Update: Read this webpage for information about alpha download

Update 2: Alpha test is over. Beta planning is going on, as soon as we have charted out the beta test procedure, we'll release the beta kernel.

-----------

We are working on 9.5 kernel, and need to test certain specific hardware. If you have any of the hardware configuration listed below and want to help in testing, please download the alpha-release kernel and test it.

1) Intel Atom

2) Intel Pentium 4 CPUs, specially without Hyperthreading (old willamette and northwood cores)

3) Pentium D 805

4) AMD Sempron/Athlon/Opteron

5) AMD Phenom/Deneb/Shanghai

6) Intel Xeon (both old and new)

7) Intel Celeron (all types)

NOTE: dfe boot132 may not work for pentium4's! Please read the page linked above.

Please check back on this page as we'll be updating it when we require more/different test setups.

I must say that when i tried to use speedsteping kext on this cpu with 9.4 voodoo I was having instantly freeze.

Hope it helps

I would be willing to test on my system. An Intel P4 with HyperThread - see sig for full specs.

I am running retail 10.5.5 Vanilla install + chameleon with EFI strings and Extra/Extensions on Boot-132-CD

Thanks a lot everyone for offering to help with testing!

Currently we're making sure the kernel doesn't hard panic :) Once it is a little bit stable, you'll each receive a link to the download and some info on how to test.

Each of the replies I have received either here or as PM is for machines we would like to test, so thanks again.

OK everyone, the first step in the test:

Please download the attached zip file and unzip it. There will be 2 files inside, cpuid and make_sysctl_log.command. These 2 files collect some information about your cpu.

-- Double click the make_sysctl_log.command file, it will open up in Terminal, and give you a message that the log has been saved on your desktop (CPUID_Log.txt)

-- Double click "cpuid" also, and copy-paste the output at the end of the CPUID_Log.txt file. (please put it at the end because I'd like to have the cpu model name at the top of the file).

-- Attach the file and post on this results thread (also your motherboard model if you know it). Post output only in that thread so we can keep test requests and test results separate.

Purpose: It helps me check all the cpuid "pages" for different types of CPUs to verify the information given in the reference docs and have some raw data to work with (eg. I just found my PentiumM supports up to page 8000_0008h instead of 80000006h as reported in Intel docs). Once I have the raw data to test against, the cache detection algorithm can be perfected, because obviously I do not have all types of CPUs to test on! :-)

CPUID_Log.zip

Thanks to everyone who submitted cpuid logs. The beta is ready but we need a few people on different systems to quickly verify it works. Specially AMD and old P4 users.

This one is called Alpha 8, and if we get many success reports and not too many bugreports in the next few hours, this will go into beta for the next few days, after which the final release will come.

Voodoo 9.5 alpha test webpage

What to test: timing and audio/gui should be stable, it should display proper cache information in "sysctl hw" output, and system profiler should show all information correctly. Everything should work.

If I am posting my test results in the wrong place please redirect me.

My system is retail dvd install using the boot-132 thread/instructions Munky started. I boot from the CD using an initrd.img ram disk. I have been using voodoo 9.4 with no problem for the past several days.

I added the voodoo 9.5 A7 to the cd and tried to boot using it. This is the Boot.plist entry used to select the 9.5 kernel

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">

	<key>Kernel</key>

	<key>Kernel</key>
	<string>rd(0,1)voodoo-9.5b7</string>
	<key>Kernel Flags</key>

<key>Timeout</key>
<string>7</string>

Now for the results. At the point where the messages have about finished and the login-window screen should appear the screen went black. That lasted about 2 minutes - with periodic disk activity. Then the screen turned blue but no cursor or any other objects displayed. That lasted about another 2 minutes. disk activity was rare, but there was some. Then the cursor was displayed, but it would not move. After another 2 minutes or so I gave up and powered down the system.

I tried 3 times. The results were basically the same every time. The system could not boot using this kernel.

As always, my system specs are in the sig.

Hi thanks a lot, we needed P4 test reports. It seems like a timer problem. The first thing I would suggest: could you please try booting with the boot options: fsb=200 busratio=15 This should override the auto-detection.

By the way the cpu log you posted on the other thread says this: hw.busfrequency = 400000000 (ie. 400 mhz fsb, 1600 memory bus). Are you sure it's 200/800 Mhz? You could also try fsb=400 busratio=15 while booting up. It appears that boot132 is sending incorrect fsb frequency to the kernel, or the kernel is detecting wrong bus ratio (ie. clock multiplier).

3. 64 Bit (Geekbench 64)

Yeah the kernel is made in such a way that it will act 99.5% like vanilla if an apple-supported CPU is present. Alternate methods are only used if really needed.

64bit is a known issue which we are trying to fix (it might not make it to the final release because I dont have ready access to a 64bit capable CPU, but we'll try our best).

Please keep the reports coming!

I think 64 Bit has not so high priority, because at least C2D Users can run vanilla and others, main users of your great kernel, didnt need 64 Bit

really running 32/64 Bit apps on slower P4 or AMDs. So fixes for all other will made those people happy - even if 64 Bit takes more time to fix.

Maybe 64 Bit becomes more interesting / a must have if more apps switch automatic in 64 Bit Mode (kernel offers 64 Bit / but crash with Alpha7) like

some upcoming DTP apps (Adobe) or Apple Video/DTP apps in 2009. Today not an really big problem to not have 64 Bit.

Maya (much US$!) or other Highend 64 Bit SW Users may buy real Mac Pro or at least an vanilla able C2D PC.

Thank you! Works fine . Wis boot flag busratio=10.5 fsb=200

1. GUI: markedly accelerated the reaction.

2. With sounds no problems.

3. Information about the system is displayed correctly. L2 cache also displayed correctly (4KB).

4. Sleep for me it finally worked. Thank you again.(At Voodoo 9.4, and other kernels did not work).

I have an dell inspiron 5150 and 5160 both p4 if you are interested in having me beta test.

Go "alone" to the homepage of the dev and download latest kernel.

Time of private betatest is over, now bigger+open betatest.

The kernel works with Pentium D 940@P5B-E PLUS. The 64-bit function seems to be enabled, but when I try to run the Chess and Geekbench 64-bit. It both returned almost the same error message.
