Try booting with -v cpus=1 maxmem=2048 before attempting to install WoW......

not sure whats going on... cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v or cpus=1 -v keyboard/mouse do not respond even plugged them into the PS/2 ports with a USB converter. System is not hung up as I can watch the clock change time, but if I boot normally everything works fine. Disabled 3 of the 4 cores... same results... mouse does not respond.

Assuming your current Voodoo kernel is named as mach_kernel.....

Boot with flag

-v mach_kernel.voodoo

then once in OS X modify your /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist....

1. Go to the Terminal, and at the $ prompt, type in

sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

2. Enter your password when requested. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor within the Terminal window.

3. Type in (without any spaces anywhere)

mach_kernel.voodoo

between <string> and </string> under <key>Kernel</key>.

4. Move the cursor the Terminal window down until it no longer moves, then press Ctrl-O (i.e. ^O) and then Enter, to save the modified com.apple.Boot.plist file.

5. Press Ctrl-X (i.e. ^X) to Exit and type "exit" at the $ prompt to log out of the Terminal and then close and quit Terminal.

Got everything running. So to revert back to the previous kernel all I need to do is remove

mach_kernel.voodoo

between <string> and </string> under <key>Kernel</key>.

and replace the wording as it were before to?

I have iAtkos v7, and I receive a kernel panic with my hardware:

Evga 790i FTW motherboard

8800 GTS evga overlocked KO

4 GB of DDR3-1066

Hard Drives:

3 Sata, 1 in Sata port 1 (500GB), others in Sata ports 4, and 5.

1 Sata DVD Plextor in Sata port 6.

1 IDE LG DVD on IDE channel 0

Keyboard: Mac keyboard,

Mouse: Logitech MX510

I have changed the following in the BIOS to get it to boot:

CPU features-

-disabled virtualization tech

-dsiabled execute bit

-enabled XD

-disabled CPU max limit

Raid:

-enabled but all drives are disabled.

-Enabled HPET 2.0

All other settings are stock in the BIOS. If I need to change something there please tell me.

I have the non-patched iAtkos v7. Do I need to patch it for the nforce sata, if So how?

A screenshot of your kernel panic would be helpful... also follow the blog verdant provided and the tips he suggested while I installed should get you where you need to be.

@verdant... got everything installed with cpus=1 maxmem=2048; reboot with no args and unable to load wow, just crashes... I wonder if this has something to do with the 4gb limit?. Crash log from wow suggests EXC_BAD_ACCESS KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE... updated the kernel to Release_1.0_Rev_A and the same error occurs. However, if I boot with cpus=1 maxmem=2048 all is fine. Not worried about wow itself, just testing for stability and thought this would be the best application to test the system and capabilities.

Even with slashack's AppleNForceATA v0.1 kext installed, which enables use of >3GB RAM without any problems for 99% of the time, there still seem to be some apps that cause memory addressing kernel panics either during installation or during large data file transfers e.g. video/audio files......

If you temporarily boot with -v cpus=1 maxmem=2048 when installing the app, or for doing large data file transfers e.g. video/audio files......and then afterwards, rebooting as normal, everything is generally OK again...... :)

Re your BIOS settings:

-enabled XD ?

-disabled CPU max limit

Raid:

-enabled but all drives are disabled. What about SATA?

In the Evga 790i FTW BIOS, some key settings should be:

A. In the IDE Function Setup menu

Serial-ATA Controller [All Enabled]

B. In the CPU Feature sub-menu of the Frequency/Voltage Control menu

Limit CPUID MaxVal [Disabled]

Intel SpeedStep [Disabled]

CPU Thermal Control [TM1 & TM2]

C1E Enhanced Halt State [Disabled]

Execute Disable Bit [Enabled]

Virtualization Technology [Disabled] or [Enabled] if you want to run VM applications such as VirtualBox etc......

CPU Core 0 Enabled

CPU Core 1 [Enabled]

CPU Core 2 [Enabled]

CPU Core 3 [Enabled]

See my recommended BIOS settings template downloadable in post #1.... for the other settings to use for OS X.......remember to enable the MAC0 Lan port in BIOS if you plan to use onboard LAN for networking......

Please post a screenshot of the kernel panic.....

I figured the same... after the install I ran the application and it worked flawlessly. Rebooted without -v cpus=1 maxmem=2048 everything worked great, but once wow is launched and loaded it throws a panic. Overall system performance is great.

It must be something in the WOW coding that conflicts with Voodoo....? I assume you have checked the Insanelymac fora for WOW installation/running topics......I cannot help further on WOW as I am not a gamer........

I got around the kernel panic. I believe it was caused by me not selecting a kernel to install. I can now boot. The issue I have is randomly it will just freeze. Could this be caused by the 3> GB memory issue. If so it still happens to me when I boot with the cpus=1 maxmem=2048 options.

The best thing to do is post a screenshot of the kernel panic......put debug=0x144 in com.apple.Boot.plist under Kernel Flags.....

The kernel panic was caused by me trying to install a non-patched Kernel. I installed a patched one. This fixed the issue. However I do not have internet or network connectivity on my box. It would be greatly appreciated if you guys could help me fix it so I do. I know it is something related to what Kext files are installed. I messed around some with them and managed to make my system boot(unless booted via safeboot). I did a debug on it and found the error being:

"Still waiting on root device"

Any help would be appreciated.

Check that IDE LG DVD on IDE channel 0 is set as Master

Confirm that BIOS settings are correct for SATA Controller and for RAID....

Install slashack's AppleNForceATA v0.1 kext (since you have IDE DVDRW)....see post #1

BUT if you need to use your SATA DVDRW then you will probably need to use MeDevil's AppleNForceATA TEST but with more than 3GB RAM on the MOBO, as far as OS X is concerned you need to limit its access to no more than 3072 MB with maxmem=3072 under Kernel Flags in com.apple.Boot.plist.....

For network connection via Ethernet, you need to run eno's nForceLAN 0.62.13n.pkg.zip installer for your onboard LAN......see here....also check that nvenet.kext has been removed or renamed to nvenet.kext.*....go to /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/..... (this is a new location. nvenet.kext was not in IONetworkingFamily.kext prior to 10.5.7).

Apple's nvenet.kext causes a problem because it loads even when another Ethernet/LAN driver (kext) has already been loaded.....

Check that apart from nForceLAN.kext that no other Ethernet type kexts are in /S/L/E....the nForceLAN installer should have removed forcedeth.kext and nForceEthernetController.kext but also check for nForceEthernet.kext......

I now have onboard LAN to work. I dont have sound working yet. The reason being I have a Azalia onboard soundcard, and a HT Omega Claro+. Either of these I have been able to find kexts for. Everything else works now. I have to boot with -v maxmem=3047 cpus=1 but other then that everything works. Minus aMSN being laggy. This is probably due to it not having Anti-Aliasing turned on, or it being turned on. I'll have to see about compiling it.

Thanks for the help!

P.S If you know where to get the kexts for my soundcard then it would be appreciated.

I am typing to you now in my install. I fixed the network by reinstalling the nvlan.kext file again, and using the kext installer listed under sound on the first page. (kext helper b7). now I just need to figure out a way to make my mouse move faster...since its speed is too slow on the fastest setting. Anyone?

hello ALL,

I am new to the forums and i am having trouble with getting my system up and running. I am trying to use iDeneb v3 10.5.5 and here are my system specs:

Cpu: Intel Dual Core E5200 @ 2.5GHZ

Ram: 2 sticks dual channel 4GB

HDD: Maxtor ATA 200gb

DVD: Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R5112 ATA

MOBO: XFX 750i SLI extreme edition

Ethernet: NVIDIA nForce network

GFX: XFX Geforce 8600gt

I can get it installed no problem but always goes to the grey screen with the apple and never continues. -v or -x dont do a thing.

I probably am not selecting the right options (chipsets, kernels...ect)

Can anyone help me selected the right things and change my bios to work with this?

Hi all. In case anybody need it.

I was able to fresh install iDeneb v. 1.6 10.5.8 on a Strike II NSE (790i), 3GHz Quad + 4GB RAM, default Bios settings, ADI1988B Audio.

Here how I did it.

I did boot from IDE DVD with cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v.

Install with the default and choosing vanilla kernel (no LAN,but nForce ATA, no testing nForceATA) and Chamaleon v2.

Before quitting and rebooting I've launched Terminal and manually installed the latest AnForceLAN driver. I've added an A at the begininh of the name to load it before other kexts and get rid of the annoying message at boot about time synch.

After booting first time with again cpus=1 (but in my case maxmem=2048 non more needed) I do have installed a modified IOATAFamily.kext to get rid of IOKitWait... message at boot and LONG boot time (now it boots in 7/8 seconds).

Also do have installed:

Taruga_AD1988b_rev4 to fix Audio

seatbelt_fix.pkg found in iDeneb DVD to fix KP on mounting .dmg images

and the Voodoo dmg installation pakage foun at their site to avoid cpus=1 boot.

Installed also the new Chameleon-2.0-RC2-r640

Installed graphics for my GPU (nVidia GTX285) using original nVidia driver and "Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards" from netkas and get both QE and CI.

I do now have all 4 cores, 4GB both LAN ports. Upgraded to all the latest.

So far no crashes using almost any programs.

The next step: SnowLeo...

Hope it hepls.

Start by reading post #1 and sorting out the BIOS settings for your MOBO.....

My mantra for newbies is:

to help newbies is

Begin with correct BIOS settings; use USB keyboard & USB mouse to avoid PS/2 issues; check on PATA before you check on SATA; HDD MBR partition and format, unless you have good reason to use GPT; boot OS X DVD with -v cpus=1 maxmem=2048, unless you know better; initially choose no video, network and audio kext for easy path to OS X.....

Assuming your DVDRW and HDD both PATA (IDE) devices as your details indicate, make sure they are jumper set and connected correctly on an 80-wire IDE cable......see IDE connection section in post #1....... :)

Appreciate your help verdant... if you don't mind, I ask of you to post your viewpoint regarding retail.

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=182682

You have a nForce 750i chipset MOBO......AFAIK some are able to run the vanilla kernel on it.....but I believe they still have to use AppleNForceATA unless your 750i chipset is AHCI compliant......see here.....

You would have to go Intel chipset MOBO + Intel CPU to go more fully retail......but there is not simple YES answer to your question......see here.....there are still issues to be dealt when installing Snow Leopard Retail as shown here......and the same is true of Leopard.....

Re OS X do you mean Snow Leopard......? as I do not think Leopard 10.5.x is available for sale anymore on Apple Store......but probably via other retail channels/eBay etc.....

Hello verdant and fellow pre purchase testers

After reading as much as my old eyes can take in for the last few days, I have managed using the system specs below to have Kalyway 10.5.2 install to the point where I get a big tick and a successful installation notification screen.

However after the installer does the reboot it immediately goes to a dos like screen with with the error message

" Firewire GUID ffffffffffffffff is invalid ! "

" jettisoning" something or other then the screen just fills with

" Firewire GUID ffffffffffffffff is invalid ! "

I let this go for some 30 minutes hoping it may just need the time, but to no avail.

I have both a sata and ide dvd burner connected to the system and installed using the ide burner as is recommended, maybe I should disconnect the sata burner ?

I have some spare download allocation and time so can anyone be so kind as to advise a recent distro and kexts and things i might have success with ?

I'm a pain i know but thought i would just ask :-)

Bye the way kudos and thanks to you verdant ..... cheers

Just re read you posting requirments so to add

Am installing to a 40GIG partition on the second sata hdd labelled as OS X

My on board lan controllers are disabled
