solaar
I don't know if this is old news but I found it quite interesting.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7540282.stm Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119325-soon-the-end-of-windows/ Share on other sites
(MoC)
Yeah Windows 7 may be the last version of the coveted Microsoft Windows family. I say may be because Fuji is going to be the last windows release. Sounds good to me, I actually look forward to this. DOS and 95 was revolutionary when I first touched it, now let's see what Microsoft will come up with next. I actually expect it to be something nobody ever saw before! Superhai
Well, whatever they come up with, it will still need hardware and be able to control it. Maybe they finally are able to make a simple, fast and pure OS. Then companies including MS can make layer on tops of that, be it game machine, network client or whatever. sportsman
Looking forward to it, whatever the next thing is. The only problem is, in typical Windows style, the next big thing will have so many bugs it will probably bring about the end of civilization as we know it. Soliber
Atleast in the beginning, Midori won't be something for John Doe. For the moment, cloud computing is still something for the corporations and I don't see that changing anytime soon. danielmramos
You know, if Microsoft ever had the guts to dump windows legacy OS stuff they would be competing almost on an even playing field with Apple. I doubt they would be able to replicate their past success as nobody would trust them to shoot up and get hooked to their next drug of an OS. The death of windows could be a huge boon to innovation. Imagine the possibilities. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119325-soon-the-end-of-windows/#findComment-847505 Share on other sites
Soliber
The death of Windows would send 90% of the business world into spasms >_> Though I do agree, it would be nice if they could just start all over from scratch and not haul along any previous mistaken decisions. But that's not what Midori is for, not anytime soon anyway >_> Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119325-soon-the-end-of-windows/#findComment-848276 Share on other sites
KibosJ
Midori sounds like an interesting idea, and that's what it is, an idea. Microsoft Research is doing this, it is nothing to do with the Windows team or any other team at Microsoft. It is just research and there is absolutely nothing to say this will ever happen. It is interesting and I hope Microsoft make something of it, but it's unlikely to occur any time in the forseeable future. Windows 7 is still in the works and coming along quite okay And just to note, Fiji is an update to Media Centre in Vista, it's not a new Operating System. KibosJ
So, does this mean Apple will finally have more power in their hands? I think it probably will, but this isn't going to happen for ages if it happens at all, and there is no saying this will be targeted at home users but more to the business/enterprise users. Kane Adams
cloud computing Will never work well in the US with the as long as the ISP control what we do on the internet. Right now we have them wanting to provide internet services and they want to provide cable services and with the internet going more and more with online video/TV you start messing with their bread&butter. So they even the playing field by capping your speeds, throttling traffic and what ever else they feel is in their best interest. What Do You Do When the Cloud Shuts Down? "Can you trust your data to the cloud? For users of an online storage service called The Linkup, formerly known as MediaMax, the answer turned out to be a resounding "no." The Linkup shut down on Aug. 8 after losing access to as much as 45% of its customers' data. "When we looked at some individual accounts, some people didn't have any files, and some people had all their files," The Linkup CeO Steve Iverson admits. None of the affected users will get their lost data back. Iverson called it a "worst-case scenario."" http://tech.slashdot.org/tech/08/08/12/1113259.shtml Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/119325-soon-the-end-of-windows/#findComment-854190 Share on other sites
motorhead89
Well with the addition of virtual machines and gearing towards online storage i see one of two things. The occasional internet user who may not need the full functionality of a computer and uses and online version with online software and online hosting. But for the person who needs full functionality they will use a local version like something that we have now.
