Weaksauce12,

I just picked up a new HDD:) 500GB SATA2.

Iam still thinking bout which file stystem to use and where, I will install Windows on 1 but paritition wont be big, the rest I use for storage.

Another 500 I will put for Leopard (guess no point in paritioning).

Iam curious about your boot method that you mentioned last time (hit the bios button and choose from which to boot) can you go in a bit of details? Once I pressed F12 I saw only 1 HDD there:*(

By the way if I boot using your suggested method, is it matter what u install first Windows on Leo? Should I format mac drive as MBR or GUID?

P.S I tried Paragon NTFS works great by the way

Lately I've been having issues with CD's/DVD's and toast.

Nothing wants to eject.. Toast freezes up when I try and start it..

Not sure.. It's a liteon dvd/rw.. been good for a while...

then lately just acting funny..

Any tips?

Could be just a coincidence, but last night I was ripping some DVDs using Mactheripper. After one ripped successfully, I tried to eject the DVD and it would not come out. I had to restart the computer to get the drive to eject the disc. I say coincidence because it was a Lite-On drive also. On the next try it worked fine.

I have found Hackintoshs can "forget" the optical drive... This happened on my BA2 as well as my current EP35. I used to open the case, gently unplug the power to the optical drive, then plug it back in, and it would start working again - big PITA. Now I just put the system to sleep, wake it up, and all is well - drive recognized again.

Weaksauce, back on page 14 of this thread, you stated you had a firewire card that worked perfectly. I was wondering if you figured out which one you had. I saw phanatik's post but after reading some reviews on newegg, was a little worried so if you have a better suggestion, i'd appreciate it.

Here's what may seem to be a strange question:

Has anyone installed Windows XP on a sata drive using this board?

That is, I have followed Weaksauce's excellent guide and I have a flawless OS X system that works with sleep and is updated to 10.5.4 and is running smooth as silk with this board. I have subsequently installed Windows XP in a Parallels virtual machine (using a virtual hard drive).

But when I try to install Windows XP to an actual hard drive, I get the dreaded BSOD stating that "a problem has been detected ad windows has been {censored} down to prevent damage to your computer. Stop: 0x0000007B"

I have many hard drives laying around, and I get the error no mater which drive I try. Note however that all of my drives are sata drives - not IDE.

Is there a sata driver that needs to be loaded (as in 'press F6 to load an AHCI or RAID driver' during the windows installation)? Or is there something about the bios settings that the guide in this thread uses that would prevent installation of XP?? I sure cannot find any drivers for the board on the company's website.

I have even gone so far as to completely remove the drive that has OS X on it from the machine to reduce variables. This just seems to be a very strange problem!

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Craigolio

Craigolio,

Usually by default windows XP does not have any AHCI drivers with it, so if you have it enabled in BIOS you wont be able to install windows you will get something like : Windows was unable to detect any hard drives. You need to get AHCI driver and put it on a floppy if you have one as XP does not understand any USB during install (unless your board can emulate floppy through USB). Best way is to build in AHCI driver into the installation CD (use software called nLite).

I have another problem I have bought one more HDD, I need to format both to the RAW state or unalllocated, OSX Disk utility doesnt seems to be able to do that. I have created boot cd with Acronis Partition Manager, but I get this UNABLE TO LOCATE ANY HARDDRIVES error, even though I switched AHCI off

Hi all,

Just wondering what 800mhz Ram range people have found to be most compatible with this board. I have listed below RAM available to me if you could refer to them. I have read that Hyper-X kingston sometimes has issues with some GB boards - don't know if that is true?

I have A-Data (667) in my macbook and it has never been off beat works perfectly. I am only planning on overclocking the Q6600 to 3ghz which 800mhz ram should be fine for - is there a specific brand below that works best for this?

The prices are all AUD

4G Kit-800(2x2G) Gingle ($85) / Apacer ($87) /Transcend ($87)

4G Kit-800(2x2G) A-data ($87) /SuperTalent ($87) /Kingston ($93)

4GB Kit DDR2 800 G.Skill-PQ ($105) / Kingston-HyperX ($105)

4GB Kit DDR2 800 OCZ Platinum ($105) / G.Skill-PI ($125)

To Swilso

Iam using Kingston DDR2 800, never had any issues with it.

To all and specially weaksauce12

I have encountered a problem not related to OSX. On my old HDD once I used Acronis Disk Director and something went wrong during partitioning, so I managed to recover lost 30 GB but since then I have never been able to merge it or expand it.

The main problem is THIS: before I put OSX I need to format this whole HDD to RAW state or unidentified space. Now Disk Util does not see Unidentified space!,

I have created a BOOT CD from Acronis Disk Director to format it before windows loads BUT I GET THIS MESSAGE LIKE IN WINDOWS XP: Unable to locate any hard drivers.

Why? I already switched off AHCI and I even reset bios to defaults still no luck, so Now iam stuck withought being able to partition anything.

Can the disk util erase the whole thing so I can have only 1 parition?

Are those 4GB Kits two sticks or four sticks? I'd recommend the 2GB sticks, just incase you'd like more ram in the future.

I have 8GB DDR2 1000 G.Skill-PQ Not one hiccup.

Johnny V -

Is that G.Skill-PQ 800mhz stock and you have overclocked it to 1000 ? I was thinking of eventually uping to 8gb eventually so I will only buy 2gb sticks. Does it make much of a difference running leopard on 8gb rather than 4? I was thinking of 8 as I know when I run parallels on my macbook with 4gb/ram it still really struggles so I hope 8gb should run a bit smoother.

The ram is guaranteed to overlock to 1000MHz and sold as 1000MHz...but when installed it reads as 800MHz as it has something to do with most motherboards do not recognize ram over 800MHZ when first installed or something like that!

Have you tried pulling out the Leo HD from the computer and installing the other HD and let XP format and install XP. Then reinstall Leo and reformat the XP HD?

Man I almost want to build a new box with two quad-core processors!

Thanks for everyones help. Unfortunately (and fortunately  ) Im in Australia so I don't think newegg post internationally, if they do it still probably cheaper to get it here myself and save postage. Below is what I have in mind for the system I want to build:

Motherboard: GA-P35-DS3L obviously (It's on it's way, got one for $70 AUD)

CPU: Q6600 - Cheapest in Aus at the moment is $195

RAM: G.Skill-PQ or OCZ platinum 4gb (800mhz) - Both go for $105

HDD: Will see how much funds I have when I get this, I want 2x sata drives (1 for vista 64bit and 1 for osx)

I have some old IDE laying around I want to see how they go in osx for storage purposes.

Video: Still undecided. I would like to get an 8800GT if I can afford it - I can get a Inno3D GF 8800GT

256MB 256-bit GDDR3, 600/1800MHz for $117 (it seems ridiculously cheap compared to other 8800GT so I dont know

if it is any good?) Otherwise I was thinking of a MSi 8600GT (512mb) for $60

Network: As I understand there is problems with the network card for this motherboard. I have no use really for an ethernet because

the wireless router is so far away. So I was hoping someone could tell me what they think of these wireless PCI cards I have

found the 'supposedly' should work on a mac. There is this one or there is this one it has a RTL8185L chip.

And of course I have a pretty Asus case that is white to reflect the irony of using osx on a PC :D it should sit camouflaged in with my macbook next to it.

And the grand total I dont even want to know (it will just put me off doing it), I will buy bits and pieces as I can afford them.

Anyone with suggestions/possible amendments let me know, but as far as the research I have done I think everything should be quite compatible.
