sonotone
Here, process detailled (with kexts for Laptops). Sorry for my rough english. ]Well, a little guide to boot on retail installation wthout cd/usb. At least, you still need a CD to boot the Retail DVD. Requirement: - A Retail Mac OSX installation DVD - A CD to Boot installation DVD - A HDD partitioned as GUID - files below To do: - Folllow method to burn and boot from retail DVD: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=113288 Method 1: Once installation finished, you need to install chameleon on your system disk. Download Chameleon bootloader, then replace "boot" by the one from "additional files" below ("boot" comes from original Iso project). Install it. Method 2: (another bootable system needed): download "OSX86Tools Utility". Then, right click on app —> show package contents —>Contents —>Resources; Replace "boot" file with the one from "additional files" below. Run OSX86Tools, select "Install EFI/Run FDISK", "Reinstall Source files then "run script" and install chameleon on the Retail system partition. Method 3: Install Chameleon then copy "boot" into your root folder. - Unpack "extra" archive below into the root Retail system folder. - Install NVinject and ClamShellDisplay in System/Library/Extensions/ with kexthelper. - Eject CD, Reboot your Retail System and Voilà, (almost) unmodified system with easy boot kexts manipulations Known Issues: - After 10.5.3 update; Nvinject or NVKush should be placed in System/Library/Extensions/ (or no QE) - ClamShellDisplay don't works until you place it in System/Library/Extensions/ - AppleHDA still need to be patched, just reinstall it after updates (if you use an installer, remove ALCInject or HDAEnabler from System/Library/Extensions/ folder). - If Airport is displayed as not configured, go to System Preferences—>Network—> Airport; Advanced—>TCP/IP—> Renew DHCP Lease. Special Thanks to Chun-Nan and SuperHai, who created vanilla's compatibles kexts. Extra Archive Content: -AppleACPIBatteryManager -AppleACPIPS2Nub -ApplePS2Controller -AppleSMBIOSEFI -dsmos -HDAEnabler -IntelCPUPMDisabler http://www.mediafire.com/?gijyuxjnyex Additional Files archive Content: -boot -NVKush -ClamShellDisplay http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ttttd1nlewe Put kexts you need in Extra folder to run your system, some of these above are specifically designed for Laptops. Ajarn
Used the boot iso with dmos, IntelCPUPMDisabler, SMBIOSEnabler, ApplePS2Controller, and ACPIPS2Nub and am currently updating =) Motherboard: DFI P35 T2RS Keyboard/Mouse: USB Could have probably done without the PS2 kexts and it would have still booted, which is awesome (only 3 kexts needed!) Currently have external harddrive icons, but that can be fixed with the ICHX kext. Edit: Update to 10.5.4 went without a hitch. Haven't changed anything but com.apple.boot for efi-gfx string. Still booting with bootloader cd, will try moving the bootloader to the retail partition next.

Atze de Vries
Is seems that the original iso has problems with the HMBT script. The filename of the iso differs from the iso name in the script. sonotone
To help people and be more organized, i've opened a "ressources" thread in Leopard Installation section, where people who made their own ISO, INITRD or EXTRA folders for specific Motherboard/harware can share links and related experiences. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=114834

Installed from Retail and updated from another Install Ran Chameleon .11 installer and added my .kext EFI Studio poped some strings for Graphics and Audio into the Bootplist Repaired Permissions "and beware" seems some peops "like me" oversee that repair permissions only fixes the Apple Extensions not the 3rd Party ones..they need to be done by Terminal! overflow1972
to boot the retail dvd, you must first use the cd to boot the system. Then insert the dvd and then type "9F" as boot device. Regards

Hagar
Would it be possible to install 10.5 server with this method? I just installed os x server from a usb stick without a hitch. it works the same as client. In this case, I restored the leo server disk to the second partition on the usb stick. I also added the 10.5.4 server combo update, and a hacked kernel as an option for those less-than-vanilla machines. I put grub & the boot files, initrd etc on the first partition. This is useful for testing, as it allows more flexibility, several different initrd's and the option of booting other os'es from other partitions without going via boot-132, but for practical purposes, a syslinux or straight chameleon solution will work as well. The procedure for booting the install dvd will be that same as for client. The procedure from usb is also fairly straightforward. I booted from the usb stick with an initrd suited to my hardware, selected the partition with leo server on & ran the install.. when it had finished it gave me "install failed - could not make the disk bootable" (this is normal, it's just bless freaking out at not being on a mac) then I opened terminal & typed: /System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer I then selected the 10.5.4 combo update in the dialog and ran that, rebooted to the usb stick again, only this time hit escape & typed 81 to boot the install on the harddrive and run first boot setup, entering serial etc. This brings you to the desktop, from which you can run the chameleon installer, add your boot file & /Extra folder in your own time, finally removing the usb stick when the install boots correctly. (this can all be done booted from the usb stick, for a clean 1-pass install, running installer as above, but selecting the chameleon .pkg instead. If you want to run apps like Property List Editor, IORegistry Explorer, or even efistudio, just launch them from terminal in the same manner) it's really no different to installing leo client, apart from the serial. Jason_Thames
So how long do you guys think it will be before the Chameleon guys will support the boot-132 loading of kext files? I know some have hacked the two together but does anyone know if it will eventually be possible to install Chameleon on a vanilla Leo install and keep the install 100% vanilla while storing all necessary kexts in img files? Thanks... -Jason
Sapo
Thanks for your work !!!!! I tried and it fully works on a Asus P5k-Deluxe, and also have CI/QE on my 8800 GTX, out of the box. The next step was update to 1.5.4, everything was installed perfect, but after rebotting the system CI/QE was gone Need Nvinjet ? I need your help. Thanks, and sorry for that noobi question, and for my bad english. JP
Goron
Sapo: that was my problem, too. Just recreate a new boot image and dismiss framework.kext and nvkush. Then, with EfiStudio (or manually) create a gfx string for your card and drop it into com.apple.Boot.plist ....

Hagar: Thanks for the description of what you did. I also have built an install image from my retail DVD on an 8GB USB stick. I just used one partition though and used a small floppy based boot loader. I would like to copy what you did - sounds better than mine Did you use a GUID or MBR partition on the USB stick? Also, could you share your copy of grub and the configuration you placed in the first (grub) partition? That would save the rest of us some time in reinventing what you did. I need a mechanism like this because I can't run the vanilla kernel - prevents me from using the boot-132 cd. Thanks for your help - either way
