I'm having serious issues getting around the 'still waiting for root device' problem and would appreciate a link to OSx86DeFacto to see if it will help get me beyond this - cheers

What are your system details.....see post #1 for the information I am wanting........

hi everyone... I'm not sure if the EVGA 790i Ultra has had the issues with the network solved. I tried to look/search over the 47 pages but to no avail.

I can only boot into the OS with cpus=1 maxmem=2048. I used iAtkos v7 +voodoo 9.7.0 then updated to 10.5.8. Have video and Lan, just freezes during large downloads and the cpu+mem thing.

For nForce chipset MOBOs eno's nForceLAN.kext should normally work.....

If you can only boot into OS X using cpus=1 maxmem=2048.......then (assuming you have set up your BIOS as per the 790i Ultra in post #1......

1. If you are using a IDE DVDRW, install slashack's AppleNforceATA.kext v0.1 but if you are using a SATA DVDRW, then you may need to use MeDevil's AppleNForceATA_Test.kext and maxmem=3072 in com.apple.Boot.plist....

2. You probably need a patched DSDT.aml file in /Extra generated by Chameleon 2.0 RC1 or 2 or 3 bootloader......use fassl's DSDT Patcher to patch your DSDT.aml file...... you may then be able to boot without having to use cpus=1......

Also try the 10.5.7 or 10.5.8 vanilla kernel instead of Voodoo 9.5.0 or later derivatives.......

Thanks so much for hte replay. I have practically memorized that first post! lame I know...

I've read many posts on the eVGA 790i specifically and none seemed to have success with vanilla (perhaps I missed it?) could you explain the diff? I went with voodoo because a) was there on the iAtkos CD, and  booted 9.5 during the install so I figured it'd work...

Since the 790i Ultra is a more recent nForce chipset MOBO it is worth trying the vanilla kernel as some have been able to use it on the 750i chipset MOBO.....

great! got the maxmem part fixed. Running at 4GB. DSDT patch didn't work though. sigh...

could it be a permissions deal?

-rw-r--r-- 1 root staff 19326 Oct 20 20:30 DSDT.aml

not sure what the staff group is...but root owns it at least.

n00b question. How do I remove voodoo kernel and put in EFI+vanilla?

wait, I think I'm not running voodoo anymore b/c uname -a shows

Darwin localhost 9.8.0 Darwin Kernel Version 9.8.0: Wed Jul 15 16:55:01 PDT 2009; root:xnu-1228.15.4~1/RELEASE_I386 i386

I guess the update to 10.5.8 did that? I'm a bit confused now

When you do the Apple Combo Update it will install the vanilla kernel.......I suggest that you re-install the Voodoo 9.5.0 kernel (the only official Voodoo kernel) using the .dmg installer with the 9.5.0 System.kext (and also 9.5.0 seatbelt.kext for .dmg mounting).....also repair Extensions:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions
 sudo chmod -R go=u-w /System/Library/Extensions
 sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

and boot with -v -f

I finally saw it quickly flash some error, something about plist was all i could read before it goes black. So sad and frustrating

Try typing -v -x -f mach_kernel.voodoo at the Darwin boot prompt....

Your com.apple.Boot.plist probably has mach_kernel in it under <key>Kernel</key> and not mach_kernel.voodoo......

Has anyone here had any luck with the XFX 780i board?

Right now I'm running a q6600, 4 cores, 2.4ghz (OC'd 3.0ghz), and 2 EVGA 8800GT 512mb cards (no SLI)

I've actually got several different releases to install and run properly but my cards are being detected as 32mb software mode. Finally I was able to at least get something greater than 1024x768 in XxX 20.5.6 by adding my resolution using GraphicsMode in my boot.plist but it still detects it as a generic 32mb card.

I've tried EFI strings, a number of different injectors (NVKush, NVEnabler, NVinject, etc) and still no luck. Any idea what the cause could be? I'm thinking my issues may be mobo specific as other people with the same identical setups (sans mobo) have had luck with full video support.

I assume you have tried aqua-macs strings here.......and have got 1 card working fully (i.e. CI/QE/on-the-fly switchable resolutions etc.) using fixed nVidia kexts as explained in post #1 before trying to get two cards working.....how you can get the strings may also be dependent on your GPU chipset version as haroot noted here......

so progress...

I have LAN able to download all of XCode...all 2.73GB of it without crashing! Figured out what was causing a freeze was that I had to reset the BIOS to the 790i Ultra board...they stupidly have the default FSB lower than the memory bus. I dawned on me when I booted into Ubuntu and *it* froze...then I remembered the settings I had to put wayback when I got the board.

Got all 4GB of ram.

Still have CPUs=1 flag issue. But I'm still running 9.8.0 from an image I took before trying voodoo kernel. How can I make sure I install the voodoo kernel correctly without the plist issues? Could someone just step by step walk this "geek chick" by the hand? Cause after all of this, what I'll do it create DVD torrent for all others with this board and thus give back to the community

Do the following (assuming you already have the 9.5.0 seatbelt.kext from 10.5.5 installed in /System/Library/Extensions):

1. Download and mount Voodoo_Kernel_Release_1.0_Rev_A.dmg to access the 9.5.0 Voodoo Kernel.pkg....

2. Use Pacifist to extract the Voodoo mach_kernel and System.kext from the 9.5.0 Voodoo Kernel.pkg to your Desktop.....

3. Copy the Voodoo mach_kernel from the Desktop to the / i.e. root directory

cd /Users/"username"/Desktop/
sudo mv mach_kernel /mach_kernel.Voodoo

4. Copy the System.kext to /System/Library/Extensions and repair permissions

sudo mv System.kext /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext
sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/
sudo chmod -R go=u-w /System/Library/Extensions/
sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/
exit

5. Modify your com.apple.Boot.plist file using your favourite .plist editor or TextEdit....

Under the Kernel key, put mach_kernel.Voodoo between <string> and </string>

6. Reboot with -v -f

well, I went as far as 4. steps...then system froze after sudo touch. Kept popping up that it couldnt' read Extensions, then permissions stopped them, then touch froze it.

Rebooted into safe (v f s flags) tried to edit boot.plist...was empty.

Rebooted now with just -v mach_kernel.Voodoo... KP

Rebooted with -v cpus=1, thing boots.

I'm confused as heck. I thought it needed com.apple.Boot.plist to boot, but when I do

sudo nano /Volumes/OSX1058/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

the darned file is empty.

Where am I going wrong here?

here is my root contents:

no, no extra folder (weird too cause I asked in iATKOS to make one). I was just playing with Lizard, used it to install Chameleon RC3, and fooled around with it and made a boot.iso. Insided was a good plist generated! I'm going to repair permissions and reboot...wish me luck! lol

Delete the following files from root:

mach_kernel.ctfsys

mach_kernel

BTW mach_kernel.voodoo is dated 6 December, 2008 14:10 and is 5.9 MB in size

Hi all. In case anybody need it.

I was able to fresh install iDeneb v. 1.6 10.5.8 on a Strike II NSE (790i), 3GHz Quad + 4GB RAM, default Bios settings, ADI1988B Audio.

Here how I did it.

I did boot from IDE DVD with cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v.

Install with the default and choosing vanilla kernel (no LAN,but nForce ATA, no testing nForceATA) and Chamaleon v2.

Before quitting and rebooting I've launched Terminal and manually installed the latest AnForceLAN driver. I've added an A at the begininh of the name to load it before other kexts and get rid of the annoying message at boot about time synch.

After booting first time with again cpus=1 (but in my case maxmem=2048 non more needed) I do have installed a modified IOATAFamily.kext to get rid of IOKitWait... message at boot and LONG boot time (now it boots in 7/8 seconds).

Also do have installed:

Taruga_AD1988b_rev4 to fix Audio

seatbelt_fix.pkg found in iDeneb DVD to fix KP on mounting .dmg images

and the Voodoo dmg installation pakage foun at their site to avoid cpus=1 boot.

Installed also the new Chameleon-2.0-RC2-r640

Installed graphics for my GPU (nVidia GTX285) using original nVidia driver and "Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards" from netkas and get both QE and CI.

I do now have all 4 cores, 4GB both LAN ports. Upgraded to all the latest.

So far no crashes using almost any programs.

The next step: SnowLeo...

Hope it hepls.

Hi Verdant!

Below is the image...from console it had repeated errors about the cpu count... I had no mounted drives, had just opened system profiler before going to browser and trying to open history to get to this thread and respond to you.

Glad to help...... :ninja:

You need to delete the forcedeth kext.......to use nForce MOBOs onboard LAN for the internet/networking you should only have use eno's nForceLAN.kext (see here.....) in /S/L/E and if nForceEthernetController.kext is present in /S/L/E then delete it too......

You can use Kext Helper b7 to install new kexts....

Also, remove nvenet.kext, or rename it to nvenet.kext.bad because nvenet loads even when another Ethernet/LAN kext has already been loaded for the hardware.

To find nvenet.kext in 10.5.7 (and 10.5.8?), look in /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns....this is a new location for nvenet.kext; prior to 10.5.7, this kext was not in IONetworkingFamily.kext.
