kylegypo
Ok this is not entirely a OSx86 question but I've just built a system with the intention of it becoming my 2nd hackintosh. Heres my parts. GIGABYTE GA-73VM-S2 Intel dual core 3.4 GHz arctic alpine 7 Hyper 580 PSU nvidia 256mb 250gb Seagate HDD ...Basically. My problem is that after pressing on (or using a screw driver) the system will turn off after less than 1 second. unless I press repeatedly about 12 times untill it stays on or clear the CMOS, which both ways it turns off after a random amount of time generally around 5 minutes. It manages to stay on when i unplug the 4 pin atx but I dont get any thing on the screen and I presume i shudnt be leaving that unplugged. The mobo is out of the case and on a wooden board. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. EDIT Strangely I've just gone back to it after 2 days of it been sat there, and its just started everytime, first time for the first 6 times. Still, if anyone can help me incase it comes back. EDIT 2 Yep problems back, could it be something to do with over heating? The processor and CPU cooler have both been used on a different system for a very long time and i've never had any problems. :S :S :S Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/124570-new-build-problems/ Share on other sites

kylegypo
What should the ACPI settings be? Is there any chance the wood might be causing this? it sounds stupid but i put the plastic part of a screw driver under the board to wedge it higher so that my PCI card could go in and it seems to be working every time and hasn't gone off yet :/ Thanks for the reply. Suprjacob
If your MB has a CMOS/BIOS reset feature, it might be a good idea to try that. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/124570-new-build-problems/#findComment-880971 Share on other sites

The ACPI settings are in the BIOS...... This perhaps suggests that it may be a loose connection.......or I hope not a "dry" solder joint........ kylegypo
I know where they are... but what should they be set to. I've just managed to install OSX onto my system, somehow it stayed on for ages and then seemed to turn on straight away everytime. But I got cocky and put it back into the case and now its back to its old ways. Also suprjacbob, as I said in my first post. Resetting the cmos works but after a restart or powerdown I have to reset cmos again. Suspend Mode S3 also called 'Save to RAM' or S1 or S1 and S3 depending on your BIOS options Also check that the CMOS battery is properly seated...... kylegypo
I cant even boot to BIOS now so thats something I'll have to try when it boots. Thanks Though Verdant. Do you have any other suggestions though? I've just started from scratch and built it onto a wooden board. Yet still I get less than 1 seconds worth of boot time. I've read that some mobos have a safety feature thats shuts everything down if its grounded? I've read that some mobos have a safety feature thats shuts everything down if its grounded? It is quite likely that modern MOBOs would have such a safety feature.......does your MOBO have any power-on and/or power standby LEDs on it?...... I suggest you disconnect the PC from AC supply, remove all cards including video card and RAM from the MOBO, disconnect all connectors to PSU, HDDs, fans etc., and remove the CMOS battery for at least 30 minutes.......then replace connectors, install cards, RAM and CMOS battery.......then connect AC and switch on...... Suprjacob
It looks like you have a bad board. RMA it if possible. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/124570-new-build-problems/#findComment-881656 Share on other sites
kylegypo
It looks like you have a bad board. RMA it if possible. I bought the board from "PC World" not sure if they would take it back as when I bought it I asked if they did refunds and they said not if its been taken out of the box... there idiots to be honest. Also This would be the 3rd board thats done this. Everything is new apart from the CPU and cooler. They are from an old system which basically blew up due to a friend of mine touching a switch on the back of the PSU. Pretty certain it was to change the voltage for different regions i.e the US? I left the battery out overnight to clear the CMOS, It started first time but then shutdown before I had chance to change settings in the BIOS. Now its back to its old ways. MOBOs not working properly........common factor the PSU........worth checking out I would say......are its output voltages stable.......etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/124570-new-build-problems/#findComment-882336 Share on other sites
kylegypo
first was a Asus (model started with P, had built in wireless) and the others are 2 different models of GIGABYTE. Do most computer stores have the equipment to test the PSU? Thanks for this Verdant. kylegypo
Im in the UK. What should I be looking for when I buy one. Pretty poor at the minute so it could be a week or 2 I do have 2 old systems that work that I could use the PSU from? Would you recommend this? Im not sure if they are ATX or whatever but I guess if there aren't enough connections then its wrong EDIT Ok I used a different PSU, It didnt have the extra 4 pin connector that sits next to the 20 pin but the outcome is exactly the same as the previous PSU.
