I've done that method... Still fails. That was how I got into all of this on here from doing searches and I thought for sure that if anywhere here would be where all things would be the best. And it is. :hysterical: So yeah. :D

I'm gonna have to figure out why they keep failing.

What program do you guys use to burn the discs? (Type11, PeteRock, Darkten, Unaclocker)

Thanks!

Ok, so like many others I've been silently following all of these posts for a while now, and wanted to say thanks to darkten and everyone else for your hardwork - really appreciate it!

I seemed to have some similar problems to Equaliser with the install. I managed to get it installed, but with no sound, and an upgrade to 10.5.5 hasn't helped on that front. But my main issue is that even having run all of the apps through xslimmer, I'm still using 12gb.

Given the lack of sound (and a rather large install) I was planning on reformatting the hd from the bios and doing a completely fresh install. Now this is probably a stupid question, but how to I get to the a: prompt to enter format c:? I'd also like to know whether the install size of the msi osx iso is any smaller than the darkten version?

THANKS

Oh one last thing, with regards to availability, I received day after delivery, but I'm UK based.

I just want to thank all of you for the help and advice and for making it possible for noobs like me to have a great mini laptop. Thanks francola, Petrock, Type11, Darkten, Unaclocker and everyone else that has posted information and how too's.

This is a new install boot123 image that does the install of the kext and bootloader for you into the EFI partition. It also launches the audio installer for you so all you have to do to get a working install from retail dvd AND be safe from messing it up in the future is run one script

1. Boot from iso

http://rapidshare.com/files/152870825/dellmini.iso.zip.html

2. Once booted pull disk and insert Leopard Retail DVD

3. Install will fail at the end but this is ok reboot

4. on reboot boot from boot123 iso above again and enter -f when booting from your hard drive

5. on the iso above mount the image install.dmg. Run the script MiniScript.

6. answer questions

7. reboot

8. install apple updates

(9. after updates if something doesn't work boot with -f)

should have a fully working system that loads kext from efi partition.

I have tested everal times now but always to internal drive. However as long as you get the right drive identifier (the script displays your current boot identifier) it should work fine form external

This method is the easiest install right now and also has the bonus of full time machine retore support and not having to worry about reinstalling the boot loader or kext if main partition is wiped.

Enjoy!

darkten: I had no issues mounting the efi partition in 10.5.5 however i had modified it in 10.5 before upgrading

...however it has a *wee* flaw :D

If you use this method, likely due to the bootloader being used, you will have an easily identifiable fake mac, because you, and all of your friends, will have the same serial number: W1234567890

Until this is fixed, I would not use this.

I thought it might be a kext issue, so i swapped all of mine in. Apparently whatever fake EFI is being used is too old/fake/simplistic/broken to properly use AppleSMBIOS/AppleSMBIOSEFI to get your machine's unique serial number.

Perhaps there is an updated/upgrade efi set to fix this, or a chameleon that works with it correctly?

Sooo...

I installed the retail DVD onto 8gb flash drive and then used the first bootloader and VIOLA!!! I'm posting from the hackintosh right now!! I'm thrilled. Let me know if you guys need anything or want somebody to test stuff. I'm always hacking my stuff. :):wacko:

Mr Wolff,

which iso and method did you use? thanks looking for some data points on the one I posted last night!

...however it has a *wee* flaw :unsure:

Are you sure the serial number of the other method does not have this flaw as well? Or maybe it was the iAtkos method. I surely remember one of them in system profiler has this as the serial number as well. I will see what I can do but I don't think it is worse than iatkos install everyone uses or the other mthod which ever one shows this as serial as well.

*Update* So iAtkos and the MSI wind version also show the serial as W1234567890

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/10/09/the-little-leopard-laptop/

appears it is due to AppleSMBIOSEFI.kext

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=108606

in the code it has hard coded

OSData * serialNumber = OSData::withCapacity(11);

if (serialNumber)

{

serialNumber->appendBytes("W1234567890", 11);

serialNumber->appendBytes(NULL, 1);

UInt8 length = serialNumber->getLength() - 1;

const char *serialNumberString = (char *) serialNumber->getBytesNoCopy();

OSData * data = OSData::withCapacity(43);

if (data)

{

data->appendBytes(serialNumberString + (length - 3), 3);

data->appendBytes(NULL, 10);

data->appendBytes(serialNumberString, length);

data->appendBytes(NULL, 43 - length - 10 - 3);

rootNode->setProperty("serial-number", data);

data->release();

}

rootNode->setProperty("IOPlatformSerialNumber", serialNumberString);

serialNumber->release();

}

So not sure how it is ever unique if we use this kext? Perhaps you had a different kext or were not using this one at some point? Just dont see if this kext is used how it is anything but W1234567890

That said I don't know anything other than coolbook that does serial checking but you can still activate at least once even if it is a common serial as he has a central server to track activations. i know machine serial checking may change in the future but I don't think it is an immediate concern as the other distros I looked at do this as well.

Also if you want something different than the stock serial I made this kext with serial W81040MSYK0, yeah yeah I know it could also have the same problem if a lot of people use it but it is different than all the other distros right now. I can add it to my iso if you think it might help.

I imagine this method still requires typing [9f] and [80] at the boot: prompts?

Is that correct?

Thanks!

Whoa pal! Same team, 'member? A little touchy, I feel.

It is a very easy thing to test...I did :)

All you have to do is boot from the iso i made. I'll bet your serial won't be 1234567890....

As I am also a Really-for-Real card-carrying ADC MacOS X dev...I assure you that you won't only have a problem with coolbook reading the hardware serial number. It is pretty much standard operating procedure :D

When i don't boot up from whatever bootloader you are using, I have a real, unique serial number...

When i use the same exact kext set and boot up from what you made, W1234567890.

Try it...then let's fix it. The fact that other stuff is wrong too isn't a really good selling point; our aim is to be better :)

I found this forum yesterday and immediately went to purchase Leo Retail, External Drive, etc. to convert my Mini 9 to a Mini Mac. The first go-round, I ran into trouble because the external drive wouldn't start the Leo Retail DVD. So, I went back to the store, bought a different drive, and the install was a success. I followed the instruction closely, and placed the Chameleon and the ALC268_Installer 1 files on my desktop and unzipped/installed both. Restarted the computer and everything works great...with a few exceptions.

1)WiFi works fine (but the signal strength fluctuates often even though I am not moving around...does this indicate a problem?)

2)Audio doesn't work. In System Prefs it says "No output devices found". However, in "System Profiler" it states "Intel High Definition Audio" under the Hardware Section for Audio.

3)Bluetooth doesn't work and under System Profiler it states "No Information Found"

4)When I boot up, I have to hit Enter to load up OS X through the boot loader

I've run all Software updates. I am now running 10.5.5. However, the above problems still exist. After installing update, I had to run ALC268 again to get the wifi to start working again. But...still no sound.

ANY IDEAS? I could really use some help.

I too am experiencing this. Is there something that can be modified in maybe the com.apple.boot.plist?

Thanks

you can use osx86tools to edit the bootstrings and take off either the delay or click silent boot which should stop all prompts etc..

interesting i also have the W1234567890 serial number when mine boots up and used your iso too....

will have a look at my kexts and see what's missing!

I just added:

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>8</string>

to the com.apple.boot.plist, but I did not realize that it could be done with osx86tools. Thanks for the tip!
