Weaksauce12,

I ran the memtest+ overnight in the morning the whole system hanged! So does this behavior means anything? Perhaps a bad memory? Which i doubt!!

Thanks.

Hah yup, sounds like something's definitely wrong with your system. Usually if you have bad memory, it will just give you a million errors, but will still run. I'm not sure if it's the memory or not, since the whole system hung, but it's the best place to start. Begin by using memtest86+ to test one stick of ram at a time. If it passes with no errors and without hanging, swap it out with the next one, and so on. If it freezes on each one, then it means there's a larger problem (maybe a heat issue or bad motherboard), since having more than one stick of ram be bad is extremely rare.

A word of warning, I also run Ubuntu and it runs great on the Bad Axe, but I was dismayed to see Ubuntu compiz running like treacle on the P35. Checking around some obscure postings, (I can't remember where) there was some talk of turning off the CPU smart cooling option in the BIOS which I did and sure enough, Ubuntu was running back at full speed with no bad effect on OSX. Worth knowing if you're dual booting...

...

Finally, I had the odd kernal panic after a few hours heavy use, which I couldn't pin down at all. It was totally random and ruined my initial confidence in the board.

I read on other threads that running the IDE port with over 2GB of memory can cause this problems (I have 4GB), so I've simply shut down my IDE port in the BIOS and so far, it's looking totally stable.....

Try turning off AHCI and seeing if Ubuntu runs any better. Might be hard-drive related.

I too have heard of issues related to the IDE port on Hackintoshes, so I haven't bothered keeping an IDE drive onboard. Let me know if you have any more kernel panics. Also, have you run Memtest86+ overnight? If you have a bad stick of RAM, it could be causing random errors. I'm a big fan of Memtest86+ because the first computer I ever built (a 1.4ghz Athlon Tbird with 1.5 gigs of RAM), had issues like CRAZY for a whole year until I discovered that the memory could be an issue, found Memtest, and found out that I had a single bad stick of 512...pulled it, voila - no more problems! I lived for a whole year with random crapouts on the PC simply because of one little bad stick of RAM...argg! So now when I build computers, that's the very first thing I do, haha. Not only does it test the memory, but it stress-tests the whole system because it lets you see if things rattle over time, get too hot, if stray wires buzz the fans, and so on.

QE/CI working. Built in audio and ethernet working fine. Shut down, restart and sleep also working fine. There is just one issue with the keyboard and it's regarding to the NUM LOCK key, while in MAC OS if you press it the keyboard stops responding, also if you have it enabled when it's booting up the keyboard won't respond either. I Don't know if it's a particular issue with PS/2 Keyboards or it also happens with USB keyboards.....can anyone confirm that?!?!

Yay, another working system! :D

What make/model PS/2 keyboard do you have? Have you applied the PS/2 keyboard update that was posted earlier in the thread? (a custom kext will be included with the next guide update) I have USB keyboard and I can press Numlock all day with no problems.

To test your Webcam, just pop open Photo Booth. If you see your picture, you're good to go ;) If your cam has built-in audio, I believe you can check to see if it works by looking in the Sound pane in System Preferences (my webcam is a cheap Xbox 360 webcam without audio, heh).

Coupla things -

First, I've been slowly assembling the components for this as things came on sale:

$80 Open box of the GA-P35-DS3L (not from NewEgg)

$279 Q9450 CPU

$50 Antec Neo-HE-430 power supply

$65 CoolerMaster CM690 case

etc...

Went to assemble everything and opened up the box that said GA-P35-DS3L, took it out of the anti-static bag and found that I had been sent a GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard. Should work, but I'd read of some incompatibilities, so ordered a (now) $59 GA-EP35-DS3L board (openbox) from NewEgg. Once it came a day later, I started my assembly. Installed via this guide last night. I too selected the audio and video drivers off the Kalyway disc (to be replaced when they were clobbered by the 10.5.4 update) so I had the animation play properly after the install.

The only thing that wasn't working on my EP35 board was wake from sleep. My board came with the F4 BIOS (different numbering than the P35 board) and I found that F5 was available, so I downloaded it from the GigaByte site. Here's a handy tip for those without a Windows computer around..., Darwine - http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/ - will let you run the self extracting archives to get at the tasty BIOS within. Which you can copy to a flash drive and use the QFlash utility to update your BIOS (press the END key during the first POST screen)...

Flashing to the F5 BIOS made sleep work, so now everything seems good. I migrated my user from my old BA2 system and am passing the trusty BadAxe2 system on to my son to replace his hot, noisy, long-in-the-tooth, won't-sleep-because-I-put-a-flashed-x800-in-it Dualie 1Gig G4 Mirror Door... (I built an Atom D945GCLF hackintosh into a G4 Cube case for my daughter).

Patrick

Hey bibendum! Welcome to the club brother! :D Glad to see you've joined us! Some questions:

1. Did that P35C work out for you at all?

2. What did you format your USB stick with before putting the BIOS file on? FAT32? Or did HFS+ work?

3. Got some pics and more info on that Cube hack? That sounds awesome! I have spent waaaaay too much on my Cube and I just can't talk myself into the $600 dual-PPC upgrade for it lol. I've been planning on putting a Mini inside, but it's only used as a kitchen computer (more of a display piece, actually) and that's still overkill...it had never even occurred to me to put the Atom inside the Cube case, that's brilliant man! :D

Thanks for the Darwine link, that's great! I hadn't even thought to look for an OS X port for WINE!

Also, someone on the BA2 thread got the Boot-132 method working - might be something for you to look into (if you haven't seen it already) to get some more life out of that beast!

The keyboard it's a plain Logitech keyboard, model: Deluxe 250. No multimedia buttons at all, just the standard keys. I've already installed the PS/2 patch a couple of times (used the latest one that fixes both mouse and keyboard I guess), but i'll try it again to see if something changes applying the fix fo rthe keyboard only.

I'll post later with the results....

eclau clued me in on how to get a retail install of Leopard 10.5.4 on a GA-EP35-DS3L http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=117763 . I replaced my Kalyway 10.5.4 install with it & couldn't be happier with the results. Everything works! Restart, Sleep, Shutdown, rex switching. It behaves just like a real Mac in every way but the boot. With the Kalyway install I had horrible audio(used same Taruga driver and Enabler on retail & it's superb audio), couldn't switch resolutions(blue screen), no sleep and more. Now I have the Mac I wanted, the one Apple couldn't be bothered with making, all thanks to this forum and it's members. This is fan-freaking-tastic!!!

If you don't mind doing another install :P

I was so frustrated when trying to figure this out that i will not go near those kexts unless i know i need them.

As for the video problem, try reinstalling the NVInject and once you reboot, go into system preferences, Auto detect monitor. Then try manually changing your resolution. In the monitors tab, your monitor should be correctly recognized and you should have all the resolutions your monitor is capable of.

Regarding my problem with the Kext files, I've been busy the last few days, but I intend on trying to install them again...after I install SuperDuper. I'm not using bluetooth now, but I plan to (really wanna use a wiimote for frontrow :P) So hopefully I can figure out why my board is not playing nice (it is a GA-P35-D3SL Rev2 w/ F7 bios).

I (Kinda) figured out my monitor issues. I am using a Syntax Olevia 27" LCD TV w/DVI to view my computer. It doesn't have a mac profile (or a video driver for any other OS for that matter). I was able to use a program called DisplayConfigX (http://www.3dexpress.de/) to force my resolution of 1280X768. It worked great...except...

When I used DisplayConfigX to install additional resolutions, there are two versions of each res. For example, I have "1280X768" and "1280X768 (Streteched)". the regular looks funky, it leaves giant black bars at the top and bottom of the picture, and squishes what is in the middle. The (Stretched) version did the trick.

In World of Warcraft...It doesn't see the "1280X768 (Stretched)". In fact, it reports a single resolution it calls "1280X768 (Wide)". I am confident that this is just the default "1280X768" resolution with a "(Wide)" descripition tagged on by the game (it does this in windows as well as an ease of use feature). For the life of me I can't figure out how to get WoW to recognize and use the 1280X768 (Stretched) setting in full screen mode.

Very annoying, and frankly not a problem with this guide or anything Weaksauce is doing. Most likely a problem with WoW and generic Monitors. However...if anyone has a solution...PLEASE let me know.

I'll report back when I get brave with those bluetooth kext files. :P

Okay I have tried it again re-installing according with tutorial step by step.

Here are the results:

4. INSTALL APPLE 10.5.4 Delta Update:

4. Open Finder and click boot drive, then navigate to following folders....Developer> Extras.....

I looked for 30 minutes ever single thing, I couldnt find anything at all like this. Yes in control panel I found Boot Drive then inside was only Network....

Okay the AUDIO IS STILL NOT WORKING. after installing drivers with taruga installer still doesnt work. I go to system preferences audio devices everything is grey colour and blocked. (MAY BE IT IS DUE TO THAT I HAVE GA-P35-DS3R as it have REALTEC ALC889A codec not 888?)

USB problems everytime I plug a device it is never recognized. I have a USB wireless adapter and it does not even try to identify it.

Now interesting part, before this tutorial I have done install on my own for the first time ever (I used Kalyway 10.5.2) I installed the Vanilla kernel (from the kernell sections) and default audio drivers that were pre-selected in Audio folder.

And guess what? The audio was working fine, and the USB was working great everytime I plugged the device no matter if it is my USB Wi-Fi adapter or Flash Drive it picked it up automatically and everything worked (exept for restart and shutdown).

Can anyone please help because I want to move from Windows TO Leopard, but if I cant get it to work I dont see any point.

Thank you

if you have the ALC889A codec, try rolling back (as shown in prior pages of this tutorial) and install the ALC889A kext from the customization page. (This would be the page where you select the different kexts such as netkass).

Weaksauce, I was thinking about using monolingual to remove the G5 and lower system files. Would this be advisable? Oh, and i want to remove all the miscellaneous languages as well.

Try SwitchResX?

As far as the game goes, most games generally have preset resolutions that fit standard monitors. I know on some games you can edit the preferences, although I'm not familiar with WoW or Mac gaming. The Widescreen Gaming Forum might be of some help:

I managed to get Kalyway installed and go through all the steps with my GA-EP35-DS3L and it's running fantastically, but with two little quirks.

1 - Disk Utility won't load.

And probably related

2-CD drive will not eject

Currently to remove a disk I have to reboot and remove it before the OS loads up.

Anyone have any ideaS?

Hey MacGirl

Maybe my scripting skills is broken...

.

.

.

I'm not using AHCI and do not have any other IDE devices connected.

Your scripting skills are not bad, is just the paths you used to delete and copy the kexts.

Thanks for the Guide, I personally like to do the steps manually rather than scripts, just wanted to report that the script has some issues.

I am downloading the RTGMac_v2.0.0.zip and will test it.

I also using my Disks as non-AHCI.

Any of you have a good method to install the windows XP AHCI drivers?

Any of you have a good method to install the windows XP AHCI drivers?

This is the link to the original thread that got mine working:

http://www.msfn.org/board/How-to-enable-AH...-X-t109450.html

I skipped the image extraction part. You just have to make sure to download the correct version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. There are a few variations on this fix, but this is the one that worked for me. I think it's because I have the same board he did, and I found the driver with same release date. If you find earlier, or later release dates for the driver, it won't have the same device id's. Then it's a struggle to find the correct hacks for the device id's. I found the driver with the release date of either 11/07 or 12/07. I'm out of town for a couple weeks, so I don't know exactly which one right now, or where I found it. His link has the download for the zip file with the date of 10/07, just make sure the IAAHCF.inf file that you extract, has the 2821 dev id and replace it with the 2923 dev id. I'm currently dual-booting XPsp3/OSX5.4 with AHCI off of the Darwin bootloader.

p.s. weaksauce12

my graphics issues cleared up after a couple of reboots, so I now have QE/CI support with no video issues. I've also been playing with iLife 08 and Logic Express 8, but I still haven't tried connecting my keyboard controller, or control surfaces (that's next).

Hi everybody,

I've installed leopard successfully using this guide, with the DS3L rev 2.0 bios F8.

I had minor problems during the installation (the guide should be updated accordingly, at least with the PS2 problem, I think it is still common to use PS2 keyboard and mouse):

1) PS2 keyboard and mouse stopped working after the upgrade to 10.5.4, the solution:

download and install the package of ~pcwiz (thanks mate!) right after the Upgrade (before reboot).

you will find a link within this thread (just search ps2 inside this thread).

2) I had the same problem that virtualwabbits decribed.

In my case, i think the problem was caused by one of these reasons:

* the bluetooth files broke my installation, DO NOT install them unless you have bluetooth!

* I am suspecting that this might have to do with my Segate Barracuda drive (virtualwabbits has one too). If it does, we should update the HCL's.

also, I recommend installing the kexts of SATA and SMBios one by one, and MAKE SURE they are created in the Extensions directory. I know it's a bit stupid, but after using the KextHelper and installing them all at once, I saw that one of the files was not it the Extensions directory, which caused dependencies problems and kernel panic.

== If you already are in kernel panic, and don't want to reinstall Leopard, do like me: ==

* boot with the kalyway cd.

* open the terminal, go to /Volumes/[your leopard volume]/System/Library/Extensions/

* delete the SATA and Bluetooth kexts

* cd .. (goes up one directory)

* delete the Extensions.mkext file (in order to reset the kext cache)

* repair permissions with disk utility

* reboot and directly enter the BIOS, change the SATA AHCI mode back to Disabled (don't worry, this is temporary).

* now boot into leopard, and reinstall only the SMBios and SATA kexts ONE BY ONE!

* now you will be able to change the mode in BIOS back to AHCI and it will all work. :D

3) my currently unsolved problem:

I'm using the onboard ethernet, and DHCP is not working after waking from sleep. (I am using the PsyStar kext). I suppose I can assign IP's manually in my router, but I want DHCP to work.

4) I still haven't tried to use my IDE harddrive (I want it for time machine). I will report if it works.

Please please help me with the DHCP network problem.

And we definately should buy weaksauce a decent beer. :)

Hi Jyoni17

I left out the Bluetooth kexts on my last install, and cuz I was bored, I went back and installed them after everything was done. I don't have any Bluetooth devices, and haven't had any problems with anything else I've thrown at it post-install steps.

Thanks for the troubleshooting steps on how to get back into the OS to 'fix mistakes', those will me help out a lot the next update I try :( .

Okay I have tried it again re-installing according with tutorial step by step.

Hi sup3r10r

Did you install the CHUD.pkg? And if you did, did you double-click on it, or did you drop into the Kexthelper icon?

Same question for the audio, did you double-click it, drop it on the Kexthelper icon, or drop it on the turtle icon?

In step 2, section B, did you deselect all of the customization, and then select all of the recommended, specifically the ones in number 5?

Hi Virtualwabbits,

Iam loosing my home here everytime I install Leo again and again some new glitch appreats like after 10.5.4 update straight on the boot mouse hangs for like 30 seconds:( (microsoft keyboard + mouse wireless set).

I got the audio working with different driver for ALC889A (however Iam still looking for a better driver if anyone knows please lend me a hand).

Yes I did use Kexthelper for all kexts I installed, and tried droping txt file on taruga it did install said done and reboot. But Upon reboot the sound still didnt work. (guess have different audio).

I have a D-LINK Wireless USB adapter but I cannot get it to work (it was working automatically on vanilla kernell that came 10.5.2 kalyway) but not with this one. WUA-1340 On the CD that came there was a driver, BUT it contains a driver for PCI wireless which I dont have (so device is not located) How can I get it to work, I looked all the net for this driver:( loosing my hope here. Have you tried PCwiz's Guide? He has support for the DS3R:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=90795

As far as your Wireless goes, I'd suggest 2 things:

1. Grab the Wireless kexts (you'll have to research what these are specifically) from your 10.5.2 install, and then use Kext Helper to install them on your 10.5.4 install. See if that works.

2. Buy a 10.5.4-compatible card like the Encore or Trendnet 802.11n PCI Wifi card ($35-$45ish).

First suggestion, dump the EP35 and buy a P35 board. Happiness, butterflies, and unicorns will follow :D

Okay, okay. What BIOS are you using?

.....

Why are you not happy with the audio if it's working?

Go to PCWiz's tutorial and download the easy installer package. The link is at the bottom of the first post...it's the 7.89MB file.

On install just check Sound Drivers and nothing else. This will install the ALC889A driver. This worked for me. If the sound doesn't work properly the first time install again.

Eh? They just cleared up? That's a little strange...

I'll have the PS/2 kext and other stuff in the next guide update. The new download package with the extra goodies is already over 100 megs unzipped (luckily it shrinks to ~70 megs zipped up). I'm debating the best way to approach the next guide update. I think the current version (long single post) is too messy and confusing. I mean, it's easy to follow the steps, but I think the guide could benefit from some custom formatting in a PDF file or something like that. I do want to have a printable checklist so that you can follow along step-by-step. I also think a video tutorial is definitely a good idea, because it's REALLY easy to setup Leopard once you see how it's done, especially if you're a newbie. What I can show you in 10 minutes of follow-along video takes like 15 pages of writing and screenshots, so the video method is definitely more efficient. However, I'm continually doing little guide updates and tweaks and having a set-in-stone video tutorial would be annoying because I'd have to re-record each section and recompile and reupload the whole thing anytime I wanted to make changes, instead of just hitting th edit button.

Suggestions welcome :D

FWIW, I'm experiencing all "Happiness, butterflies, and unicorns" so far on my EP35 board. I'm 90% sure I'm running BIOS version 4 (an older one) and my build is working 100% so far.

I did everything exactly the same way on my EP35 board as on my P35. There wasn't any difference I could see, except the obvious ones (the new board has some nice troubleshooting LEDs on it, and system profiler reports the board is an EP35-DS3L). Wake from sleep works just as well as on my P35. I'm also using the onboard LAN, with DHCP. It's only been a day though, so I haven't pushed it hard yet.

Note to EP35 users in general: I'm running this board with an E2180 dual core processor. One very weird thing I saw when booting up for the first time was that the EP35 had set my processor multiplier to 8x. It should've been set to 10x. Don't know why that would've happened, but it would've run my CPU at 1.6 Ghz versus 2.0 Ghz. All I needed to do to fix it was set the multiplier to 10x, but it was strange. This was turning on the power for the first time, so it's not OS-related.

Notes:

EFIStudio is now included and replaces ChameleonEFI. EFIStudio does 3 things:

1. Setup EFI for Video, Ethernet, and Sound

2. Boot.plist Editor

3. EFI Installation (PC EFI v8)

This will let you setup EFI strings for your system, as well as edit the Boot.plist (for customizing the Boot Resolution and SMBIOS). It also lets you install PC EFI v8. Although Chameleon is more actively developed, PC EFI v8 will let you have the same EFI on your cloned partition as you do on your default install. This prevents any would-be problems from switching to a different EFI on your cloned drive (although I've never experienced any issues).

I also moved Kext Helper to the root of the DS3L-Package, since there are kexts in different folders (Audio, Kext Files, and Vanilla). Audio now includes the standard AppleHDAPatcher kit, as well as the HDAEnabler to get the proper info to display in the Audio pane of System Profiler, the boot sound, and PTHVolume for switching outputs and adjusting output volume. The BIOS folder includes the F7 BIOS and the Windows Utility and graphics for changing the boot logo.

Extra Goodies has some additions as well. I moved SuperDuper! into this folder and deleted the cloning folder just to clean things up a bit, since EFIstudio takes care of EFI installation now. The Geekbench and Xbench benchmarking utilities are in there as well, as are Disco and Transmission for grabbing and burning the Kalyway files. The Memtest86+ ISO is there and can be burned with Disco as well; Rember runs straight from within OS X for memory testing. Temperature Monitor (including the Lite version) are in a sub folder and the SIL3132 RAID driver is now included if you want to run RAID using a PCIe card.

Kext Files are the same - AHCI, SMBIOS, and Bluetooth. Networking includes the Psystar driver (experimental - doesn't work for everybody; the default Leopard driver supports wake from sleep but not AFP/Bonjour shares) as well as the Ralink Wifi driver which works on many 802.11n cards such as the ones from Encore and Trendnet. Stock Icons has the default Leopard icons, which overrides the customizations that come standard with Kalyway.

System Updates is for you to put your updates in (Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo Update and the 88mb Apple 10.5.4 update), which is useful when you're burning the package to a DVD disc or copying to a USB memory stick (the folder is empty by default; you can fill it with whatever updates you'd like to). Vanilla includes the Shutdown Fix (CHUD & Poweroff bug fix) as well as the Restart Fix (AppleACPIPlatform.kext).

Video includes NVinstaller v.52, which covers most Nvidia cards. I've also included DisplayConfigX and SwitchResX, both of which allow you to customize your video output. For example, if you're hooking your Hackintosh up to a flat-screen television that has a custom resolution such as 1366x768, you can use SwitchResX to add that as a custom resolution option.

There's not a whole lot left...I can't get my PS/2 keyboard to work properly, so I've left that updated kext/installer out until it's perfected. I'd also like to try the new Onboard Ethernet driver method listed a few posts back to see if that works; if so, I'll included a patched copy in the next package release. If you can think of anything else useful to add, let me know!

Sweet - another update - dude when do you sleep.

And to all the people out there, stop buying EP35 boards.. thats not what this guide is for.

Onetrack, perhaps we should let weaksauce12 decide whether or not questions/comments about the EP35 boards should be posted here. If his past posts are any indication, he's done little to discourage users from discussing or buying the EP35 boards (except for post 468 where he made a comment about dumping the EP35, but I believe sarcastically).

The reason I bought an EP35 (in addition to my existing P35) is because it's harder to get the P35 now at a fair price (at least from first-tier dealers who have good customer service). I believe it's been discontinued. The EP35 seems to be the future of this motherboard, and I'm one of the few in this thread who can compare/contrast them. I believe discussing both is worthwhile, whereas discussion of other boards (like the DS3, DS3R, and other variants) should be kept to a minimum.

weaksauce12, what do you think? When do you sleep? :( And my offer to buy you a beer is still open!
