Yep, you forgot the /System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/1 editing part and I (*blush*) wrote there "dmos.kext" instead of "dsmos.kext"

Now it's working, I had also to install the old AppleSMBIOS.kext and installed the package "updated kexts for 10.5.5" found in another topic (that I'm no more able to find now, sorry).

Testing...

Has anyone of your guys gone ahead with 10.5.5 as per darkSamus's instructions? if yes, then how successful is it?

Well, I could not hold my self from updating, so happy to report, that using OneTrack's instructions and partly following Netkas's method, System is successfully updated to 10.5.5 without any problem and no additional kext were installed afterward (Sound, Lan, DVD and most software that are important to me are working so far without a glitch). I say partly cos even though i tried to follow all the steps (as tormentor suggested), there simply wasn't a line with DON'T steal mac osx to be replaced in the nano terminal (/System/InstallAtStartup/scripts/1) I don't know why, but it just wasn't there.

Sleep I don't use, restart and shutdown work fine so far.

I do have the following problem, would be wonderful, if someone can help on englightening me: my system can recognize 4gb but system preference does not show any more details about the ram, like how many mhz. etc.

System: kalyway 10.5.5. witn 9.5 darwin.

Mobo: GA-EP35-DS3L. Rev. 1.

CPU: E2180 (going to replace it with E6550 from my windows machine)

Rest of the stuff are not too important I guess. All sata drives though.

I then rebooted and got a HFS+ Partition Error.

After another reboot, I got back into Leopard but I seem to believe it has booted off my "Storage" partition, because I made it active - is this correct? I noticed spotlight had to re-index...

Actually my mistake - the HFS+ Partition Error is still there. It just happened that I was booting off the Kalyway DVD and I didn't know it.

So, during the cloning step, I messed something up.

BoBo has spent some long hours tweaking his machine for 10.5.5 and has come up with this method: (from scratch, modify as needed for your setup)

1. Install Kalyway 10.5.2

2. Install 10.5.3 combo (Kalyway or netkas-style)

3. Install 10.5.4 (88mb Delta from Apple)

4. Backup your 10.5.4 extensions (quick method via Terminal: cp -R /System/Library/Extensions /System/Library/Extensions.1054)

5. Install 10.5.5 (netkas-style) * install script may or may not add the don't steal this mac line; if it's there change it to dsmos.kext

6. Reinstall your 10.5.4 extensions, except for the .4 kernel (you might not need all of them, but it works; via command-line: rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions, then cp -R /System/Library/Extensions.1054 /System/Library/Extensions)

7. Install any remaining Software Updates

8. Install Chameleon and update boot1h file from Qermit

9. Install 9f23 (aka the 10.5.5 drivers) and use EFI to get res + CI/QE - from nvinstaller

10. Install AppleHDA taruga ALC888

It seems that 10.5.5 doesn't like us to use injectors, so we have to use EFI Strings. The easiest way to do this is to use EFI Studio. Hopefully someone will get injectors working in the future, but no biggie as we have EFI Strings now, yay! As always, have a complete working backup of your system before upgrading to 10.5.5 - this may not go smoothly for everyone!

So for those of you already on 10.5.4, this is what you're doing in a nutshell:

1. Removing injectors (don't know if these screw up the update yet or if you can leave them, I'll update this later)

2. Installing 10.5.5 via netkas' method

3. Downloading any remaining Software Updates

4. Installing Chameleon EFI along with the newer boot1h file

5. Installing the 10.5.5 drivers (9f23)

6. Installing EFI Strings using EFI Studio

7. Re-installing the Audio Patch (Taruga's stuff)

Kind of messy, but this does a few things:

1. Updates you to 10.5.5

2. Switches you over to Chameleon EFI

3. Updates your system to EFI Strings (and thus gets rid of old-style injectors)

I'll work on writing a more detailed guide, but for power users go ahead and try this method out, then report back on your results. Thanks!

Weaksauce, thanks for the effort.

Yes, please do work on a more detailed guide. Much Appreciated. Since some of the following points are not very clearly put for newbies like us. I do have a working 10.5.5 delta update though using netkas method explained by OneTrack on this page or page 40 back and so far no problems.

But as a newbie we would not know what might have we screwed up using that method, since your guide below seems far too long and complicated, so it gives me reason for concern, that I might have messed up the system or might have missed something.

Please put the following in details if you can.. Greatly appreciated. Thanks and cheers.

Yes, please do work on a more detailed guide.

Yup, the above guide is a beta guide for power users. Not for general consumption

Here's my basic schedule right now for the hobby:

1. Make a detailed 10.5.5 Update Guide for the DS3L

2. Answer thread questions & post results of mini-tests that I've slacked on for the DS3L (WakeOnLan, IDE drives, 4GB RAM, etc.)

3. Updated the main guide to 10.5.5 for the DS3L, along with the other minor updates (including how to boot from a RAID set)

4. Post results of EFI-X testing on the DS3L

5. Release Multi-Booting Guide for the DS3L (Dual-booting, Multi-booting, Virtualization)

6. Release Overclocking Guide for the DS3L

7. Release Backup Guide for the DS3L (Time Machine backups, SuperDuper Cloning)

8. Change guide over to the Boot-132 method

9. Release Time Capsule guide

10. Release Macbook Nano guide

11. Release Media Center guide

12. Release Smart Home guide (the iHome Project)

13. Release Router Guide (quasi-Airport Extreme, with Wifi optional)

I've got a lot of things long overdue, kind of had a scatterbrained approach for the past year. I don't have a lot of free time due to school, work, family, and other projects, but ideally I'd like to have all of the above completed by the end of the year. And maybe some other stuff

Vow Man, take it easy on yourself. It's good to put yourself on a time frame for a hobby that you love and many hundreds if not thousands benefiting from it, but also do take care of your health. And so that's why I recommend that you divide your hobby into

1) Very important stuff: (stuff that's critical for a running system on a day to day basis or stuff cos of which system might get broken if not take care of)

2) General Benefit stuff: Stuff for the general benefit of the system, like moving to chameleon, or boot 132, (i have not much idea what they are though, but seems they are complimentary to making the system run much better and smoother, so this step can be # 2)

3) Beautifying the system stuff: And stuff that can be done later, like beautifying the system, making the icons better, etc. etc...

I am not trying to be condescending, just wish you well as it seems you have got yourself on a very tight schedule. (or maybe not, if you are very fast with your hobby. :P }

Anyway... Best of luck to us all. cheers.

Aww man, this sucks.

Since no one replied about my HFS+ boot error, I went about scouring the forums and searching for information... I tried many different suggested solutions but nothing worked. In the process, I screwed up my Vista drive (WD Raptor)'s boot record.

And then, finally, I somehow managed to completely erase the 2 partitions I had on my MAC drive. At least before I could have booted into Leopard through the Kalyway DVD. Now it's back to square one! :D

Everything was peachy until the Cloning section..

Worked for me... I'm back after another couple hours of installation, but am at 10.5.5 now.

Ooh...most heavy-duty graphics cards (for gaming) fill up two slots. What are you planning on using your PCI-e slots for?

Don't really have any plan for it at the moment I was just wanting to keep it free for down the road.

I am not really worried about heavy-duty so much as decent. I don't mind running games at lower resolutions and truthfully I plan on play Fallout 3 on my Xbox 360 not on a computer but I figure some time down the road it might be neat to get the PC version so I could mess with some of the mods. The heaviest game it will for sure be running is Starcraft 2 and Blizzard is pretty good about keeping their system requirements reasonable.

I don't really keep up with gaming cards to much though and I was just figuring that by now they probably had a version of last years top of the line cards that no longer blocked the second slot. In the end I guess it really doesn't matter though. A friend of mine used this guide to put together a system so I may just try to get the same graphic card he did since it works well.

@weaksausce12: Hi i sincerely wanted to thank you, stella, onetrack, replicant, pcwiz, kalyway, jaison and all the people who posted their queries and solutions on this thread!.. It helped a lot!! THANK YOU ALL at insanely mac for making osx86 real!

just wanted to update you that your guide is fully working with Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P Mobo. This one of the best Mobo's that i have come across, it has 6 SATA ports, options for eSATA, RAID, 12 USB ports, built in ethernet, two IEEE1394a ports, upto 8gb RAM 800/1066mhz support and dual BIOS. dual BIOS sounds wicked as the mobo's manual says; incase the primary BIOS ROM becomes corrupt or fails, then the backup BIOS kicks in and your machine willl still be running. this Mobo also has a brilliant support for overclocking though i must say i am a complete complete compleeete NoOb in that area!! i am not sure which revision it is.. will update you guys soon!!

i had a very tight budget of "$1000". So i had to make few compromises with my machine config. i actually wanted to have a intel core 2quad Q9450 with 12mb cache... but with the prices still hovering around $700 - $900 naturally, i had chuck it from my wish list. So i finally settled down for this spec... for me its nothing but spectacular!!

My Config:

Hacked Pro (Kalyway 10.5.2 updated to 10.5.4)

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 8 mb cache @ 2.4GHz

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P

Ram: 4gb (2x2gb) 800 mhz DDR2 Transcend

Graphic Card: Zebronics 7300GT 512mb Ram (Quartz Extreme is supported and vram is 512 mb)

Case: Coolermaster Elite 330 with 390 Watt SMPS

Hard drives: one 300gb, 3GB/s, Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm Hdd and one 160gb, 1.5 GB/s Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm(from my old extinct PC)

Monitor: AOC 2216sw 22" widescreen TFT

Dvd Drive: MoserBaer 22X DVD writer

plus a 600 Watt line interactive UPS (to keep the voltage spikes in check!!, a rampant problem where i live)

total cost: $933 flat!!

you will be suprised by this...but everything works!! sound, mic both in front and rear, onboard ethernet, firewire, sleep, shutdown etc. you name it!! The only small problem that i am facing is that after i shut down my rig, the fans still keep on running... i guess i must have done something wrong in following the steps from your guide. But i can live with that.

One more thing!! you did mention in your guide about the problematic 512mb graphic cards... IT IS TRUE!! trust me guys!!... my 512mb Zebronics 7300GT card gave me a lot of black screens and headache until i figured out that you need to flash the graphic card's ROM using nvinstaller guide.. that took a lot of time to get done with.

I am planning on installing Final Cut Studio2 by next week and will check out if my rig can handle it!! theoretically, i think it should work on my rig without any problem as the ethernet shows up as en0 and quartz extreme is also supported! For all the Noobs reading this!!.... please keep in mind that for FCP to run as per the posts on insanlymac.. your ethernet MUST show up on your system as en0 and your graphic card has to support quartz extreme with a minimum vram (virtual ram) of 64mb. if you want to find out more please do a search on this forum and i assure you.. you will find your answers!

i really need a big help though. i am trying to install maya 08 on my hacked pro... but it just keeps on asking me for the license. i have followed the procedures mentioned at this forum of using the crack aw.dat process but still no avail!! i would be greatful if you can help me out with that..errrrrr may be a small guide for all weaksauce12?? :D

i am planning to later upgrade to 8gb ram, more powerful SMPS and ofcourse 1TB hdds for FCS2 (if it works!)

Well, I did it from scratch using the Ideneb distribution instead of Jas (there should be no difference, it has only my native language in the DVD..)

I didn't patch anything since the upgrade

upgraded using netkas method

replaced the kext related to ACPI and AHCI (or the machine doesn't reboot etc. and the hd is not recognized with the bios in AHCI mode)

Also added latest smbios and dsmos

Used EFI studio to add the devices string (Video card and audio)

used taruga patcher for the audio

removed alcinject.kext that the patcher installs itself

Working good...

Think about purchasing the software you want to use. Support the development of the software - the people who wrote it worked hard on it.

I had the same problem, and upgrading to the F5 BIOS worked for me. I have the EP35-DS3L, so I'm not sure if it's the same BIOS for your case..

Make sure you also have installed the poweroff fix..

Must have missed a step going to 10.5.5, b/c I have orange drive icons which are caused by the unrecognized AHCI controller. So I'm thinking I would need to install these again in the very first post:

AppleAHCIPort.kext (SATA driver #1 of 2)

IOAHCIFamily.kext (SATA driver #2 of 2)

picture1cp8.th.jpgthpix.gif

HOWEVER, before I do that, I would like to have a clone ready in case something goes wrong. As I totally (and I mean totally...) screwed things up back here, can someone quickly clear up how to perform these steps properly...

1. In the Cloning folder, run SuperDuper (clone from your boot drive to the drive you want to clone to)

2. In the Cloning folder, run Chameleon and change the install location to the newly-cloned drive

3. Mark the data partition on the new drive as active

My 640GB is divided into 2 partitions... Mac OS boots off the 1st one, and the 2nd one is just for storage. So, is it advisable to use superduper to clone from partition to partition in the same drive or should it be cloned to a different drive?

Do I still need to run steps 2 and 3 after that? Or are these steps only needed WHEN I need to call upon the backup??
