Man 2
I've been trying for a few days now to get a triple boot system going. I have Vista Home Premium running on my computer (first harddrive, first partition). I have Ubuntu 7.10 running (first hdd, third partition). Before attempting to add OS X, I would boot my computer, and GRUB would open. I had the options of Ubuntu, or Vista. Selecting ubuntu obviously booted that OS, but selecting vista would open up windows boot manager, where i could select vista, or recovery, or memory testing options. I acquired iATKOS 2.0i and installed it on the second partition of the first harddrive. To do this I formatted the partition with vista into fat32, then reformatted it with the iATKOS dvd. I at the end of the iATKOS install, it told me to reboot to finish the installation. When i rebooted, the system kicked me back to the normal GRUB - I couldn't get to my new Mac OS. I looked around and saw some people said to boot back into the DVD and I tried that, but to no avail. I also tried a few different attempts to make the partition active - through grub, mac terminal, and bcdedit. I also got the file chain0 from the iATKOS dvd and put it on my C: drive - thus far, that has not helped. I looked around some more and saw that there was a 'better' chain0, tboot. I put that too in my C: drive - still no success. Right now, I boot and see the GRUB menu. From there i can go ubuntu or vista. if i go vista, i now have an option for mac os x, or vista. When i choose this mac option, the screen goes black for about 3 seconds, then comes right back to the wbm. Suggestions on the web have been to hit F8 while the screen is black. When I do this, it brings me to the sub menu of vista list item. (as if i had just selected vista to begin with and pressed F8 in the wbm) I feel pretty stumped. I think that's a thorough recount of what i've done so far, but I may have left out a few steps here or here - i've tried quite a bit. Any help would be appreciated, Dan Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/133839-leopard-in-triple-boot-wont-boot/ Share on other sites

caenis
first, what are you using to boot, windows bootloader, darwin or grub? i had grub working and i could select all 3. with easybcd i could not add mac os and with darwin i could not start linux, so i used grub, i could probably helped with that... caenis
dan the man 2, i got my configuration running with vista hd 1 and linux and leopard on hd on guid (not mbr). i used linux's grub bootloader and linked the efi boot to grub to boot up leopard, its worked perfectly if you want suggestions, repost. Dan the Man 2
i got my configuration running with vista hd 1 and linux and leopard on hd on guid (not mbr). i used linux's grub bootloader and linked the efi boot to grub to boot up leopard, its worked perfectly if you want suggestions, repost. So i've been tinkering quite a bit. I had at one point vista bootloader as the primary, and then i guess two version of grub, one on the bootsector and the other in the MBR. I would start, get vista bootloader, and i could boot into windows, or grub (MBR), or grub (BS) or Mac (this didn't actually work, it just kicked me back to the vista bootloader. From the Grub menu (they were identical), I could boot to windows (back to the vista boot loader), to linux (this worked - ubuntu to be specific), or to mac. Selecting Mac would send me through the boot_v8 (i think this is the efi you mentioned) and bring me to darwin bootloader. I could press F8 (or "any key" ... i can't remember) and that would bring me to a prompt, and a choice of which OS to boot - i don't remember how linux or windows went, but the Leopard, booted in verbose mode, would bring me as far as a "Still waiting on root device" error, which would come up repeatedly. with no verbose mode, it would hang on the white screen with an apple and a little "do not enter" sign would come up (without the words though) I reinstalled Linux, and checked some of the other preferences - i found one that seems to be better support for SATA (btw, do i need any kernels other than the 'standard' install?) The leopard install completely wiped my MBR, so i had to use the vista install disk to 'fix' it. My newest problem, Leopard starts up, and then my display is all sorts of screwed up. It seems to randomly have troubles - either a light blue background wiht weird colours in the top left corner, or the entire screen is a checkerboard, that flashes to many different colours - very pretty, not very helpful. I found a driver when doing yet another install that says it supports "ATI HD 2xxx 3xxx" I have an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro vid card. I tried booting from my onboard video (yes, i changed it in the bios) but it did not like that at all Also, i think i forgot to mention that i use EasyBCD to edit my vista bootloader, it seems very convenient, and it seems to work very well (as compared to doing it by hand) Thanks, Dan Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/133839-leopard-in-triple-boot-wont-boot/#findComment-958575 Share on other sites
caenis
dan the man, ok, i believed that you were stuck with too many bootloaders at one time . First you have to chose which bootloader. Being on the same drive and using mbr, most bootloaders will work. What you need to do is get the operating systems working correctly and the installing them with the bootloader operating system being last. The reason that leopard's display is screwed is because of your video driver. Now, if you can start from scratch i would suggest repartitoning and get mac os x working perfectly since it is the one we struggle most with (driver wise). After that, linux and windows with wipe each others' bootloader so the one you want to use install LAST. I am using grub (linux) so after instalation, in terminal in linux type, sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst, then type your password. if done correctly and you installed windows BEFORE linux, linux should have an entry for windows (call longhorn loader or something similar). Copy that entry and past each, changing the name to Leopard and the root to correspond to the leopard partition. If you still have the same scheme as before and 1st windows, 2nd leopard, 3rd linux, your windows root should be (0,0) meaning 0 is first disk, 0 is first parition. So the leopard entry would be (0,1). Save and restart and select leopard. now if the darwin loader pops up, you will have to wait a few seconds so it loads leopard, if you press something you will have to chose. There is a plist.boot set around that will skip this waiting sequence. And when you boot vista if the bootloader for windows comes up, you did something wrong and start again where i said, install linux last. If you can, post your results.
