DAW - based on GA-EP45 incl. hardware list

EDIT for Snow Leo

 

Because not too many changes happened since I wrote this guide, I didn´t maintain it that much.

Now with Snow Leo I have to

 

 

the hardware list is imho still up to date, if you are using this board. this small guide is still based on a second Leo install on your system.

 

for SL :

 

 

*I won´t provide detailed information for every step, because those informations are available already in this forum.

1. show some respect and buy the the upgrade version.

 

2.*create a dsdt.aml - I prefer to use *koalala´s acpi patcher and to create it from the original bios.

bios version 10a beta is available, booting much faster with ahci version 1.2 included.

 

3. *download iaslme and drop the created dsdt.aml on the iaslme icon. it will be decompiled to a new dsdt.dsl.

4. open the dsdt.dsl in text editor and apply the *cmos reset fix manually - save to a new folder.

5. drag the new dsdt.dsl again on the iaslme icon - a new dsdt.aml will be compiled

5. test the dsdt.aml on your working system (AppleIntelCpu kext should be loaded without any disablers).

6. get *chameleon RC3 and chameleon RC2

7. download *Tinkertool and install

8. start Tinkertool, check show hidden files and apply.

9. now boot the SL upgrade DVD

10. in SL DVD go to System>installation>packages

11. start osinstall.mpkg and choose the drive to Install SL. uncheck the printer drivers, otherwise installation will fail.

12. install should be done in 30 minutes - don´t boot

13. install *chameleon RC2 on the new SL drive.

14. when done go to SL root and delete the "boot" file

15. copy the "boot" file from *chameleonRC3>i386 to SL root.

16. copy the working dsdt.aml to SL/ Extra

17. replace the kexts in SL/Extra/Extensions with the attached files

18. now boot into SL with options -v arch=i386

19. edit your UUID as described in this post /step13

20. for graphics you can still use your previous boot plist

21. if it´s not possible to repair disk permission in SL, boot the SL DVD again (set show hidden files with Tinkertool) and reinstall the BSD.pkg from the DVD.

for a DAW I would suggest still to stay with 32 bit for better compability with au plugins.

if you are still using any pci cards for sound or UAD´s you should patch the dsdt.aml without the new hpet version - otherwise your pci cards won´t be recognized in the system.

 

UAD cards still don´t have a 64bit driver - therefore you should also set arch=i386 flag in your boot.plist to make them work. the attached dsdt.aml is compiled without hpet option! you can try it, but not sure if it will work on your system.

After responding to(o) many questions about building a DAW, I decided to write this guide.

If there are any mistakes, please excuse my English . it´s my third language

 

The goal is to build a perfect machine for a reasonable price and to include a reliable backup strategy. The selection of the parts is based on personal experiences.

I tried to write this guide as simple as possible to make it also understandable for all newbies.

All informations you need are in this guide. I won´t respond to any unnecessary questions.

for all newbies: you can´t start a hackintosh project without any knowledge.

always search before you ask - you can find yourself a solution!

 

Although this guide works almost without terminal - get familiar with it. that´s important!

I started myself building my first hackintosh in 2007 and did find all the informations in this forum. I´ve learned a lot by reading (not by asking) from innovative guys like pcwiz, aquamac, netkas, karaakeha1 and macgirl (to name a few).This is a way I´m trying to give something back to the community and to say

this mainboard offers 6 s-ata and two firewire ports. The firewire chip is from texas instruments .This seems to be an important premise for connecting audio devices without troubles. The DS3R is also a good option but offers only one firewire port. The additional raid option is useless on a hackintosh.

 

CPU

 

Intel Quad 6600

 

imho on a daw this CPU gives the best performance for the money

 

 

RAM

 

4 GB A-Data Vitesta800

 

After testing a few brands I was surprised how stable this memory is for that money.

GRAPHICS

 

Asus 7300GT 256MB Silent

 

For the work with Logic or other audio apps a 7300GT is enough. This card is known to work out of the box and silent.

 

CPU COOLER

 

Arctic Freezer Pro7

 

After testing a few brands like Asus,Zalman,Tacens and Thermaltake I must say that this cooler is silent and inexpensive. For that value it has a very good performance

 

HD´s

 

1 x WD 800AAJS 80GB

for the small "maintenance" leo install. this one you could replace with any spare s-ata disk you already have.

 

1x WD 5000AAKS 500GB

for your data and projects in logic and so on......

 

3x WD 2500AAKS 250GB

one for your main leo install , two for a 500GB softraid for samples. A softraid for the "samples" disk shortens the loading time for samples and makes really sense. more raid configurations are luxury and a question of available ports. Of course you could decide to take disks with more capacity.The WD AAKS disks are meanwhile my first choice. They are really fast and inexpensive.

assuming that I don´t have to explain how to build this machine, now we proceed to the install.

a retail leo disk. Show some respect: buy it and support Apple

a kalyway 10.5.1 disk - you know where to find.

The 10.5.1 kaly was the only install that started immediately without any problems on my EP45.

If possible a kalyway 10.4.10 disk (later on you will read if you need it or not)

a usb stick.

Copy all files to your usb-stick

 

you might ask why kexthelper, because this function is already included in Osx86tools.

First reason is that for some reason the in osx86tools included kext installer doesn´t work always as it should. Second reason is that newbies could learn some scripts from kexthelper, which are not too complicated. just choose the "advanced" instead the"easy install" option.

On the other hand the osx86tools kext installer allows you to install on different drives.

 

STEP 1 _{- installing a small leo for maintenance, preparing the system}

 

Boot into bios and switch to ahci.

 

Boot the kalyway disk. Format with disk utility >

 

1.the 80GB disk with guid and two partitions - one with 10 GB for small leo and the rest for some backups. name it "LeoX" and "Backups"

 

2.the 500GB disk with guid and one partition. Name it "Data"

 

3.one 250GB disk for main leo install. Name it "MacHD"

 

4.create a 500GB softraid with the other two 250GB disks. Name it "Samples"

 

the names are just proposals that should help us to identify the disks later on.

 

important: don´t try to use this guide to do the same thing partitioning only one disk! you need to have one disk with one partition for

the retail install, one disk for music and leoX at least! you could save some money abstaining from the software raid - but that´s it. also it destroys the idea of a perfect backup strategy and therefore makes this guide obsolete! in future I won´t help anybody having problems based on partitions!

 

Quit disk utility and proceed to the install options. Select the "LeoX"

Now you will find at the lower left corner the "customize" button.

 

Choose "Vanilla Kernel",NATIT_gfnvidia or NVINJECT_gfnvidia_desktop.

Leave the rest as it is and install.

 

On reboot now you should have a working leo 10.5.1. with an ugly desktop and orange icons

 

STEP 2 _{- installing the retail disk}

 

now mount the OS X retail install disk

open terminal - in terminal write

 

cd /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages - enter

don´t forget the space after every backslash

open osinstall.mpkg - enter

 

now the installer should appear

proceed and select the "MacHD"for installation

 

install should be done in 5-6 minutes. of course you could also install with boot-132, but imho this method is very comfortable and much faster.

 

 

STEP 3 _{- making it bootable}

 

_{if you´re going to install on a bootable softraid, at this point you have to edit first the com.apple.boot.plist on MacHD instructions here}

 

go to system in the dock,choose mouse options and set right button to "secondary mouse button"

 

copy the OSx86tool from your usb-stick to the desktop. The new version of Osx86tools is fantastic. EFI and Fdisk are working automatic!

 

A. open Osx86tools and click on Install EFI/Run Fdisk

 

select "MacHD"

 

very important: now go to desktop. right click on "MacHD" and choose "eject".

 

Now execute fdisk in OSx86tools

 

B. back to OSx86tools

 

select "MacHD"

 

go to desktop. right click on "MacHD" and choose "eject" again.

 

execute EFI / Chameleon* in OSx86tools

 

*If you would like to install on a bootable softraid choose "Chameleon"

 

some problems appeared using OSx86tools. here is the manual procedure

 

download EFI from here

copy pc_efi_v80 to the root of LeoX

 

open terminal and write

 

 

diskutil list (this will list the disks and partitions)

 

diskutil unmount diskXsY

 

fdisk -e /dev/rdiskX (choose MacHD X= number of disk)

 

update

 

f y (y=number of partition,don´t choose EFI - usually it´s 2)

 

w (means write)

 

q (means quit)

 

 

 

 

diskutil list (check the name of LeoX)

 

cd /Volumes/LeoX/pc_efi_v8

 

diskutil unmount diskXsy (define the correct disk)

 

./startupfiletool /dev/rdiskXsY ./boot_v8

dd if=./guid/boot1h of=/dev/rdiskXsY bs=512 count=1

dd if=./guid/boot0 of=/dev/diskX bs=400 count=1

 

a good choice now is also the pcefi_v9 installer from here

STEP 4 _{- patches}

 

go to MacHD/System/Library/Extensions and delete AppleIntelCpuPowermanagment.kext and AppleEfiRuntime.kext

 

copy dsmos.kext (disables some other funky kext - you know )

from your USB stick to the desktop.install the kext using Osx86 tools to MacHD.

 

now boot into MacHD - you will have a bad resolution, but we will solve this soon

 

if you have the spinning wheel with the apple here: the dmos.kext wasn´t installed properly. go back to LeoX and rightclick on the MacHD - choose "information". if "ignore users" is checked, uncheck it and install dsmos.kext once more. this might be also sometimes the problem with

OSx86 tools and EFI/Fdisk.

 

copy all files from your usb stick to the desktop. open kexthelper and drag and drop this kexts to kexthelper.

 

IntelcpuMdisabler.kext ( disables the AppleIntelCpuPowermanagment.kext for future updates)

openhaltrestart.kext ( enables restart and shutdown - thanks to psystar)

HDAenabler.kext and AppleHDA.kext (patch for ALC889 audio)

AppleAHCIPort.kext and IOAHCIFamily.kext (patch to recognize the ich10R)

IOStorageFamily.kext (patch to get rid of the orange icons)

don´t installSMBIOResolver.kext yet ! (corrects the informations in systemprofiler)

 

type your password and click on "install kexts" - reboot

now you should have working audio with two channels, silver HD icons, working shutdown / restart and correct information in system profiler.

 

STEP 5 _{- make your video card working}

 

Open EFIStudio on desktop. Choose "display" and select the according graphics card.

In this case nvidia geforce 7300GT 256MB. now "add device" and click on "write to com.apple.boot.plist"

 

Now you should have on reboot working graphics with QE/CI - a fully working retail install !!!

 

 

STEP 6 _{- backup your system}

 

before you start updating the os x, you should make the first backup of your start disk.

Boot into "LeoX", start disk utility and create an image of "MacHD" and save it to "Backups".

 

In case you need to restore it: boot again into "LeoX" and mount the MacHD.dmg.

Now start copycatx* and choose the cloning option. Clone the mounted image "MacHD" back to your start disk. When finished you should be able to boot the restored start disk without any patches! No blinking cursor!

STEP 7 _{- update your system}

 

download the mac os x updates you want to install. boot into "LeoX" and start the update from here. Choose "MacHD" as the volume to install to . If you did install the IntelCpuMdisabler.kext correctly, there won´t be any issues. Installing from another disk also doesn´t install the "InstallAtStartup" folder in "System". In case that any problems would appear: just boot again into "LeoX" and delete AppleIntelCpuPowermanagment.kext , repair disk permissions or whatever is needed. At this point,at the latest you should see the key benefits of a second leo install for maintenance

 

I recommend always to install the updates step by step.that way you you will find the problem if it appears much easier.

As soon as you installed the 10.5.2 update I recommend you to install the Leo graphics update. later on you have to install it with pacifist.

the updates later are still missing some files that the Leo graphics update has

 

 

recommended update procedure

 

from LeoX 10.5.2 combo update - reboot to MacHD

 

now you are ready to install theSMBIOResolver.kext (corrects the informations in systemprofiler)

after that you will see the correct settings in system profiler.

install the leopard graphics update now

 

from LeoX 10.5.3 update - reboot to MacHD to verify

 

stay in MacHD and do the 10.5.4 update ( there are no problems wit that update)

 

from LeoX 10.5.5 update - reboot to MacHD - you´re done!

 

 

STEP 8 _{- important informations and rules}

 

install all necessary updates and install the apps you need. When finished don´t forget to make again a new backup of "MacHD".

 

Save all important files to "Data" - never to "MacHD"

do a backup of "MacHD" after each update.

Do a regular update of "Samples" and "Data" with timemachine.

Copy the MacHD.dmg file to an external drive if possible

 

following this rules you have a perfect backup of your system

no i didn´t. as i wrote before I don´t see any advantages installing with 132 method if you have already another install on the system. it´s slower and if you install also the IntelCpuMdisabler.kext (which is extracted from a boot-132 release), you should be able to update as you could with boot 132. if you have already installed a small leo - why to go the longer way if not needed?

Peach, I ordered the GA-EP45-DS3 to replace my ASUS P5K mobo. How did you overclock Q6600 to 3.2 ghz with the GA-Ep45-DS3?

my system is working stable with this settings:

 

frequency 356 x 9

performance enhance set to standard

system memory multiplier set to (auto) result = ram speed 1068

DRam timings set to 5-5-5-18

VCore set to 1.32500 with (auto) setting

DRam voltage 2.00 V (1.9 - 2.1 V are recommended)

 

my system runs idle with core temperatures around 40°C / 104°F , what indicates a cpu temperature lower than 30°C / 86°F. the temperature of the single cores are between 10°C and 15°C higher than the cpu temperature.

 

nevertheless you should care about the fact that every hardware is unique, therefore you could use this settings only as an indication. from my experiences it makes sense to make some memtests....but: os x is much more sensible as windows.so it could happen that you have a positive memtest but kernel panics. in this case increase slowly first the DRam voltage - second slowly the VCore voltage

The 1000h DAW works great, I found that OSX Logic 8 plays VSIi's WAAY better then REAPER. REAPER was the best VSTi player I found on WinDOS.

 

The Logic Pro window fits perfectly on a 10 inch 1000x600 screen, you DAW freaks would love this box! I am using Core audio.

 

And the 1000h will have a Atom 330 upgrade soon which will give dual core. This will make the 1000h even better for Logic 8!

I had a good look for this question to no avail.

 

After trying it out on my mates computer for the last 3 weeks i decided to buy it. Ive just forked out $649 on logic studio and am eager to get a stable osx86 system to run it on. After playing around with leo for a little while & updating it, I agree that it is wise to have 2 installs. Although this guide deals with the second install being a retail leo i was wondering whether it is possible for the install on MacHD to be a kaly 10.5.2 or 10.5.1. The execution of these discs either via the desktop or via the terminal results in a requirement to boot in order to install. The message says:

"Click the button below to restart your computer and begin the installation process".

 

I am hesitant to do so because i am not certain that the second install will be clean, or at least preserve the first install so that i may then use OSX86 tools/EFI to make the MacHD install bootable. Is there a way to boot a kaly from the LeoX install without rebooting? or should i just reboot and install and then EFI/osx86 tools will be useable?

if you follow the guide 100% there shouldn´t be any issues. the P45 boards work better with the retail install. if you search the board you will see that the most problems appeared using patched versions.

nevertheless there shouldn´t be any problem to install also kaly this way - this problem appears only if you didn´t select the right destination to install to(to MacHD in this case).

I had to reset to install kalyway 10.5.2. The install was sucessful and upon restart i booted into my LeoX install. However, after running the osx86tools fdisk and efi instructions, and then reseting, there was no option to boot into MacHD. In fact, i couldnt see the MacHD install at startup . When i am running off LeoX i can clearly see the HD and all relevant installed files for OSX).

 

One thing i noticed after executing fdisk is that in osx86 tools it says

 

chmod 775 /Users/Steve/Desktop/OSX86Tools.app/Contents/Resources/FDISKEFI.app/Contents/Resources/fdisk

Thanks peach. Its all making more sense now.

 

i did not boot to MacHD. Usually i hit F8 and then see what i can boot too - this didnt show the Mac HD partition but i havent tried F12 yet....

 

I ve been looking at installing the kaly 10.5.2 from the LeoX install by using osxinstall.mpkg. I found the file in the kaly cd under /volumes/kaly ...etc/system/installation/packages

 

The result was a problem with UUIDs and as a result i installed smbiosresolver.kext. Then upon executing osxinstall.mpkg from the kaly cd, i noticed that it wouldnt let me select the destination MacHD. Instead the installer would skip that step and tell me it was installing it to leoX.

 

Now i checked out this post and realised that i can edit the osxinstall.mpkg file:

But thats for an iso file (the kaly dvd is read only) which is all good if i burn another dvd i guess. Im not sure whether there is another way to be able to choose my install destination when executing osxinstall.mpkg from LeoX.

 

If there isnt, ill run the kaly cd from boot and install it to MacHD and then try this F12 thing to boot into MacHD.
