Yup I've ordered like 4 boards from him, shipping is a tad slow and he doesn't really communicate with you, but all of my boards have arrived new-in-box and work like a charm. Plus the price is great!

*************

Here is a link to the open-source Psytar Ethernet driver; it will allow Onboard Ethernet to work successfully. I believe the way it works is that after you wake from sleep, it simply reloads DHCP (release-renew) automatically instead of having to do it manually. It takes 5-8 seconds for the Ethernet to wake, but it does work:

http://rapidshare.com/files/129404309/Real...0.kext.zip.html

If you want instant Ethernet upon wake from sleep, just snag that $8 Encore Gigabit card. If you can live with a measly 8 seconds or need all 3 PCI ports for other cards, use the Psytar driver. Personally I'm a nut and want everything to work instantly all the time, so I have an Encore card haha.

I find it funny you should say that, yet you're willing to live with the extra 30 seconds that having AHCI enabled adds to your boot time. You must not reboot/shutdown very often and use sleep quite a bit. ;)

Anyway, that's not why I replied. I just wanted to thank you for writing an awesome guide with zero ambiguity in the directions. I got my system working last night using your guide without any problems!

I can't say the same for this other :( boot-132 guide written by some guy. I followed his directions to the T and couldn't get it to work after 6 times.

Exactly. Unlike in the Windows world, I find the sleep in OSX to be VERY reliable. Imagine having all your devices work on wake, all within a few seconds. No long wait to wake from hibernation or any other {censored} like on XP or Vista. I shut down my machine maybe once every few days, and it's more out of habit than anything else. And AHCI doesn't add 30 seconds to the boot time, though it's certainly not 0.

The last time I shut down my windows box before this upgrade was when I moved. The time before that was to install a hard drive 6 months ago. Same with my old hackintosh install.

Also, I find it weird that anyone would ever use sleep or similar functions on a desktop. There's just really no point once your monitor is off it barely consumes any power.

These are the error messages I get. Plus, how am I supposed to use disco... a dmg... to burn the image. I don't have a mac. That's why I'm following this guide.

Hi,

rather than make a new thread I will ask in here, as i am going to use this motherboard and similar set up when i put together my PC. My question is regarding the Kalyway 10.5.2 install disc

I have downloaded it from a certain newsgroup and when I have tried to mount the .iso file on my macbook it states "No mountable file system". I have checked in windows and it is an ISO9660 (bootable), joilet file system. The checksum is also not the correct one as stated in the kalyway 10.5.2 thread, is this normal?

I have tried to verify/repair in disk utility and I can't, it won't allow me and I have downloaded the file as the 3.6gb ISO, not in individual rar files so I cannot attempt to restore the files with the posted par2 files.

After I have burnt the dvd, it is not recognised at all by my macbook either, I thought maybe it might be in this different format to allow the PCs to boot it properly, or the iso has become corrupt when I have downloaded it.

Should I re-download kalyway or it should be ok?

Hey guys ... I posted this over on Aquamac, but I'll repost here. Regarding graphics cards, EFI strings, and Weaksauce's rigs :

Are there any advantages to using EFI strings over, say, Nvinstaller 0.2?

I have an nVidia 8800GTX with 768 megs. I have hardware acceleration enabled, Quartz Extreme, Quartz GL ... and games play fine (especially World of Warcraft) - but definitely not as fast as XP.

Would switching to EFI strings give me faster framerates at all?

What ARE the advantages of doing it this way?

You're kidding right? Maybe this was relatively true back in the old days of big CRT monitors, but not these days. A desktop PC can still consume quite a bit of power. On my UPS, my rig with 24" LCD is consuming .111Kw, whatever that means. When I power off the monitor, it goes to .086, a difference of .025. So, what exactly is that .086? I do have another PC attached, but it's powered off. When I put the system to sleep, the output goes to 0Kw.

That may have been true a few years ago - but *any* computer these days is using a LOT of wattage doing nothing. Sleep helps physical wear and tear, not to mention lowers the ever outrageous electric bills.

I may be mistaken so correct me if my math is screwy, but take .111 watt usage for example. That's 111 watts. In my area a kilowatt hour, or 1000 watts used for 1 hour is 7 cents. So take % of $ of a Kw used every hour (eg. .111*.07) and multiply that by 24 hours gives daily usage. Then multiply by 30 to figure your monthly bill.

.111*.07 = .00777 cents/hr

.00777*24 = 0.18648 cents/day

0.18648*30 = 5.594 dollars per month.

I looked at some stats of people who'd measured their wattage on overclock.net and the average seems to be pulling about 300 watts from a 500 watt psu while folding. This would equate to about $15 per month or .300*.07*24*30. (Around the same price of a ceiling fan running 24/7)

Thanks for the help, yet I think the Scotts NVinstaller is for mobile GO chipsets, many said that it doesnt work.

Regarding Aquamark, well I used PCWiz Installer for 9800GTX which contains the same kexts and stings from Aquamarks tutorial, but Iam not sure if the method done by installer is the same:( IT all seems kind a slow like there is no driver (yet it is identified as 9800GTX) :) still looking for solutions

Hi weaksauce,

First off I want to thank you for guide - it has worked flawlessly. Got lucky and found rev. 2.0 GA-P35-SD3L board at a local Microcenter. Went with a quad core Intel Q6600 and OC's easily to 3GHz. Love my Mac Pro Lite.

Also like to have a Quadro FX 5600 lite, found a 8800GTX PCI-E card with 768MB of video memory. I followed the steps you outlined 8800GTX to Quadro FX 5600

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry622940

In DOS mode successfully backed up the video card's rom and flashing FX5600.rom. Rebooted into Leopard OSX and installed he modded NVinject. Here's the problem I find that when I go into 'About My Mac' -> More Info -> Graphics / Displays -> I see it list the video card as Quadro FX 5600 hooray! but sadly it shows Quartz Extreme: Not Supported

This is strange since prior to using the modded NVinject and using the NVinstaller v.52.pkg and setting memory to 768MB I see Quartz Extreme : Supportedl. If I reinstall the NVinstaller v. 52.pkg I get Quartz Extreme Support but Chipset is listed as "Graphics by NVIDIA".

I am using Apple's latest OS X Leopard 10.4.5 release and the only difference is my 8800GTX is from XFX versus BFG Tech. Physically the cards are based on the exact same GPU - G80GL which is what the 8800GTX/Ultra and Quadro FX 5600 are based on.

Any help and insight on enabling Quartz Extreme would be most appreicated. I'd like to use my Mac Pro lite for 3D computer graphics.

Thanks in advance!

Whatever the math works out to, it's not nothing. I'm running an Earthwatts PSU and my E2180 is not currently overclocked, and I have a low-powered graphics card. But even if it's just $5.59/month it's $5.59 I'd rather not be paying. Also, I don't know where you are, but I'm sure my electricity rate is higher than yours! :(

How to change the Boot Resolution:

1. On your boot drive, navigate to Library>Preferences>SystemConfiguration

2. Copy the com.apple.Boot.plist to your Desktop and open it with TextEdit (you may want to create a separate backup copy in a different folder)

3. Insert the following lines after the Timeout number line: (change 1920x1200 to whatever your standard resolution is)

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>
1920×1200×32
</string>

4. Save the file and copy back into the SystemConfiguration folder (it will ask for your password)

5. Reboot

This is simply a small cosmetic change. The white boot screen with the Apple logo will now be correctly-sized for your monitor's default resolution. The com.apple.Boot.plist file should now look like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
 <key>Kernel</key>
 <string>mach_kernel</string>
 <key>Kernel Flags</key>
 <string></string>
 <key>Timeout</key>
 <string>5</string>
 <key>Graphics Mode</key>
 <string>1920×1200×32</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Notes:

You can also hack the Boot Screen Logo to some extent. It's a somewhat complicated process, but adds a nice bit of customization to your system. Details here:

http://www.dribin.org/dave/blog/archives/2...ot_image_intel/

I'm pretty sure that resolution does not work. I tried it myself as well as 2560 x 1600 (my resolution). I backed it down progressively each time until I got to one that displayed the boot screen with the correct aspect ratio and relatively "good" resolution: 1440x900. When I use 1920 x 1600 or 2560 x 1600, it defaults to some other VESA resolution where it's stretched out more horizontally.

I've found a fix for the EP35-DS3L and P35-DS3L internet connection on reawake.

1st: Go to System Preferences > Network

2nd: Take down all of the information (IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server, Search

Domains).

3rd: Change Configure from DHCP to Manually and reenter all of your information. Click apply.

As I wrote in the EP35 thread, I did something similar for my P35 board, but I used "DCHP with manual address" instead. I'm pretty sure it's mentioned earlier in this thread (somewhere in the 30+ previous pages!).

Any advantages of hacking the 8800gtx to a Quadro FX? I play a few video games (World of Warcraft mostly) - any fps increases with the hack?

I just use it for editing (video, pshop, etc.) so I can't really say. I'd imagine it probably wouldn't be as good as the straight GTX for gaming though, because it's flashed with the firmware more oriented towards professional applications.

Oh just a few times :P I can't blame people for posting stuff again though...30+ pages is simply too much to read and since I'm working on some updates right now, the main page doesn't have the absolute latest-and-greatest info yet.

Works fine for me...I have two machines, both with 24" LCDs, running this resolution (1920x1200). Sounds more like the monitor won't accept the desired resolution for the boot screen. I'm assuming you have a dual-link setup...what card are you running?

Yes, I actually have good news for you! The latest NVinstaller (the one included in my download package) supports the Quadro, all you have to do is put in the proper name. After installing NVinstaller with the 768mb option, just follow these instructions:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...mp;#entry839447

I updated the mini-guide for the Quadro a number of pages ago, but it's impossible to find anything in this ginormous thread lol. Again, the next guide update will incorporate all of these little updates and tweaks. Glad to hear you got your card flashed, you're gonna love it! :D

I find it funny you should say that, yet you're willing to live with the extra 30 seconds that having AHCI enabled adds to your boot time. You must not reboot/shutdown very often and use sleep quite a bit. :)

Yeah I just use Sleep. I don't really understand the "need for speed" at boot time...OS X takes 30 seconds, XP SP2 takes 60 seconds...it's under a minute either way, so who cares? The Gigabyte has the slowest AHCI BIOS I've ever seen, but adding a few extra seconds to the boot time doesn't concern me too much ;)

Glad the guide worked for you! It's in serious need of an update for minor tweaks, I just have a crazy work and school schedule right now so I only get to work on it on the weekends (12 hours a day at school, whoohoo!). The big thing I'm still working on is dual-boot; I don't really like any of the available solutions, but whatever. I'm trying to perfect the Grub method so that multi-boot will be easier...lots of kinks to work out haha.

Weaksauce, thanks so much for this.

Things were going great (however I noticed some pop ups about caches after some reboots after installing some of the things you provided) until I installed the video drivers.

I have a XFX 8400GS that is 256mb but on the box it says it supports up to 512mb.

It basically goes to a black screen and I've had to reset all bios settings (went for optimized results, that's right yes?) to get back and use my other XP drive.

So here I am, I read one post but I don't even know how to get to even try any of that as I just get a black screen. I'm okay with computers but some of this string stuff confuses me. This whole project for me has been a lot to take in.

I'm pretty desperate to get Logic running on here as I've got some files to work on.

Any help would be appreciated.

Whatever you do PLEASE add the ps2 fix to the front page. When I lost my mouse I went nuts trying to figure out what was wrong until I finally got to page 12 of the thread.

Oh, and you should also add that you don't have to burn the iso with disco, just use imgburn on a windows pc and boots straight up. I coudln't find the answer to this anywhere on the forum because people take it for granted that it's so simple.

weaksauce12, thank you very much for this guide. I have GA-P45-DS3R, I followed your guide completely, it worked the first try. Only different is the sound card driver, the P45 uses the ALC889A instead of the one in this guild. I installed the APPLEHDA.kext and HDAEnabler.kext from another post here to get the sound working. For Internet, I used the ASUS WL-167 USB dongle , it came with MAC driver already on the CD.

My machine Q6600 OC to 3.14G, 4g ram, GTS8600GTS 256meg.

Johnny V and Weaksauce,

I reinstalled it all (didn't know how else to do it as it was going to a black screen). Followed the guide here (including using Kaylway upgrade to 10.5.3) and then up to 10.5.4 with the link provided. Then followed the guide up until installing the sound.

Now, I wasn't sure what to do next. I installed the first file provided by Johnny V (didn't do anything else, was I supposed to do this after installing the video like in Weaksauce's guide?) and after reboot, I get the Apple logo, the progress circle thing and then a black screen. The screen doesn't go off like the PC is idle, it's like it's black if that makes sense. Also, I tried waiting about 5 mins and nothing.

Not sure what to do next? I really appreciate any help here. I really hope my XFX 8400GS isn't the problem. I can't afford to sell it and buy a new one.

I'm using a 24" screen with 1920 res connected via DVI.
