EBIOS read error : Controller or device error

Block 16432736 sectors 64

Burn the disk at 1x. If that doesn't work then use an iPC/iAtkos install and use terminal to open the osinstall.mpkg, point it to your hard drive you want to install then use munky's efi partition boot to put efi mod on the hard drive for your retail install. Its really easy. You will be fine then.

hmm...

I read that this error might be related to a bad install disk, but the disk boots up fine on my powermac...

does anyone have an idea what could be causing this error message?

boot in verbose mode -v and paste the log here..

i would assume that at a minimum you would need to run the voodoo 9.5 kernel and quite possibly remove several kexts - you are breaking new ground so you will have to research the forums and find out the exact specifications of your motherboard northbridge/southbridge, lan etc etc and see if there are kexts/solutions for your hardware.

us i7 users should be able to boot the new, retail, fully vanilla kernel with the 10.5.7 update. yay! netkas says it supports the new processors on his blog! netkas.org. he mentions it under the support for the new radeon gpus.

I am going to try the kalyway 10.5.2 , Do I have to put it on a DVD a specific way? Thanks

Grap the iatkos 10.5.5i disk....kalyway distro is solid, but old

You're probably using the latest version (4.6), as that one doesn't work for some reason.

Use the older one I have here.

I browsed through this thread with the same question in mind, and basically narrowed it down to gigabyte ud5 vs evga x58. In the end I went with evga x58.

w00000h!!!

New Mac Pro's with Nehalems and HD4870!!

Many problems possibly solved with 10.5.7? :D

Here's to hoping we can soon run Vanilla without too many problems!!

:)

edit: now that I've calmed down a bit... I'm not very experienced with running vanilla systems (well, except my iBook, but that's a bit different ;)), so I was wondering - what will Nehalem support mean? Vanilla kernel boot, I presume, but apart from that? I take it we'll still need extensions for the extra's (ps/2 goes without saying), but what about the standards? Chances for usb to still give problems (like in 10.5.6)?

Just wondering...

try the iATKOS disk, thats what i used for my install. it has the latest efi-v9 with an incorporated dsdt patch. i7 runs with the 9.5.0 kernel. if you get your hands on that disk i'll let you know what options to try. it also has that latest nvidia graphics update for the 9600's as well.

Jae-V,

Is there any way I could get you to tell me all the settings you did to get it running on your machine? I have an identical machine and I'd really like to get this running correctly. I'm a noob and I just wanna do it right the first time. I've tried several distros and the ideneb installs but I get a restart after it finishes. Please post the options to try so us EVGA X58 guys have some sort of answer.

I know it's too early to tell, but what are peoples guesses as fas as these mobos/CPUs working with OSX86?

Gigabyte has a couple of X58 mobos that have me salivating & the lowest-priced Core i7 will be about $350:

Hi Jae-V

Me too!

Update actually will improve the system performance.

Actually, I have done geekbench lately @3.6 OC, it was around 11,250.

Compare to early DD's system, it improved more than 700 points! I was surprised. Because DD's guide has been cosntantly updated, maybe that's why.

hey all,

i'd like to thank all of you who donated time/energy/wits to make this thing happen, i'm a proud mac core i7 user and i don't think i would've come this far without the reading all your posts.

aside from that, few things on general information:

-gigabyte mobo - if the lan dies on you that means you've used windows vista probably 64 bit and restarted to mac os, thus making the lan port hang on vista and being somewhat lost.

solution: shut down the computer from the back switch for 45 second without any electricity.

2nd solution: don't let visa restart to mac. preform a shutdown from vista and then start with mac.

if anyone wrote that already then my apologies.

-distribution disk: i've been researching a good distribution disk for a while and found you should either use ipc 10.5.6 or ideneb 1.4 (10.5.6) they both contain the voodoo kernel and all you'll need to add is the busratio flag on startup. both are good for a clean slate install...

more thanks: i'd like to thank digital dreamer and wolfienuke for the kext pack they uploaded for us gigabyte users.

really happy to be a part of this discussion.

Jimmy Urine

p.s did anyone try snow kitty with this new architecture?

Just turn your sata ports on ahci in the bios. Not ide or ide+ahci. Just put them all on ahci. When booting off the iatkos disk, hit f8 and flag busratio=20 cpus=1. System should boot up into the install now. Format your drive GUID, install the 9.5.0 kernel and leave everything else where it is. In the graphics portion only select the nvidia graphics update, leave the rest blank. You can generate your strings later after your done with the install. In networking select the realtek1000 and make sure you have jmicron checked in the sata drivers. Install, once system reboots just flag busratio=20 and you can complete the setup portion. Grab the files posted around the front in this thread and i'm sure you can sort the rest out from there....

What problems were you having, what do you mean by "restart" after it finishes lol?

well it I got it to go without turning on achi. I could leave it in ide mode and it would go through the install and everything however once it finished and rebooted when it went to load a second time it would just restart the machine. I entered in that flag and it continued past the restart so maybe I will make some progress now? I'm a noob so I'm really not sure about what I'm doing but what better way then getting into trouble, yeah? Anyhow I'm hell bent on getting this working at some point. I saw the new mac pros came out and are featuring i7's so its only a matter of time before we get pushed into the grace of vanilla kernels. :)

Just built a core i7 / GTX 285 rig and trying to get OSX on it, had Leo4all running on my late e8400/8800gts and it ran great.

I installed (went fine) iATKOS.5i.10.5.5 release and am freezing at the begining logo in the middle of it spinning up.

Heres my settings I used:

- Bootloader / PC EFI V9

- X86 Patches / Decrypters / AppleDecrypt

- X86 Patches / SMBIOS Drivers / SMBios Enablers / SMBios EFI

- X86 Patches / 9.5.0 Kernel Fassl

- X86 Patches / ACPI / Stock ACPI Modified

- X86 Patches / Disabler.kext

- X86 Patches / OHR

- Drivers / VGA / NVidia / NVKush

- Drivers / VGA / NVidia / EFI Strings For NVidia / 8xxx / 8400 GS 512 MB

- Drivers / System / SATA IDE / Intel AHCI Sata

- Drivers / Network / Realtek R1000

sorry but I hadn't needed to ask this yet. However when you say 9.5.0 kernel you mean voodoo or the second choice? Also by Nvidia graphics update do you mean the entire nvidia folder tab or do you mean the selection tab regarding 9xxx series cards? Sorry but I get half way in and I get this odd japanese language saying I need to reboot. I take it thats not good? Anyhow any extra details help. There are alot of varibles with this and its somewhat frustrating trying to get the guessing game right.

if you're trying to load it with the gtx285 then i understand why it stops.

inorder to continue from it you're going to need to force it to load in vesa mode for that card, i have the exact same card.

what you need to do is to disconnect that card, put your old one in, delete the following kext:

nvdaresman.kext

nvhal50.kext

nvkush.kext

-erase the efi string for that old card

switch back the card and afterward restart with -f and "Graphics Mode"="Your Resolution Choice"

and it'll load unless you're getting a problem from the kernel which is not likely.

restart with -v to see what's wrong with it...

oh yeah and if you do use voodoo kernel don't forget to use busratio=20 flag and the startup

also as i stated before you can use ideneb 1.4 (10.5.6 ) because it has the voodoo kernel.

tell me how it went.

@JaE-V

I was reading through the installation thread for the Asus P6T, and saw you had posted a few questions - which hadn't been answered. But I've also been led to think you're working on an EVGA... (you're sig perhaps? :thumbsup_anim:)

So, I was wondering - were those questions still valid, or have you let go of those?

@anyone

Furthermore, I've gotten a weird thing - for me at least. Just did a vanilla install (10.5) this morning before leaving home, and after a quite successful install (still no network or sound, but that'll be okay), I tried patching my DSDT... But I couldn't run the script? I got a permission denied error, even when logged in as root. Anyone recognize this / have a solution? I had to do a manual user creation because of the "transfer data from another mac"-loop, and I thought that might be the cause, but I'm far from sure.. And I think I might enjoy a custom DSDT for an updated system..

(yes, I used the dot-slash in front; also - tabbing didn't fill in the file name as it usually does... and double-clicking from within Finder didn't work either)
