H8TR
Thanks for the reply evilduck. I got it working by just updating to 10.5.3. Since USB didn't work, I just networked to my MacBook and copied the files I needed. This is so sick. My $200 Mac. Full 1920x1200 res and hardware QE/CI. evilduck
Thanks for the reply evilduck. I got it working by just updating to 10.5.3. Since USB didn't work, I just networked to my MacBook and copied the files I needed. This is so sick. My $200 Mac. Full 1920x1200 res and hardware QE/CI. Yeah, I think it has to do with default install options on the Kalyway disc and the kernel it installs by default. I fixed it, then got too curious to just leave my system sitting at 10.5.2 and did the full upgrade path, the problem never resurfaced. And yeah, I own two Macbooks. This $150 experiment was worth every penny. As long as I have a more powerful machine available for actual work (.net programmer/flash dev/open source enthusiast), this handles all the lightweight stuff just fine. After the success with this, I'll probably try a bigger better setup soon.
dylenol
I am not sure what the difference between the GMA950 graphic driver set you linked to is between the default set with Kalyway 10.5.2 but thank you so much for posting it. I was giving up hope that the artifacts would never go away in Photoshop. I get a little tearing when I drag a window but it is really not a big deal. So for people searching for the same problem I had... here are some easily found keywords: GMA950 artifact fix! Just check the first post of this thread! smithsmg
I like my D945GCLF board but have questions: Is it possible to put all patches/drivers on initrd image for boot-132 method? I try to put GMA950 kext to initrd , but it did not work for me and at end I just install it to Leopard system partition. Is it possible to have system complete vanilla? mega
Once the computer wakes from sleep the CD/DVD Drive continously tried to open and close itself. It will not stop and pressing the open button does nothing. Is there anyway around this or a fix? As of now I just disabled sleep all together and it works fine. try a sata cdrom drive instead of ide, my shuttle and my dd945gclf2 both do this with ide drives

dustinsterk
Ok....the link that evilduck posted worked GREAT and I have successully updated to 10.5.5 . I only had 1 issue......the USB ports!! After some research I have found that the IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext extension does not load for some reason. After further research I have fixed the USB issue and also the REBOOT issue! The issue seems to be when the kernel version ("uname -a" which shows 9.4) does NOT match the system.kext version. Downloading this patch (USB Fixes 2 in 1) seemed to do the trick: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=f388fb4...2db6fb9a8902bda Just run the installer and select customize....then select "USB Mount Fix" and then check kernel "9.4.0" and then check "finalize". Reboot and you should be good to go! If that still does not work give this a shot as well as per this link below (I did this before I even found or ran the patch so I did not change it after installing because things are working): http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=95789 "UPDATE (09/28/08): I just figured that after updating to 10.5.5, I started getting USB drives not mounting problem again. I am still using 9.2.0 kernel and system.kext. It appears that since 10.5.5, the IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext is now not included as a plugin in the IOUSBFamily.kext, but separately in Extensions folder. Somehow with 9.2.0 kernel and system.kext, the kernel never picks up the updated massstorageclass kext. So I went ahead and copied this kext to the plugin folder of IOUSBFamily.kext and corrected the permissions. The USB drives mount fine now with updated USB kexts but older kernel and system.kext. I have not investigated extensively, so there may be some other cause. But if anybody cares, then it solved this for me." I only have one more question. Can someone verify that the IOUSBMassStorageClass kext version after upgrading to 10.5.5 us really 2.0.2???? dustinsterk
I know this is a bit off topic, but for those of you who have the Apex MI-008 case, can someone take a picture and show me where the spring in the front panel goes. Mine popped out and I have no clue where it goes. Also, do how you guys get USB working? I need to install 10.5.3 combo update from my Flash Drivebut my USB ports don't work. None of the 4 in the back nor the 2 connected to the USB header. My case is not exactly that but it is an Apex. The spring goes on the CDROM flap...see pics below. gonyr
Just ordered my parts, including the dual core board. They are in stock at newegg (or at least they were last night). Once it arrives, I'm sure I'll be back for help. My initial plan is Kalyway 10.5.2, and I may never even try to update beyond that. If everything is working well, I'll be very hesitant to mess with it.

I would suggest going up to 10.5.4 as a minimum. Hey everyone....I just wanted to say that I just build a D945GCLF2 machine with a 500 gig SATA hdd, 2 gig memory, IDE CD/DVD burner with the Kalyway 10.5.2 and it went GREAT!!! The only thing left still to do is fix my sleep issue. Once the computer wakes from sleep the CD/DVD Drive continously tried to open and close itself. It will not stop and pressing the open button does nothing. Is there anyway around this or a fix? As of now I just disabled sleep all together and it works fine. Other than that I have upgraded to 10.5.4 just fine.... but DO NOT upgrade to 10.5.5. I have tried a few times and hosed the system with a kernal panic eror. I have not tried the guide posted by "EvilDuck" so I cannot say if that works or not. Other than that perfect fast stable system running at 1680x1050 resolution. Thanks again for a great thread and everyones help on making a cheap hackint0sh! UPDATE: The Link posted by EvilDuck works perfect and I am running 10.5.5 just fine! Thanks again!!! But you haven't provided a description of the problem anywhere on this forum either, other than "I've hosed my system 4 times trying to upgrade" (that provides no useful information). It sounds like you're either not following the instructions correctly (or interpreting them wrong), or that your installation method prior to 10.5.5 has deviated from the thread's methods, in which case, you need to explain what you did differently to get you to your current state. [additionally, you're using a different motherboard than this thread/guide began with, you can't expect everything to be the same, I know the dual core version uses a different northbridge, and soundcard, you might check for issues with those also]

H8TR
My case is not exactly that but it is an Apex. The spring goes on the CDROM flap...see pics below. Thanks, that helps. I actually updated from 10.5.2 Kalyway to 10.5.5 straight from Apple's servers Here are few more screenshots: Tried 10.5.2 to 10.5.5 through software update. Caused kernel panic. Had to reinstall Kalyway 10.5.2. I give up on 10.5.5. This instructions posted by evilduck aren't noob friendly at all. I'm obviously doing something wrong so unless someone does like a YouTube vid or comes up with an easier way to get 10.5.5, I suggest to stay at 10.5.4 if you don't really know what your doing. Also, in the com.apple.boot.plist file how can get 16:10 support. I modified it to show 1920x1200 but it only displays 1600x1200. If anyone has info, it would be greatly appreciated. wall0p
So I received may parts and after 10.5.2 install, I tried rebooting and it didn't work. I turned off the computer I can't even boot my board anymore. Thats it. I hate having to RMA, it always takes forever. Everything is plugged it correctly but the board wont boot up. Power supply is working, chipset fan is spinning. HDD and DVD drive aren't working anymore. Nothing displays on the screen. The board won't turn off. If I turn off the power supply, then it will. But if I turn on the PSU then the board turns on (or at least the chipset fan keeps spinning). I don't even have to press the button to turn on the comp. H8TR, I've got the same problem, I started using svideo to configure BIOS on plasma screen so never know if it worked on lcd - then moved to the 17" monitor (but no output, lcd led flickers to green then sleep back to yellow). I also cannot poweroff without killing the ac plug. How did you go about fixing yours?
