sheeplover Posted August 4, 2008 Share Posted August 4, 2008 .mkv stands for the "Matroska Open Standard" container format. http://www.matroska.org/ It is no codec but a container just like AVI that can contain video and audio coded in various formats like divx, xvid, ... You can find more information on the website above, an extractor, to get the content out of an .mkv container can be found here: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/iMkvExtract.shtml And you can use the export function of VLC to repack the video into a regular avi-container.
