P4 800mhz

512mb ram

geforce 4

20gb HDD

it runs it pretty good

Pentium 4 800 mhz? I don't ever remember a Pentium 4 coming out under 1 ghz now, which was the whole thing with the pentium 4.

munky, nice example you're setting there, being a mod and all. :D

so, finally grabbed a few mins to try some more stuff on my own setup. my wifi card needs the 10.4.5 IONetworkingFamily and IO80211Family kexts to work as Airport. I'd tried a few things to get them to work from the ramdisk and tonight I succeeded.

anyway, I put them both in the ramdisk image, and set all the 'OSBundleRequired' to Network-Root and overrode ALL of the CFBundleVersion and CFBundleShortVersionString settings (in both the main kext Info.plist and in each plugin. anyway, upshot is it seems to be working. however, it reminded me that i also needed to tweak a setting in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist to set the wifi to be interface 1 when there's no wired ethernet.

so i have two choices: 1) make the patch (its minimal - changing a 0 to a 1), or 2) enable wired ethernet so i can continue modification-free.

i prefer 2.... :D

vbetts: nickhe already stated that the machine was underclocked. he knows my 'crappy' statement was made in jest. but, yknow, thanks for your tuppenceworth there....

sweet... it works. posting this from my hackintosh, booted up from a disk with ZERO modifications. :)

initrd contains IONetworkingFamily with a tweak for my GigE card, IO80211Family with tweakage for my wifi as Airport, Natit for my X1800. Only major thing not working is audio at this stage.

once i move to booting from the hard disk, I plan to replace these patches with efi strings.

going to try updating to 10.5.4 and whatever else Software Update has in store for me... :)

intriguing...

once i installed the 10.5.4 update, i could no longer boot. i copied System.kext (unmodified 10.5.4 version) onto my initrd and reburned the ISO.

now i can boot properly, all apple updates applied, and still ZERO modifications to the installed OS.

at least it confirmed my suspicions, that System.kext and the kernel should go hand-in-hand. :)

EDIT: And System Profiler now works correctly. (Before it said 'There was an error gathering the information' or something. Bet that was System.kext related.)

EDIT2: hmm.. one more update in Software Update... a Security Update. will apply that and report.

EDIT3: booted up fine, all working.. Software Update reports no new updates for my computer. :) I did notice on boot that IPFirewire (or FirewireIP, i forget) had a link/load error - version of IONetworkingFamily found was 9.9.9 (my edit to make sure it was 'preferred'), requested version was 1.6.0 (the real version). I guess this means I need to move the firewire kexts if I want IP over Firewire...

interesting discovery... my boot-132 disc with System.kext does NOT allow me to boot the retail DVD. tres odd. maybe its cos retail is 10.5.0 or something, but anyway i always get 'Still waiting for root device'.

handily, i had an older burned boot-132 disc without System.kext, and that worked fine.

also discovered that my piece of {censored} PC cant seem to boot from USB, at least not from a GPT disk.

so im now installing vanilla onto a SATA disk for further tinkering... ;)

so my machine wont boot any disk which has Chameleon installed. at first i thought it was USB... but I tried with a SATA disk, and still no joy. what the hell?

one thing, the 'SATA' disk in question is actually IDE plugged into a little IDE->SATA adaptor. but i've booted OSes (ok WinXP) from that disk before, surely that shouldnt be a problem?

sigh... going to have to scrap the install on my actual SATA disk i guess...

I have a disc to boot the Retail DVD and another one to boot Vanilla installation with the drivers, I think it's organized like that ;)
