Hey Verdant.

I tried it with iATKOS v4.1 and all the settings you suggested but got the stop sign at the startup options loading screen.

Hope this tells you something...

JellyMan

Can you clarify what you mean by the stop sign at the startup options loading screen......do you mean when trying to install from the DVD, or after installation when trying to boot from the HDD.....?

Hi verdant.

I was reading the last people posts and I was thinking... many people have different distros like iDeneb, iAtkos, or many others... don´t you think it would be easier if you tell people to use iPC 10.5.6 since you´re most familiarized with this distro? I believe if people used this distro it would spent less time on helping them.

Since I installed the iPC 10.5.6 I have a very stable system, running so smooth and pretty faster than 10.5.5 installation and everything is working. I´d suggest people here to download this distro and try to install it.

About that little config problem on Apple USB Ethernet adapter, I could say that little file worked for me like a charm and solved my problem for sure. In fact, now I have two ethernet options to choose, since I installed the nForceLAN from en0 my onboard lan is working too. That´s nice. :)

If there´s any way I could help you here, let me know so I can help people two. I don´t know much, but I believe some little things I can do it.

Hi breakingbad,

I agree that iPC is a very good distro due to its "design" and extensive list of patches (I use it.... :) ) and if a reader does not already have a distro, then it has much to recommend it......

However, generally, it is not the distro choice causing the problems.......

It is (1) the BIOS settings, (2) bootability from OS X Install DVD depending on the DVDRW i.e. SATA vs PATA and/or subsequently partitioning and/or formatting the target OS X HDD/HDD volume, and (3) the Customize menu choices......and sometimes a "bad BIOS" as you well know.... :) ........or sometimes an IDE cabling problem......see here.......

The required choices (especially the kernel and chipset choices) in the Customize menu depend on the MOBO + CPU + HDD/DVDRW specs, and so will generally follow a similar pattern regardless of the distro used.....

My system is a case in point.....I have successfully installed and run all of these OS X distros:

Kalyway Leopard 10.5.1 [using OSX86DeFacto]

iATKOS v1.0r2 Leopard 10.5.1 [using OSX86DeFacto]

iATKOS v1.0r3 Leopard 10.5.1

Kalyway Leopard 10.5.2

iATKOS v2.0i Leopard 10.5.2

JaS Leopard 10.5.4 (unpatched) [using OSX86DeFacto]

JaS Leopard 10.5.4 (nForceATA patched)

iDeneb v1.1 Leopard 10.5.4 (patched)

iPC OSx86 10.5.6 (unpatched with PPF1) [using OSX86DeFacto]

iPC OSx86 10.5.6 (patched to PPF5)

and have also updated from 10.5.2 to 10.5.5 using Mysticus C*'s Updater packages……

You can help by encouraging thread readers to give me fully detailed information when I request it (as you have done and do) e.g. BIOS screen shots with full detail on the settings options, boot screen shots, kernel panic screen shots, systemlogs, sudo dmesg output, lspci -nn output etc. etc. because it saves both me and them time......otherwise I have to try second guess their problems by asking leading questions which takes a lot of time with many posts and replies to posts...... :P and by answering any questions you can......or posting a short guide, e.g. as you have done on BIOS flashing etc....... :D

Glad to have helped you to get the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter running in 10.5.6...... the required AX8817x driver can be found here...... :)

You don´t need to thank me man. We´re all here for one reason that is help each other with the things we discovered first or things sometimes people don´t know. That´s why this community exists. To help the others and I´m glad to be part of it.

Unfortunately, I´m not able to help as much as you because I don´t know anything about UNIX or LINUX, so at this matter I can´t do much, but with some hardware basics and the knowledge I got from others here, I can give a little help for sure. I already bought one book on Mac OS X Leopard from Davig Pogue and the series Missing Manuals that´s helping me a lot to understand much better how the OS works and now I can understand many things I couldn´t in a near past. ;)

Gotta go now.

Disorden

Unfortunately I can´t help you but I´m sure that verdant will. He knows this much better than me.

I´m here to say that my BIOS config is pretty much like yours, but with a little difference. In the SATA Mode Select, my BIOS doesn´t show me the option of AHCI mode. So I never could choose it even for test, but never had problem on booting not using AHCI option. My problem since the very begin was my BIOS because I own an MSI board that´s seem to be problematic.

In my case, I have a different HD for booting OS X. I don´t use dual boot with windows.

I don´t know for sure if what I´m gonna say will help you, but it should worth a try.

In my case here, I used DVD-RW IDE as master and CD-RW IDE as slave and never got this little problem of Still waiting for root device.

HDD S.M.A.R.T I run here DISABLED as some people suggested in the forum.

And ACPI Suspend Type - I run as S3 and SUSPEND options and works fine.

Have you checked in the forum if you mobo needs a moded BIOS? Because sometimes it´s necessary to flash your BIOS with a moded one to make everything works. I have to flash mine get everything fully working.

Hope to help.

Sory i wasn`t clear enough...when i say boot i mean booting from the OS X Install Dvd, i have a lot of dvds with different verisions like kalyway ideneb etc (i told you the list in the previous post) so that`s my problem, i can`t manage to install anyone. Well i supose i`ll follow the steps of the link that you suggest me so i can turn windows to AHCI in order to after that try to boot from any version of mac and then i tell you what happened, maybe that`s the reason why i can`t pass form the initializing darwin`s screen.

Ye, if AHCI is a BIOS option for SATA Mode then it has to be set usually in order for OS X to run.......

How much MOBO ram have you got installed?

Also confirm that your is indeed a Pentium 4 single core CPU.....AFIK it supports Hyper-Threading.......

Report back......I will then help with the DVD install phase....... :|

Hey Verdant ,

I have applied the settings you told me. But it still gave me 2 Errors -

1.Firewire Failed.

2.Sam Multimedia failed.

Other options -

Init Display First [PEG](PCI SLOT,PEG,PEG[sLOT 2])

ACPI Suspend Type [s3 (STR)] (S1(POS))

And under SATA-II RAID Config i just have 2 options [Enable,Disable].

I have 3 GB Ram installed on my MOBO and Processer supports Hyper-Threading.......!!!

Thanx For Your Support.

No improvement.

Do yo have an IDE DVDRW you can try/borrow just for the install phase......?

And just to confirm: you no longer get the "Still waiting for root device error" but do still get the "SAM multimedia error"........?

It is necessary for me to install OS X from an IDE Dvdwriter or rom ..??

It can be either......needing a SATA or PATA (IDE) DVD drive depends on your answer to my question as to which error still occurs.....

Oh.

The errors are "Still waiting for root device" and " Sam Multimedia : Read or Write Failed ".

This certainly seems to be a case of SATA DVD drive incompatibility.......I will PM you in about 3 hours with another possible solution for you to try.......

I would very much like to try the OSX86DeFacto method described on the first page. I have read through all 27 pages of this thread and tried everything I can think of to get around the "Still waiting for root device" errors while trying to boot the DVD. I can't get past the grey Apple screen, which eventually hangs with the "no entry" icon.

I have tried using iPC 10.5.6 and iDeneb 10.5.5 in addition to trying to create a Boot-132 CD with an nForce kernel. I have used the Kalyway boot prep DVD, which does load, but doesn't detect the SATA hard drives when connected. I have also tried disabling the SATA controller and using an IDE hard drive, which is detected by the Kalyway boot prep, but neither iPC nor iDeneb will load to setup.

Both DVDs have been verified as working and installable in another system, along with both the SATA and IDE hard drives. Ubuntu 8.10 has been installed successfully on the motherboard/processor, and the RAM checks out.

I have also tried every SATA mode (IDE, AHCI, Linux AHCI, and RAID) and combination of drives (SATA hard drive, IDE hard drive, SATA hard drive connected via USB). Absolutely nothing will get the installer DVDs to start on this nForce board.

I have tried booting with multiple combinations of the -x -s -v -f -legacy cpus=1 rd=diskXsY flags, some of which avoid the "waiting for root device" error and instead kernel panic on the "nfs_init_failed" message. In the lines just above the kernel panic, the hard drive is properly identified by name, so it's at least aware that the drive exists. That's as far as I can get, though.

Hardware:

Zotac NF-630I-D-E mainboard (GeForce 7100, MCP73)

Pentium E5200 2.5GHz dual-core 45nm CPU

2GB Corsair DDR2 @ 667

120GB Seagate SATA hard drive / 500GB WD IDE hard drive

IDE DVD-RW

USB keyboard/mouse

Onboard audio, LAN disabled

Please help! Thanks!

Please post your BIOS menu and sub-menu settings as screen shots in the thread........AFIK your MOBO has just 1 IDE channel enabling you to connect only 2 IDE devices?......so check that you have your IDE DVDRW jumpered as Master and your IDE HDD jumpered as Slave, with both connected to the MOBO correctly depending on your IDE cable types......

IDE CABLE CONNECTIONS

1. The modern 40-pin Ultra DMA 80-wire cable can be made connector-specific by jumpering CS (Cable Select) on HDD and jumpering CSEL (Cable Select) on the DVDROM, because the cable connectors are usually color-coded as follows:

Blue connector to the host i.e. MOBO,

Black connector to the chosen primary device, i.e. device cable-selected as Master (usually i.e.should be the END connector of the cable)

Grey connector to the chosen secondary device, i.e. device cable-selected as Slave (usually i.e. should the MIDDLE connector of the cable)

BUT not always......... :thumbsdown_anim:

With such a cable, if you jumper the DVDROM as Master and the HDD as Slave, or vice versa, then the Slave device is usually connected to the middle connector and the Master device to the end connector (with the Blue connector as always connected to the MOBO IDE connector)

2. If you have the older 40-pin 40-wire Cable Select cable, then the Master Connector is the MIDDLE connector of the cable, and the Slave connector is the END connector of the cable (with the Blue connector as always connected to the MOBO IDE connector).

3. If you have the older 40-pin 40-wire Regular (non-Cable Select) then the function of the MIDDLE and END connectors on the cable 40-pin 40-wire (with the Blue connector as always connected to the MOBO IDE connector) are determined by the jumper settings on the devices connected to each (i.e. Master or Slave). With such a cable, if you set both devices as Cable Select, each will configure itself as Master, causing a signal conflict.

4. If you have the very rare situation of one device having to be jumpered on Cable Select and the other jumpered as Master or as Slave (i.e. no CS or CSEL option), then Cable Select mode is invoked, configuring the MIDDLE connector of the cable as Master on older 40-pin 40-wire Cable Select cable, and on modern 40-pin Ultra DMA 80-wire cable, configuring the END connector of the cable as Master (with in either case, the Blue connector connected to the MOBO IDE connector).

Confusing or what.........

Please post your BIOS menu and sub-menu settings as screen shots in the thread........AFIK your MOBO has just 1 IDE channel enabling you to connect only 2 IDE devices?

I only have two IDE devices, so this is not a problem.

so check that you have your IDE DVDRW jumpered as Master and your IDE HDD jumpered as Slave

I have already tried swapping Master/Slave between the DVD and hard drive. It has no effect on the "still waiting for root device" message. It is a brand new, known to be working, 80 wire cable.

Your photographs and results suggest that you may have an older 40-pin 40-wire Cable Select or Regular cable

That is not the case.

Your MOBO has two separate IDE channels, hence the two IDE connectos on the MOBO

It has one, two-device IDE channel and one IDE connector.

As to BIOS settings, they are all set as necessary and appropriate based on all previous suggestions in the thread. If there is a specific setting you'd like me to check, I'd be happy to do so, but posting a series of screenshots would not be a productive use of time. As I said, all onboard devices are disabled except the GPU. IDE Block Mode is enabled (but has already been tried disabled), as is DMA transfer (also attempted disabled). Prefetch mode is disabled (also tried enabled). HPET is enabled (and has been tried disabled). Installs have been attempted with APIC and ACPI disabled--APIC disabled won't boot at all, ACPI being disabled has no effect on the message.

At least two other members of this forum claim to have installed successfully on this board. As I said, I have thoroughly exhausted all published options over the past several days. Ubuntu continues to work without a hitch on this system, but all of my other computers are Macs except for a MythTV HTPC. I am not new to PC building, Mac OS X, or Linux/BSD, so you are welcome to be more concise in your replies if it will save you time.
