Final Cut Pro 6 and Kalyway 10.5.2

Hello,

This is my first post. I've managed to find solutions to all the problems I've encountered so far. I have a fully working Kalyway 10.5.2 setup running on a P5NE-SLI.

I have installed a legal copy Final Cut Studio 2 and applied Apple updates. I had a few problem with it crashing on load but fixed those by sorting out my primary network device name and trashing preferences. It's now all working fine except for one thing.

When I am capturing through firewire all goes well for about 10 minutes. After this amount of time the computer crashes. Mouse freezes and a keyboard locks up but capture preview continues. If I stop the capture before the crash everything works fine.

Anybody else had this problem? Is it something to do with the firewire not working 100%?. The next step I was going to take was to test the firewire with iMovie.

Any help would be much apreciated.

i've had that problem on a completely legal g5 fcp setup. There is so much to go wrong from the tape to the hard drive. When it happens i try to move systematically from the tape to the hard drive replacing what I can. If nothing helps it I can some what rule out hardware.

Reinstalling does wonders for FCP, but only after you use something like App zapper to get rid of all the gunk.

Actually... now that i think of it, is the hard drive you are capturing to FAT32? 10 minutes of video could possibly go over the file size limit.

im preparing myself to install FCP Studio 2 on my new hackintosh.... i remember installing it on my mini almost a year ago, it was a pain and took forever!!!

Thinking of waiting and cloning my system, getting the firewire and kernal panics worked out first.

adrock42,

That's interesting that you had that issue on a fully Mac setup. It would rule out the possibility that this is caused by some hackintosh problem. The scratch disk I'm using is formatted as FAT32 so the size limit could well be a factor. It's something I hadn't considered but seems a likely candidate for problems. I'll try reformatting it as HFS, see if that helps.

Thanks.

Hmmmmm "after about 10 minutes"... with DV that adds up to about 4 GB Data... are there any IDE-devices on your system, or JMicron Controller?

How much RAM is installed?

There are posts of avoiding Jmicron glitches by using AHCI... are you using AHCI?

The remark about not capturing to FAT32 would also be a red-flag here.

Hope you get it sorted out...

regards, ninetto

I too originally had problems with data transfer via Firewire from digicam to iMovie on my Hackintosh (10.5.2 on Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus). Solution that worked for me:

1. Check to confirm that the kernel and System.kext versions match - if they do not you will have problems with both USB and Firewire device mounting/unmounting on the desktop.....

Check kernel version via Terminal by typing at the $ prompt

uname -a

and check System.kext version via the following path ~/System/Library/Extensions/ and then find System.kext in Extensions folder, and highlight and right-click to "Show Package Contents" and then double-click on "Info.plist" and scroll down to "<key>CFBundleVersion</key>" and check what is between the strings below: <string>9.x.x</string>

If they are not the same then run the Mysticus C* USB Fix v1.3 see http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=95789

Also check that you are not attempting to use your onboard LAN chipset and/or are using the nForceEthernet.kext......nForce chipset MOBOs i.e. 650i, 680i etc. have major problems with the onboard LAN causing system freezes..... :)

2. If you have more than 2GB RAM installed in Dual Channel mode, then modify

the com.apple.Boot.plist file as follows: (see my blog for further info. as to why....)

1. Go to the Terminal, and at the $ prompt, type in

sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

2. Enter your password when requested. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor within the Terminal window.

3. Type in (without any spaces anywhere)

maxmem=3072

between <string> and </string> under <key>Kernel Flags</key>.

4. Move the cursor the Terminal window down until it no longer moves, then press ^O and then Enter, to save the modified com.apple.Boot.plist file.

5. Press ^X to Exit and type "exit" at the $ prompt to log out of the Terminal and then close and quit Terminal.

3. Then whenever you wish to do a data transfer via Firewire from digicam to Final Cut Pro 6 on your Hackintosh, then boot with "cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v" (without quotes). After the data transfer is complete to a file on your HDD, you can reboot as normal to use the 4 cores when video encoding etc......

Then you should hopefully have no problems due to USB or Firewire I/O errors...... :)

that sounds like a lot of work. The cheep fw 400 dynex card I got works OBO with FCP, and shows up the same in the hac and the g5. it was no more then $25 I believe. aparently OHCI boards that work cross platform are the way to go.

I never can keep up with DV time conversion to Hard drive space. I know its somewhere around 13 gig per hour. I had a student scratching to Fat32 once and the files would go and sit on the disk, when the student was finished we watched the file just disappear. He did this for about two hours till we figured out the problem.

I gave your comments a go and it all works fine :P ! Thanks.

For anyone that's interested, this is what I did:

I had already checked my kernel matched my System.kext as explained by haxi to solve USB hotplug problems.

I reformatted my scratch disk as HFS+

I removed quicktime and reinstalled it as I heard this could cause problems

I edited the com.apple.Boot.plist as instructed by haxi

When I need to capture I use the cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v boot flag. It's a bit annoying but does make capturing completely stable so it's worth the effort.

When I'm doing anything else other than capturing I just boot as normal.

Glad to be of help..... :P Booting with -v is not necessary for stability but I like verbose booting via -v as I can keep an eye out for any booting problems etc.... :P

The motherboard you use will crash everyday.  It has to do with your kernel. P5N-E SLI cannot install vanilla. and wihtout vanilla, don't expect to run any heavy applications like FCP or CS3. Get yourself a decent motherboard that supports your purpose.

I have tried 2 different comp with that motherboard exhaustively.  it does not run correctly.  I used Blackmagic and also firewire. when it crashes, you might be able to savage what's been captured by going into the directory.  Good luck. I suggest Gigabyte motherboards. I tried 3 and all runs vanilla.  if you want to know specific motherboard. pm me.
