Upcoming Intel X58 Mobos & Core i7 CPUs

i would definitely like to see a dedicated GA-EX58 guide thread. I'm sure many others would appreciate it too-preferably documenting the EFI install method from scratch

I think I will be switching my intel x58so mb in for a GA-EX58 because of the major success on here. Has been kind of a pain trying to get my board going. Finally got the network drivers going, but I couldn't get a retail install to go. So I would really like to see a dedicated thread as well.

I was also trying to run the vanilla kernel on the board and it would always freeze at the apple screen.

Would hate to see you give up that Intel mobo. ;) Personally, I'd like someone to blaze the new trail in getting that board working. Eventually, someone's going to get there and you're almost there. But, that's going to take some more work and perseverance. Just think, you could figure it all out and have your own tutorial and thread! :P On the other hand, I do like the Gigabyte board much better, as it doesn't have the limited RAM slots and has a great reputation wrt OSx86.

No one that I know of has ever gotten a vanilla kernel running on the Core i7 - I don't think it's possible. Perhaps, you mean a vanilla install using the EFI partition boot method? Typing "-v" at the Darwin prompt at boot time (or including that flag in the boot.plist) will help troubleshoot the booting process.

MAJ

@ digital_dreamer,

What method do you now use to install OS X before running the EFI script?

Do you use your own Boot 132, install, update then run the EFI script? I'm about to order my board etc and just want to be clear in my head the best method to install.

thanks

I started out with the Kalyway distro (10.5.2 with 9.2.2 kernel). It is was the simplest and easiest to install, not to mention the most popular. All it takes is a few simple selections and you're up and running with everything working. From there, I did the Boot-132 method on another drive. Now, I have the EFI partition boot setup with 10.5.6, but I still have the Kalyway install for occasional maintenance (you'll need it!). Can't beat the simplicity and flexibility.

I've been able to run wolfienuke's script on the live OS X install without any issues, so currently the Kalyway install isn't being used as much as before.

Thanks digital_dreamer,

So, if I understand correctly this is (broadly) the procedure you have used with success.

Drive 1: Retail

Drive 2 : Kalyway

  1. Boot Kalyway
  2. Partition Retail Drive GUID
  3. Install OS X using cd /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages
  4. Update with Combo Updater
  5. Run wolfienuke's EFI script
  6. cross fingers and reboot

Apologies if this is obvious, but is there a clear explanation somewhere for the "Boot-132 method"?

I have done Kalyway, iatkos and iPC-OSX installs succesfully on Gigabyte hardware, but I'm not familiar with Boot-132.

thanks

Yep, you got it. This method is the most straightforward and simplest. After installing the retail packages, the EFI script only takes a few seconds and then you reboot. The only variable that makes this method not consistent across multiple installs is the user's choice of graphics card, but that's the same issue you'll run into regardless of what install method you use. Proper setup of the BIOS is a given. Given that the on-board LAN and audio is the same, you're basically guaranteed to be up and running without a hitch if you use a common graphics card.

bgd,

The Boot-132 method entails using your Mac OS X Retail DVD and a small bootloader (PC-EFIv9) that's typically installed by means of a script - no distro needed like Kalyway, iatkos, iPC-OSX, etc. This offers more flexibility in your choice of what's installed. It's typically a vanilla install with a handful of kexts removed or replaced for full functionality. See these threads for further information: Retail DVD Guide and New modified BOOT-132 allows you to boot retail DVDs, Use Mac OS X Retail DVD on hackintoshes!

The Boot from EFI partition method is basically a extension to Boot-132, where it copies the modified kexts to a separate partition (EFI), leaving your vanilla Retail DVD install untouched on your main drive. This method allows you to run Apple's Software Update without any problems whatsoever. If, however, you do not have a extra drive or partition, this method is rather tricky. But, there are numerous solutions to that issue, as well.

Cool thanks for taking the time to reply MAJ,

I have a few more questions and it'd be great if you (or anyone else with this board) could help out...

  1. I have a 8600GTS GFX card. This should be covered by the NVinject/Natit kexts in wolfienuke's EFI script?
  2. I know it's probably a hassle but are you able to share your BIOS settings with me?
  3. Should I install with the f3 BIOS or update to f4 before - I notice the DSDT patch is for f3 in EFI script - does this matter?
  4. I'm just wondering as an alternative to the above method of installing OS X from a Kalyway drive, do you think I would be able to make a Boot CD using the kexts from the EFI script and slimbuild app?
  5. Is there anything in the EFI script that needs updating or replacing since the script was made. V3 seems to be the latest and wolf seem pretty hot on keeping it up to date but was worth asking.
  6. Have you made any progress on the virtualization issue or is that with the voodoo gang?

Cheers for your input - I'm just about to press the order button for my parts so all your help really appreciated.

Cosmin Petre,

I was not able to do:

Install OS X using cd /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages

But what did work was using Instahackintosh and install with that method. Dont know why the first method didn't work but Instahackintosh is a great tool and you will find ease with it. Just dont install a bootloader and you will be fine!

Hey Digital,

I don't know if you have posted it before but do you have a picture or a list of your bios settings for the Gigabyte board, I picked it up today and I find this searching on this site to be near impossible. If some one else posted them up that would also help, thanks a lot.

Hi,

I posted bios pictures a couple pages earlier:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?act...amp;pid=1037838

Just skip the overclocking part, but do check the cpu features!

c1e virtualitsation etc

good luck

It's just my case with GA-EX58-UD5;

1. 8xxx/9xxx GFX cards should be supported by NVinject. (AFAIK, Natit is mainly for ATI cards.) If it doesn't work, use EFI string and Nvidia 9 Series Driver Installer v2.

3. In my case, I updated to F4 BIOS AFTER I installed OSx86 10.5.6 with EFI Partition Boot Installer v3. There was no problem while updating process. Make sure reload the optimal settings after updating, and set AHCI and something else again.

5. I replaced (Very very thank you for digital dreamer):

a) IONetworkingFamily.kext to use Time Machine feature, an exchange of DHCP function.

B)mach_kernel.voodoo and System.kext with newer version 9.6.0, and removed 10.5.5 version of seatbelt.kext. It resolves mounting USB drives problem.

Thanks artice - really useful info. I appreciate the response.

So I should just swap the kernel and kexts in the v3 EFI script Extensions folder and remove seatbelt.kext

Are you using NVInject and did you remove Natit?

Did you install from a Kalyway/iAtkos type install drive?

Thanks everyone for the fantastic help. I can't wait to started.

I use EFI string, so I removed NVInject, NVkush and Natit from Extensions folder.

I don't know why the injectors couldn't handle CI/QE for my graphics (9800 GT). EFI string works fine.

I installed a Kalyway 10.5.2 at first, and invoked the retail OSInstall.mpkg from Terminal on that:

$ open "/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg"

The reasons (and expectations) why I installed Kalyway are:

  • Sometimes I have to use the Kalyway after successful installation, when I made mistakes on the main retail installation.
  • I don't want to break out my main volume, so I want to test something on easy-to-reinstall volume before applying it to main installation.
  • I may be able to reuse the same HDD as Kalyway for Time Machine volume, so I don't waste the whole 500G-1TB drive just for safe guard.

Hope your success!

i tried using those settings and was not able to get iatkos 5i going. It would install but then after reboot it would stall at the apple logo after trying to load for a little. Is there something I need to type in after the boot?

Use a retail leopard leopard install!

not a undocumented 'distro', than you never know what patches have been applied.

you can try typing:

-v

or

mach_kernel.voodoo busratio=xx -v

-f to force the load of some kexts that did load on the dvd, but not the installed one

So I've browsed almost *all* of the pages in this thread, and I was just wondering, which board is better for OSX86

The GA-EX58-UD5, or the ASUS P6T Deluxe?

My Research:

GA-EX58-UD5

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...2960&st=620

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...960&st=160#

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...p;#entry1001989

Asus P6T Deluxe

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...p;#entry1044743

I have both boards, i just need to know which one is the better board to install on, meaning updates (big one) compatability, problems arising etc etc. Mainly problems with board, because with Graphics you never know. What problems have occured in the GA-EX58-UD5? ASUS P6T Deluxe?

I don't know which is better, but at least I can say I've got very minor problems with GA-EX58-UD5:

  1. "About This Mac..." reports my memory bus speed is 400 MHz, while System Profiler says 533 MHz with DDR3-1333 modules.
  2. VMware Fusion doesn't want to run on my HackPro :thumbsup_anim:
  3. DHCP doesn't work. (I don't use it though.)
  4. busratio=20 is required for bootloader flag.
  5. Several problems have been found on each Software Update. For instance, after 10.5.6 Combo update, KP occurs when I open huge dmg files. However, with EFI boot method, it is very easy to fix if you have "kextstat" file, backup old Extensions folder and alternative installation such as Kalyway. I think this process is always required for every distros/methods; the difference is which is easier to fix them.
  6. Digital dreamer and WolfieNuke are with GA-EX58-UD5. Those guys are stunning like Steves. :)

Is it possible to resolve this? Does the kext you posted from digital_dreamer not fix this?

Did you just add this to your boot plist?

I don't really understand this... I thought kextstat was a unix command not a file!? Can you explain more?

Thanks again everyone for your input

Nah, it would light up for about a half a second then turn right back off. I was aware of all the mem issues and they were all if you got memory faster than the 1333. Tried all slot combinations and everything else known to man as well lol. I'm a full time pc tech so troubleshooting is my forte. Its ok, the board was open box so i was taking a risk anyway. Will be purchasing the evga x58 board once my return clears.

Who recommended the board to him?!.... Oh wait..... :D

lol, On the serious side, newegg is pretty well known (or not well-known, either or ) for sending out broken hardware on open box orders; they get a 15% restocking fee if you want a refund, plus shipping. I know for a fact that my mobo works perfectly.... I guess it's just a {censored} shoot when it comes to buying MSI :P After reading reviews about my board, I was edgy.... either way, I'm NEVER buying first line products!

The original kext comes from WolfieNuke's installer v3 has no problem with DHCP, but Time Machine doesn't work. (At least on my set up.)

The kext from digital_dreamer fix this TM problem; however, DHCP doesn't work.

I don't know how to use both TM and DHCP.

busratio:

Yes, just add to Kernel Flags in com.apple.boot.plist. (Installer should add it by default.)

kextstat:

Yes, it is a command not a file. I mean, "the output of" kextstat command. Sorry confusing.

Before update, copy /S/L/E to somewhere, and do $ kextstat > kextstat-10.5.6.txt

After update, and it break your system out, check the versions in Extensions folder.

I use the script attached in this post, to list all the versions in the specific folder.

(Almost all the part is written by WolfieNuke. I just copied necessary part from install.sh.)

kextver.zip
