mrbonkers
i was reading through isolinux. is it possible to boot the retail dvd using the usb method? i have not tested it out myself because i lost my thumbdrive. so someone out there please test this if it work first boot boot-132 using the cd and boot the retail dvd. when asked to press F8 for more option, press it and take note of (31,1)Mac OS X Install DVD or something similar. now edit isolinux.cfg or syslinux.cfg(which ever that is the cfg file. not too sure) so that it will boot to (31,1): DEFAULT /mboot.c32 /boot --- /initrd.img APPEND hd31 1 then boot using the usb and with the retail dvd inside your drive. if it does not work try this DEFAULT /chain.c32 /boot --- /initrd.img APPEND hd31 1 chain.32 uploaded below please report back if it does or does not work. chain.c32.zip
adrian mak
nothing. dont worry about it Then, I just put the retail Apple original unmodified leopard DVD in the dvd drive and press enter. It will load the dvd and start the installation process (if everything fine )
MACinized
mine is hd(126, 0) so i added APPEND hd126 0 & got this: boot: COM32 Multiboot loader v0.2. Copyright (C) 2005-2006 Tim Deegan. mrbonkers
The kernel would be /mboot.c32 and append would be hd126 0 /boot --- /initrd.img
MACinized
the syslinux.cfg file in my boot-132 loader contains this: PROMPT 0 TIMEOUT 90 DEFAULT /mboot.c32 /boot --- /initrd.img APPEND hd126 0 is there anything else i should do/change? UPDATE: btw, i'm booting from a partition of my hdd. this is the working syslinux.cfg for me: PROMPT 0 TIMEOUT 90 DEFAULT /mboot.c32 /boot --- /initrd.img APPEND biosdev=80 then i get the options to boot from the 3 partitions of my hdd: hd(0,1) (this is my boot-132 loader) hd(0,2) Macintosh hd(0,3) (just another partition i'm reserving for win xp) downloaded the attached chain.c32 file & included it in my boot-132 loader (1st partition). edited the syslinux.cfg to wit: PROMPT 0 TIMEOUT 90 DEFAULT /chain.c32 /boot --- /initrd.img APPEND hd0 2 then i get this: boot0: MBR boot0: done SYSLINUX 3.63 2008-04-10 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2008 H. mrbonkers
PROMPT 0 TIMEOUT 90 DEFAULT /chain.c32 /boot --- /initrd.img APPEND hd0 2 should be PROMPT 0 TIMEOUT 90 DEFAULT /chain.c32 /boot --- /initrd.img APPEND hd126 0 using mboot.c32, was it successful? ninetto
Is valid this method for MOBO Gigabite EP35-DS3P with a Core2Quad? Thanx. works fantastic! just use THIS package (tseugs link to LS8package) to add necessary kexts. Plus PCWiz toolbox for shutdown fix. THAT'S ALL! For a perfect gigahack. (Sig not updated yet, running 10.5.4 retail on a p35-ds3p) regards, n.

MACinized
should be PROMPT 0 TIMEOUT 90 DEFAULT /chain.c32 /boot --- /initrd.img APPEND hd126 0 using mboot.c32, was it successful? didn't work this way too. tried it first with APPEND hd126 0 w/out success then tried it w/ my retail leopard install booting off a partition (see my whole post above). then realized that the APPEND code has no effect on the boot up. johnmelano
OK, so this is very interesting, but I'm on page 7 and there's a lot of information, which makes this kind of messy. Can anyone post a step by step guide for installation from scratch, that is, booting from the ISOs offered here, and which one is best, and then running disk utility to format a whole drive and then install Leopard on it, and then what to modify exactly to make it believe you have a real Mac so it does software updates from Apple. That would make things a lot simpler for those of us who are just geeks but not computer scientists. The first post starts with a few steps, but then there are several posts saying you have to modify this, that and the other, and unfortunately I don't have all the time in the world to go through all the trial and error. Thanks, JM

NoobCompositor
Kudos to all the brains at work! You guys are amazing. Is this the easiest way to install OSX on an Intel PC? Why would I do this versus going with the 10.5.2 Kalyway DVD, followed by updates? What are the pros/cons? Any clarification would be appreciated.
