Thanks MAJ, I'll try them out. I've tried at least 6 others so far, but those ones don't look familiar.

Question: Should I delete ALCInject.kext if I'm using HDAEnabler, and vice-versa? Also, are the files AppleAzaliaAudio.kext and Apple02Audio.kext required or are they left-overs from previous attempts?

LATER: I've tried all three of the options you pointed me to, but without success. But I've now got both HDAEnabler and ALCInject in the extensions folder, along with the modified AppleHDA. A clear list of required audio extensions would be nice. I can check my MacBookPro, but it's running Tiger, and I think the extension configuration is a bit different.

you need to delete one of the two as far as im aware, and with hdaenabler you need to remove appleazaliaaudio too.

Anybody with Snow?

Hi Guys...

I'm really curious about anybody had a success with installing Snow Leopard on i7 system.

I have had pretty good success installing Kalyway 10.5.2 on my GA-EX58-UD4P, but no audio, despite trying several kexts. The system profiler shows 0 processors and 4 cores. Can anyone confirm that all for cores are really being used? Also is there a more recent distro or reliable way to update to 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 that is mostly issue free? Thanks!

i think, just because i want to get this working ill go for usb. any idea why i cant use the full set of kexts from the script?

gigabyte users, what settings do you have in the bios? I have the first option in integrated peripherals set to ahci and thats it..... anything else i need to change?

failing that, which of the legacy kexts is meant to remove the orange drives?

Based on my experience with the EX58-DS4, yes, all cores are being used. Check your Geekbench score. Also, prime95 knows that it should run 8 threads for doing its torture tests.

The audio is another matter. There seems to be a lack of success here in getting the ALC888 to work on this line of boards. I've been trying for several days - at least 10-12 different 888 versions of AppleHDA, but none of them even get as far as being recognized buy the OS.

re: Gigabyte EX58-DS4 - lack of audio :

There is no device indicated in the the Sound Control Panel, so I'm wondering if the ALC888 problem might be as simple as an incorrect identifier in the modified drivers? Evidently the OS doesn't match up the information it receives from querying the chip with the device_id embedded in the driver.

I'll look into Intel's HDA specification regarding chip 'discovery' by the OS. In the meantime, perhaps someone who understands the HDA startup procedure could comment?

Only the HDAEnabler should be used with the modified AppleHDA.kext in that package. All other audio injectors should be removed. Apple02Audio.kext is part of the vanilla install, so keep it. I typically label the modified kexts with a color, so I know they are modified. It's also to distinguish one version from another.

Can't think of anything off hand that you'd need to enable/disabled that hasn't already been done.

If you're using the legacy kexts for the EFI partition boot, the LegacyIOAHCIBlockStorage.kext turns off the orange icons (sets the drives as "internal"). If you are using the Boot-132 standard retail install, the IOAHCIFamily.kext (which contains the IOAHCIBlockStorage.kext) controls the drive icons.

thanks for the help MAJ, but this has been the worst hackintosh i have ever owned/built! it has now decided to completely stop working..... i cant get it to work no matter what! ill double/triple check my steps to make sure i dont post and make an ass of myself when somebody says "is X and Y set in the bios". My current situation is: No boot from efi partition. it fails on several different errors depending on whether i boot with -x flag, -f flag, removing efi strings, removing dmsl etc etc. I can boot with the 123 cd. I really dont understand this system, it seems to have no consistency, and what fixes it one time, will not work the next! I have re-installed leopard around 20 times in the last 3 days, none of them have worked, and i am sure i have done nothing different to the times before when it worked fine (apart from the W@nk excuse for LAN)

EDIT:

After checking my steps, i am sure im doing nothing different than before.

At the minute, my normal boot (with -v flag) stops at ntpdate[75]: no servers can be used, exiting

It can also stop at /usr/sbin/ocspd[74]: starting

Or stop at mDNSResponder[32]: SetDomainSecrets: mDNSKeychainGetSecrets failed error 0 CFArrayRef 00000000

I had this error and it was from incorrect drivers. I am sure if you look very carefully at your kext collection you will find the solution. Use EFI Boot Partition, the easiest method by far.

getting ALC888 to work on DS4 was a pita and took me weeks, but i found the kexts that will get all outputs and inputs working.

enjoy, and please let me know if it doesn't work as i may have zipped the wrong ones!

Thanks, Fiat, those work great!

I've checked only outputs so far, but the following all seem to be OK:

EX58-DS4 w/OSX 10.5.2 (installed via Kalyway)

Internal Speaker - OK, but appears on back panel

Digital out - OK

Headphone out - OK

The only thing that threw me a bit was that "Line Out" doesn't send the signal to the back panel as expected, but ""Internal Speaker" does.

So how did you do it? I've tried at least a dozen kexts and made at least that many more myself without even getting one to show up in Preferences.

bios:

A couple of posts backs in this thread you can see my bios settings, its a zip with photos...

efi-boot:

munky method:

don't use the mkext, don't run the script:

only use the least number of kexts!

dsmos.kext/appledecrypt.kext on efi partition. /System/Booter/Extensions instead of /Extensions

Voodoo kernel and other kexts in te normal SLE. no other kexts are needed! if i'm not mistaken

you patch video, lan, sound, shutdown restart etc later...

but first make it boot right

Hey y'all; been away for some time... I see a lot has happened in this topic since :)

I must second the question about Snow... It actually took me days to get my hands on the bèta (I've got both 190 and 222), then cost me a few dual layer discs burning them (seems Toast 10 has major problems with that... I mean - buffer underrun on a modern burner? Suuuuuure... Disk Utility on the other hand worked perfectly). Installing it didn't really work using the 'standard' boot-132 method either :)

I installed it on a Mac Pro to my own disk (which went fine by the way, system ran smooth too!), then took the disk and put it back in my own case, tried booting - and of course nothing... So if anyone got it running - how? :P

According to Netkas (netkas.org/?p=81), Snow should have i7's working native... Sound any good? :P

Well, patience is still a virtue... I guess we'll have to work on that one :)

I've now had some time to inspect the audio output of the DS4 a little more carefully and determined that there is something wrong, or at least, less than optimal. Using the 'Internal Speaker" option, which is the only one which sends a signal to the back panel connectors, there is a definite weakness in the bass (about -10 db at 100 hz). It drops off about the same at 10 khz. These are significant. This output also starts distorting severely when the signal rises above about -12db. I suspect that the "Internal Speaker" pathway has some shelving filters on it to eq the signal for a tiny builtin computer speaker.

The headphone output is actually flatter in frequency response, and doesn't distort, but has a lot more noise.

The digital output works fine, and using the D-A converters in my 20 year-old Panasonic DAT machine sounds fantastic. I guess this is what I'll have to use. It sounds way better than my $200 Tascam USB audio card.

The question then becomes - what happened to the Line Out pathway? I suspect that this is the one pathway that would have a flat frequency response and not be prone to distortion and noise. Unfortunately, when I select that option from the list in System preferences, no signal appears at any of the various audio jacks.

I believe that there is some mixup in the details of this driver. Does anyone know enough about HDA audio drivers to suggest a fix?

thanks

I found this fix on another thread which I applied to the problem on the HDA.kext for the DS4. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=127877

Attached are the patched kexts that fix the problem with weak bass and distortion. These are modified from the ones that Fiat sent earlier today.

From my reading what i think you would do is install efi v9 on an properly formatted drive using that installer packgage. Then install snow(190) on the drive. Remove the RTC kext, install dsmos.kext, disabler, and applesmbiosefi.kext. That should get you able to load in safe mode, then you should be able to generate strings for your video hardware. :(

Nice fix bgd, i didn't notice the sounds issues on my computer - but then again I'm no audiophile..

Finding a kext that worked took a lot of trial and error - i was going through the process of re-mapping the pins but I glazed over as it started to get too complicated for me....

Fortunately I stumbled upon these kexts and it fixed it...

Well, I think I'll try that over the weekend :) i just hope it works with 222 as well (presume it should), as 190 doesn't incorporate the HD4xxx drivers (as far as I've read into it). Now I'll just hope your  isn't too sarcastic... ;)

News to follow, I hope...

PS: /From your reading/... Where did you read it, if I may be so bold?

hey all in this thread...

i have just given up after 2 weeks of trying to get osx 10.5.6 retail on my asus p6t deluxe with 9600gt graphics card... had so many problems and going to have a break... from non working graphics to being useless at getting the ef boot partition working... i did manage to get 8 cores though!!!

how do you all feel that the future of being able to have os x on this type of setup??? how is the new chameleon going to help??? seems dd install is far simpler and more successful than the one for my motherboard...

In the mean time, I'll be looking around myself; and trying different 'classical' methods.

Just saw mention of a new version too (10A261), but I'll try getting it running at all first :thumbsup_anim:

[edit] Just found a small amount of posts about PC_EFI working with 190, and not with 222...

I'll have to figure out one or two things, but at least I now know it's indeed possible :D

Thank you!![/edit]

try the iATKOS disk, thats what i used for my install. it has the latest efi-v9 with an incorporated dsdt patch. i7 runs with the 9.5.0 kernel. if you get your hands on that disk i'll let you know what options to try. it also has that latest nvidia graphics update for the 9600's as well.

Hey, ѕӎѳѳ,

I went through the same thing a couple of times. No matter what I did, no progress would be made. Like you said, it wasn't consistent. Behaviors would, at times, be the opposite of what I was expecting. Reinstall from scratch, reinstall again. I'm thinking to myself, "What am I doing wrong? What am I doing differently?"

The only way I managed to make any progress was when I downloaded the scripts/kexts from the forums again and used those, even though they were supposed to be the exact same files I already was working with. After that, it worked. This has happened twice for me and I can't explain what was the cause for the problem.

Apparently, something happened to the installer files - no clue what or how. :P

Hope it works out for you.

regards,

MAJ

Chris - Are you using the same setup? (Details in my signature).

Does the driver show up in System Preferences? (You should see a list of outputs as "Internal Speakers", "Headphones" etc. Likewise a list of inputs beginning with "Internal Microphone")
