Yes we know that. There's nothing wrong with the Intel side. It's been some time ago that Intel opened it's chipsets' datasheets to developers & programmers. So linux guys can make great improvements over the intel products on the driver side. Two open source organizations are side by side.

But here's the dark side:

Apple's Quartz Engine, Core Image or etc.'s codes are naturally closed. So, correct me if I'm wrong, only daredevil apple developers can help hand in hand with osx86 front.

That means, we need a mole-apple-developer and it's highly illegal probably.

I don't think so - the point of a driver is to remove the hardware and replace it with an abstraction. Quartz and CI deal only with the abstraction, the driver deals with the hardware.

What i have heard that COMPUTER companies will develope most of this hardware because they've just found out that it is the only hardware that cannot be hacked and no one can develope a kext or a package for it, and also to keep the mac OS away from PCs. most especially snow leopard. because. that's why most of the new laptops and MOBOs have this specification. That's why sometimes you will find out that widescreen monitors are working the PC driver, but it doesn't work with MAC OS (any version)... BTW... my brother in law is working in a hardware factory for PC. and they're the one's creating and assembling the PC MOBOs supply worldwide..

This is just for an INFO...and not sure if it's accurate... but if your PC is working already with MAC OS... keep it don't by brand new PCs... especially those that have an onboard GMA X4500 with dev id 2e32...info link - (http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ClassValue=Motherboard&ProductID=3024&ProductName=GA-G41M-ES2L)

I don't think so. You don't have to use the on board intel graphics chipset on desktop mobos. If you buy a PCI graphics card of a convenient NVIDIA chipset for osx86 ( for example, 9600 GT) & put it on your mobo, it will work as if nothing ever happened.

Well, according to macnn, who cites a trustworthy source, current mbps are due to a refresh on April the 13th. A taiwanese source also claims the same thing. This refresh will include the new i7/i5/i3 processors and will include hybrid nvidia and intel graphics. Let's hope that the wait is finally over and there is hope afterall for this card.

i sure hope so i surely don't want to buy a new computer since i just bought mine last august and i have everything working perfectly except backlight control and this damn quartz.

I am also hoping for quartz support for the Intel GMA4500. I was able to install SL 6.2 on my Asus K60IJ laptop and everything else worked perfectly. It's very frustrating not to be able to watch dvd movies, jpeg images or use graphics intensive programs. In the end I uninstalled SL and went for Linux Mint (which is great, but not as good as SL). :)

Without QE it's true some Apple software doesn't work but there is lots of other 3rd party programs that do work.(if you were using windows and IE8 wasn't working good i think you would just download Firefox or Chrome)The only thing i can't do is play graphics intensive games but i have an Xbox and a 42 inch tv for that.Everything I want to do on a 15 inch laptop can be done. So for me, not having QE isn't a factor.I can surf the net, edit and view photos, watch videos, listen to music, make skype calls, take screenshots it's a laptop so if i need to do more than that I'll do it on a Windows PC or my Imac.

Sure if you want to just download an operating system and install it and have everything work out of the box than maybe OSX won't be your first choice but if you are up to the challenge of installing something that isn't suppose to work and you don't mind reading and learning new things then i say TRY ITt.Your efforts will not go unrewarded. It is called Hackintosh for a reason, there is always people looking for solutions to things that don't work(many of them much smarter than me) Benjan"s recent work on brightness control, the release of an intel wireless driver just last week to name a couple of examples.Thing are always improving through the efforts of many talented people in this community.

In conclusion I would say,you can have a very usable and very stable laptop running leopard or snow leopard with Intel x4500 graphics even without QE

Toshiba L300

leopard 10.5.8/snow leopard 10.6.3 32 bit

99% working:no QE

everything else 100%

sorry for being offtopic, but how exactly did you manage to get your internal wireless working? I've got the same laptop, so it would be nice to know, in case you're not using an external one.

Mine came with the Atheros wireless card which at the time wasn't really supported in Leopard so i switched to a Dell card, very easy to do,it's just under the keyboard. On a side note the Atheros card is now supported in Snow Leopard by adding the device id the the kexts so i use it in my Acer One

Even the atheros ar9285? the last time I heard, it worked and kept scanning but either it didnt find any network or the card wont connect to the network? Is it that easy to change cards for a compaq too?

Also, what guarantee do we have that a 4500 kext would be released together with the release of the iseries?

the new iSeries processors(or Arrandale if you want to call them like that) come bundled with a variation of the x4500, which is basically a 4500 "on steroids". Intel disallows processors from the i3/5/7 family to be sold without that card, so guess what, we get the drivers. Many Apple stores here in europe and australia are down for restock which could only confirm the rumours of a Tuesday launch. If you want to check the newest stuff and updates go check the macrumors forum(the waiting for arrandale thread)

Is the dev id from your atheros pci168c,1c? If so, I'd like to have the drivers you're using :) . Back in leopard there were some buggy, incomplete drivers available, which only worked whenever they felt like it (and also froze my computer pretty often) which stopped working in SL at all, so I had to resort in buying an usb adapter.

I know we are getting way off topic but mine is 168c,2a. Pci168c,1c should have native support in 10.6.2 and in 10.6.3 at least it lists in the Airport kexts Info .plist

Acer 5735-4624 uses 1366x768 resolution. I know because i have one

I got this to work!! I had to Extract the 3100 Kexts from the package then install with KextHelper and VIOLA! it lets me change the resuolution!

The one BIG Prob, I don't have the RIGHT resolution needed...The Highest I can go is 1366x768, But I need 1366x720, the only 720 one is 1280x 720...I am running 10.6.2 It is an Acer 5735-4624 with the 4500M Graphics.
