weaksauce12
Hi Weaksauce12, Thank you for your recipe: I've used your procedure up to and including Mac OS X 10.5.4, and everything worked fine on my system. Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R with XPX nVidia GeForce 9600 GT video card. However, since I updated Video (Step 6b) with NVinstaller v.52, setting it to 512MB, my system will only boot into the grey screen. This problem may have been solved in the previous 20 pages, but the forum search function is not working for me. Is it possible to reset to the default nVidia setup without redoing the whole setup ? Is there a specific setup which works with the GeForce 9600 GT at better than the lowest resolution ? Joe Follow these instructions to remove the NVinstaller stuff: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=678650 The 9600GT isn't supported under Leopard: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=90112 Get a new card - 7300GT, 7900GT, 8800GTS, 8800GTX, etc.

Joe Shit
weaksauce12, Thanks for the info, worked without problem, just like your "recipe" Here is my working setup: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R, Q9450 @ 2.6 GHz (overclocked to 3.2 GHz via BIOS), 4GB DDR2-800 RAM, NFX nVidia GeForce 9600 GT (512MB) Video Card, 2 x 500 GB Seagate 7.2krpm SATA Hard Disks (one running Windows XP SP3, the other Leopard), LG DVD burner with LightScribe; using onboard Ethernet and Audio. Video card resolution set to 1680x1050x32 via modified boot.plist, waiting for full GeForce 9600 GT support. Kalyway 10.5.2 + Kalyway 10.5.3 ComboUpdate + Apple 10.5.4 Delta Update + Taruga v1.2, as per weaksauce12's recipe, but without NVinstaller v.52 because of the non supported video card. weaksauce12
FreeNas sounds exciting - I need to figure out how to set one up. I bought the Linksys WMP300N because everywhere I read said "works OOB". Doh. Detailed walkthrough available here if you want to get a head start: http://www.orionmods.com/blog/?p=5 I'll be using a different platform (the inexpensive Intel Atom), but the concepts are the same. You can use it on any BSD-compatible hardware and you don't need a powerful machine to run it. I'm using the Atom in order to keep the costs down and because the basic recipe will be to replicate the actual Time Capsule, which is available in 500gb and 1TB versions. You can, of course, add as many drives and use RAID to your heart's content 2.4G Quad-core, 910G HDD(660 internal/250 external), 2G RAM and 2 very beautiful 19" widescreen monitors!!!! to add to that, this Hacky replaced my PowerMac G4 dp 1.25, w/ 2G Ram, 160G HDD which I sold for $500 and 2 15" monitors sold seperatly for the total of about $100 = $600 ..so in all, I spent or paid or made my Hacky for whopping $1083.53!!!! o yeah, kicked $200 for FCS, so thats really $1283.53 Nice, thanks for posting your build! Saved about $1200 there...and the Mac Pro doesn't even come with monitors Hey do you have the v.8 BIOS to get the Q9450 to work ? I'm still v.7 and just bought a Q6600, was afraid to install the v.8 for the .45 Quad Cores Keep in mind he's using the EP35, not the P35, so he has different BIOS's than we do. weaksauce12, Thanks for the info, worked without problem, just like your "recipe" Here is my working setup: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R, Q9450 @ 2.6 GHz (overclocked to 3.2 GHz via BIOS), 4GB DDR2-800 RAM, NFX nVidia GeForce 9600 GT (512MB) Video Card, 2 x 500 GB Seagate 7.2krpm SATA Hard Disks (one running Windows XP SP3, the other Leopard), LG DVD burner with LightScribe; using onboard Ethernet and Audio. Joe Nice, good work! What BIOS are you using for your EP35? In the meantime, I'd suggest getting one of those 100%-compatible $30 7300GT video cards. Life without QE/CI support isn't much fun! I added my hardware to my sig file... Also sold my E2180 and ordered a Q6600 today, and a better heatsink, and a SATA DVDR, and a Firewire Card, and a year of Xbox Live all from New Egg. Hey when you need stuff you need stuff. hehehe Ahh you're gonna have fun with that I have both the E2180 and Q6600...the Q6600 blows the E2180 out of the water! And just wait until you overclock, hehe... Thank you Weaksauce I followed your guide step by step and now i have a 100% working install. GA-EP35-DS3l Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz Processor 8800GT 1gig Video card SATA HDD IDE DVDr Thank you for the great guide!!!! You're welcome! What BIOS are you using? Trying to gather as much info about the EP35 as I can before officially adding it to the guide Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here is a fix for onboard GA-P35-DS3L Ethernet: 1. Extract attached archive somewhere... 2. Open terminal and change directory to where you have extracted the archive. 3. Type the following commands: chmod +x install_ethernet.sh ./install_ethernet.sh Reboot your computer for changes to take effect. This will fix the issue of, if you have DHCP configured and wake from sleep, you've lost network connectivity. Ooh nice, I'll give this a try today! Where did you get the file from? seanmcgpa
Weak, I am such an idiot. I ordered the WMP300N from newegg because that's what I *thought* was listed on the OSX86 10.5.2 wikki for working 802.11n (OOB) with Leopard. What I failed to realize is that "rev 2.0" after the list means the non US version - the US version is 1.0, and that doesn't work with Leopard. #$%#@%@#%#@ Now I am again on the hunt for a working 802.11n PCI card that works OOB and is recognized as Airport. Anyone have any recommendations? Regarding FreeNAS - thanks for the link. I am a *nix nub, so seems a little daunting. I take it that OOB it doesn't supprt Time Capsule backup, etc - I have to configure the servers manually?
jyoni17
Hi everybody, I've installed leopard successfully using this guide, with the DS3L rev 2.0 bios F8. I had minor problems during the installation (the guide should be updated accordingly, at least with the PS2 problem, I think it is still common to use PS2 keyboard and mouse): 1) PS2 keyboard and mouse stopped working after the upgrade to 10.5.4, the solution: download and install the package of ~pcwiz (thanks mate!) right after the Upgrade (before reboot). you will find a link within this thread (just search ps2 inside this thread). 2) I had the same problem that virtualwabbits decribed. In my case, i think the problem was caused by one of these reasons: * the bluetooth files broke my installation, DO NOT install them unless you have bluetooth! * I am suspecting that this might have to do with my Segate Barracuda drive (virtualwabbits has one too). If it does, we should update the HCL's. also, I recommend installing the kexts of SATA and SMBios one by one, and MAKE SURE they are created in the Extensions directory. I know it's a bit stupid, but after using the KextHelper and installing them all at once, I saw that one of the files was not it the Extensions directory, which caused dependencies problems and kernel panic. == If you already are in kernel panic, and don't want to reinstall Leopard, do like me: == * boot with the kalyway cd. * open the terminal, go to /Volumes/[your leopard volume]/System/Library/Extensions/ * delete the SATA and Bluetooth kexts * cd .. (goes up one directory) * delete the Extensions.mkext file (in order to reset the kext cache) * repair permissions with disk utility * reboot and directly enter the BIOS, change the SATA AHCI mode back to Disabled (don't worry, this is temporary). * now boot into leopard, and reinstall only the SMBios and SATA kexts ONE BY ONE! * now you will be able to change the mode in BIOS back to AHCI and it will all work. 3) my currently unsolved problem: I'm using the onboard ethernet, and DHCP is not working after waking from sleep. (I am using the PsyStar kext). I suppose I can assign IP's manually in my router, but I want DHCP to work. 4) I still haven't tried to use my IDE harddrive (I want it for time machine). I will report if it works. Please please help me with the DHCP network problem. And we definately should buy weaksauce a decent beer.

My case has ACL'97 front audio jacks and i know everything is hooked up right but no sound comes out. Yes! Switch the audio output in System Preferences to Headphones: (and make sure the Front Audio connector on your case is plugged into the motherboard) Also, you'll want to install PTHVolume (included in the next guide update). PTHVolume is a menulet that allows you to select an output and change the volume; this way, you don't have to go into the Sound preferences each time to change outputs. You can leave your headphones connected to the front of the case and your speakers connected to the rear. Make sure you uncheck "Show volume in menu bar" in the regular Sound preferences (see above - it's checked in the screenshot). You can download PTHVolume here: http://pth.com/products/pthvolume/ Here's a screenshot of PTHVolume in use: ' PTHVolume also lets you create volume shortcuts for your keyboard, if you have a non-Apple keyboard or other keyboard without extra volume controls. I'm really interested in the FreeNAS project also, I have a popcorn hour with a 500 gig drive and while it works great as a HDTV output device, the fileserver features are not great. I end up using FTP to connect to it, was hoping to use it as a time machine device but that has not worked out for me. Atom low power sounds great to me ! Yeah, I have a first-gen Popcorn Hour. Although those new ones with SATA support and HDMI 1.3a look mighty nice FreeNAS has FTP support built-in, btw. I actually use FTP for large file transfers because it's faster (even locally). The Atom board uses something like 4 watts. The whole system is less than a lightbulb (20-40w) 1) PS2 keyboard and mouse stopped working after the upgrade to 10.5.4, the solution: 2) I had the same problem that virtualwabbits decribed...the bluetooth files broke my installation, DO NOT install them unless you have bluetooth! 3) my currently unsolved problem: 4) I still haven't tried to use my IDE harddrive (I want it for time machine). I will report if it works. 1. Yup, PS/2 issue has been solved and will be included in the next guide update. 2. This is odd. I've installed the Bluetooth kexts on many machines WITHOUT Bluetooth, including those with Seagate drives (500gb 7200rpm SATA Seagate drives, done a couple of those so far). virtualwabbits, what BIOS are you using? Maybe it's an F8 bug. Also, good job on the mini-restore guide! The next guide update actually has you install the kexts individually and shows you how to remove them using the Kalyway Leopard DVD if you get a kernel panic at boot, which has happened to me with other problematic kexts, so you're getting a jump on things. Hopefully it will help anyone having issues! Also, I've done quickie installs with good success (10.5.4 + Vanilla stuff, restart, rest of the kexts + audio + video all the same time). I really want to track down this Bluetooth bug before releasing the next update though, it's bugging me! haha. I have 3 DS3L F7 systems and the BT kexts work peachy on all of them, even though only one system is actually running a USB BT adapter. 3. Yup, the problem with Onboard Ethernet has been documented. The Phystar driver only works for some people, not all people. This has also been resolved - the next guide update will have this labeled as "experimental" and the Encore PCI card will be recommended as default hardware. If the Psytar driver doesn't work for you, you only have two options with the Onboard Ethernet: no DHCP or no AFP/Bonjour. There is not 100% driver other than the Pystar (sp?) driver, which again only seems to be working for some people. Just get the $8 video card and remove the headache from your life 4. IDE works fine! Weak, I am such an idiot. I ordered the WMP300N from newegg because that's what I *thought* was listed on the OSX86 10.5.2 wikki for working 802.11n (OOB) with Leopard. I take it that OOB it doesn't supprt Time Capsule backup, etc - I have to configure the servers manually? There aren't any. At least, none that I know of. However, the Encore and Trendnet 802.11n cards work well. The quirk is that they show up as Ethernet devices instead of Wifi devices; you have to install a separate driver since it's not compatible with the Airport driver. But it does work, I have the Encore - very good signal strength!

AFP/Bonjour is stuff like being able to see iTunes shared libraries, AFP servers on your LAN, that type of thing. The default Leopard driver wakes from sleep, but doesn't see AFP/Bonjour shares. If you follow my guide and leave Networking unchecked during the Kalyway install and use Onboard Ethernet, this is the driver you'll have.

TonyMo
After reading about Weaksauce's migration to the Gigabyte board from the Bad Axe II, I decided to do the same. So I bought a Gigabyte EP35-DS3R board and pulled the CPU from my trusty Bad Axe and plunged right in... Followed the guide verbatim except for two things... I selected the NVidia 512 option right on the Kalyway disc, and also (and this is the important bit), I chose the "alc889a shutdown support" option. (The audio option mentioned in the guide does not work on this board, so skip that part and just choose the option on Kalyway instead)... This meant I got to see the opening intro on the opening of the install in perfect screen resolution and audio, and I plowed on with the rest of the excellent guide. At the end, my original video settings were lost, so I simply ran the video installer again and all was well... It's worth it if you like to get the whole OSX install experience and witness the opening credits... This board is truly worth the upgrade from BadAxe, OSX screams along and I'm a happy camper. A word of warning, I also run Ubuntu and it runs great on the Bad Axe, but I was dismayed to see Ubuntu compiz running like treacle on the P35. Checking around some obscure postings, (I can't remember where) there was some talk of turning off the CPU smart cooling option in the BIOS which I did and sure enough, Ubuntu was running back at full speed with no bad effect on OSX. Worth knowing if you're dual booting... Finally, I had the odd kernal panic after a few hours heavy use, which I couldn't pin down at all. It was totally random and ruined my initial confidence in the board. I read on other threads that running the IDE port with over 2GB of memory can cause this problems (I have 4GB), so I've simply shut down my IDE port in the BIOS and so far, it's looking totally stable..... So there you are, up and running and very happy. Thanks Weaksauce, we all owe you one and I'll let you know if anything else pops up with my installation, in the interests of sharing information and experiences.... Thanks again
cacon
Hey guys, I've used this particular guide to create my hackintosh. Just to let you know that my HW config is slightly different than the one from this particular guide. It worked PREFECTLY by the way, I used the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD to install it, along with the drivers provided here. Here are the HW specs: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 MB: GA-EP35-DS3L Rev 1.0 BIOS version F5 XFX Geforce 8600GT 512MB 2 GB RAM DDR2 667MHz Kingston (2*1GB) SATA HD 80GB Seagate ST380815AS SATA DVDRW LG GH20NS10 Firewire/USB PCI card (VIA) PS/2 Keyboard USB Mouse Internal all in one USB memory card reader (samsung) Generic USB webcam (not fully tested yet but detected properly) QE/CI working. Built in audio and ethernet working fine. Shut down, restart and sleep also working fine. There is just one issue with the keyboard and it's regarding to the NUM LOCK key, while in MAC OS if you press it the keyboard stops responding, also if you have it enabled when it's booting up the keyboard won't respond either. I Don't know if it's a particular issue with PS/2 Keyboards or it also happens with USB keyboards.....can anyone confirm that?!?! I must tell you that the original set up was without the SATA DVDRW, since for installing and setting up the OSX I used a IDE DVDRW Drive (Lite On DH-20A4H) which also worked perfectly since the beginning, I changed the drive for the SATA after everything was set up and running. So from my experience, any GA-P35-DS3L (EP35, or just plain P35 Rev 1 or 2 should be compatible) Other than that it's working flawlessly. Thanks to all the people involved in this projects and special thanks to weaksauce for this detailed guide. Cheers!!!!
macgirl
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here is a fix for onboard GA-P35-DS3L Ethernet: 1. That install script does not work, it has wrong paths, also the kext does work with AFP and Bonjour but when wake from sleep IP Address is lost, it needs "renew DHCP". Suckerlove78
That install script does not work, it has wrong paths, also the kext does work with AFP and Bonjour but when wake from sleep IP Address is lost, it needs "renew DHCP". Hey MacGirl Maybe my scripting skills is broken... Let me explain what needs to be done manually: What I saw was that this particular ethernet card's hardware string is in both these kexts, Info.plist RealtekR1000.kext and AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext. If you would go into Windows Device manager the driver name says 8169/8111. What I think is happening is that OSX load the RealtekR1000 driver wich is only partialy working. We need to force it to load the AppleRTL8169Ethernet driver. So... Download this driver from the Realtek site: ftp://66.104.77.130/cn/nic/RTGMac_v2.0.0.zip Extract the contents with Pacifist to get the kext AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext then... Delete /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/RealtekR1000.kext Delete /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext Copy this extracted kext to: /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ Repair the permissions on /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext recursively. sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/* sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/* Delete the /System/Library/Extensions.mkext file (OSX will recreate this automaticaly) Reboot your PC Startup with -f -v (Make sure you see the AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext getting loaded at startup and not the RealtekR1000) Variables on my PC: Im currently running Kalaway 10.5.2 wich is updated to 10.5.3 with Kalaway combo update. Also, my PC is set to put in password after wake from sleep. UPDATE:I've disabled "Need password to wake from sleep", start pinging www.google.com, put computer to sleep. Wake the computer and behold... the ping drop 2 packets and just continue pinging Google with perfect reply. I don't know how to test if Bonjour is working, but DHCP/Sleep issue is definitaly GONE with this exact method. My hardware specs: Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L rev2.0 CPU Intel C2D4600 2.4 Ghz 2x 1024MB memory 2x SATA HDDs 1x SATA LG DVD writer I'm not using AHCI and do not have any other IDE devices connected. bibendum
Coupla things - First, I've been slowly assembling the components for this as things came on sale: $80 Open box of the GA-P35-DS3L (not from NewEgg) $279 Q9450 CPU $50 Antec Neo-HE-430 power supply $65 CoolerMaster CM690 case etc... Went to assemble everything and opened up the box that said GA-P35-DS3L, took it out of the anti-static bag and found that I had been sent a GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard. Should work, but I'd read of some incompatibilities, so ordered a (now) $59 GA-EP35-DS3L board (openbox) from NewEgg. Once it came a day later, I started my assembly. Installed via this guide last night. I too selected the audio and video drivers off the Kalyway disc (to be replaced when they were clobbered by the 10.5.4 update) so I had the animation play properly after the install. The only thing that wasn't working on my EP35 board was wake from sleep. My board came with the F4 BIOS (different numbering than the P35 board) and I found that F5 was available, so I downloaded it from the GigaByte site. Here's a handy tip for those without a Windows computer around..., Darwine - http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/ - will let you run the self extracting archives to get at the tasty BIOS within. Which you can copy to a flash drive and use the QFlash utility to update your BIOS (press the END key during the first POST screen)... Flashing to the F5 BIOS made sleep work, so now everything seems good. I migrated my user from my old BA2 system and am passing the trusty BadAxe2 system on to my son to replace his hot, noisy, long-in-the-tooth, won't-sleep-because-I-put-a-flashed-x800-in-it Dualie 1Gig G4 Mirror Door... (I built an Atom D945GCLF hackintosh into a G4 Cube case for my daughter). Patrick
