I am trying to install 10.4.4/5 patched to a partition on an external USB2 drive, but no drives/partitions show up with the Disk Utility other than "VMWare Virtual IDE CDRom Drive" which is 4.4GB (it is the image).

Under VMWare settings, I have the correct HD/partition checked, but it is like VMWare does not see my HD...does VMWare not work with USB drives?

EDIT:

Hmm, I think I may be making some progress...I see there is an option in VMWare to mount/enable external USB devices, but it has to un-mount it from the host machine first, and it keeps telling me that it is in use, and to close any programs using it. The only problem is that the only program which seems to be using it is VMWare, and I am not runnign anything else.

Yes, after some more tweaking, this does appear to be the problem...it is a sort of Catch-22. In order to have the external drive be recognized by VMWare, I have to add it as a HD under the VMWare settings, but this means that VMWare is accessing the drive which in turn means that I cannot un-mount it in windows in order to mount it for the OSX installation. Argghh, this sucks.

I suppose I could just risk and try to go and do a native install, but I don't have any DVD-R disks to use, and I am also afraid if screwing up the MBR....

have your hdd in VMware been setup as a SCSI device instead of an IDE device?
