Johnny V
Awe bummer man....sorry about that! Can you restart in safe mode? Hold down the Shift key after Darwin. or type -v while in Darwin then press the Enter key see what errors it gives. Also try -s Does your card have two DVI ports? If so is your monitor connected to the closest one to the mother board? I know there is a command where you can delete any kext file on start up. Looked for the command on the forums but couldn't find anything.
weaksauce12
Been working with lindmar on the random kernel panic issue...we're positive it's related to using IDE drives in the system. His system is 100% stable using an all-SATA configuration. Please chime in with your IDE experience. Your system should be 100% stable, all the time, no issues ever - so don't say "oh it's stable with IDE" if it even crashes once. My systems run 24/7 and are rock solid; they are 100% SATA-based. I'm only using IDE drives for testing purposes so I don't know the long-term effects.
peebo
I only have one DVI port. I'll try the commands. Failing that, think I'd be best just leaving Kalyway at 10.5.2 and then trying to install your video Kext?
sup3r1or
First of all let me thank all the people who assisted me with my problems. Especially: Weaksauce12 , Johnny V and special thanks to Aqua-mac that finally made my 9800GTX working. I now finally have a solid build of Leopard with all the features running:) Weaksauce12 heard something on the net people were experiencing slow HDD performance on 10.5.4 and the solution was apparently not to install the kext for APPLEVIA.... is this true? I mean is this case to case basis or theres something to it?

The default motherboard driver configuration works, but I don't know if it's the most efficient set of options for our systems. My main goal is to clean up the bugs and improve efficiency where possible for the next mini-update, so that is definitely on the list of things I am looking at! Glad you got things running, can you tell us more about your installation of the 9800GTX? I'm sure there are plenty of people who would like to use that card
peebo
Well I've tried to just install Kalyway 10.5.2 then install the Kexts in the Kext folder, then the audio and then install Johnny's Kext and still end up with a black screen. I tried typing: -s Then uw / Then when I type /modevideodrivers it says it's a directory. That's it. Would I better trying the graphic drivers on the Kalyway DVD? sup3r1or
Weaksauce12 Will write the guide as soon as I will get home buddy. In the mean time I wanted to ask something: 1. MY HDD is 500GB, (iam planing to buy one more soon). Then most of the guides here suggest to have only 1 partition. So what does that emply? That I have to have only one paritition? what is the benefit of that? Does the system really needs so much space? Does that mean I have to keep my music and movies on the same drive as system, organized in thouse movies, music, photos folders? What if something goes wrong and I loose all that (cuz I think time machine need external HDD, which I currently dont have). 2. I still leave WinXP on a lonely small partition cuz I like to play some games once in a while. MY movies and media are all stored on NTFS partitions which Leo can see (copy/run) BUT CANNOT MODIFY OR DELETE. But windows on the other hand cannot see the mac partition at all, so If I keep all the files on Mac partition I wont be able to see or run any of them. Is there any way out of this? peebo
Right, so I did the movevideodrivers thing and said to backup only the Nvidea stuff. That's right yes? Then I got a black screen still. So I changed to a VGA cable. I can get full res at 1920 etc. No weird graphic quirks (dashboard seems a bit weird when opening but if I open it back up straight away it's smooth) I did an XBench and got 156.17 I'm on a Q6600, 2 gig of ram, 500gb HD, 8400GS. Does that seem right? Sound works okay. Since I've installed a few bits and seemed to have removed somethings, is there anything I should check for and remove? Also, is there a big difference between DVI and VGA? I watch a lot of 1080 films and worried I might be losing quality. Also, am I okay to sync with my .Me? I'm not sure what updates I can do in software update.
weaksauce12
Tivo Kit: (Series 2 or newer) Download here: http://rapidshare.com/files/143365676/Tivo_Kit.zip.html Includes TiVoDecode Manager and the TiVo NowPlaying widget. You'll need your TiVo IP and MAK (grab the IP off your router or TiVo under Network Settings and get the Media Access Key from the TiVo website under Manage My Account) for both. Also make sure "Enable Transfers" is turned on for your TiVo (I believe this is set as default, at least on Series 2 boxes). This kit lets you do two things: (1) quickly view a list of Recorded Shows on your TiVo via Dashboard and (2) download and optionally encode Recorded Shows to your Mac. You can automatically encode the files to MPEG-2, or if you want iPod/Quicktime compatible you can go with MPEG-4. This way you can play back files on your AppleTV, XBMC, Plex, Front Row, Windows Media Center, iPhone, iPod Touch, Playstation 3, etc. You may need to get an additional transcoder like Handbrake or VisualHub if your player doesn't support MPEG-2 or MPEG-4. Also, if you play back the file in VLC after encoding to MPEG-2, make sure you set the video to Deinterlace (the Blend option works fine) and set the Aspect Ratio to 4:3 (at least for SD recordings). If you need more power, check out Roxio's Toast for Mac. It's $80, but it lets you easily que up and encode TiVo Recordings, as well as lets you edit out commercials, credits, etc. Weaksauce12Will write the guide as soon as I will get home buddy. In the mean time I wanted to ask something: 1. MY HDD is 500GB, (iam planing to buy one more soon). Then most of the guides here suggest to have only 1 partition. So what does that emply? But windows on the other hand cannot see the mac partition at all, so If I keep all the files on Mac partition I wont be able to see or run any of them. Is there any way out of this? Great thanks! You do not have to stick to 1 partition. However, it doesn't make much sense to partition a single drive unless you are dual-booting. However again, dual-booting is best with 2 separate drives - just hit the BIOS key to choose which drive to boot to, no hassle, no headache. You can put your music/movies/photos/whatever on a seperate drive if you want to, no problem. But there's not really any point to doing partitions unless you're dual-booting off the same hard drive. And yes, I'd definitely recommend a Time Machine drive. In fact, I use a 300gb boot drive and a 500gb backup drive, which holds both my automatic hourly Time Machine backups and nightly SuperDuper clone backups side-by-side. Also, hard drives are cheap now, so you may just want to get a separate drive for Windows - a 160gb 7200rpm drive on Newegg costs about $42, which is great for gaming and whatnot (costs the same as a 40gb or 80gb, so you might as well get the 160gb for $2 more!). Leopard is not Windows, therefore it cannot work properly with NTFS-formatted drives. However, you can fix this with 3rd-party software. MacFuse/NTFS-3G is a free way to read/write to NTFS drives; Paragon NTFS is a pay-for version. I use Paragon and it is VERY good. On the Windows side of things, you can buy MacDrive and it will let you read Mac-formatted hard drives. Right, so I did the movevideodrivers thing and said to backup only the Nvidea stuff. I'm not sure what updates I can do in software update. Yeah your Xbench score is fine. DVI is sharper than VGA, but it's mainly improved for text. I think it may give additional brightness/color but I'm not sure about that, the only thing I've personally noticed is sharper text. Yup, fine to sync with .Me. You can run ALL updates as of today. However, if you see 10.5.5 in there, check back in the original post of this thread to see if it works natively or not
peebo
I'm actually at 10.5.2 now. Worried doing the 10.5.3 update and the 10.5.4 might mess things up as I don't know exactly what it was that got rid of the black screen. I'll live with VGA for now. Am I okay to try the .3 and .4 updates you mentioned AFTER installing the ethernet, audio and graphics?
sup3r1or
YEs I do use the dual-boot so far, the only reason why I cant detele windows is a couple of gaming titles that are coming soon:) And of course I have 300 GB of stored data, I cant just format the whole drive at the moment:( othewise I loose all my photos and movies. I will be getting another 500GB next week. OKay here it goes: First of all a big thanks to Aqua-Mac for this. He is the man:) For the full guide go HERE! HOW TO MAKE GEFORCE 9800GTX RUNNING WITHOUGHT NVject or other drivers! (not tested with other cards by me, but I think might help) 1.First download the GFX files from here, these are the strings: Files for 256 mb cards: HERE Files for 512 mb cards: HERE 2. Unzip and copy 2 files ( gfxutil and template.plist ) on your desktop. 3. Open terminal and type following comands: cd ~/desktop (then press enter) ./gfxutil -f display (then press enter) You will see some information displayed. Locate line that looks something like this: PciRoot(0x1)/Pci(0xe,0x0)/Pci(0x0,0x0) this is PCI adress for you card. Copy it starting from the word Pciroot till the end. DO NOT CLOSE THE TERMINAL UNTIL YOU FINISHED WITH THE WHOLE TUTORIAL. 4. Open template.plist with textedit: in the file look for the simmilar code it should be close to the top. Delete it and replace it with what you have copied from terminal. Scroll down to the bottom to find following part <key>model</key> <string>NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX</string> you can change this for your card, as well as rom-revision if needed and you can set your VRAM size as well. NOTE: Ram size of your GPU is already set to 512 and 256 in the right files. So dont mess this up! It have to be specified with the code! not with numbers (eg 512). WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED SAVE THE FILE AS in.plist (make sure that this is the name for the file) save on your desktop. 5. Go back to the terminal (you should still be in desktop directory) and type: ./gfxutil -i xml -o hex ./in.plist ./out.hex this will generate out.hex file on your desktop. 6. Open out.hex with editor you will see a huge mess of numbers:) copy this whole code! Now open com.apple.boot.plist with editor from the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, find the last string which would probably be <key>Kernel Flags</key> <string>Yes</string> or timeout 4 seconds (like mine if you use DUAL BOOT from the same HDD with Vista Bootloader). After that string write following: <key>device-properties</key> <string>PASTE YOUR LONG HEX STRING HERE that you copied from out.hex</string> 7. Save this file, NOTE: IT will probably wont let you save it! So save it as com.apple.plist on the desktop, then take the new file and replace the original one (make sure you back up just in case) enter your password and you are done. Restart and it should be up and running with full support. NOTE: IF you want to change the resolution of the bootscreen then add: <key>Graphics Mode</key> <string>1680x1050x32</string>, after your long string. Hope it helps, thanks aqua-mac and Zephyroth. swilso
Hi all, can someone please inform me the compatability of a 8600 GT (512mb model). I can't find much on this video card. I have read a few issues with XFX 8600gt 512mb cards in 10.5.4, have these been ironed out so it can work properly (QE/CI)? I can choose from either of these brands MSI/ECS/Gigabyte/ASUS, all are the 512mb model. I don't want to spend the money for a 8800GT, so i am after something cheaper. Otherwise does anyone have suggestions of a video card of a similar price range as the 8600GT or lower? I want it to work properly in 10.5.4. thanks. I plan to build my p35-ds3l 'hackintosh' fairly soon.
weaksauce12
Neat iTunes Visualizer: http://rs346.rapidshare.com/files/96203368...here.bundle.zip Rumor has it this visualizer was bought out by Apple and will be included in the upcoming iTunes 8.0 release tomorrow. Either way, it's a pretty cool visualizer if you enjoy music. To install, copy the bundle file to Library>iTunes>iTunes Plug-ins and restart iTunes; Magnetosphere will now be a Visualizer option in the View menu. steveoa3d
I have the Zodac 7300GT and it works just fine, renders really well but is not fast for games as you know. Was very trouble free for my hack... Now I'm installing Vista 64 bit on a spare drive for the few times I want to play a PC game and the card installs fine but doesn't seem to want to display video in Vista after a reboot ? Just get a black screen but I can here the sounds of Vista booting and logging in music ? I can get video if I boot to safe mode however ? Not sure if some Hackintosh BIOS settings are messing it up or what ? I just bought a 8800GTS used so I will see if I have better luck with that.... I'm fairly indecisive about video cards. Have heard the MSI 8600GT (512mb) works fine in 10.5.4 with nvinstaller.v52, I didn't know if there were many problems still with 512mb cards as weaksauce initially said in the tutorial post - that is what has made me consider other options. In regards to your vista/video card support - that doesn't have anything to do with directX 10 support does it ? I was under the impression vista installs directX 10 by default and I know some cards have issues with directX 10 support ? A suggestion anyway, I have always had intergrated graphics (from owning laptops all my life) so I am fairly noob on the subject.

DTPHawk
Just finished my first OSX86 build and everything went very smooth, but i do have a few issues. My video card (EVGA 7200GS 256MB PCIe seen ) doesn't seem to be functioning as it should. Anytime i playback a VLC video or Quicktime video the playback is choppy. This actually goes for any kind of video or anthing that is graphicly intensive. Also, for the life of me i can't get the dual output to work. The VGA out works great but i get nothing on the DVI out port (which is currently using a VGA adapter to connect the 2nd monitor). On boot i get a mirrored image on both monitors all the way up to the grey apple logo screen, with the spinning wheel, but then as soon as i hit the desktop the monitor loses signal. I followed the guide and originally used the NVinstaller v.52. When that didn't work i downloaded the 10.5.5 9f9 driver and EFIStudio. When that didn't work i tried installing NVkusk. Now don't get me wrong i've never lost QE/CI and everything still works at this moment, but the choppy playback and dual monitor issues are really bothering me. Another very small issue is when i'm listening to itunes or have any audio playing back and a system notification sound happens, it garbles the audio and outputs almost a static noise. Any suggestions? From what i've been reading the dual monitor problem might have something to do with NVCAP or some editing that needs to be done. Other than these small issues everything else has been working perfect. I'm so glad i decided on this board for my new build. EDIT: After closer inspection of the choppy video playback the actual picture looks very smooth, but the audio seems to be what is cutting in and out. Possibly linked to the system sound issue. Just food for thought. Also I seem to be having the slow clock issue. Possible kernel issue?
sup3r1or
Did you switch mic/line input to the front of the case in software? Weaksauce12, Not sure, where is that by the way? You mean software? Well in skype there are only 2 choices (SAME AS IN SYSTEM PREFERENCES where mic doesnt show any signs of activity). Either Build-in Microphone or Line in, none of thouse are working.
