munky Posted September 13, 2008 Author Share Posted September 13, 2008 64-bit seems to be working perfectly on my machine with stagexnu. Chess, Java6 and Lightroom 2.0 all ran fine in 64-bit mode. First time ever on my box ;-) Also, the technique of using the EFI partition is applicable to setups which can run vanilla kernel as well as machines like mine which can't, which means it's greater than the scope of this thread. I think, however, I'll wait until the devs ok a release of the bootloader before I create a new thread with the howto. Er... you might want to reread my post. munky Posted September 13, 2008 Author Share Posted September 13, 2008 ok, here's the thing: The following is required to run vanilla kernel in 32-bit mode: - Family 6 processor - XD / NX - Execute Disable - PAE - Physical Address Extension - HPET - High Precision Event Timers (mobo feature) - SSE3 - Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 The following is required to run vanilla kernel in 64-bit mode: - All of the above, plus: - SSSE3 - Supplemental SSE3 If there exists a 64-bit proc which meets everything except SSSE3, -legacy flag would let it boot in 32-bit mode. Edit: I've seen it on wikipedia: XD bit (an NX bit implementation): supported by 3x0J, 3x5J, and all Intel64-compatible models but mine is 320 only.
